Maribeth Ditmars has suffered plenty of heartache and loss for the past 25 years, beginning with the diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 1997 and the subsequent passing of her son Christopher at the age of 14 in 2001. This was followed by the passing of her younger son Jarrod when he was 21 years old from an accident on July 4th of 2015, which left him unconscious for the last 4 days of his life. In between those years, Maribeth successfully battled her own demons with her dependence on alcohol, to the point where she has been able to counsel many people who have had similar problems and she is now very involved in helping others. Maribeth has now been sober for 22 years .

Why is it that the harder you push for change, the more your teen seems to dig in their heels? If you've ever found yourself repeating the same conversations, giving advice that goes nowhere, or feeling exhausted by your teen's resistance, you're not alone. Most parents assume that if their child would just understand the consequences of their choices, they'd make better decisions. But change rarely works that way.In this episode, I sit down with therapist Jarrod Hoffman to explore what motivational interviewing can teach parents about helping teens change behavior. We unpack why lectures, advice, and persuasion often backfire, and why empathy, curiosity, and connection are far more powerful tools for creating lasting change.Jarrod introduces the stages of change framework and explains how understanding where your teen is in the change process can completely transform the way you communicate with them. Instead of trying to force change before they're ready, you'll learn how to meet them where they are and create the kind of conversations that actually help them move forward. Most importantly, we discuss why your relationship with your teen cannot be based on whether they change, and why investing in connection may be the most effective way to support growth over the long term.In this episode on helping teens change behavior, we discuss:Why parents often become counterproductive when trying to help their teen changeThe stages of change and how to recognize where your teen is in the processWhat pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance look like in real lifeWhy advice, lectures, and persuasion often create more resistanceHow motivational interviewing can help parents support change more effectivelyThe difference between self-serving questions and curiosity-driven conversationsWhy empathy is often more powerful than informationPractical phrases parents can use to create connection instead of defensivenessHow to reduce power struggles and improve healthy communication with your teenLooking for support?
This week on Panel Chewing Pick of the Week #134, Steve and Jarrod dive into a lighter comic week packed with interesting discussions and unexpected surprises. Before getting into the week's books, they take a look at DC's Absolute Universe and discuss whether the experiment has been a success, which titles have stood out, and why Absolute Superman continues to exceed expectations. The comics discussion includes thoughts on Astral Quantum #5, Absolute Green Arrow #1, Only the Savage Are Left #1, American Caper #7, Rook: Exodus #10, Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress #2, Powers 25, and Viking Moon #3. Along the way, they talk about dark humor, post-apocalyptic storytelling, fantasy adaptations, superhero reinventions, and the books that earned their Picks of the Week.In the second half of the show, the ongoing group read continues with Lone Wolf and Cub Volume 3. Steve and Jarrod explore the deeper themes emerging in the classic manga, including vengeance, morality, social class, samurai culture, and the complicated relationship between Ogami Itto and Daigoro. The discussion highlights how the series evolves from episodic adventures into a larger epic while examining the historical and cultural influences that make it such a landmark work.Whether you're following the read-along or looking for new comics to add to your pull list, there's plenty to chew on in this week's episode.

Jarrod Frankum started his real estate journey with nothing — no cash, no credit, and a $500-a-month budget he'd carried home from two years of campus ministry in Brazil. Seven years later, he owns six properties outright and holds an additional eight in partnership, runs a wholesaling and buy-and-hold business that funds his life across two continents, and attributes a significant part of his financial survival to implementing Profit First early and staying disciplined through multiple market cycles. This conversation tracks the full arc of Jarrod's story — from skateboarding through neighborhoods writing down addresses on his phone, to closing his first wholesale deal for just under $10K, to navigating the real market stress test of running a U.S. real estate business remotely from Brazil. Along the way, David and Jarrod dig into how Profit First helped Jarrod throttle income, take the emotion out of big deal closings, and build a financial cushion that carried him through the unexpected friction of running a business abroad. If you've ever closed a deal and wondered where the money went, or felt like you can't trust your bank account balance to tell you the truth, Jarrod's experience with multiple accounts, automatic distributions, and tax reserves will show you exactly what it looks like when the system does the thinking for you. This episode is for the real estate investor who is tired of operating in financial chaos and is ready to build something that actually holds up when the market gets cold.Episode Highlights[0:27] – Jarrod previews the Profit First mindset that helped him survive moving back to Brazil mid-business[1:17] – David introduces Jarrod and how they connected at a Nashville mastermind[1:54] – Jarrod's current exit strategies: wholesaling as the primary driver, buy-and-hold as the long-term play, and flips when the right deal comes along[3:16] – The Rich Dad Poor Dad moment that gave Jarrod goosebumps during an HVAC internship six months before graduating with a mechanical engineering degree[4:51] – Why Jarrod left America with almost nothing, did campus ministry in Brazil on $500 a month, and what that season taught him about contentment and grit[5:31] – How Jarrod found his first deal: skateboarding neighborhoods, hand-writing letters, buying stamps, and closing a $9,500 wholesale deal after three months[7:48] – What living with seven roommates in a no-AC house in South America taught him about fulfillment that had nothing to do with money[9:24] – The Gap and the Gain mindset: how Jarrod measures progress from where he started, not from where he wants to be[13:59] – Where Jarrod is today: six properties in his own entity, eight more in partnership, 0% interest deals, and a rental portfolio that funds his life in Brazil[17:18] – How Jarrod found Profit First in early 2020 and why his background managing 1099 income made the multiple-account framework immediately click[19:13] – The core problem Profit First solves: why a $10K balance can actually mean you have $87 to spend, and how multiple accounts eliminate that confusion[21:10] – How Jarrod uses Relay Bank to automate distributions on the 10th and 25th so the system runs without him touching it[23:16] – Why Profit First isn't just for good times: how it functions as stored grain for the winter when real estate cycles go cold[25:09] – How throttling income to twice-a-month distribution dates takes the emotion out of deal closings and prevents impulsive spending[28:02] – Jarrod's take on reinvesting more aggressively now: still paying himself, still funded on all accounts, but consciously directing more toward growth at 34[31:35] – Closing advice: the deal of a lifetime comes around once a month — stay consistent, stay faithful to what's working, and trust the systems5 Key TakeawaysContentment before cash flow is the foundation. Jarrod learned on $500 a month in Brazil that fulfillment isn't tied to income — and that mindset is what kept him from panicking when the business hit hard stretches. If you need a certain number in your account before you feel okay, the number will never be high enough.Getting started with almost nothing is an advantage if you treat it that way. Jarrod had no capital, no credit, and no connections — so he skateboarded neighborhoods, hand-wrote letters, and spent $300 on stamps before he had the money to spare. The lack of a safety net forced action, and that first $9,500 wholesale deal proved the model worked.Multiple accounts do the thinking so you don't have to. The reason Profit First works isn't just the percentages — it's that you never have to look at one number and guess what it means. When taxes, owner's pay, and operating expenses each have their own home, your bank balance finally tells the truth.Throttling income to set distribution dates removes the emotional trap of big deal closings. When a $10K wire hits and you have to wait until the 10th to access your share, the high has already worn off. You're on to the next deal, and the money goes exactly where it was always supposed to go.A financial system isn't just a good-times tool — it's what keeps you solvent when the market turns. Jarrod had to lean on his reserves when he moved back to Brazil and the business hit unexpected friction. The difference between weathering that season and going under was having stored grain before winter arrived.Links & ResourcesSimple CFO — https://www.simplecfo.comProfit First for Real Estate Investors by David Richter — available on AmazonJarrod Frankum on Facebook — @JarrodFrankumJarrod Frankum on Instagram — @JarrodFrankumClosing RemarkJarrod's story is a reminder that the investors who build something lasting aren't the ones who caught the best market — they're the ones who built systems before they needed them. If you're closing deals but still feel like the money disappears, it's time to get a system in place that protects what you're earning. In this Humanitarian AI Today Voices flashpod, Eric Talbert, Co-founder of MedCycle Network guest hosts an interview with Jarrod Goentzel, founder and director of the MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab in the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. This interview dives into the evolution and modern practices of the MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab for humanitarian professionals looking to optimize crisis response through system-level thinking and technology. The discussion traces the lab's journey from its origins during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to its needs-assessment work and market-resilience studies to it's general shift away from reactive, event-specific planning toward building structural, "system-level" understandings of supply chains and how organizations can better anticipate bottlenecks and coordinate with the private sector. For humanitarian professionals, the interview offers a grounded, pragmatic perspective on integrating artificial intelligence into crisis response. Goentzel explicitly addresses the limitations of relying solely on automated systems, noting that AI inherently struggles with data gaps, as it is bounded by what is publicly available and cannot easily synthesize entirely unique disaster contexts on its own. To overcome this, the MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab utilizes AI as an initial data-gathering and pattern-matching catalyst, which is then verified through a human-in-the-loop framework. The lab deploys a network of real-time ground-truthers who are trusted professionals embedded within the supply chain who validate the AI's outputs. This hybrid model ensures that automated data collection never compromises the absolute operational integrity required when delivering life-saving aid to vulnerable populations. The interview touches upon "polycentric governance," which is the concept of humans organically cooperating to manage common resources during crises. The lab models supply chains as complex adaptive systems and conducts "Blue Sky Studies”which are highly detailed structural mapping done when there is no active emergency to locate vulnerabilities before disaster strikes. A prime example of this is the lab's SCAN (Supply Chain Analysis Network) mapping, which evaluated infrastructural bottlenecks in transportation and fuel pipelines. Looking toward the future of humanitarian tech, the conversation highlights cutting-edge applications of predictive modeling and advanced AI training. For AI developers, Goentzel offer's a futuristic vision for disaster AI: rather than letting a machine application start from scratch during an active crisis, the lab is actively researching ways to pre-embed AI with complex supply chain network science and system dynamics. By providing the machine with a sophisticated baseline of structural interdependencies beforehand, the AI can immediately interpret real-time news and data influxes with extreme speed. This effectively frees up human humanitarian leaders to step away from the information onslaught and focus entirely on creating the rapid physical and collaborative connections needed to save lives. The MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab offers resources and educational platforms to connect researchers, technology experts, and ground-level aid workers. Goentzel invites listeners to join the lab's humanitarian supply chain community and take advantage of free online course developed by the lab, like the lab's free Humanitarian Logistics course through MITx: https://www.edx.org/learn/business-administration/massachusetts-institute-of-technology-humanitarian-logistics An article on the Lab's supply chain resilience work can be found here: https://ctl.mit.edu/sites/default/files/documents/scmr-innovation-strategies-september-2025.pdf To learn more about Eric Talbert's work and the MedCycle Network, check out his interview on the Grow Healthy, Help People Podcast: https://youtu.be/w495cOVVajw?si=EMZLr-zZXAWM93Oq

After a short break, Panel Chewing is back—and we've got a stacked episode to make up for lost time. This week, we're diving into a massive haul of comics, breaking down everything we've been reading lately, from standout hits to a few disappointing misses. We kick things off with Absolute Superman #19, discussing its balance of spectacle and character development, before moving into the surreal and visually stunning Absolute Martian Manhunter #11. From there, we hit some mixed territory with Absolute Batman #20 and a few titles that didn't quite stick the landing. On the flip side, there are some real highlights—Astro Quantum #4 continues to impress (with a realization that changes how we see the entire story), while Terror Bites #6 ramps up its overarching narrative in a big way.We also talk new releases, surprising reads, and a few books that completely fell off the rails. And of course, we wrap things up with Jarrod's Pick of the Week: Sacrificers #21—a powerful and visually stunning finale to an epic fantasy series. Finally, we introduce our new group read: Lone Wolf and Cub Volume 1, available free on Libby and Hoopla. If you've ever wanted to jump into a classic manga, now's the perfect time to read along with us.

The Three's Company apartment lease is up and it's time to move out and move on in the only way we know how - with an Arcade Obscura on underrated or obscure three-player arcade games! The first pick is so undefineable that Jarrod had to create a new word for the genre. The next pick gives us gore and bad line deliveries to go with our beat 'em up. The last pick takes a famous character, gives them two new friends, and has you do things with them that have never been tried again. We also talk about the recent UFO dump, the new Mortal Kombat 2 movie, and answer what things from the arcade hobby scene would we like to transfer to our real jobs. In Luke 23, Jesus does the unthinkable. While suffering on the cross, He forgives the very people who mocked, rejected, and crucified Him. His followers watched Him live out everything He had ever taught about mercy, love, and forgiveness—even in His final moments. The same invitation is in front of you.Sometimes the biggest breakthrough in your faith is not learning more about Jesus, but finally taking a step to follow Him. Admiring Him from a distance may inspire you, but following Him changes your life from the inside out. You'll discover:Why so many people stop at admiration instead of obedienceHow Jesus proved He is worth following through the crossWhat it means to move from inspiration to actionWhy following Jesus starts with small, practical stepsHow obedience unlocks peace, trust, and transformationThis message is for anyone who has been circling faith, wrestling with doubts, attending church without engagement, or feeling stuck between belief and surrender. What if the life you admire in Jesus only becomes real when you begin to follow Him? The step you've been avoiding may be the very place where His peace, strength, and presence become personal.
