The American in the Chronicle Chamber crew, Scott Waldyn, jumps on the podcast this week to interview Juancho Vélez, the incredible colorist behind Defenders of the Earth, Defenders of the Earth: Dark Destiny, The Phantom vs. The Sky Band #1, and the upcoming The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons #1 from Mad Cave Studios. For comic book fans, Juancho Vélez has made a name for himself by contributing beautiful and rich colors to titles across the Mad Cave Studios slate, as well as work at DC and Marvel Comics. His eye for detail and knack for creating lasting moments through the use of light, darkness, and color informs readers' understanding of a scene. In this interview, Scott and Juancho talk about the art of coloring, including some behind-the-scenes of what went into creating some of the more colorful moments in Defenders of the Earth and The Phantom vs. The Sky Band #1. Questions asked:How many comics would you say you've colored? You've worked on both Defenders series at Mad Cave Studios. While very much in sync with the cartoon series, it has a grown up tone. I attribute that to your coloring work. How do you find the right tone to hit?Do you receive directions from editorial or communicate with the artist? Are there color palettes or preferences you have to keep in mind when working on licensed characters? With The Phantom vs The Sky Band, there are big contrasts between light and dark, from Baroness' mansion to a battle surrounded by flames, and a nighttime water rescue. What's your approach to balancing and juggling these colors? What's something you think readers should pay attention to with coloring?Where do you draw inspiration from? Whose art inspires you? What are some of the books you're most proud of? What are the standouts that surprise you?Are there characters/titles you'd love to work on that you haven't yet?Where can comic readers find you?Find Juancho Vélez on his Instagram profile at: https://www.instagram.com/juancho.velez25/. Look for his work in The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons #1 coming in June 2026!We are looking to interview more creators from the Mad Cave Studios comic book series, please contact us if you have any specific questions you would like to see asked.

Gary shares his Telemark/Nordic tale, from a very young age to today. As well, he chronicles how growing up in rural Southwestern Ontario and summering in Northern Ontario informed his choices later in life, schooling, activities, and the meeting with Joanie, his lifelong partner, while attending Seneca College and how they made a life of adventure together. They live just outside of Searchmont, Ontario where they continue to be very active in the paddling scene, and very importantly with land/shoreline conservancy of the Lake Superior environs.  Gary and Joanie are founding members of The Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy. He shares why this Conservancy is so important to he and Joanie as well as to other Canadians. I hope you enjoy this episode, which is hopefully only the first of a few more.

When blood sugar levels rise after eating, the pancreas releases insulin to orchestrate several vital metabolic changes across different body tissues. This hormone primarily encourages the liver and muscles to consume glucose and convert it into glycogen for long-term storage. Simultaneously, insulin triggers the GLUT4 transporter to pull sugar from the bloodstream into adipose and muscle cells while halting the production of new glucose. In fat tissue, the hormone promotes the absorption of fatty acids to build energy reserves while actively blocking the breakdown of existing fats. By balancing these stimulatory and inhibitory actions, insulin effectively manages energy distribution and storage throughout the body. These synchronized processes ensure that plasma glucose levels remain stable following a meal.

Rowan connects people, information, materials, and decisions across project teams, transforming complexity into coordinated action and the exceptional documents for which SOM is known.A passionate advocate for design intent, Rowan believes specifications are far more than paperwork at the end of a project. To him, they are a living thread woven from concept through construction, telling the story of why we build, how we build, and what systems and materials bring vision into reality.Where relationships, technical knowledge, innovation, and architecture intersect, Rowan often stands at the center, helping teams turn bold ideas into executable outcomes. In this episode, he shares his vision for a more collaborative future where architects, specifiers, contractors, manufacturers, and owners work from the same playbook to create smarter processes, stronger partnerships, and better buildings.

Episode 147: John DuncanIn this episode, I'm joined by model maker John Duncan, whose career spans nearly fifteen years at Industrial Light & Magic and includes work across Star Wars, Star Trek, Galaxy Quest, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and more.John talks about his early fascination with building miniatures as a kid, making models out of paper and cardboard, and how that instinct to just try things eventually led him into the film industry. What started as architectural model work and a stint in television quickly turned into a career at ILM, beginning in 1993, where he arrived for what was meant to be a two-week job and stayed for over a decade .We get into the realities of model making for film, learning to build for the camera rather than for close inspection, working under tight deadlines, and letting go of work when it needs to be modified or destroyed for the shot.John also discusses his time as a concept model maker on the Star Wars prequels, working with Doug Chiang to create what he describes as “3D blueprints” for the wider production. These models helped bridge the gap between design, practical builds and digital assets, ensuring consistency across departments. There's plenty here on specific projects too, including building the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact, working on the ships for Galaxy Quest, and contributing to the large-scale pirate ships in Pirates of the Caribbean. He also shares stories about unusual materials, problem-solving on the fly, and the collaborative nature of the ILM model shop.We also talk about the shift from practical models to digital effects, where miniatures still have a place today, and why physical builds continue to resonate with filmmakers and audiences alike.John is thoughtful, practical, and clearly still passionate about the craft. This is a great insight into a side of filmmaking that often goes unnoticed, but is absolutely fundamental to how these films were made.Topics coveredGrowing up building models and early creative influencesFirst steps into the film industry via architectural modelsJoining ILM in 1993 and working alongside industry legendsBuilding models for camera vs building for displayWorking on Star Trek: First Contact and Galaxy QuestConcept model making on the Star Wars prequelsCollaborating with Doug Chiang and George LucasThe idea of “3D blueprints” in film productionPractical effects vs digital effectsWorking on Pirates of the CaribbeanMaterials, techniques and problem-solving in the model shopReplica prop community and fan researchWhy physical models still matterThis podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support. Send a textWith a practice that integrates sculpture, moving image, performance and painting, Sydney based artist Todd Fuller is, at his core, a draughtsman. Underpinning all aspects of his practice is a love of drawing and a belief in its power as a democratic medium to connect, engage and delight audiences. For ten years, Fuller has been crafting hand-drawn animations that grapple with love and loss, as well as ideas of place, identity and community. Often narrative in form, these award winning works are derived from Fuller's experiences with different communities, sites and histories. He has been awarded a number of residencies that have informed and developed his practice, including time spent at Bundanon Trust, Hill End, Grafton Regional Art Gallery, as well as international stints at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, the British School of Rome, and recently the NG Creative Residency in Provence.A graduate of Sydney's National Art School, Fuller has exhibited widely across Australia over the last ten years. He was a finalist in the 2019 Sir John Sulman Prize, won the prestigious Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award in 2018, and his work is present in various public and private Australian collections, including the Parliament House Art Collection, Artbank, Sydney Harbour Trust, and numerous regional art galleries. Alongside his national success, Fuller has gained international attention, with his works in exhibitions in the United States, Italy, France, South Korea, Bangladesh, England, Singapore and Malta.Fuller's practice extends into curatorship and arts production, having held roles with Waverley Council, Biennale of Sydney, Sculpture in the Vineyards and d/Lux Media Arts. The areas under investigation within his curatorial practice overlap with his artistic output. Just Draw, the 2016 exhibition Fuller curated with Lisa Woolfe, which toured regional galleries, showcased artworks that exemplified the varied nature of contemporary drawing practices, a subject close to Fuller's heart. He is one half of interdisciplinary performance collective Flatline, and one third of the Hardenvale - our home in Absurdia touring initiative.Find out more from his website https://www.toddfuller.com.au
