EPISODE 338 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Dark Knight Returns style! We go over the 2020(ish) mini series The Last Ronin. This takes place in a bleak future version of our world, where only one turtle is still alive, and he is fighting to avenge his fallen brothers and father.  It was a hit story and mostly very well received by fans! There is a very clear influence from Frank Miller's mid-1980s Batman story The Dark Knight Returns, but it's still very much a TMNT story, albeit one in the "mature, violent" category. Kevin Eastman collaborated on this, using an outline he and Peter Laird had done in 1987 as a starting point. Along with writer Tom Waltz and a cadre of brilliant arists (Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop as well as Kevin Eastman), they craft a dark post-apocalyptic (not technically, but it feels like a fallen world) landscape. We visit most of the main cast of Turtles lore (in the comics) one way or the other.  Despite all the harshness and sad turns, it's very fun! In Loose Screws, we talk about Batman: Dark Patterns, which Kevin loves (and Will has not read).

EPISODE 336 - We are at issue 11 of the original run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comics. April and the gang are recovering in a New England farm. April writes in a diary, and we see through her eyes how each of the other characters recovers from the crushing defeat they had at the hands of Shredder last issue. It's a contemplative, emotional and dare we say it --- extremely patient and grown-up issue! The comic that started at least partly as a laugh and a lark has matured into a full world with feelings and integrity! We love this issue! In a way, this is the end of the first era of these comics. From this point on, it's rare that both creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird would be involved at the same time making the comics. There are some exceptions (We will cover the trilogy they did the next year in our next episode). But this is the end of their initial run. In the early days of TMNT comics, the creators published four separate one-issue "micro-series" for each of the four turtles. Basically one-shot stories for each one. We reviewed the Raphael one-shot a bit earlier in this season. This episode we take a look at the stories for Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo. In general we liked these just a bit more than the "regular" issues the creators were doing at the same time. These one-shots are simple and uncluttered and really fun. But that's just the beginning of the problems that Dr. Phil has faced since trying to become the new voice of conservative politics, as his latest business venture is also facing hard times after only existing for a few months. Cheryl Hines, mediocre actress and current wife of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., went on The View this week where she was finally asked to explain the brain worm that her husband brought up - unprovoked - on the campaign trail last year. Hines insisted that the worm only "ate a little bit" of her husband's brain before dying, making the statement as if it were the most natural thing in the world to admit.Thousands of text messages have been obtained by Politico showing the disgusting group chats happening between leaders of Young Republican groups across the country. The messages are filled with racist comments and slurs, adoration for Adolph Hitler, and even fantasies about assault and murder and torture. These young people are clearly deeply disturbed and need mental health services immediately, but they instead found a home in today's Republican Party and they were shaping up to be the next generation of leaders of the GOP. Time Magazine ran a litany of articles in their latest issue this week praising Donald Trump for things he probably shouldn't even be getting credit for. But in spite of the praise, he still took issue with the magazine and had a meltdown over the cover photo that they used. Trump whined on social media that it made it look like his hair had "disappeared" and how much he never liked photos from that angle. That’s what he thought he was doing back in March at a Walmart in Acworth—helping a woman he assumed was disabled, struggling to manage two kids in a motorized cart. Instead, he was accused of trying to kidnap her child. What followed was a nightmare: Patel was arrested, denied bond, and spent 46 days in jail. He lost 17 pounds, endured threats from inmates, and was denied his medication. All for what? A misunderstanding. Surveillance footage later cleared his name, showing Patel calmly shopping, finding Tylenol, and leaving the store. Now, he’s suing Acworth for $25 million. STORY 2: Atlanta tenor Timothy Miller launches St. Catherine’s community concert series on Oct. 19 Mark your calendars: local tenor Timothy Miller will take the stage at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. as part of The Friends of Music concert series. Lusk, 29, of Marietta, allegedly called in a fake bomb threat to Johnnie MacCracken’s Celtic Firehouse Pub late on Sept. 26—because, according to police, he was drunk and angry. Not exactly a great combo. The arrest warrant also claims Lusk grabbed a woman by the arm during the incident, leaving her in pain. He was arrested three days later and charged with simple battery, false public alarm, and filing a false crime report. Lusk spent a few hours in the Cobb County jail before being released on Sept. 30 on a $10,000 bond. STORY 5: Home Depot hosts Kidde’s Cause for Alarm Home Safety Event On Oct. 4, Kidde teamed up with The Home Depot and iHeartMedia to host a lively fire safety event at The Home Depot on Roswell Road in Marietta. Part of Kidde’s Cause For Alarm campaign, the day was all about raising awareness for fire and carbon monoxide safety—and making homes safer, one alarm at a time. The event kicked off with a Donation Drive-Thru “parade,” complete with fire trucks, gear, and local firefighters from Sandy Springs. Families enjoyed music, food, giveaways, and even met Homer, The Home Depot mascot. The goal? Donate up to $1 million in alarms. Break: 3 / 4 STORY 6: Liberty joins the lineup: Cobb County’s newest K-9 embarks on duty Meet Liberty, the newest (and furriest) member of the Cobb County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit.
