So, the name Joel means that Yahweh is God. This is a great name, but how is this true when you consider this prophet and his message being quite depressing in the first few chapters. Where is the hope, and why is it good that Yahweh is God?

I think that if we are honest as Christians we have a Hollywood picture of heaven. We think that we sit on a cloud playing the harp and maybe eating grapes wondering what to do next. Heaven appears to be a rather boring retirement. So, we do not want to go, and besides it seems […] The post Longing for Zion (Joel 3:17-21) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
The prophet Joel is calling the nations to make war against the Lord. Why does the Lord invite such a thing? After this invitation to war, Joel makes clear that the Lord is going to be the champion because the Lord is strong and mighty. If this is all true, then why would we want […] The post Who Has a Fighting Chance? (Joel 3:9-16) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
Have you ever been cut off in traffic and wondered how someone can get away with such an offense? Have you ever wished that a police officer would have witnessed the person who aggressively cut you off so you can have the satisfaction of knowing that the person got a ticket? We saw in our series on 1 Thessalonians that Paul is encouraging the church to look forward to the day of the Lord. However, the prophet Joel, who makes the Day of the Lord a major topic in his prophecy, does not seem to present this day as something joyful. In our study the day […] The post The Last Exodus (Joel 2:28-32) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
The prophet Joel has not been a man that has been full of hope, encouragement, or much joy to say the least. So, if this prophet is one of doom and gloom how can we glean things from His work? In our sermon series have made implications to the work of Christ, but how do […] The post "You Shall Know My Name is the Lord." (Joel 2:18-27) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
We have mentioned before that sometimes people make the claim that the God of the Old Testament is mean, vindictive, and angry. However, the God of the New Testament is compassionate, gracious, and very nice. If you look at parts of Joel’s prophecy you can see that, and we have seen how Christ passes through […] The post The Dreaded Day Delayed? (Joel 2:12-17) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
Our series in Thessalonians made the Day of the Lord sound like something great. Paul exhorted the church to live in light of the day of the Lord being confident that it would be a reunion, and she should live today in confidence of the day. If this is true then it seems that the […] The post Who Can Endure the Day of the Lord? (Joel 2:1-11) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
The Lord has promised that the champion line will come from the line Judah. In order for this to happen Judah has to remain a tribe in history. So, if this is true then how can the prophet Joel have such a negative message against the tribe of Judah? How can the promised land be […] The post Possibly Escaping God’s Judgment (Joel 1:13-20) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
The name Joel means Yahweh is God. This is something that is very encouraging to hear, but when we open his prophecy it is not something that is encouraging. Why would we want to read this prophet? Why would we want to know of the locusts coming against the land? How is this helpful for […] The post Judah's Plague (Joel 1:1-12) appeared first on Covenant United Reformed Church.
