Tonight we start off with some good news that Johnny is back in action! After many obstacles in the last year and a half he is finally cleared to start building some endurance. Then we follow up and expand on some stuff that we talked about on the last episode. After that we dive into the results from Moab. Then we deep dive into the Bigs Backyard Ultra World Championships which is up to over 60 countries now! Belgium is in currently in first overall and the only country with runners still going and three of them tied the record of 108 yards (set last year by Harvey Lewis) as we are recording. As I am typing these show notes the three runners decided to all call it quits after 110 yards, that's almost 460 miles!! We go over race results from the California Fall Classic 100K and 55K, Mines of Spain 100 and 100K, Grand Trail des Templiers 100K, Diagonale des Fous 100, Stone Steps 50K, Laurel Highlands 50K, Pony Express 100, Bimblers Bluff 50K, Uwharrie 100, and Delirium Ultra 24 hour. Today we're honored to share a very special interview with the great Harvey Lewis, one of the world's top ultrarunners of all time. (Also, like Courtney Dauwalter in our last episode, one of the nicest.) Harvey is not only an accomplished runner but also a dedicated high school teacher at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati. He runs to work every day on what he calls his "run commute," and I had the incredible opportunity to join him on one of those runs—from his home all the way to his school, winding our way through Cincinnatti and Kentucky, over and back across the beautiful Ohio River. In this episode, we'll talk about Harvey's journey as an ultrarunner, including his record-setting win at Big's Backyard Ultra, where he ran an astounding 454 miles over 4 and a half days. We'll dive into what drives him to push beyond physical limits, and his approach to inspiring others to live healthy, active lives. After relistening to and reflecting on this interview, I think that what comes through the most is not just what Harvey has to say, but how he says it. He truly has a passion, not just for running, but for inspiring and helping others—whether that's other runners, people that he passes on the road, his fellow competitors in a race, his students or animals. When we finished our run commute, I had the chance to meet with some of Harvey's students, and I asked them what it's like to have such an extraordinary person as their teacher. I'm grateful that they allowed me to share their responses, which will give you a real sense of the impact Harvey has, both inside and outside the classroom. Of course, I'm also grateful to Harvey for such a memorable run and for sharing so much with us. And, of course, we're all grateful to our partners at Brooks Running. For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation. Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. It could be the top of a mountain, a first-ever 5K, or peace of mind after a stressful day. So… let's run there. With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place. Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, a finish line, a cure for Parkinson's, more ethical treatment of animals, or first period government class at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati. Let's run there. Head to BrooksRunning.com to learn more.

Today we start off talking about David Roche's Leadville 100 course record that he set on Saturday, breaking a record that has stood since 2005. Also it was David's debut 100 miler which is a bit surprising since he has been around the ultrarunning world for so long. We also go over race results from Leadville, Tamalpa Headlands 50K, Squamish 50/50K, and the Marquette Trail 50/50K. Then we discuss Jim Walmsley's return to UTMB and talk about Harvey Lewis and what he recently accomplished. We go into a discussion on which race is the toughest between Western States 100, Badwater 135, and Bigfoot 200. Then we go over the FKT updates and through runs for Tara Dower, Mike Wardian, and Bronco Billy (Jeff Browning). We end the show looking at some of the video footage of Leadville posted by Matt Choi on his Instagram account. We start tonight's show off with race results and some commentary about Crazy Mountain 100, Burning River 100, Minnesota Voyager 50, Standhope 100, Never Summer 100K, Resurrection Pass 100, and Tushars Mountain Runs. We talk about Harvey Lewis's Badwater double, well, not a true double according to Marshall Ulrich but we still think it's pretty badass. Mike Wardian and Tara Dower are both doing the AT in August for charity. Tara is going for the FKT but we are not sure yet what direction she will be going. Mike is going North to South but planning on 50 days. We discuss the co-ed FKT summiting all 58 of Colorado's 14,000 peaks (14ers). There is a funny video on reddit of a random flock of sheep following a runner. We end with some of Snoop Dog's commentary on Badminton from the Olympics. Last fall, Harvey Lewis captured the international spotlight at Big's Backyard Ultra in rural Tennessee. The high school teacher broke a world record, running an astounding 450 miles in 108 hours—more than the distance from DC to Boston. But—I implore you—don't let his humility deceive you. Inside Harvey roams a myriad of animalistic tenacity ready to be unleashed. A beloved teacher at Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts, Harvey redefines human capability with 27 years of ultra-running experience, 115 ultras, podium finishes at Badwater 135, and a five-time USA National 24-hour Team member. Today, we explore Big's, including Harvey's readiness to run through another night, his approach to sleep deprivation, spirit animals, transcendence, and mindset. Harvey guides us through his coach-less training and the motivations behind his extensive running feats, racing for the Brighton Center, a Kentucky non-profit supporting families. Additionally, Harvey's fiancée, Kelly, provides exclusive insights into his personality and kindness, sharing charming details like stopping for lightning bugs and hosting popsicle parties. She discusses her ultra-running experiences and participation in Netflix's Squid Game Challenge. I immensely admire Harvey. He embodies humility, champions gracefully, and exudes a delightful presence—a hero the world needs. Instead of our regular “Couple of the Quarter” episode, we are bringing to you a “Duo of the Quarter.” On Sat, Oct 21 at 7am local time, the individual world championships of backyard ultra running commenced in Bell Buckle, Tennessee. The format sees racers run a 4.17-mile loop, called a “yard” in backyard ultrarunning, within a one-hour time limit, after which all finishers within the allotted time are tied for first place, and must present on the start line on the hour to go again. This continues until there is only one runner left standing, who must complete a solo yard to be awarded the win. After completing 107 yards & hours and covering 446 miles/718km, Ukrainian-Canadian and past guest Ihor Verys was the last person to DNF, assisting Harvey Lewis to a world record win. Racers were allowed only one person to crew and support them for the duration of the race, and he entrusted 52 year old friend and fellow ultrarunner Marina Striker with that task. To say she delivered is an understatement, and during this conversation you will hear how instrumental Marina's experience and support was in Ihor's success. You will also be treated with a few stories of things Ihor does not remember during the 5 days of running and you will get a glimpse into the militaristic discipline and mindset required by both crew and runner to keep moving for 107 hours straight. Dubbed “The Dream Team” on social media, these two athletes reveal what an unlimited mindset and unwavering belief can achieve.Connect with Ihor & Marina:Ihor's Instagram: @ihorverysMarina's Instagram: @marinas_trailrunning_questsConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! We put on some dinosaur onesies (our business formal) for this awesome Halloween episode! The big discussion was on UTMB's controversial announcement of a new race in Whistler, Canada, on the same weekend as the now-discontinued, grassroots race called Whistler Alpine Meadows. UTMB rode the sport's wave of exponential growth, gobbling up races to incorporate into their World Series. When Whistler Alpine Meadows was denied a permit, they swooped in and plopped a corporate race in its place. It's a fascinating mix of business strategy, economic models, relationships, and culture, and we try to break it all down in a nuanced and empathetic way. We accept that a rising tide lifts all boats, and we acknowledge that we benefit from it. But if that tide destroys the smaller boats (whether through intention or mere negligence), we need to reject that thesis of unrestrained growth. This could be a turning point in the future of endurance sports, and the community has the power. Before getting to UTMB's big blunder, we talked about training intensity distribution through the lens of a new review study! Across sports, endurance approaches coalesce around similar intensity distribution numbers, whether the sport involves the pool, the snow, or the trails. How wild is that? What are we seeing? In that convergence, there are lessons about how you structure your weeks and think about long-term growth. And there were so many other fun discussions! Topics: heat training via Halloween costumes, the sexiest dinosaurs, our feelings on ghosts, 2 show recommendations, the importance of easy training and how that influences weekly structure, why workout design may be less important than you think, speed development, a recap of Big's Backyard and Harvey Lewis' awesome achievement, the Javelina 100, and hot takes. This week we have a replay from the best of Dave and Joe, Chasing Tomorrow podcast co-show hosts, are talking to Harvey Lewis the winner of Big's Backyard Ultra and world champion backyard racer. Harvey set the world record with 85 loops in Bell Buckle, TN and showed the world how to run a backyard race to win. Harvey had an amazing year with two backyard wins and a win at the Badwater 135 and he seems to be able to do all of this with a managed effort and a great attitude. A gracious and supportive competitor Harvey recounts what it was like to run till there were no other runners and what he thinks the future holds for his record.
An amazing conversation with an absolute LEGEND! Plug in to hear us catch up with the one and only Harvey Lewis where we talk about his run commutes, his mindset, and his world wide adventures. From running 375 miles at Dead Cow Gully, capturing a podium spot at the Badwater 135 less than 2 weeks later, and then crushing 17K feet of vert at the Canadian Death Race, Harvey had quite the summer before getting back to run commuting for his teaching job. He is truly one of the best human beings on the planet. Paul Harvey - Lewis Powell
This episode is jam packed! I sit down with Harvey Lewis, just days after his finish at Badwater 135. And his Badwater run across Death Valley was less than 2 weeks after his 375 miles that he ran at Dead Cow Gully backyard ultra in Australia. We also talk about his documentary that just game out: Like Harvey Like Son, where he attempted the fastest known time, FKT, to run the entirety of the Appalachian Trail. I also found out that he ran the Arrowhead 135, which is a race across the frozen landscape of International Falls, Minnesota where temps have dipped to -45°F during the race. Harvey has also ran in the last two runnings of the Barkley Marathons, which is an invite-only 100-ish mile orienteering race at Frozen Head State Park that has only been completed 21 times by 17 runners. Again, so much to get to and I hope you enjoy this episode. I feel like there is a lot more to uncover with Harvey and more stories to share, but we try to uncover more of his adventures and the worst weather he has had to endure. Harvey partners with RoadiD, Newton, Tailwind, 2XU, and All Day Running. Follow Harvey on social media by looking up Harvey Lewis Ultrarunner on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. You can find the documentary "Like Harvey, Like Son" on Amazon Prime Video. Also, if you are interested in checking out his travel running company, check out Run Quest Travel.
Join me as I chat with super nice human and incredible ultra-runner Harvey Lewis. He was such a joy to talk to always trying to flip the conversation to hear my story instead of share his. What a nice guy! Harvey's record speaks for itself with wins at Big's Backyard, Badwater, and many other ultra races. He has run Barkleys twice, (no wins there yet :) ) and seems to be quite proficient on roads and trails, which is rare. Harvey is living his best life; he is full of enthusiasm and joy. We talk about living and training in Cincinnati and running to and from work. Harvey talks about being competitive for more than 25 years and self-care. We also talk about some of Harvey's biggest races including the Barkley Marathons and Badwater. Harvey is a wonderful role model and is a true example of when you put good out there good comes back to you. IG- @harveylewisultrarunner http://www.runquesttravel.com/home/
This is a jam-packed episode and I am stoked to chat with Samuel Hartman. Samuel is a race director for some of the most challenging and hilly races in Ohio. It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
Today we explore health, fitness, longevity & the pursuit of meaning through the lived experience of a human who has been walking planet Earth for a full 100 years.Meet centenarian Mike Fremont, a retired engineer turned climate activist and life-long athlete who holds a slew of impressive age group world records in running, including the fastest recorded marathons for an 88-year-old, 90-year-old, and a 91-year-old.I was introduced to Mike by his running buddy elite ultra-marathoner and popular friend of the pod Harvey Lewis, who helped arrange today's unique opportunity to learn and be inspired by someone who has not only been alive for so long but who has remained incredibly vibrant well beyond social expectations. For those of you who feel like it's too late or you've missed the boat on being an athlete, this guy's marathon career didn't even kick into high gear until his 60's—40 years ago! This conversation is my attempt to extract his testimony and counsel for younger generations. We dive into what he has learned about life, longevity, vitality, purpose, fitness, and setting and world records. We also discuss the WFPB diet (which he adopted 30 years ago in the wake of a colon cancer diagnosis) that fuels his training, keeps him spry, informs his climate activism, and in his words, is what has allowed him to thrive for decades beyond social expectations. It's not often you get the opportunity to spend time with a centenarian. This is a small attempt to course correct mainstream culture's failure to appropriately appreciate our elders. I loved having Mike on the show, consider him a new friend, and I'm proud to share his voice with you.Watch: YouTube.Read: Show notes.Today's Sponsors:Athletic Greens: 75 whole food sourced ingredients designed to optimize 5 key areas of health. For me, the transition to eating plant-based wasn't a hard choice. As opposed to some athletes who do it for performance-related reasons, I've become increasingly fed up with the food industry, particularly factory farming. Without going into a long diatribe here, we kill billions of living, breathing, intelligent animals, funded to a large extent by the government – through industry promoters who lobby for subsidies like the Beef Council, the Poultry Council, the Pork Council, the Dairy Council, etc. – that has then exacerbated health issues like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other morbidities that were magnified during the pandemic. And then the government has to lay out larger sums of money to help people to afford the health care they need to fight these ailments. Then we have a planet that is inching onto the edge of not being able to feed itself as there is less farmland and more crop failures as climate change worsens, which the factory farming industry contributes increasingly to that problem, all while the world population grows and grows and there are more mouths to feed. Without depressing you further, it seemed like a logical choice for me to spare the lives of a few animals, which won't change the world, but maybe it will totally change it for just a few of them who don't get slaughtered. Funny thing is, after many years of injuries and way too many surgeries, I do seem to be training better than I have in a long time. Not sure if there's a connection, but I'm sticking with this lifestyle. My doctor has even pointed out better health metrics during my past couple of physicals. I can also see this impressive starter list of vegan athletes whose names you likely know, like Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul in the NBA, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, incredible ultrarunners like Scott Jurek, Robbie Balenger, and Harvey Lewis, nine-time Olympic track medalist Carl Lewis, MMA star Ronda Rousey, and tennis great Venus Williams. My challenge has been that I was raised like most guys knowing how to artfully use a grill to cook. In Colorado, we barbeque outdoors in almost any weather. In our shorts. But my propane tank is lasting a lot longer now, and frankly, my biggest struggle is finding enough variety in what I eat. I love salads, but I'm not up for them every day. Enter Kathy Davis. She has a site called VegInspired that offers a ton of recipes and information geared toward aspiring and existing plant-based eaters. What's great is how Kathy breaks through the barriers and makes it so easy to really make plant-based eating your lifestyle. She's so committed that she and her husband sold their house and travel the country in an RV on something of a plant-based eating road trip, showing how doable it is even on the road. Kathy particularly emphasizes eating whole, unprocessed foods after encountering an interesting twist at the start of her journey. Despite eating plant-based, she gained dozens of pounds because she was eating what David always called vegan junk food. You commonly see them now: Beyond and Impossible Burgers, fake chicken nuggets, fake deli meats, even fake bacon. But these are often highly-processed, sometimes with high amounts of sodium, sugar, and other questionable additives. I'm not saying they're all bad, and I think most are still better than eating animal products, but I'd still point you toward more whole, unprocessed foods like Kathy does. You can join her journey with the coaching she offers, through her Website recipes and blogs, and with the free meal planner she is giving to WASP listeners, which frankly is a Godsend for someone like me to save me from eating salads every day. She's really engaging, so I hope you enjoy this conversation and gain some tips that help you live healthier, and please take advantage of her terrific meal planner.Meal planner:www.VegInspired.com/podcastKathy Daviswww.VegInspired.comFacebook and YouTube VegInspired
