Welcome back to Psyched! It's the final episode of the season and Maheen & Katie are here to review what we've learnt so far! We've covered a lot in the last 8 episodes, from Anxiety, to Social Media, and the power of Music! There's a lot to cover, so we decided to have a chill night with face masks and cups of tea whilst we discussed it all! Join in with our girls' night in and listen to us reminisce and have a natter as usual. Thanks so much for your support so far, and we can't wait to bring you more episodes in Season 2!
TW: DARK TOPICS SUCH AS RAPE AND MURDER ARE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE! Welcome back to Psyched! This episode is slightly different to our usual wellbeing themed episodes, as Maheen and Katie explore the world of forensic psychology. like many other people, we are fascinated by true crime, and we wanted to see how mental health and the criminal justice system interact. We discuss the argument of 'rehabilitation vs punishment' in prisons, pleading 'non-guilty by reason of insanity' in court, whilst also discussing some of the world's most famous criminal cases, including the Yorkshire ripper. Discussing mental health at a sociological level demonstrates how looking after one's mental health can have a positive impact on the way society functions as a whole, and therefore we believed this an important episode to record. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed creating it!
TW: INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS & DEPRESSION Welcome back to Psyched! This week, Katie & Maheen sit down and chat to Chloe-Ann about her experiences over the last few years with OCD, anxiety and depression. She opens up about her experiences within Sixth Form and University, including how the lockdown affected her, how she uses music to cope, as well as her experiences with school counsellors and talking therapies. It was amazing that she felt comfortable opening up to us and using our platform as a way to encourage talking about your mental health. We hope that you find her as inspiring as we do, and that this conversation encourages you to speak out if you are struggling! We hope you enjoy:)
Welcome back to Psyched! Whilst Psychology may be our shared interest, we each have many other passions that are huge parts of our lives. For Katie, it is music and this week she takes the floor to nerd out about the psychology behind it all. Although Katie may be studying music at university, Maheen also adores music and so we both share anecdotes about our strongest musical memories and talk about how and why we use music in our everyday lives. As usual, we cover so many subtopics including our musical role models as children, how music represents our identity and personality, as well as the many health benefits that music can have for our mental and physical wellbeing. Conscious that we didn't want to make this podcast a lecture, this is merely an introduction to the extremely interesting topic that is music psychology. We wanted to make this episode as accessible as possible, so that everyone can appreciate the topics discussed, whether you are a musician or not. If you are curious to find out more, however, please go to our Instagram where you will be able to find more resources and books that Katie recommends. We really hope you enjoy this episode, as we particularly enjoyed recording this one! Keep your eyes peeled for the next episode when it's Maheen's turn!
Welcome back to Psyched! We are back to tackle the topic of Social Media with our guest (& best friend) Holly! You thought we were chatty enough just the two of us, but now we have our third musketeer to add to the mix. Holly is a wellbeing & lifestyle blogger who posts regularly on Instagram about the ups and downs of her life, being openly honest with the aim of creating a realistic feed and encouraging open conversations. This week covers a wide range of topics including the pros and cons of life online, external societal pressures and how to create a 'healthy' feed in order to benefit your mental health. But as usual, many other areas are explored and we just have a good ol' catch up. So settle down, make a cuppa and be a fly on the wall to one of our Facetimes:)
Welcome back to Psyched! After a short hiatus, Maheen and Katie are back and ready to chat. This week we tackle the topic of Men's mental health, and the stigma surrounding it. In a world where men are often told to ‘man-up' and shy away from showing emotion out of fear of seeming weak, conversations about mental health can be difficult to approach. However, In order to demonstrate what it is really like to be a man in today's society, we felt it necessary to introduce a guest who knows what it is like. So, today we are talking to our friend Oli Gent, who talks to us about his experiences with bullying, the importance of self-care and ‘Movember', alongside many more important topics that we believe necessary to discuss. We hope that by hearing Oli's story, you'll feel courageous to take steps to open up about your own experiences and no longer feel embarrassed about speaking out.
Welcome back to Psyched! Episode 3 is our first official mental health episode and this week, Maheen and Katie tackle the subject of anxiety, ranging from Maheen's fear of having to make a phone call, all the way to discussions of panic attacks and dissociation. We want to extinguish the taboo around anxiety, and promote a positive conversation that encourages people to open up about their experiences, and not feel as if their feelings are invalidated. As usual, we discuss many topics over the course of the episode, including the causes for different types of anxiety, high functioning vs low functioning anxiety and self-help tools that you can use if yourself or a loved one may be feeling overwhelmed. We share our own personal anecdotes that allow you to hear about our experiences, in the hope that this discussion will allow you to feel comfortable to do the same. However, we are not medical professionals, so if you do believe that you are struggling, please go along to our Instagram page @psyched_podcast for links with information about how to get help.
Welcome back to Psyched! Episode 2 involves us investigating our results from the 16personalities test. With Maheen as ‘The Campaigner' and Katie as ‘The Protagonist', we find out more about ourselves and each other on an even deeper level, according to the four dimensions of personality. As usual though, many subjects are covered, including the importance of a positive mindset, the power of our gut instinct, and self-esteem. Sprinkled alongside these are some personal anecdotes, including Katie's exploding microwave and Maheen's life lessons that she learnt from Disney Channel during the first lockdown. It's a rollercoaster ride of psychoanalysis, but we hope you enjoy and would love to hear what the personality test reveals about you too! Here's the link to try it out yourself !! https://www.16personalities.com/
Here it is - the first episode of Psyched! We are so excited that this episode is finally here and we can't wait for you to hear it. This episode's focus is on getting to know us so that you can understand who we are and why we are here creating this podcast. We discuss the origins of our friendship, our interests and our life goals for the future. But, in typical Maheen and Katie style, we go on a million tangents and discuss many other topics, including the effects of a good ol' cry, the ups and downs of first year at University, as well as the importance of talking about your feelings when you feel like you are struggling. So pop in your headphones, grab the snacks and a cuppa, and get cosy while you listen to us nerd out and chat.
