Most people believe they are good at critical thinking. But until you become aware of metacognition, thinking about how you think, your problem-solving will be restricted by the thought patterns you were raised with. Most of us are vaguely aware of the concept of better thinking - phrases like thinking outside the box - but we don't have a label for it. One such framework is Lateral Thinking. #16 Eustress vs. Distress: Making Stress Work for You

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2019 39:51

In this episode of the podcast, we discuss the two types of stress: eustress and distress. Many people make the mistake of combining them together under the umbrella term 'stress' and confuse them as being the same thing. In fact, there is actually a good kind of stress, a positive stress. That's eustress. Since there is so much stigma in our culture around being 'stressed' and the health risks of being 'stressed' (meaning 'distressed') , we begin to back away from a situation at the first sign of stress, even if it's eustress. And this fear, this backing away from 'stressful' situations, prevents us from undergoing beneficial eustress and reaching a higher level. What this means is that, counter-intuitive as it may seem, undergoing voluntary periods of self-imposed eustress such as a fitness camp or a workshop can be tremendously useful for our personal growth. Similarly, making a conscious effort to step perceiving things as distress and perceiving them as eustress, and in within our power, can remove many of the negative effects that distress causes. Topics discussed include: eustress and distress, eustress vs distress, eustress definition, eustress meaning, what is eustress, and positive stress. #15 Why People Don't Want You To Succeed: Tall Poppy Syndrome

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2019 36:15

In this podcast John Sader, Michael Peroumal, and Garry Pesochinsky talk about an Australian cultural phenomenon known as tall poppy syndrome. People who stand out for having obtained success can be attacked and criticized by those who perceive this success as an affront; this is Tall Poppy syndrome in action. Tall Poppy Syndrome is the result of individuals trying to avoid introspection and responsibility; rather than confront their own limitations and seek to improve themselves, they'd prefer to keep everyone else chained down to their level. Or, sometimes Tall Poppy Syndrome can be a misguided attempt at protection - preventing someone from getting hurt by stepping outside of their comfort zone, even though it's a necessary step. For international listeners, this phenonemon is known in other parts of the world as the 'crab mentality' or 'the nail that sticks out get hammered.' Topics discussed include: tall poppy syndrome definition, tall poppy syndrome examples, personal responsibility, introspection, underdogs, outgrowing your peers, and more. #14 To Fear Failure is to Fear Progress

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2019 33:43

In Episode #14 of the Infinity Effect podcast, John Sader and Garry Pesochinsky discuss an issue that's present in every facet of life from business to parenthood: admitting when you made a mistake. The school system indoctrinates us to perceive mistakes as a bad thing, which has resulted in a widespread stigma against mistakes and the people who make them. In our culture, to make a mistake is to invite ridicule and ostracization. John and Garry challenge this belief system: you are not your mistakes, and mistakes are a vital step in how we learn. To fear mistakes is to fear progress, and that type of thinking is holding us back. Topics discussed include: people making mistakes, admitting mistakes, how to get over making a mistake, making mistakes at work, and how to learn from mistakes. #13 BE IT TIL YOU SEE IT: A Better Version of 'Fake It Til You Make It

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2019 42:36

Michael Peroumal and John Sader share their thoughts on the proverb "Fake It 'Til You Make It" and discuss several different interpretations of the meaning behind faking it until you make it. While the the concept can be beneficial and productive (as research into body language and posture has demonstrated) there are dangers in interpretating the phrase as supporting inauthenticity. As such, Michael and John also discuss alternative phrasings that capture the spirit of the idea in a way that is less subject to misinterpretation. Ultimately, the sentiment behind the phrase is to identify the person that you want to be, and emulating the behaviours that will lead to that outcome - not 'faking' being that person, but 'becoming' that person instead. At any given moment, our environment is filled with thousands of variables that modify our behaviour, whether we want them to or not. It's part of how we learn - as children, we absorb the information that our environment provides and that is what forms our worldview. But when we're adults, it's our individual responsibility to make our own decisions and stop being a product of our environment. It's our mandate to break the cycle that an environment enforces if it's stopping us from becoming who we want to be.
