In this episode, the reality of teamwork in Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay is laid bare: this is not a challenge that anyone could possibly conquer alone. The logistics, physical demands, and relentless pace of a transcontinental relay require more than just individual grit—they demand a level of coordination, trust, and mutual support that only a true team can provide. Every runner, from the seasoned ultra veterans to those newer to the scene, must constantly communicate, adapt, and strategize together. Decisions about pacing, shift rotations, and even how to handle injuries or setbacks are made collectively, not in isolation. The episode makes it clear: one person's miscalculation or overexertion can jeopardize the entire team's success, and the only way forward is through unwavering collaboration and shared responsibility. Josh Kraus challenges listeners to abandon the myth of the solo hero. The Old Glory Ultra Relay is a crucible where egos are checked, and the focus shifts to the group's survival and triumph. The team's ability to pivot strategies based on terrain, weather, and the unpredictable toll on each runner's body is a testament to the necessity of collective intelligence and adaptability. Crew chiefs, support staff, and runners all play indispensable roles—no one is expendable, and no single person can carry the flag across the country alone. If you think you understand endurance, think again: this episode will force you to confront the hard truth that, in an event of this scale, individual achievement is meaningless without the power of the team. Step up, listen in, and be prepared to rethink everything you thought you knew about what it takes to accomplish something truly epic. Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay is not just an endurance event — it's a full-blown logistical and psychological battle, where the best-laid plans are destined to be shattered the moment the race begins. Episode 144 pulls no punches: the runners, all military veterans, are acutely aware that “no plan survives first contact with the enemy.” They have meticulously mapped out every shift, every handoff, every mile of the 3,000-mile journey from San Diego to Washington, D.C., but as Gavin Woody, an ultra-running legend and Army veteran, makes clear, the real test begins when the unexpected hits-fatigue, injury, missed connections, and the relentless grind of running, stopping, and running again, day and night, for fifteen days straight. The team's military backgrounds have prepared them for chaos, but nothing can fully simulate the unique, punishing rhythm of this relay, where recovery, communication, and improvisation are as critical as physical endurance. Listeners, don't underestimate the depth of this challenge. These runners are not just fighting their own limits-they're battling the unpredictable realities of a cross-country mission, where every variable can-and will-change. The relay is a living, breathing operation, demanding constant adaptation: when a runner falters, the team must instantly adjust; when terrain, weather, or logistics throw a wrench in the works, they pivot, recalibrate, and keep the flag moving. This is not a solitary ultra-marathon; it's a relentless test of teamwork under fire, where success depends on the ability to plan, adapt, and execute with military precision-and then throw the plan out the window when reality bites. If you want to understand true resilience, tune in and witness what happens when a plan meets the enemy, and only grit, ingenuity, and relentless drive carry the mission forward. Patriotism in America is not a monolith — it's a battleground of identity, sacrifice, and service — and this episode of Veteran Made rips off the veneer of easy answers. Host Carey Kight and guest Jordan Buck, a former Army Cav Scout, refuse to let listeners coast on tired clichés. They confront the reality that waving a flag or wearing a uniform is not the sum total of service. For Buck, who never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, the military was transformative, making him a better man. Yet, he's blunt: not every veteran's journey is the same, and not every act of service is recognized or understood. This episode demands that you stop measuring patriotism by a single yardstick. Service is not about the loudest display, but the quiet, relentless drive to give back in your own way, whether that's running an ultramarathon relay across the country or supporting your community at home. Listeners are challenged to interrogate their own assumptions about what it means to serve and what it means to be patriotic. Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay, where Buck and his team will run the American flag from coast-to-coast, isn't just a spectacle; it's a living, grueling testament to American service. The episode lays bare the divisions and judgments that simmer beneath the surface — who “counts” as a real veteran, whose sacrifice is “enough” — and then torches them. If you think patriotism is simple, this episode will force you to reckon with its complexity. It's a call to action: understand that service is different for everyone, and true patriotism means honoring every path, every sacrifice, and every story, not just the ones that fit neatly into your idea of what America should be. Let's go to the Appalachian Trail. The AT as it's called. Here's some stats. At just under 2200 miles It's longest hiking-only footpath in the world. Last year 1 of those finishers did it faster than anyone else. Thru-hiking the AT typically takes about 4-7 months, Tara Dower did in just 40 days.Tara shares the highs and lows of her journey. She opens up about what drives her to keep moving forward, the importance of curiosity and confidence, and the value of learning to suffer with purpose.

In this episode of Veteran Made, Zack Lever shares his compelling journey leading up to his participation in the Old Glory Ultra Relay. Initially selected as a team chief rather than a runner, Zack candidly discusses the internal conflict he faced when asked to contribute in a supporting role rather than running—a passion that defines him. Despite his initial hesitation, Zack leaned into the challenge, embracing the leadership role and preparing to guide his team through the grueling relay. However, when unforeseen circumstances opened a spot for him to run, Zack seamlessly transitioned back to his original aspiration, demonstrating resilience and adaptability. His story is a testament to the power of stepping outside one's comfort zone and finding meaning in contributing to a greater cause, even if it's not in the way initially envisioned. This episode challenges listeners to reflect on their own willingness to engage in hard, meaningful activities — especially when they don't align perfectly with personal desires. Zack's experience underscores the importance of embracing opportunities to serve and lead, even when they require sacrifice or compromise. As he prepares for the physically and emotionally demanding task of running multiple days with his team, Zack exemplifies how persistence, teamwork, and a commitment to something larger than oneself can lead to unexpected growth and fulfillment. The Old Glory Ultra Relay is not just a test of physical endurance — it is a crucible for leadership at every level, demanding relentless initiative, adaptability, and cohesion from all involved. Episode 141 with Cole DeRosa makes clear that pulling off an event of this magnitude requires far more than just elite runners; it calls for a military-grade approach to logistics, communication, and mutual accountability. From the top-level organizers at Team RWB, who orchestrate the complex web of support, planning, and logistics, to the sub-teams and individual runners, leadership is the engine that keeps the operation moving. The event's success hinges on leaders who can both direct and listen, who know when to step up and when to support, and who are unafraid to make hard decisions in the face of adversity — a reminder that the real challenge is not just the miles, but the orchestration of people, resources, and time under pressure. Savage shares his journey from serving in elite units like the 82nd Airborne and the 75th Ranger Regiment to finding purpose post-service through challenges like ultra-marathons and Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay. This conversation underscores the critical importance of continuous learning and adapting, as Savage reflects on how his military mindset of grit, teamwork, and pushing limits has shaped his approach to life as a civilian. He emphasizes the value of embracing discomfort, whether through physical endurance events or navigating personal transitions, as a way to discover one's true potential. Next up for Tara in 2025 is the iconic Western States 100 as a result of her Golden Ticket 2nd place performance at Black Canyon 100k. Tara also recently signed a record-breaking deal with Altra, a stunning example of her incredible rise in the sport. Tara has an incredible list of results and accolades, and says her favorite distance to tackle is the 100 miler, because it presents so many possibilities for adventure, but she's no stranger to setting FKTs, with records on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, Benton MacKaye Trail and the Colorado Trail. In episode 137 of Veteran Made, Zach Polega, a West Point grad and former Army Ranger, challenges veterans to take aggressive ownership of their post-service purpose. Polega, preparing for the grueling Old Glory Ultra Relay, emphasizes that the military equips service members with invaluable skills, but it's on individuals to leverage these abilities in civilian life. He argues against the entitlement mentality some veterans adopt, insisting that the onus is on each person to chart their own course and find new missions to pursue. Polega's approach to the relay exemplifies this mindset, as he combines his military experience with a willingness to learn from teammates with diverse backgrounds. Carey and Zach tackle the controversial topic of veteran identity head-on, asserting that clinging to military roles can hinder growth. They advocate for a radical reframing: instead of defining oneself solely by past service, veterans should view their military experience as informative but not definitive. This perspective allows for personal evolution and the pursuit of new challenges. Polega's participation in the Old Glory Ultra Relay serves as a prime example, showcasing how veterans can channel their skills into fresh endeavors while building new communities. The episode delivers a clear message: the responsibility for finding purpose and redefining identity post-service lies squarely with the individual, and embracing this challenge is key to thriving in civilian life. In this powerful episode of Veteran Made, Jason Wood shares his transformative journey from struggling veteran to elite ultrarunner, emphasizing the critical importance of taking full responsibility for one's health and wellness. Wood's story is a testament to the profound impact of personal accountability, particularly in the context of fatherhood. He describes how the realization that he needed to be a better example for his daughter became the catalyst for his remarkable transformation, pushing him from being out of shape and mentally struggling to competing at an elite level in ultra-endurance events. Wood's approach to change is both challenging and inspiring. He advocates for setting ambitious goals, breaking them down into manageable pieces, and consistently pushing through mental and physical barriers. His experience in ultra-running serves as a metaphor for life's challenges, demonstrating how the mental frameworks developed during extreme physical exertion can be applied to overcome obstacles in all areas of life. Wood's emphasis on community, particularly within the veteran population, highlights the importance of mutual support and accountability in achieving lasting change. Listeners will be challenged by Wood's no-excuses attitude and his call to action for veterans to lead the nation out of its current health crisis. His participation in the Old Glory Ultra Relay exemplifies how individual effort, when combined with a larger purpose, can create a powerful movement for change. This episode serves as a wake-up call for anyone struggling with their health or sense of purpose, offering a roadmap for transformation that starts with taking responsibility and embracing discomfort as a pathway to growth. Wood's journey from rock bottom to elite athlete is a compelling argument for the life-changing potential of committing to one's health and wellness, with the added motivation of being a positive role model for the next generation. Molly Hurford knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age. She also loved being active outdoors. But she had decided that, as a writer, she couldn't possibly also be an athlete. That all changed in college. Today Hurford embodies many identities, including owner/founder of Strong Girl Publishing, writer, podcaster, and athlete, including being an ultra runner. This story is all about how Hurford developed into the athlete she is today, and how her combined passions of writing and sports have become a powerful force for change and inspiration for Hurford herself, as well as the girls and women she writes for and publishes books for. A new fastest run has been set on the Te Araroa Trail, completing the approximately 3,000-kilometre route spanning the length of Aotearoa in 31 days, 19 hours, and 41 minutes. Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe spoke to Corin Dann.
Today on the show we have Tommy Lewis (@TommyLewisPT).He's an ultra-athlete, coach and founder of That's Runnable, a brand new community for runners. I speak to Tommy at a really interesting time. Tommy has just quit his job to go full-time on this passion of inspiring others to run. But his journey has not been linear. He started his running side project three years ago, and he's been slowly building up his following from 250 followers to hundreds of thousands. His story is an inspiring one, one built on passion, love and authenticity, and also one of false starts. Tommy quit his job prematurely when he decided to train as a personal trainer and moved to Bristol. But getting sick and not making enough money, he eventually admitted defeat and moved back to London to work at a startup. But not one for the corporate life, he applied lessons from his previous bold start and has built a plan and a savings pot so he can continue on his mission to get people outdoors and running for the benefit of their mental health and fitness. In this episode, which is a little longer than normal, we talk about the anatomy of going viral, how he films his famous videos, what powers him to run ultramarathons, how to avoid running burnout, how he got over his fear of posting online, and his plans for that's runnable. This really is a must listen for anyone wanting to get more into running, or to build an Instagram or TikTok following, or just to be inspired by Tommy's attitude to life. I hope you enjoy! Dr. Heather Salzer // #ICEPelvic // www.ptonice.com In today's episode of the PT on ICE Daily Show, ICE Pelvic faculty member Heather Salzer discusses that ultramarathon runners often exhibit a unique level of physical and mental endurance that enables them to tackle extreme distances, sometimes exceeding 100 miles. Heather discusses the concept that this capacity remains intact during the postpartum period as she recounts a personal experience with a woman she met during the Chuckanut 50K ultramarathon, who was five months postpartum and still performing exceptionally well. This runner had trained throughout her pregnancy and was accustomed to longer distances, making the 31-mile race feel relatively short for her. Heather reinforces that healthcare and fitness professionals often harbor preconceived notions about what postpartum athletes can or cannot achieve. Underestimating their capabilities can lead to unnecessary restrictions on their training and performance. Heather encourages practitioners to set aside these biases and act as supportive guides for these athletes. By doing so, they can help ultramarathon runners navigate their training safely and effectively, allowing them to pursue their passion without undue limitations.
