Second-quarter GDP grew at a slower-than-expected annual rate of 1.5%, but much of the weakness came from temporary factors like lower inventories and reduced government spending rather than a broad slowdown in the private economy. Consumer spending remained strong, inflation continued to ease on a monthly basis, and private-sector demand was robust. While the Federal Reserve is still waiting for inflation to move closer to its 2% target before cutting rates, the underlying economic picture remains healthier than the headline GDP number suggests.
