#0250 What the Clancy Mistrial Reveals About Our Jury System That No One Wants to Admit - Further. Every. Day.

Further. Every. Day.

On September 4, 2026, the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy ended in a mistrial when a single juror would not convict. This episode of Further. Every. Day. traces trial by jury from the Hebrew elders at the gate to that hung jury in Plymouth County, and asks the question the case is really about: who is fit to judge, and what happened to the standard? We read the primary sources and trace every claim to its origin. The episode covers the biblical origin of judgment in the gates (Deuteronomy, Ruth, and the Mishnah's lesser Sanhedrin of twenty-three), the Athenian and Roman juries, English common law and Magna Carta, the struck jury and the older competence tradition, the American founding and the Sixth Amendment, and the twentieth-century shift from the screened jury to the random fair-cross-section jury (Fay, Carter, Peters, Taylor, Duren, Batson, and the Jury Selection and Service Act of 1968). It then walks the insanity defense from the Roman furiosus and the wild beast test through M'Naghten, Durham, the Model Penal Code, and the Insanity Defense Reform Act to Commonwealth v. McHoul, the exact rule the Clancy jury deadlocked under, and closes on the law of the hung jury and mistrial: manifest necessity, Perez, and Ramos. In this episode, RJ Hunt dives deep into the major contract decisions and offseason money moves shaking up the Detroit sports landscape.First, we look to the diamond to break down the Tigers' blockbuster deadline move, trading back-to-back Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers. Did Detroit do the right thing, or did they fold under pressure? Then, we look at the Detroit Lions making Jahmyr Gibbs the highest-paid running back in the league with a record three-year extension. Did the front office make the right call locking him up for that price? Finally, the main event: The Jalen Duren contract standoff. Duren is a restricted free agent looking for a massive payday, but the Pistons aren't budging. Are the Pistons being smart with their money, or is Duren being completely delusional about his current market value? We break down the red flags that explain why Detroit is hesitant to hand over the bag, while also acknowledging the undeniable upside and potential Duren brings to the floor. We also look at the reality of his restricted free agency—no other team has stepped up to offer him the money he wants, so we entertain the very real possibility of him taking the $9.6 million qualifying offer to bet on himself next summer.Drop your thoughts in the comments: Did the Lions and Tigers make the right moves, and should the Pistons pay Jalen Duren or make him play on the qualifying offer?Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell for more Detroit sports coverage!

Matas Buzelis wants to adjust his shot profile — and it could be exactly what his star leap needs. On today's Chicago Bulls Central, Haize breaks down why Matas wanting to reduce his three-point volume is not automatically a bad thing. After averaging 16.3 points while taking 6.4 threes per game and shooting 34.9% from deep, Matas may be looking to become more than just a rim-or-three scorer. The key is not abandoning the three-point shot — it is adding a reliable midrange counter that helps him become a true three-level scorer.Haize explains why the midrange is not dead, why bad midrange basketball is dead, and how a 10-to-15-foot pull-up could help Matas punish defenders who run him off the line. If Matas can become a better finisher through contact, attack closeouts, get to the free-throw line and add a reliable short midrange game, his Year 3 leap could change the Bulls' offensive ceiling. Then the show shifts to Jalen Duren, whose contract situation with Detroit could get very interesting. Duren struggled in the 2025-26 playoffs, but Haize explains why Bulls fans should not let one bad postseason erase the fact that he is a 22-year-old All-Star center who averaged nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds in the regular season. If Duren reaches unrestricted free agency in 2027, Chicago should be watching closely — but only after evaluating Nic Claxton, Caleb Wilson's shooting, and the long-term frontcourt fit. Finally, Haize connects the Sylvain Francisco story to Rob Dillingham. The Bulls nearly added a EuroLeague guard who could score, shoot, run pick-and-roll and organize the second unit. That should not discourage Rob — it should motivate him. If Dillingham can become a reliable bench scorer and secondary creator, he could save Bryson Graham from spending assets on another guard.

What's the deal with the Orlando Magic?  Is their window closed as far as being elite in the east?  They still have talent, but their offense is still sub-standard.  Bruce feels that the team will be in the mix for the Play In tournament but he does not have a great feeling about this team. 12:31 ... Jalen Brown is no longer a Celtic, so who is going to step up?  From a leadership standpoint, it has to be Jayson Tatum, but others like Derrick White, Hugo Gonzalez, and Baylor Scheierman need to all have solid seasons for Boston to challenge for the top 6 in the east. 14:43 ... World B agrees with Bruce that Derrick White needs to step up. 15:57 ... Ross asks Bruce if Tatum is capable of being a "fiery" leader and Bruce doesn't really know if Jayson is capable of adjusting his personality and mindset from his "too cool" exterior to someone who shows more emotion. 17:45 ... Atlanta has added Lu Dort and Ross wonders if Dort can bring the type of toughness to the Hawks that a guy like Dillon Brooks brought to the Suns?   World B loves Dort's perimeter defense and his presence gives the Hawks much better depth.  World B also feels Jalen Johnson has to continue his progress for the Hawks to excel.  Bruce thinks Dort is exactly the type of gritty veteran Atlanta needs and their fans will love.  Ross loves the move and thinks Dort's physicality will really improve the Hawks' defense. 22:17 ... The Portland Trailblazers have a new owner (Tom Dundon) and he has made some really unsettling moves since taking over the franchise.  There are rumors that the Blazers, who are battling with local Portland politicians over arena funding and other financial issues could end up leaving the city.   That would be devastating to the city of Portland and would give the city a real black eye. 24:14 ... Ross is very angry about the way that Dundon has treated their broadcasters like Kevin Calabro and Tom Haberstroh because he watched a lot of Blazers games and really enjoyed their telecasts. 25:32 ... World B feels Dundon has been an embarassment and cites the bad contract he gave new head coach Micah Nori as a really poor way to treat their new coach. 27:37 ... Bruce feels for the Portland fans, who are among the best in the NBA and since the Blazers are Portland's only major league team, their fans would be devastated if the team flatlines and eventually leaves town. 29:05 ... If you were a fan, would you rather be a Warriors or Clippers fan?  Bruce would rather be a 'Dubs fan but Ross and World B would rather be Clippers fans.  Everyone explains why they feel the way they do.  LA owner Steve Ballmer is the main reason that Ross and World B prefer the Clippers. 33:09 ... Will DeAaron Fox be on the Spurs the entire season?  Bruce feels he will because of his contract, which calls for him to be paid more than $222 million over the next 4 seasons.  It's such a bad contract that it's hard to see any team taking it on. 37:04 ... It's time for the always enjoyable "Card Challenge" segment where Ross picks random cards and asks Bruce and World B to react to the players spontaneously to prove their knowledge.  Jalen Duren of the Pistons is first for World B. 38:19 ... Next up is Klay Thompson of the Mavericks for Bruce 39:25 ... Kyrie Irving of Dallas is next for World B. 40:20 ... Tyler Herro for Bruce 40:57 ... Carmelo Anthony for World B. 42:29 ... Bruce Bowen for Bruce .... they'll be together on Wednesday at the Basketball Hall of Fame for a "HoopHall hangout" session with the fans. 44:17 ... Ross wraps the show and says goodbye TRT 44:30                 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In the wake of LeBron signing with the 76ers, Mike and Brendan continue to be cranky about public contract squabbling of Tarik Skubal and Jalen Duren. While Skubal seems to put his foot in his mouth routinely, Duren simply seems to be out of touch with how the rest of the NBA values his services. His pursuit of a max contract extension from the Pistons is a non-starter for Valenti.
