We continue to use the historical model of Spiral Dynamics to illustrate how worldviews and their evolution related to the interpretation of God identity. The first 2 worldviews illustrated by the Spiral model are Archaic and Tribal. These 2 worldviews show up in the Biblical Narrative as Archaic Adam and Tribal Abraham. Both are in the Genesis of the story. These 2 figures set the stage for the evolution of spiritual consciousness with regard to universal God identity. Understanding how Adam and Abraham understood God identity is a necessary first step in the journey. We are proposing that the Biblical Narrative is actually one seamless story that traces the beginnings of spiritual consciousness all the way to our present day map. Spiritual consciousness with regard to God identity did not start with Jesus. To understand how we have a current map of separation, division and denomination in the world religion of Christianity we have to start at the beginning and then see if we can find where the interpretation of the story got off track along the way.
This episode documents a deep philosophical conversation between Doug Scott and Carys Vaughan, exploring complex spiritual and metaphysical concepts. The dialogue weaves together themes of consciousness evolution, spiritual development, societal polarization, and personal responsibility in a time of global transformation. Major Themes 1. The Womb/Tomb Metaphor and Transformational Consciousness A central metaphor emerges of our current global moment as a "tomb that is a womb" - a space of both death and rebirth. Doug introduces this concept through the Christian archetype of resurrection: "What is a neglected part of that archetype often is the tomb... You have the dying on the cross, and then the resurrection. But in between you have in the archetypal story 3 days in the tomb. And what is the tomb? If it's not a womb... the tomb is a womb." This frames their understanding of current global challenges as a necessary death-rebirth process: "How to midwife the death of the old and the birth of the new." Carys relates to this idea, noting how she had previously conceptualized it as liminal space: "I was kind of seeing it as a bit like we're just in this kind of liminal space... But there's this kind of liminal space that we're in at the moment where we we can't see the new yet." 2. The Law of One Philosophy and Cosmic Evolution Doug presents a detailed cosmology based on the "Law of One" material, explaining consciousness evolution through "densities" and the cosmic journey of the Creator experiencing itself: "The primal Logos, the Creator, is a being, a protean being, protean meaning changing. Growing is a protein being that develops and learns on... the ultimate macro scale." This framework provides context for understanding human development, societal challenges, and spiritual evolution. Doug explains how consciousness evolves through various "densities" with Earth currently in "3rd density" - a particularly challenging stage characterized by veiled awareness and polarization. 3. Navigating Polarization and Division Both speakers explore the challenge of dealing with societal division and polarization. Carys expresses difficulty empathizing with those who deliberately cause harm: "What I find difficult is how the rich and powerful, like Trump or Elon Musk, are cutting into things that help relieve the pain and suffering of the marginalized, without any empathy or even curiosity of what most people's lives are like. They are purposefully choosing. This is the evil that I that I see." Doug offers a perspective that reframes even negative polarization as part of cosmic development: "From the law of one perspective, those who have chosen the negative polarity from 3rd density we call that evil. But in the metaphysics of it all it's not. There isn't an evil or a good. They're just 2 pathways that create catalyst for each polarity." 4. Personal Agency and Response to Global Challenges The conversation explores how individuals should respond to global disruption and conflict. They discuss the importance of "witnessing" (or as Doug suggests, "withness") rather than fighting against what is happening: "Our job, I think, is to midwife the new spirit of standing under... to help those who are entrapped in their own belief systems, not hating on them." Doug emphasizes detachment from outcomes while staying engaged in service: "So work hard, be an activist, do the things. Every act of love counts; yes, butterfly effect. But then strip the ego's need to clothe itself in success or failure, and walk off the field when the harvest is done." 5. Spiral Dynamics and Levels of Consciousness The speakers discuss different levels of consciousness development, referencing "blue level," "green meme," and other terms from Spiral Dynamics. They explore how people at different levels perceive reality: "They can't see. But look beyond that, say blue, level consciousness. So anything that they see that perhaps, is, you know, green or yellow, or whatever is, is seen as a threat." This framework helps them understand why some people may be resistant to change or threatened by different perspectives. 6. The Ripple Effect of Personal Actions The conversation concludes with a beautiful recognition of how small actions create meaningful ripples. Doug shares how Carys's environmental activism has inspired him across continents: "Your act of love towards God as the creation has made an influence to some dude way in Texas." Carys appreciates this while acknowledging the beauty in not knowing the full impact of our actions: "There's something beautiful in the not knowing as well. I think you know just you're scattering your seeds, and you don't quite know where they're going to blow off to what they're going to kind of produce." Conclusion This rich dialogue explores profound questions about humanity's current evolutionary moment, framing global challenges as a necessary transition toward a new consciousness. It balances metaphysical concepts with practical approaches to navigating polarization and contributing positively to societal transformation. The speakers ultimately find common ground in the importance of committed action paired with non-attachment to outcomes - being present to suffering while maintaining hope in the possibility of rebirth.
We are using cartography to view the Christian landscape via a map. The map helps define the great diversity of churches and denominations. Our series explains why the result of 2,000 years of evolution led to such division. In this episode we use Spiral Dynamics to trace the history of the situation. The state of Christianity and the church must be understood from the beginning or Genesis of the God Identity story. So I show how everything preceding Jesus and the apostolic writers set the stage for an interpretation of Christology that led to a world religion. From here we will propose a new future for Christology, one that results in world-centric unity.
Spiral Dynamics 03 - Ein achtfach leuchtendes Evangelium
Faith in Transition: A Journey from Deconstruction to Reconstruction **Doug Scott, LCSW, holds dual master's degrees in Social Work and Pastoral Ministry from Boston College (2004). As a psychospiritual therapist with over two decades of experience, Doug brings a unique integration of psychological insight and spiritual depth to his work. His private counseling practice reflects an approach influenced by contemplative thinkers and progressive theologians including Richard Rohr OFM, Brian McClaren, Cynthia Bourgeault, and Ilia Delio OSF, while drawing inspiration from the mystical tradition of St. Francis of Assisi and the process philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. Mentioned in the talk by Doug is Dr. Matt Segall, PhD (https://footnotes2plato.com). Summary of Major Themes 1. Understanding Deconstruction and Reconstruction Doug Scott frames faith deconstruction as a necessary and "holy" process that many people are experiencing in response to the disconnect between their understanding of Christianity's core teachings (love, inclusion, vulnerability) and its current manifestations in American society (particularly Christian nationalism). He emphasizes that staying permanently in deconstruction can lead to existential anxiety and nihilism, and that reconstruction is the essential next step in the spiritual journey. The presenter uses the metaphor of "death, tomb, and resurrection" to illustrate this process: - Deconstruction = death of old beliefs - Tomb time = period of uncertainty and transformation - Reconstruction = resurrection into a new understanding Scott proposes that we need to "midwife the death of the old while midwifing the birth of something new," a concept he attributes to Mirabai Starr, a colleague of Richard Rohr. 2. Levels of Consciousness and Development A central framework of the talk is the developmental model of consciousness that Scott presents, which includes several stages: - **Pre-traditional Warrior Consciousness**: Focused on survival, tribal identity, power-based structures, magical thinking, and immediate gratification. - **Traditional Values Level**: Emphasizes order, hierarchy, absolute truths, moral certainty, conformity, and clear distinctions between right and wrong. Scott describes this as the "happy blues" (referencing Spiral Dynamics) because people at this level have certainty about their beliefs. - **Modernity**: Born from the scientific revolution and Enlightenment, this level rejects suffering for future rewards in favor of creating "heaven now" through technology and science. - **Postmodernity**: Emerges with a critique of all previous levels, recognizing that "truth" often comes at the cost of marginalizing others. This level emphasizes social justice but tends to deconstruct without offering reconstruction. - **Post-postmodernity/Integral/Metamodern**: Characterized by "include it all and thus transcend" rather than "transcend and exclude." This level integrates multiple ways of knowing, recognizes developmental stages, embraces paradox and complexity, and finds comfort in uncertainty. 3. Current Cultural Dynamics and "Conversions" Scott discusses the phenomenon of people who were formerly progressive suddenly embracing far-right ideologies or rigid religious structures. He attributes this to: - Existential anxiety generated by postmodern deconstruction without reconstruction - The appeal of certainty and community offered by traditional structures - The "hermeneutic of suspicion" taken to an extreme, where everything becomes suspect He argues that many current "conversions" are not based on authentic faith but are adopting a "mimetic Christianity" as a "social technology" that provides dopamine hits and community belonging without true spiritual transformation. 4. The Path Forward: Finding Common Ground Through Values The talk concludes with a practical exercise where participants identify core values they hope would be recognized at their funeral. Scott proposes that: - Our unacknowledged values form the lens through which we judge ourselves and others - Anger often stems from perceiving that others are violating these core values - By articulating our values and the behaviors that embody them, we can find common ground beneath the divisive surface - True spiritual leaders must be able to "hold tension" and become comfortable with uncertainty - The way forward involves connecting with others around fundamental shared values rather than political differences 5. Embodied Christianity vs. Power Structures Throughout the talk, Scott contrasts true Christianity (centered on love, vulnerability, and connection) with its distortions into power structures. He emphasizes: - The cross represents God's vulnerability, not power - Christianity should be about relationship and love, not control - The "sin" is furthering the ethos of separation rather than unity - We must be willing to engage with those we disagree with (referencing his own Catholic practice of saying "peace be with you" to those with whom he politically disagrees) 6. Hope for the Future Despite the current polarization, Scott expresses optimism about what lies beneath the "rigid crust" of modern discourse. He notes: - Younger generations often display unexpected wisdom and maturity - Beneath the rigid surface of polarized positions, many people experience doubts and questions - There is a growing capacity for connection if we can access it - Progress is happening despite appearances to the contrary The talk ultimately frames the current cultural moment as an opportunity for authentic spiritual growth if we can embrace vulnerability, articulate our core values, and connect with others at a deeper level beyond ideological divisions.

In the words of my esteemed co-host, Anne Remy, “There's a difference between an elder and a person who is older than you.” Judith Lewis Herman, MD, is wise––a psychiatrist, professor, researcher, author, and advocate who helped establish the diagnosis of PTSD back before many of us were born. In addition to her work with veterans and children, Judith fundamentally altered the discourse around women's traumatic experiences and pioneered subsequent treatments for victims of abuse. How's that for street-cred sagacity!? I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this is Anne Remy's final episode as co-host. Don't worry, it's all for good! You can find out more by tuning in. Oh, fellow therapists, how I love you! That said, I'm super-concerned about our capacity to move through interpersonal challenges exacerbated by, among other things, a volatile election season. My question is: How do we model being with folks outside the profession––even those we disagree with––if we can't make space for complexities of thought and motivation within our own community? Discomfort doesn't automatically denote danger. Identifying the difference and holding those nuances takes practice. Let this episode be part of the lesson plan. Deborah Ooten, PhD., is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center, and she's the first person to successfully merge the teachings of the Enneagram with the Spiral Dynamics evolutionary model. I'm a fan of both models; my co-host Anne Remy isn't. Friction can rub us the wrong way AND expand our capacity for complex conversations. As Anne says, it's possible to engage with concepts that you vehemently disagree with, express concerns, explore differences, and come out the other end while still having a reasonable opinion of one another. Todd and Cathy bring calm in the context of an upcoming election. They discussed the importance of self-compassion, its three components, and the concept of mindfulness, emphasizing that self-compassion is not about letting oneself off the hook, but rather about treating oneself with kindness and understanding.

In the world of personal growth, we often focus on eliminating what we consider "negative" parts of ourselves. We think if our ego shows up differently each day, something must be wrong. But development isn't linear, and we all host multiple ego states that serve unique purposes depending on our circumstances. This is especially clear through the lens of developmental psychology, particularly models like the Stages model and Spiral Dynamics. Both theories shed light on our evolving selves: Spiral Dynamics frames development within a collective and anthropological context, while the Stages model focuses on individual growth through different perspectives. If you're familiar with both, you probably understand the complexity of ego states we navigate daily. And while it may seem overwhelming to honor all these inner voices, recognizing their purpose allows us to ease internal conflict. Why We Should Embrace Multiple Ego StatesFrom childhood to adulthood, we develop different "voices" that align with our growth stages. These perspectives aren't inherently harmful—what causes discomfort is often our relationship with these internal voices. If you've ever felt like a younger part of you is “getting in the way” of your growth, you're not alone. It's tempting to elevate the more advanced, spiritual ego state and disregard the rest. But each stage, from the childlike first-person view to the more complex fourth-person understanding, plays a vital role in our psychological development.Take, for example, the early stages of our lives, where we operate in the first-person perspective. As toddlers, the world is ours for the taking. We're driven by pure instinct and need, and we don't yet recognize that others have desires separate from our own. As we move into the second-person perspective, friendships emerge, and with them, the desire to understand how others see us. This relational view is essential for developing empathy and social navigation, but it also introduces conformity, often at the cost of authenticity.By the time we reach the third and fourth-person perspectives, we're balancing individual desires with the larger societal framework, understanding that we're part of a collective. The ego state becomes even more complex as we develop ideals for how the world should be. It's at this point that the spiritual ego can begin to take root. The Rise of the Spiritual EgoAt advanced stages, the spiritual ego often emerges as the “enlightened” voice, tempting us to place it above all others. We may feel that because we've accessed deeper awareness, we've somehow transcended our earlier, more “primitive” ego states. But this belief is precisely where spiritual elitism sneaks in. We fall into the trap of believing that the spiritual ego is the “correct” or “higher” self while disregarding the importance of earlier ego states. The truth is, all of these voices—whether the toddler who craves attention, the second-person who seeks connection, or the third-person who strives for societal contribution—are valid and necessary parts of the human experience. The spiritual ego is simply another state in the continuum. It doesn't erase or replace the others.Healing Through Developmental CoachingOne of the biggest revelations in developmental psychology is the importance of integrating all stages of growth. Each perspective offers unique wisdom. The key is to avoid letting any one ego state dominate. This is where developmental coaching becomes so valuable—helping us bring awareness to the various parts of ourselves, understanding their roles, and ultimately, learning to balance them.In my personal coaching and development work, I've found that honoring these different stages requires a combination of empathy, awareness, and strategic action. Whether it's helping clients navigate early childhood trauma or releasing the hold of the spiritual ego, the process always involves balancing these voices rather than suppressing them.If we're to fully evolve, we must equalize the spiritual ego and embrace the complexity of our development. Just as you wouldn't silence a child who's learning to speak, you shouldn't disregard the earlier stages of your growth. Every part of you has something valuable to contribute to your life's journey. As you move forward in your own development, remember: that growth is not about elevating one part of you above the others. It's about weaving them all into a cohesive and dynamic self. When we learn to embrace and respect all parts of ourselves, we can experience true liberation.I'd love to hear your thoughts—have you noticed your spiritual ego showing up in unexpected ways? What developmental stages have you struggled to integrate? Feel free to share your experience!I want you to consider supporting this publication by becoming a premium member. Cindy Wigglesworth, trailblazer in the field of spiritual intelligence, has created an assessment tool that identifies our spiritual strengths and weaknesses—qualities that fall outside the traditional IQ or emotional intelligence (EQ) parameters—in order to provide a guide for determining which skills we as individuals need to develop in order to show up in the world as love in action. Early on, Cindy recognized the profound benefits that both spiritual practice and EQ assessments had in her leadership development work, wishing only there was a map similar to what EQ offers but going one step higher, to lead people in the realm of spiritual development. So she created a multidimensional self-assessment tool to do just that, wrote the book SQ21: The 21 Skills of Spiritual Intelligence, and founded the global leadership development network Deep Change. Cindy's dedication, brilliant intellect, integral understanding, and the effects of a lifetime of spiritual motivation and practice are abundantly evident in this warmly personal, articulate, and inspiring conversation about spirituality and how we can come to embody the values we aspire to. It's easy to love people in the abstract, Cindy points out, but how we actually behave is what's critical. What would love see? she asks, when talking about the practice of reframing. As co-host John Dupuy said, this conversation is like “an infusion of spiritual vitamins.” It's also very timely—Cindy reflects that spiritual intelligence skills and learning how to sustain faith are more important than ever in these times of polarization and crisis. Part II of my conversation with Trace Bell shall forever more be referred to as “The One Where We Dig Into Spiral Dynamics”. If you're new to SD, it helps to think of it as a modern language that expands our understanding of the stages of evolutionary development in individuals, organizations, or whole societies. Still confused? Don't be. SD is simply another tool that therapists can reference, easily coexisting alongside Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Erickson's stages of development, or any other preferred model. The context of this rare two-part conversation is Spiral Dynamics (SD), a model that gauges the evolutionary development of individuals, societies, cultures, and organizations. Shepherding us through the details of this model is Trace Bell, an integration guide and transformational coach. Part I of our chat delves into Trace's background and the childhood forces that shaped his adult perspective. It's an origins story that includes the poli-sci track at UCLA, megachurches, and an influential pastor father. Recently I've had some "random" thoughts that have led to some pretty incredible "chance" meetings and encounters. Are these just lucky meetings? Coincidences? Or is there something else going on? In today's episode I wonder about what happens when we actually pay attention. What are we just not noticing because we're stuck in the way we think things "should" be? I mention the books "Working With the Law" by Raymond Holliwell and "Spiral Dynamics in Action" by Beck, et.al. “All growing up stages are the product of scientific investigation of the stages of growing up that people go through. And those are all defined in third person terms because they're the person or thing being spoken about. When we talk about the archaic stage or the magic stage or the mythic stage, if you look within right now, you can't see any of those stages. As a matter of fact, before we had this conversation, you had no idea that you had all these six to eight stages of growing up that you will go through. You didn't know anything about those because you can't see them. They're not first person or even second person phenomena. They're third person, the person or thing being spoken about.” So says Ken Wilber, whose work and intellect is difficult to describe. Throughout a long career—and the authoring of 20 books, including A Brief History of Everything, Grace and Grit, Sex, Ecology, Spirituality, and The Religion of Tomorrow, Wilber has put together what is essentially a synthesis of every psychological model of development. In fact, he locked himself away for years, writing every model down on pieces of yellow legal paper, and then knit them all together. I've written about Wilber's work at length in my newsletter, which is also called Pulling the Thread—I'll put links in the show notes—and I talk about his work on this show as well. Most recently, I talked about Ken Wilber with Nicole Churchill in our conversation about Spiral Dynamics. Wilber is a Spiral Dynamics wizard, though he uses it in aggregate with the work of other developmental thinkers, integrating the work of luminaries like Carol Gilligan, Robert Kegan, and others. In today's conversation, we talk about Wilber's brand new book, Finding Radical Wholeness, which explores the five big processes we all undertake in our lives. In today's conversation, we mostly talked about two: Waking Up and Growing Up, which are often conflated. Wilber makes the case for why they are unrelated processes—and the essential nature of the latter. While Waking Up, or having a Satori experience is wonderful—and something that 60% of people report—we all need to grow up. Wilber and I spend most of today's conversation talking about our political environment from the standpoint of developmental psychology: Why we're so fractured, and what it will look like when the Integral Stage becomes the leading edge of culture and we learn how to include and transcend. I think this is fascinating, and reassuring, and excellent context for a moment that feels so out-of-control. Scaling Up Take away: Putting the right people systems and processes in place is critical for reducing the burden on the business owner, improving profitability, and allowing the business to run more smoothly and successfully. Implementing these structured people management practices is key to achieving sustainable growth. Money Learnings: Corwin's early childhood was marked by financial abundance - his father was very successful in agricultural sales and lived a lavish lifestyle with private planes, a car collection, and more. However, when his father's company was sold and he lost his job, the family then went through periods of extreme "famine or feast" as his father's subsequent business ventures failed. Corwin's mother worked full-time in low-paying jobs, but her income was not enough to provide financial stability for the family. This upbringing of oscillating between wealth and scarcity instilled in Corwin the perspective that money is hard to come by and that financial situations can drastically change, despite his father's entrepreneurial efforts. It taught him that money has an inherent insecurity and unpredictability to it. Bio: Corwin J. Smith is a Valuation Growth Coach, certified in Scaling Up/The Rockefeller Habits by Verne Harnish since 2016. He possesses expertise in diverse methodologies including Spiral Dynamics, 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive Team, and Metronomics. Currently, Corwin specializes in aiding companies across sectors like medicine, professional services, cannabis, and manufacturing, with a focused effort in recent years on blue-collar industries and trades. His clients typically achieve substantial results, including a 40% reduction in management time, doubling of net profit, and a 500-800% increase in business valuation. Corwin's entrepreneurial journey began at the WP Carey Business School, where he founded a Fire & Water Damage restoration company, rapidly growing it to 45 employees in less than four years. Prior to this venture, he made significant strides in medical sales for a local diagnostic imaging firm, setting records in new patient and doctor acquisition. His tenure at Rocky Mountain Restoration was marked by high praise and media coverage in the Arizona Republic and Success Magazine, reflecting the impactful culture and work of the organization. On a personal front, Corwin is deeply invested in his family life, alongside his wife, dedicating themselves to raising their four sons to be productive and fulfilled members of society. An avid outdoorsman, Smith relishes mountain biking, hiking, and hunting in the wilderness of Arizona. He is also a devoted supporter of his children's sporting activities. Further extending his commitment to the community, Corwin offers his expertise through unpaid mentorship to upcoming business owners in the local Entrepreneur's Organization chapter. Highlights from this episode: The importance of having a clear vision, mission, and values for your business that align with your life purpose and goals. Strategies for reducing the time required to manage the day-to-day operations of your business, such as implementing structured meeting rhythms and delegating tasks you don't enjoy. The value of proper hiring practices, including assessing candidates for cultural fit, skill set match, and motivational drivers using behavior assessments. Techniques for improving profitability, such as implementing a salary cap based on profit targets and addressing underperforming team members. The benefits of creating a comprehensive life plan that harmonizes your personal goals across relationships, health, spirituality, and business. The importance of decisiveness and taking action, rather than getting stuck in analysis paralysis when making tough business decisions. Spirals began appearing in the Boyne Valley. First, in a dream when I was rounding cobblestoned streets searching for a place I vaguely remembered. Then, indelibly, among the neolithic moons carved into the mother stones at Newgrange in County Meath, where an invisible hand was believed to gesture to the dead on the briefest day of the year. The fiddle ferns seemed eager to converse at Ballymaloe, their shoulders smiling atop their green, springtime spines; and a cream-colored nautilus curled perfectly in my palm on a windswept beach in Ardmore. An acupuncturist friend explained how Chi travels through the body's meridians in spiral patterns. Spirals began opening in the intervals between musical harmonies and along the wooden banister in my father's home. And then, in meditation — massive, breathing spirals emanated like forest vines behind my eyes.“The spiral is a spiritualized circle. In the spiral form, the circle, uncoiled, has ceased to be vicious; it has been set free,” said the Russian American author and poet Vladimir Nabokov.Vedic people sensed this spiritualized circle moving through all creation — and reflected in the physical shape of the galaxies — as the interweaving power of creation itself. The universe does not manifest randomly but is expressed through an intricate matrix they gave the nomenclature Ṛta, a Sanskrit word that means “that which is joined together, order, truth, or architecture.”Ṛta is closely allied to the injunctions and ordinances thought to uphold it, collectively referred to as dharma, and the action of the individual in relation to those ordinances, referred to as karma (two terms that eventually eclipsed Ṛta in framing a sense of moral and religious order). Josh Schrei and I recently spoke about Ṛta with respect to its etymological connection to the words harmony, rite, art, order, rhythm, and ritual. But some facts do not square tidily with our notions of sacred geometry. Words and actions can unfurl in conscious or unconscious directions. We get caught in tired eddies of protection, maelstroms of othering, devastating tornadoes of forgetting. The beauty, the horror. We find ourselves asking — what vastness can contain all this?Scholar William Mahony explains Ṛta, this concept that encapsulates the centripetal and centrifugal movement of time and evolution, of energy and light, as follows: “Vedic thought holds that a true vision of a divine universe must necessarily include the brokenness of the world and that, in fact, it is precisely the imagination that is able to see the way the whole fits together despite the often disjointed nature of the parts.”So an uncoiling, integrative comprehension of reality must stretch to encompass the world's brokenness, Mahony counsels.Joanna Macy, an elder in environmental activism and deep ecology, is the visionary teacher of the Work that Reconnects, a roadmap for staying present to painful truths — the brokenness — while opening to the joy that comes with a renewed commitment to acting on behalf of a more just and humane world. The Spiral of the Work that Reconnects progresses through four stages as follows:(1) Gratitude. First, we must touch the ground. Gratitude resources our nervous systems. It links us to a flow of empathy and the inspiration to engage in the present moment and the world around us.(2) Grief. Here, we stop trying to bypass suffering with protection and privilege. “This world, in which we are born and take our being, is alive. It is … our larger body” (Coming Back to Life, Macy & Brown). We feel our interconnectedness. With support, we allow for the movement of sorrow, the broken-heartedness through which we can access vulnerability and courage toward change.(3) Seeing with New Eyes. “When we reconnect with life, by willingly enduring our pain for it, the mind retrieves its natural clarity” (Coming Back to Life, Macy & Brown). Opening to knowledge that has been suppressed and making room for our natural emotional responses can evoke greater equilibrium and clarity of thought. No longer unconsciously driven by aversion or grasping, sobriety can emerge — and with it, a more accurate understanding.(4) Going Forth. Awareness and reconnection naturally inspire a desire to be the change. Our personal mandate to contribute can awaken as we re-sensitize ourselves to the web of life. This is a creative process. It's about paying attention to how we can participate in the emergence of healing.Ken Wilber famously spent three years inventorying every known system worldwide—biological, medical, political, cultural, religious, psychological, spiritual, and philosophical—and arranging them into an integral theory. Wilber thus popularized Spiral Dynamics, based on the emergent cyclical theory of adult human development by Professor Clare Graves. As Graves explained: “Briefly, what I am proposing is that the psychology of the mature human being is an unfolding, emergent, oscillating, spiraling process marked by progressive subordination of older, lower-order behavior systems to newer, higher-order systems as man's existential problems change. These systems alternate between focus upon the external world, and attempts to change it, and focus upon the inner world, and attempts to come to peace with it, with the means to each end changing in each alternatively prognostic system. Thus, man tends, normally, to change his psychology as the conditions of his existence change. Each successive state, or level of existence, is a state through which people pass on the way to other states of equilibrium. When a person is centralized in one state of existence, he has a total psychology which is particular to that state.”We don't always have the vantage point to know where we stand in the great turning. But uncertainty, even ominous apprehension of what could be around the next bend, can nevertheless be a starting point. There are days when the light seems to bend back and shine on everything. There are mornings after storms when perspective can return.I want to believe in nature's underlying architecture of good and our capacity for deep remembrance. I want to believe that we are held in a gorgeous persistence. When I touch your crown, soft hair whorls upward into my palm. Spirals name your fingertips. Surely, these, too, are glimpses of an ancient vision. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe

“Turquoise is looking for how do we bring back the village? How do we live in community again? Why are we living in these separate houses? We're not sharing resources. Everyone on the street has a snowblower, a lawnmower, you know, like the design isn't elegant, it's not an elegant design. And so I think the mind of yellow joins into turquoise and as it has studied systems, it contributes to that and we are looking for more holistic, elegant solutions to give birth to a new culture. It's like we can no longer continue down the path. And at turquoise, we are going to have to sacrifice for the whole.” For those of you who follow me on Instagram or read my newsletter on Substack, you'll know that I've been quite obsessed with Spiral Dynamics of late, and see it as one way to explain our current cultural and political dilemmas, along with so much of our internalized anxiety. It was first developed by the late professor Clare Graves, who was a contemporary and colleague of Abraham Maslow, and then advanced by professor Don Beck, who worked on post-Apartheid South Africa with Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk, and then further pushed by integral philosopher Ken Wilber. Spiral Dynamics can be heady stuff, and so I was thrilled when Nicole Churchill, a wonderfully grounded therapist and expert in Spiral Dynamics, offered to talk through the system with me for the podcast. Nicole and her husband John Churchill, who has also been a guest on Pulling the Thread, studied with Ken Wilber, and both apply it in their therapy work with both individuals and organizations. If you all end up loving Spiral Dynamics as much as I do, Nicole has offered to come back and explore how she uses it in therapy—please pass this episode on to any friends who you think might enjoy. I'm convinced that there are some keys here that can help us see the world and ourselves more clearly. In the show notes, you'll find ways to go deeper as well. There are 3 different tiers of awareness that I feel we should all be aware of. The concept of emergence is defined as "the process of becoming visible after being concealed." Hopefully this new way of looking at the mindset carried in each tier helps us catch ourselves when we're playing small and at a lower level than we're capable of.If this interests you, check out other ideas like Spiral Dynamics, the Graves Model, and emergence!Original video: https://youtu.be/5o7HFm6pJ2s?si=9hp-5QK_SV1fYpOK****Connect and Support Geek Psychology #geekpsychology ****FREE 8 Hero Personality Assessment: https://geekpsychology.com/ Support the show

In this episode of "Struggling to be Joy Fueled and Jesus Led," Toni asks Matt why some people resist thanking others who have given to them. And why some may feel manipulated when they get a thank you. What goes on in someone that would make them resist sending (or receiving) a thank-you card, or a gratitude text, etc. Matt turns to the human development model of Spiral Dynamics to make sense of our differing attitudes around reciprocity. This is the first of a few podcasts on this topic.

We speak with Doug King about the evolution of his faith, progressing from Christian fundamentalism to a post-Christian identity. At the heart of Doug's understanding of this journey is the historical framework of Spiral Dynamics, a model that illuminates the evolution of worldviews across cultures worldwide. This model reveals that the journey many of us have been on - from fundamentalism, through deconstruction, to a more expansive, inclusive spirituality - are not isolated personal experiences, but an integral part of the collective evolution of the human race. After the interview Tim and Nick share their own experience of Spiral Dynamics, and how it's helped them make sense of their own journeys. I'm back with fan-fav Aaron Daughty to dive into a topic that's been HUGE in both of our spiritual journeys since we last spoke– emotional healing. You have probably heard phrases like “feel your feelings” but how do we actually do that? What does it look like in practice? Well, that's exactly what we break down in today's episode. Aaron shares his own spiritual journey moving from Law of Attraction to emotional healing, realizing the true path to the higher vibration emotions is to delve into the lower vibrational ones. We both open up to discuss the ways our denser emotions have shown up in our lives and how they're linked to unprocessed childhood experiences. We then dive into the Spiral Dynamics and how we can hold onto emotions at different stages of our development… including a very cathartic practice I did to release suppressed anger towards the masculine. Aaron shares his experience of attracting controlling women until healing his wounds from his stepmom. This is an honest conversation between two spiritual teachers being REAL with you on what true healing looks like behind the scenes and I know you're going to take away so much from it.
