Dr. Travis Kelter wrapped up our Virtual Lecture by presenting on an issue we are seeing more and more in horses - Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). EMS is a characteristic collection of clinical signs in horses that put them at high risk for developing laminitis. A key feature of EMS is insulin dysregulation and results from interaction between genetics and environment. Risk factors also include abnormal fat distribution, predisposition to weight gain and resistance to weight loss, among others. Dr. Kelter's presentation walks horse owner's through the many layers of EMS - insulin dysregulation, obesity, the clinical signs, consequences of unregulated EMS, breed dispositions and genetics, as well as dietary management and medication available. Buying a new horse can be exciting, but as we all know, it can be nerve-wracking too! Today on the podcast we discuss the process behind a pre-purchase examination, how the buyer's expectations can dictate how in-depth the pre-purchase can be, the roles and responsibilities between owner and buyer, as well as the legalities around pre-purchase examinations.
On Episode 14 of the Riding To Excellence podcast, Energy Equine's own, Dr. Travis Kelter tackles the nebulous topic of "poor performance." He breaks down the common factors that lead to poor performance, what horses generally present when they are lacking performance, and the three main systems at play when it comes to poor performance - cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal. He also touches on fitness, realistic expectations of owners and adaptations that can all lead to your equine athlete not performing at their very best.
On Episode 13 we tackle the topic of laminitis with our in-house farrier, Matt Humpage, of Iron Force Farrier Services. Matt educates us on the multitude of factors that can cause laminitis and breaks down initial vs. chronic signs and symptoms of laminitis. Plus, he delves into how key the team approach can be in cases like these and how farriers and veterinarians can work together to tackle laminitis and get horses back on track quicker, and easier.

Then we segue into the bulk of the podcast - winter wellness. This deep freeze Alberta, and most of Canada, and the USA, has been experiencing has equestrians feeling particularly chalk full of cabin fever and worried about their horse's health and wellness. On Episode 5 of Riding To Excellence we launch a new series - Muscle Matters with Vitality Equine! Today we introduce you to Brigitte Meyer, the talented massage therapist behind Vitality Equine who ALSO happens to be the in-house massage therapist at Energy Equine. On this episode we talk with Brigitte about how she got started in the industry, what an equine massage therapist does, as well as the connection between chiropractics and equine massage. Then we delve into the "meat" of the podcast hip extension in the performance horse! Brigitte educates us on the main muscles that make up the function, common injuries to the area, how to prevent injury to this area and which equine athletes commonly deal with tension in the hip extensors. Plus, we maybe throw out some pop culture references as well - just to keep it fresh!
At Energy Equine's recent Sports Therapy Lecture Series, a study was discussed that provides evidence that glucosamine can be a prophylactic. On Episode Four of Riding to Excellence, we delve into “Influence of oral glucosamine supplementation in your hoses challenged with intra-articular lipopolysaccharide.” This study was published by researchers from Texas A&M University, including JL Leatherwood, KL Gehl and JA Coverdale in the Journal of Animal Science in August of 2016.
