I met Amanda Lewis in a meditation class with my coaching and podcast guest Kerri Twigg. Amanda edited Kerri's book as well as Leslie Ehm's book. I'm fascinated with network science and how people come to know one another. When I found out Amanda was publishing her own book, Tracking Giants, I knew I wanted to talk to her about the process of writing a book as an editor, the practices that support her creative process and her West Coast remote working lifestyle. This conversation was a lot of fun - if you've never heard my loud laugh you will:) I realized right at the end that Amanda's publishing date is personally relevant to me as well - I get to sprinkle my mom's magic and send beautiful success vibes Amanda's way. About Tracking Giants - available for pre-order now A funny, deeply relatable book about one woman's quest to track some of the world's biggest trees. When she first moved back west after nearly a decade away, Amanda Lewis was an overachieving, burned-out book editor most familiar with trees as dead blocks of paper. A dedicated “indoorswoman,” she could barely tell a birch from a beech. But that didn't stop her from pledging to visit all of the biggest trees in British Columbia, a Canadian province known for its rugged terrain and gigantic trees. The “Champion” trees on Lewis's ambitious list ranged from mighty Western red-cedars to towering arbutus (madrone). They lived on remote islands and at the center of dense forests. The only problem? Well, there were many… Climate change and a pandemic aside, Lewis's lack of wilderness experience, the upsetting reality of old-growth logging, the ever-changing nature of trees, and the pressures of her one-year timeframe complicated her quest. Burned out again—and realizing that her “checklist” approach to life might be the problem—Lewis reframed her search for trees to something humbler and more meaningful: getting to know forests in an interconnected way. Weaving in insights from writers and artists, Lewis uncovers what we're really after when we pursue the big things—revealing that sometimes it's the smaller joys, the mindsets we have, and the companions we're with that make us feel more connected to the natural world.

What do you do when your greatest source of accomplishment, joy and belonging also becomes the greatest source of personal suffering? Theo Fleury is our guest who shares his journey on becoming one of NHLs greatest players, while living with a dark secret of sexual abuse. He shares how he overcame alcoholism through redemption and focused his pain, experiences and wisdom into helping others. His story documented in the book PLAYING WITH FIRE is a raw and honest telling of his abuse and healing. The last three years of government overreach started to trigger feelings of his past oppression and we talk about the similarities and recognition of abuse/ power/ fear in manipulating minds and actions of entire populations. Tim held it together and didn't fan boy out too much on this interview… May however found the similarities in past trauma and redemption to hit a nerve of empathic emotion… this one you won't want to miss! About Theo Fleury: Theoren "Theo" Fleury (born June 29, 1968) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, author, and motivational speaker.[1] Fleury played for the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, and Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL), Tappara of Finland's SM-liiga, and the Belfast Giants of the UK's Elite Ice Hockey League. He was drafted by the Flames in the 8th round, 166th overall, at the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, and played over 1,000 games in the NHL between 1989 and 2003. One of the smallest players of his generation, Fleury played a physical style that often led to altercations. During his career Fleury recorded 90+ points four times, and 100+ points twice.[2] He twice represented Canada at the Winter Olympics, winning a gold medal in 2002. Throughout his career, he battled drug and alcohol addictions that ultimately forced him out of the NHL in 2003. He retired in 2009. Links! IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™… you'll learn why many professional athletes, especially fighters, are some of the top biohackers in the world. They hack their bodies, minds, and environments to achieve an incredibly high level of performance. Every hack they do has to be effective—and means the difference between winning and losing. Professional MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter Miesha Tate knows and does just that while adding being a parent and entrepreneur into the mix. Miesha is a former UFC and Strikeforce Bantamweight champion, ONE Championship vice president, and winner of Celebrity Big Brother Season 3. She always draws on her experiences, whether from home birth or competing on the world's biggest stages as a pro athlete as proof that when the mind and body are functioning with synchronicity, you are capable of great things. After more than a decade of wrestling and MMA competition culminating in her UFC World Championship in 2016, she stepped out of the octagon. “I retired from the sport and it took five years to figure out who I am other than Miesha Tate, the fighter,” she says. “So not only did I go soul searching, but I also went wellness searching.”She found red light to help her recovery and healing, hyperbaric oxygen therapy to restore and protect her brain, and breathing techniques to keep her present and grounded. She learned, too, the importance of mindfulness and attention to self—“to just be alone with your own thoughts.” She says there's reward and fulfillment in doing something every day that pushes you and makes you a little bit uncomfortable. No pain required. She came back to professional MMA fighting after having two children and changed up nearly everything about her training. This included moving from Bantamweight to Flyweight, which meant reducing her already lean frame by another 10 pounds. She now looks at her body and mind as a comprehensive unit: the big things like hormones, nutrition, sleep and brain health; flow state during her fights; and she even takes on the more elusive soul work. Miesha focuses on empowering women through martial arts, with a particular emphasis on self-defense and building confidence. She's become an advocate for women in combat sports, using her platform to promote equality and opportunities for women in the sport. She also helps others heal, recover, and discover their potential at Desert Moon Wellness, which she co-founded with two women partners. She lists her three most important things in life as: 1) Family and friends, 2) time, and 3) goals and dreams.Watch this episode on YouTube! All the links and resources are available in the show notes.WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Imagine a time when your ability to get a raise was not based on merit, but on whether your importance to your family merited it. That's what Heather Flynn faced early in her career, as did countless other women who did the same work as their male counterparts but were told they would be paid less money since they weren't the head of the household. Giving yourself permission to prioritize your well-being and success This week we continued our thought-provoking and informative discussions around books. I had the pleasure of talking with Allyson Byrd, who is a long-time friend and colleague of mine, and an all around unapologetic and fascinating individual. She shares her unique perspective on how reading can maximize its impact in your life and magnify your intentions. In this conversation, Allyson spoke about the importance of self-care but also highlighted what happens when you stop focusing on it. We often get caught up in our daily routine and forget to care for ourselves. Allyson believes that self-care is crucial to create success for yourself, and it starts with permitting yourself to prioritize your well-being. Allyson shares some pretty interesting information as the topic moves to the new world of plant medicine, where Allyson shares her practice of microdosing on psilocybin while reading, and why she does this. And in true Allyson style, none of her books are conventional, and one hasn't even been released yet, but she managed to snag an advanced copy, and I won't lie, I am jealous of this one. If you are ready to be reminded of the power of books and how they can shape your perspectives and open your mind to new possibilities, then you don't want to miss this episode. What's in this episode Why Allyson Byrd Reads What happens when you stop focusing on self-care Creating success for yourself Working less and living more The power of psilocybin The fight against fear Practicality to our imagination Not hiding behind worry Visit lisalarter.com/e101 for all resources from this episode.

This episode is a great Q & A on how to improve your starts off the block with some very basic information, and some lesser discussed deep dives on the topic to give you an advantage in your next race. Multiple tips for how to improve your pool starts and when to go to the blockWhen the heat before yours finishes, you will hear three short whistles, and then one long whistle. The long whistle indicates that you can step onto the block.Once you are on the block, curl your toes around the front edge, and when they say "swimmers take your mark", lean forward. For Masters you don't have to start on the top of the block; you can start on the edge of the pool or even in the pool. Some pools have a starting wedge behind the block, which is similar to what is used in track and field. When starting, swimmers want to push off with their feet and extend their arms to create momentum. The goal of a good pool start is to have a long and fast glide underwater, which saves time. It's recommended to practice starting with a coach or experienced swimmer, and filming yourself to see what you can improve.Experts suggests doing dryland exercises to improve your strength and explosiveness off the block, such as box jumps, squats, and lunges. They discuss how the start is the low-hanging fruit for improving swim times.Getting a good start is important because it sets the momentum for the race.Swimmers should aim for a streamlined entry into the water to reduce drag and cut off seconds from their time. The best way to improve starts is to practice regularly, and even doing one start after each practice can lead to significant improvements. The minimum starting depth for any start is five feet eight inches of water to prevent injury. We touch on the issue of goggles falling off during races, and the best advice is to get them off as soon as possible if they become a hindrance. Oregonian Taylor Spike added his name to the very short list of ultra-endurance athletes to complete a sub-60 hour, 200 mile ultramarathon. For Taylor, running is about life — and life is about submitting to the friction necessary to get uncomfortable. Comfort is hiding after a lousy day at work to bust into a case of beer. Comfortable is overweight. Comfortable is Dilaudid, a buzz and a couch. There was a time in Taylor's life when he went through the motions of addiction to cope. "I didn't have a pill problem, I had a pain problem". Back surgeries and a gut left him uninspired and lethargic. In the suffering of the long run, he finds his family and his truth. “I was quick to look for the easy out,” according to Taylor, who at the time was trapped in the spiral of routine, but which ultimately spun into a self-destructive path chasing numbness and a false high. When a second surgery was required for his back, he was already walking down that road. Alone. When the second round of therapy and pain management was heaped on his plate, Taylor expected help and accountability. He hoped again to skate through riding the easy out. Life was not gritty, raw, or real. What he found instead was a heavy dose of self-accountability and a hard look in the mirror. No one offered to do the heavy lifting for him, and he realized that no one could alter the map of his life besides himself. There are prisons we lock ourselves in that we hold the only key to. “We all go through life avoiding confrontation,” he says. Even conflict within ourselves. Listen to this podcast with Coach Blu and Taylor. See if you can relate to anything said here, and make sure to share the word with others! We can all recover. "I am a CHAMPION!"
