SOLO | The Two Types of Fear

Build Your Network

In this solo episode, Travis digs into old notes from his phone to unpack why humans are wired for fear—evolutionary survival that now fuels anxiety and stalled dreams. He shares his "rocking chair test" for big risks (like a six-figure filming project with legends) and how fearing regret beats fearing failure every time. On this episode we talk about:   Human evolution: 99% of our 100,000-year history as hunter-gatherers made fear our survival edge—now it creates worry over non-threats like embarrassment or loss.   Reptilian brain vs. subconscious supercomputer: You can't override it, but awareness lets you redirect fear (e.g., fear of mediocrity > fear of failing once).   Jocko Willink wisdom: "Every failure that does not lead to death is psychological"—nothing to lose by swinging again.   Travis's risk framework: Worst-case (lose money)? Renewable. Best-case? Dream life. Time isn't—don't wait for the "perfect" moment.   Rocking chair test: At 98, will you regret not acting more than failing? Past risks always led to growth, win or lose. Top 3 Takeaways 1.  Fear is inevitable—choose the right one: Fear living subpar > fear one failure; money renews, time doesn't.2.  Worst-case scenarios rarely kill you; engage fear directly to shrink it, then act—upside crushes downside.3.  Build proof through risks: One success unlocks confidence; even "failures" spark hyper-growth and problem-solving. Notable Quotes   "Worry is simply faith that something bad is going to happen... Hope is faith that something good is going to happen."   "Everybody gives in to fear. Whether it's the fear of failing at making your dreams come true or the fear of never making your dreams come true, the one you give into will determine how you live your life."   "I fear that state of regret so much more than I fear risking embarrassment now." ✖️✖️✖️✖️

Lauderdale with a high-energy pre-party hosted by Topless Travel before everyone sets sail for a week at sea with thousands of lifestyle couples. Day 1's theme? Pirates. But before the real fun could begin, Mother Nature had other plans. Unseasonably rough seas, cold weather, and a rocking ship had plenty of cruisers battling seasickness as the voyage got off to a chaotic start.Despite the rocky conditions, Dan and Lacy still managed to make their way to the playroom and keep the party going. Along the way, they share the behind-the-scenes moments from the first night onboard — including how the cold weather, rough seas, and even a surprisingly heated disagreement about hair care nearly derailed the trip before it really got started.Whether you've been on a lifestyle cruise before or are curious what the first day at sea is really like, this episode is packed with funny moments, honest reflections, and a behind-the-scenes look at how this wild adventure began. Rocking Your Body for Summer No Matter Your Size or Age: Rest, Hormones, Confidence.  When it comes to women's health, hormone balance, menopause, perimenopause, metabolism support, body confidence, and midlife energy all start with one powerful truth: you cannot outperform exhaustion and hormone imbalance. If you're struggling with fatigue, weight gain, belly fat, mood swings, low motivation, poor sleep, or feeling invisible in midlife, this episode teaches why rest, sleep repair, nervous system regulation, and intelligent hormone support are foundational for fat loss, muscle tone, and sustainable vitality. You don't need to be younger or smaller to rock your body this summer — you need restoration, balanced hormones, deep sleep, and unapologetic confidence. New series. Eight years deep. Same nonsense. We're kicking things off with a belter… Pascal Chimbonda and trust us, he delivers. Perhaps the most laid-back man in the world, but my word he's got some stories. Rocking up at Wigan without speaking a word of English, his time there was eventful on and off the pitch. A brilliant debut season saw him earn a shock call-up to France's World Cup squad but it all ended in dramatic fashion when he handed in a transfer request in the dressing room straight after the final game of the season. With front-row seats for Zidane's infamous headbutt, we find out exactly what Wigan's Pascal Chimbonda says to French legend Zizou after he's potentially cost him a World Cup winners' medal. Dubbed Roy Keane's “worst ever signing”, we dig into what really went wrong between them and along the way hear plenty of stories about being pinned up by Big Dunc, Jimmy Bullard's antics, and sharing a dressing room with Browny at Doncaster. The family policing system considers parents with mental health issues and other disabilities to be an inherent threat to their children. We reject that premise. Because of ableism, the legacy of eugenics, and the violence of poverty, disabled parents face a high risk of separation by the family policing system. In this episode, Dr. Robyn Powell discusses how the child welfare system weaponizes the idea of “predictive neglect” to discriminate against parents with disabilities and further enshrine stigma around mental health. How can we build a future where disabled families are supported through care, community, and trust—not surveillance and punishment? Reclaiming Safety is upEND's exploration of frequently asked questions about family policing abolition. This discussion about disability justice is an accompaniment to the essay Reclaiming Safety for Children of Parents with Disabilities by Charisa Smith. About Our Guest: Dr. Robyn Powell is an Assistant Professor of Law at Stetson University College of Law and a Senior Research Associate at the Lurie Institute for Disability Policy at Brandeis University. Her work focuses on disability law, reproductive justice, family regulation, and constitutional law, with a special emphasis on the rights of disabled parents and the abolition of the family policing system. She is the principal author of the National Council on Disability's landmark report Rocking the Cradle, Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities and Their Children, and her scholarship—featured in leading law reviews and interdisciplinary journals—examines how law and policy continue to reinforce ableism and the legacy of eugenics.Episode Notes: Support the work of upEND: upendmovement.org/donateEpisode Transcript: upendmovement.org/podcast/episode301/ Read Reclaiming Safety: upendmovement.org/safety Dr. Powell recommends people learn more about disability justice through Sins Invalid and the Disability Visibility Project.Connect with Dr. Powell at Stetson Law.Credits: Hosted by Josie Pickens and Jaison OliverProduced by Sydnie MaresMixed by Imani Crosby

Teaching Clients The Value Of Patience In PR Episode Summary In this episode of That Solo Life, Karen Swim and Michelle Kane tackle a common frustration for PR professionals: managing unrealistic client expectations. We have all heard the requests to "make it go viral" or "get us on the Today Show" immediately. While these aren't bad goals, they are often the wrong strategy for sustainable business growth. Karen and Michelle discuss why public relations isn't failing, but rather why clients might be hiring pros for the wrong reasons. They explore the "shiny object" syndrome and why one-hit wonders rarely build lasting credibility. The conversation digs deep into the psychology of the client relationship, revealing how impatience often stems from fear and a lack of trust. You will learn how to build trust during the business development phase, how to proactively address objections, and why you must be willing to walk away from business that forces you to work in panic mode. Episode Highlights 01:41 – The Core Issue: Karen introduces the topic: PR isn't failing, but clients may be hiring you for the wrong reasons or with the wrong understanding of the industry. 02:12 – The "Viral" Trap: Michelle discusses the common client desire for instant fame and why hitting a specific trade publication is often far more valuable than a flash-in-the-pan viral moment. 03:35 – Sustainability vs. Visibility: Why a single hit on a morning show doesn't equate to long-term credibility or sustainable business impact. 05:34 – Rocking the Boat: The importance of educating clients and setting the right expectations early, even if it feels risky during the sales process. 07:50 – The Trust Factor: Karen identifies that client impatience is often a symptom of distrust or fear about their investment, and how pros can address this head-on. 12:47 – Honesty Wins: Why telling a client "no" regarding unrealistic timelines (like speaking engagements) actually builds your authority and trust. 14:20 – Protecting Your Peace: A reminder never to let a client's lack of patience force you into working under pressure and panic.
