The Buck Fifty is the funding machine that helps support 8 local high school chapters of Drug Free Clubs of America. This program has changed the culture in these schools as over 50% of these teens have volunteered to join and committed to living a drug free lifestyle. This 150-mile relay monster takes teams of 10 runners through four state/national parks, backcountry roads, and historic Chillicothe, Ohio. These are the inspirational stories behind the race and cause we've gathered since 2015.
Michael talks about running and how it helped with his addiction, Buckfifty stories from its inception, and we talk snacks without our co-host, Chris Scott, while he eats a Speedway peanut butter bar on the beach.
Michael Hickman is the epitome of why we started The Buckfifty. After a lifetime of struggling with addiction and substance use, Michael found sobriety. He also found running. Then The Buckfifty found him. He has ran every year of the event. This episode Michael talks about his struggles with addiction, understanding the addictive mindset and how poweful it is, factors that lead to addiction, and most importantly where to find help.
Ultrarunner Kelly O'Dell joined the show to discuss her experience with The Buckfifty, running tips, and upcoming races on her schedule. Kelly ran on the 5-person team, the Badwater Bunch, named after arguably the hardest ultra-marathon on the planet, which all of the team members have run or will run (or won in Harvey Lewis' case). Besides eating a little "crow" when she has to tell Dave that she didn't think the race would work when she first heard about it, Kelly discusses her team's strategy, running for beginners, her own challenges that came with running, and her overall Buckfifty experience from a first-timer perspective.
Smitty, Chris Scott & Dave Huggins sat down to discuss what they all witnessed during the 2021 Buck Fifty Relay on April 16th & 17th 2021.
We had such a great show going with Chris Stangle that we had to create two shows. Keep listening, learning, and subscribing to all things Buck Fifty and RunFluent!!!
Chris is the founder of Don't Just Run RunFluent and we are thankful to have his expertise in creating The Buck Fifty Training Guide for this year's race. Listen in as he gives us a ton of advice as we prepare for The Buck Fifty this week.
Justin was an original Buck Fifty runner and has also participated in the event as a van driver. Justin has also been a Buck Fifty Team Captain so he knows a lot about the cat wrangling or leadership experience.
In this episode of Running Off at The Mouth, we hang out with our friend Jarrod DePugh. Jarrod has been around The Buck Fifty since the beginning and is a four-time driver in the event. He gives us a great perspective on what it is like to be behind the wheel, and why he loves the event. One of the best moments so far in Running Off at The Mouth is listening to host Chris Scott describe one of his favorite snacks.
Talking with Mr. Caplinger was a real treat to learn that he got into running because of The Buck Fifty. He has since run many races and has a real passion for the sport which gives him time to unwind after a long school day. Mr. Caplinger has run in every Buck Fifty Relay and been in a different running position each time so he brings a great perspective to our race, and show. Listen, enjoy and subscribe for future episodes.
We sit down with our friend Mike Throne and capture several different perspectives about The Buck Fifty, and Ross County Ohio. Mike is a Buck Fifty Runner, has also volunteered at Checkpoints, and been a huge Champion for our community.
Chillicothe, Ohio like many communities had a drug problem, but we also had a passionate group of citizens who wanted to do something to change the future. If we started to work at the ground level and save our youth, we could save our town. This is the beginning story of what became Southern Ohio's Premier 150 mile relay race.
