Leaders in Conversation is the podcast in which leaders share their life and leadership stories; weaving together the people, places and experiences that have shaped their values, beliefs, passion and purpose to encourage and inspire you to be even more confident and courageous in your leadership.ABOUT THIS EPISODEI had the pleasure of meeting Nick through a mutual colleague, Thurstine Basset. Together they were writing a book entitled ‘Trauma, Abandonment and Privilege' and invited me to contribute something of my own experience. I was delighted to be asked by Nick to review his most recent book, edited by him, and released in April 2025, The Un-Making Of Them - Clinical Reflections on the Boarding School Syndrome. In our conversation Nick offers valuable insights into:Why understanding our emotions is so important in our lives and leadership; The existential dynamics of power and vulnerability, and their relevance and importance to leadership; How dissociation disconnecting from ourselves and our environment - has become the engine of the modern world; The importance of learning about what transference is and group dynamics in leading, coaching, mentoring and facilitation.Nick's Three Key Encouragements to Leaders - taken from three principles given to Nick by the NHS to help with managing osteoarthritis: Understand your feelings: who you are, so your emotions can guide you rather than your feelings govern you;Exercise: practise new ways of being and behaviour;‘Lose weight': notice and let go of those things that are no longer serving you in order to be lighter, and to lighten what you are carrying. To Contact Nick:Woundedleadersco.ukBoardingschoolsurvivors.co.ukGenderpsychology.comAbout NickNick Duffell has a degree in Sanskrit from Oxford and is a psychotherapist, psychohistorian and author. His first book, 'The Making of Them: the British Attitude to Children and the Boarding School System' received wide critical acclaim, including endorsements by the British Medical Journal and John Le Carré. Here he set out his pioneering research in group therapy with ‘boarding school survivors,' as he provocatively named adult ex-boarders. Nick co-founded the Centre for Gender Psychology and co-authored 'Sex, Love and the Danger of Intimacy.' A contributor to the University of Surrey Human Potential Group's 'Dictionary of Personal Development' and to many psychological journals, Nick is committed to the development of psychohistory as a tool for understanding current world problems. He is particularly interested in promoting a Depth-Psychology perspective of issues which affect our public life very deeply, such as identity and emotions, fear and vulnerability, but about which political commentators currently lack the means to properly address. His books include ‘Wounded Leaders: British Elitism and the Entitlement Illusion - a Psychohistory,' 2014, and ‘The SIMPOL Solution: solving global problems could be easier than we think' with John Bunzl. He contributed chapters to ‘The Political Self,' (Karnac 2016) and to ‘Humanistic Psychology: Current Trends, Future Prospects', (Routledge 2017). He has recently worked on an experimental project at UCL to use VR technology in the treatment of developmental trauma, and his latest book 'The Un-Making of Them: Clinical Reflections on Boarding School Syndrome' is published by Routledge in April...

The first of our mid-week podcasts that will be published in the lead up to the election features two figures on opposite ends of the political scale. First up, a Senate candidate from the Victorian Socialists, Jordan Van Den Lamb, better known by his online persona Purple Pingers. Jordan is in the headlines again this week after Anthony Albanese had a shot at him because he is encouraging people in Victoria to squat in empty houses in response to the housing crisis. He's got some rather radical ideas and he does represent the fringe in Australian politics, but as we know in Australian politics, sometimes the fringe even gets a start. The second interview you'll hear is with more of an establishment figure in politics. He's an American named Kyle Middleton. He worked on the Kamala Harris campaign in the last US presidential election and has a lot of interesting insights about what went wrong and what could have been done differently. We chat about how the American political system differs to the Australian political system, but also how the American system is heavily influencing the current Australian federal election campaign. In this first episode of a two-part special from The Underground Podcast, hosts Kate and Phil dig into the root of the industry's biggest environmental pivot—going peat free. With decades of dependency on this “gold standard” of growing media, why is it now so crucial to leave peat behind? And why is it proving so hard to replace? From the carbon cost of extraction to the slow regeneration of peatlands, this episode explores the environmental urgency driving the move away from peat. But this is no simple switch. Through conversations with leading scientists, manufacturers, campaigners, and trade leaders, we uncover what made peat so effective—and why sustainable alternatives must work harder to match its performance.Whether you're a professional grower, a home gardener, or simply peat-curious, this episode lays the groundwork for understanding what's at stake and what's next in this growing media revolution. Episode 2 will pick up the trail, delving into the practical realities of making peat-free work.Featuring:Elaine Gotts – Research & Development Scientist, Levington / Evergreen Garden CareSimon Blackhurst – Horticulture ConsultantWill Scott – Team Leader, Heart of Eden (AHS Limited)Jane Hartley – Brand Portfolio Manager, Evergreen Garden CareSteve Harper – Chair, Responsible Sourcing Scheme & Managing Director, Southern TridentSally Nex – Environmental Gardener & Campaigner, Peat-Free PartnershipFran Barnes – Chief Executive, Horticultural Trades AssociationJane Lawler – Marketing Consultant & HTA Board MemberDan Durston – National Sales Director, Durston'sToby Thomas – Managing Director, RocketGro
The driver licensing system may be in for a government overhaul. Under proposals released yesterday, the practical driving test for a full licence will go, and fewer eyesight tests will be needed. A clean record would be needed for restricted drivers to gain to their full licence, the demerit threshold for learner and restricted drivers would fall to 50, and there'd be zero alcohol limits for learner and restricted drivers of any age. Road Safety Campaigner Greg Murphy joins the show to discuss the changes. LISTEN ABOVE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stance visits London to explore the Tate Gallery show The 80s: Photographing Britain with campaigner Marc Thompson. The exhibition examines how photographers used the camera to respond to the seismic social, political, and economic shifts of the era, including the rise of Thatcherism, race uprisings, and the AIDS epidemic. It highlights photography as a vital tool for social representation, cultural celebration, and artistic experimentation, spanning landscapes, self-portraiture, and social documentary during this pivotal and highly creative period. Marc Thompson, a Brixton-born cultural leader and prominent British campaigner with over three decades of experience in HIV activism and education, joins Chrystal for a tour of Tate Britain. Together, they engage with the works of photographers such as Ajamu X and Rotimi Fani-Kayode, discussing the legacy of Black queer voices in shaping modern Britain, the cultural significance of Brixton as a hub for activism, creativity and nightclubs, and the ongoing fight for healthcare equity faced by marginalized communities today. A North Clare healthcare campaigner has lambasted TDs for their "farcical" decision to vote against noting the final Oireachtas report on assisted dying. The Dáil has agreed to note the final report of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying which seeks to legalise assisted dying in restricted circumstances, with 73 deputies voted in favour and 59 against. The note won't have any material effect on Irish law as a bill would have to be passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President to make its way into legislation. Lahinch-based Patient Advocate for the Programme Improvement Board of HSE Midwest, John Wall, says given that noting the report doesn't immediately impact legislation, voting against it is a cynical move.

Since winning the Women of the Year, Window on the World Award in 2007 in recognition of her unwavering campaigning for the rights of victims of forced marriage, domestic violence and honour killings, Jasvinder has been awarded a CBE and was made a Dame in the King's Birthday Honours list this year. It's all a far cry from her strict upbringing and arranged marriage to a stranger in India which she was informed about at the age of 14. Running away from home, she lost everything she'd ever known and faced many challenges as well as heartbreaking tragedy, all of which only cemented her determination to help others facing the same injustices and cruelty. Jasvinder describes what life was like growing up in her fiercely traditional Indian family and the traumatic, and still deeply felt, ramifications of choosing to run away rather than face a forced marriage like her sisters. She shares the roots of her campaigning work and reveals how long it took for her message and mission to gain any traction, and why she had to check under her car every morning before doing the school run with her children.

In this episode, we talk to Matt Finch, UK Policy Manager at Transport & Environment (T&E), who shares insights into the challenges and opportunities in sustainable aviation.Finch discusses T&E's role as Europe's leading advocate for clean transport and provides a critical perspective on current efforts to decarbonise the aviation industry. He highlights several key issues:The lack of fuel duty on aviation fuel, which Finch argues artificially suppresses the cost of air travel and hinders the transition to more sustainable alternatives. The UK's Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate, its strengths and weaknesses, and the challenges in scaling up SAF production. The potential of alternative technologies such as hydrogen and electric aircraft, and the need for stronger government support to accelerate their development and adoption. The environmental impact of airport expansion and the need for more stringent conditions on growth. The importance of addressing non-CO2 impacts of aviation, which Finch says account for two-thirds of the sector's overall climate impact.Throughout the conversation, Finch advocates for more ambitious policies and actions to address aviation's environmental impact, while remaining cautiously optimistic about the potential for progress in the sector. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Hiske Arts, Campaigner at Fossil Free Netherlands (Fossielvrij NL), who explains why climate activists don't buy the aviation industry's commitment to addressing climate concerns. Today on the show Steven and Shaun discuss two major stories – the potential cuts to the UK's RNIB technology service for blind people and Steven's recent suspension from the X/Twitter platform. The guys dive into a discussion about social media following Steven's suspension, which Steven now knows the reason for and shares how others can avoid this pain. It leads to a perhaps unsurprising conversation about the role X has in our society and whether platforms like Mastodon are better places to go.Next up Steven brings us the news that RNIB in the UK is going to potentially cut a major service that helps blind and low vision people to access technology. The Royal National Institute of Blind People's Technology for Life team is made up of a number of blind and low vision people itself and provides an essential service to those who need access to tech following a diagnosis of sight loss. Campaigner and trustee of the Eye Matter charity in the UK, Rachel Bowden, joins Steven by phone to explain her decision to set up a petition to challenge the upcoming decision by the charity, which also faces a massive £10 million ($18 million CAD) cut in its budget over the next decade. In this episode, we talk to Ali Warrington, Senior Campaigner at Possible, a UK-based climate charity that enables people to take practical action on climate change. Possible has been at the forefront of climate action and has been instrumental in lodging formal complaints against airlines like Virgin Atlantic and British Airways for their greenwashing claims. The charity, along with other climate groups has also taken the UK government to court over its Jet Zero strategy.Warrington believes that the aviation industry's current approach to sustainability is dramatically insufficient. She points out the limitations of the current decarbonisation solutions – including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), hydrogen, and electric aircraft – and expresses scepticism about their scalability and effectiveness. She also expresses concern about the enormity of resources, both natural and monetary, that would be needed to make these solutions a reality. Ultimately, Warrington states, demand reduction is the only pragmatic way to cut aviation's share of emissions.Warrington also points out the inequality in air travel in the UK – just 15% of people take 70% of flights annually, with half the population not taking any flights at all. She supports the idea of a frequent flyer levy, to progressively tax individuals on the number of flights they take. She also emphasises the need for a systemic change in global travel infrastructure, and advocates for a shift towards train travel or other low-carbon transportation options, whenever possible. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Hiske Arts, Campaigner at Fossil Free Netherlands (Fossielvrij NL), who discusses the climate activists' scepticism about the aviation industry's commitment to addressing climate concerns.
