Kasturi Waves

I am not a historian. The facts learnt through history books and the web form part of my narration. Bangladesh got it's Independence from Pakistan on 16th December 1971. The revolt to separate from being part of Pakistan was fuelled by the parallel revolt of discarding the policy of adopting Urdu instead of the mother language of the erstwhile East Pakistan, Bengali. This is a rare example in World History, where a whole nation, irrespective of religious differences, fought together for reinstating the pride of their mother-language. This is my humble tribute on the International Mother Language Day, to honour the brave-hearts who have sacrificed their lives for their mother-tongue and motherland and on the 50th year of the Independence. This is a poem in one of the bengali local vernacular dialect. It echoes that Women's liberation can happen when every girl child from all parts of the World receive education. Gender equality is possible only when the girl child understands that education shows the way to independence. Sanjhli, a girl from rural Bengal who works as maid in so-called upper-class homes of the village, stands first in the Board examination. This piece is a soliloquy of Sanjhli.

Sukumar Ray was a genius who could mellifluously blend wit & satire into poems and present them as nonsensical rhymes & stories. Within a short span of 36 years of life, he had proved time and again that he was larger than life. This is my tribute to the exceptional poet and writer of Bengali literature.
