Weekly Sermons from Rev. Dawoon Kim. New Harvest Church was established in the summer of 2018 in hopes of a new harvest. What do we mean by that? We have seen a mass exodus of young people from the church, especially the Korean-American Church. Some have lost their faith and others have grown skeptical and cynical of "traditional religion". Why has modern religion failed? A.W. Tozer once said, "Modern religion focuses upon filling churches with people. The true gospel emphasizes filling people with God." Our goal is to create a church that fills people with God through faithful preaching and teaching of the Gospel found in the Word of God, through a commitment to the making of disciples as the Lord commanded, and through the power of the Spirit . In the same way that Abraham laid down his own son for the sake of the descendents that he could not see, we want to build this church for the generations that will come after us, for the New Harvest. The name New Harvest also reminds us that we have a very small role in the work of God. The farmer does not have the power to make the plants grow. He simply plants, waters, and reaps the harvest created by nature. And we simply seek to reap the harvest that God causes to grow among us.

In Jeremiah 29:11, it says that God has a plan for us, a plan to prosper and not harm us. What is God’s plan for us? Surprisingly, God’s plan is for us to leave Jerusalem and go to Babylon. [Sermon on Jan. 31, 2021; Bible Passage - Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14]
Christopher Hitchens once said: “Once we assume a creator and a plan, it makes humans objects of a cruel experiment whereby we are created to be sick and commanded to be well.”And Christianity feels like a cruel experiment at times since the Bible is full impossible commands that we can never live by. This is why God gives irresistible grace.[Sermon on Jan. 24, 2021; Bible Passage - Jeremiah 2:30-31, 5:3, 8:4-8]

Even though we say that God is everywhere and that Jesus is always with us., we often feel that Jesus is missing from our lives. That Jesus is nowhere to be found. It seems like we have lost Jesus in the same way that Joseph and Mary somehow lost Jesus on their way back from Jerusalem. Where can we find Jesus? We can find him at his Father's house. We are going to at why Jesus appears to be missing from our lives and how we can find him again.[Sermon on Dec. 27, 2020. Bible Passage: Luke 2:41-52]
When you think about Jesus, what do you feel? The Bible says that when Herod heard about Jesus, he was disturbed. We assume people, especially Christians, would receive the news of Christ with joy and gladness. But if we are honest, thoughts of being closer to God fills with fear rather than delight. We are also disturbed by Christ. Why does Christ disturb us? [Sermon on Dec. 6, 2020 - Advent Season]
What do you think of when you think about Christmas? You probably think of gifts, spending time with family, or peace on earth - happy joyful thought. But when Joseph heard about the birth of Jesus, Joseph thought about quietly divorcing his wife. But this is not unique, many Christians also want to quietly divorce Christ. [Sermon on Nov. 29, 2020 - Advent Season]
We may want to dismiss the Christian hope of heaven as a foolish fantasy; a childish dream. It's a great thought, a nice idea, but it is totally unrealistic and impractical. Heaven doesn't help us live in the real world. Who has the time to daydream about such silly "unuseful" things when we have real problems to deal with? The idea of heaven is a good distraction, a nice diversion, from the crushing troubles of the world… An opiate for the masses. But the Christian hope of heaven is not a useless childish fantasy. It is not a diversion or distraction from the real world. It is the real world. Because we have overcome the world. [Sermon on Nov. 22, 2020. Part 11 of the 1 John Sermon Series]1 John Sermon Series Description:Have you ever wondered if you are believing the right thing? It seems that many of the young new believers of the 1st century were struggling with the same questions and doubts plaguing believers in the 21st century. How do I know if I am truly saved? How can I have genuine assurance of salvation? What is Christianity really all about? In this sermon series, we will follow the Apostle John as he teaches us what is a true Christian, how we can know that we know God, how we can have true assurance of salvation, and other foundational truths.
John says that God's commands are not burdensome. But this seems to contradict our own experience. For many of us, obeying God ends in failure, futility, and disappointment. We find obeying God to be hard and joyless. Yet Jesus says that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Then how come we find God's commands to be so burdensome? [Sermon on Nov. 15, 2020. How can I know that God is real? How can I be sure that God exists when no one has ever seen him? It would be nice if God would give me a sign? Men have tried to prove the existence of God through reason, logic, and empirical data. But John says we can know God through his perfect love ... and it's not what you think. How do we know that Christianity is the one true religion? There are so many different religions out there. And don't they all teach the same things like love one another and be good people? Isn't offensive to say that Christianity is the only faith that got it right? And there are also questions about which Christianity is right. There are so many denominations. The Apostle John in 1 John 4 that there is a way to "test the spirits" and see which are from God. The answer might surprise you. [Sermon on Nov. 1, 2020. Have you ever been called out by someone? "How can you call yourself a Christian when ... ?" We do many things that don’t line up with the faith we profess. And our hearts condemn us. We question if we are truly saved. So what are we supposed to do when our hearts condemn?[Sermon on Oct. 25, 2020. In 1 John 3:12, John says, “Do not be like Cain...”. At first, it is insulting to think John would even compare us to Cain. I am nothing like Cain! But maybe, we resemble Cain more than we would like to admit... So what was Cain like? [Sermon on Oct. 18, 2020. Christianity can become a bunch of tired clichés that no longer move us. But Apostle John calls us in 1 John 3:1 to see what kind of glorious love that the Father has lavished on us - a love that is nothing but cliché. Come join us as we discover the true meaning of those old clichés. [Sermon on Oct. 11, 2020. How do we know if someone is a genuine Christian? This often leads people into a long complicated discussion about the right belief and theology. But John gives a very short and yet daunting answer. Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did. And the essence is captured in this one new command. Obeying this command will bring you closer to God than theology and knowledge ever could. It is a sad fact that many of the same people who confidently declare that they are Christian will also confess that they don't "know Him". They are not sure if they are going to heaven even though they have been going to church for years. Maybe that's you. All this church and religion, and you still are not sure if you are Christian, if you believe. You are still plagued with doubt. But John explains to us how we can know if we really know. How we can have confirmation. [Sermon on Sept. 27, 2020. Part 3 of the 1 John Sermon Series]1 John Sermon Series Description:Have you ever wondered if you are believing the right thing? If you die tonight, are you sure that you will go to heaven? This is a question that has been asked in countless revivals and church meetings; and a question that has haunted countless Christians. It seems that so many Christians struggle with doubt. How can I know that I am truly saved? How can I have assurance of salvation? John says we can be confident about our salvation if we "walk in the light." [Sermon on Sept. 20, 2020. The Ligonier Ministries recently released their 2020 State of Theology survey which asks the question, "What do Americans think about Jesus Christ, the Bible, truth, and ethics?" The results of the survey is clear. The state of theology in America is in a state of confusion. The early Church was also in a state of confusion. John was writing the letter because of "those who were trying to lead them astray" (1 John 2:16) and because of the presence of many "anti-christs" in the church. But John calls to focus on which that was from the beginning. [Sermon on Sept. 13, 2020.
