Episode #1109 Celebrating 20 or so years of Winnipeg's Park Theatre with highlights and memories of some of the many great shows that I've seen there, and a few that I regret missing. I've even got an hour of exclusive live recordings from shows I've attended over the years. Thanks to Erick Casselman and his staff for more than 20 years of being a leader in our music and arts communities! The Park is a privately owned venue that continually improves the experience for performers, attendees, and our city in general. It's really remarkable how much the venue has improved and contributed over the years. I look forward to many, many more great things to come at the Park, and their new sister venue, Sidestage, which has quickly become one of my favourite places to see a show! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-hnN

Disclaimer: This show isn't for everyone. It's a raw and emotional reaction to finding out that a dear friend is no longer with us. It's unlike any episode I would generally put out, but important enough to be honest and real about. Listener discretion is advised. John Prentice was a longtime volunteer at UMFM, hosting Planet Mainstage for many years, and Folkus and The World Beat Show prior to that. He's been active in the film and television industries and has lent his passion and support to just about every arts and culture endeavour in town. He was a volunteer at the Winnipeg Folk Festival for most of its 50 years and a regular supporter and attendee of other festivals. John was also a dear friend and someone I respected, admired, and looked up to for around 35 years. Every song played on this episode was pulled from his playlists between 2005 and 2010. I'll continue going through those and put together a proper tribute later, but this was important enough to do in the moment, despite how difficult it was. Great thanks to Nicole for helping me get through. Love and condolences go out to John's wife Lynn, his family, and countless friends. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-hlH

Episode #1103 I've been spending some time visiting the hospital this week, so we've got some extra appreciation for excellent nurses, paramedics, and doctors, and we heard some songs in honour of them and the people they help, including some folks who are mighty important around here. We also looked forward to the 20th anniversary of a venue that's mighty important around here and one of our oldest musical friends, and talked about yet another important friend and colleague who's gearing up to make an eagerly awaited new record. We slipped in some new music and some old classics as well. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-h7w

Episode #1102 Songs from the lounge, new music aplenty, and we head back to 1995 for more great songs that didn't fit into last week's 30th anniversary spectacular. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-h5d

Episode #1101 Skydiggers have been celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark album Road Radio, which is an all-time favourite for me. They compiled a playlist of some other great releases from 1995, but I quickly realized that a bunch of my favourites were missing from their list so I started making my own. I had no idea how many albums that I adore today came out 30 years ago. I came up with so many possible inclusions that I couldn't possibly fit them into my 3 hour show, but I did my best and put together a pretty fun trip back in time to the year 1995! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-h21

Episode #1100 1100 episodes and still going strong, still playing great music that is underappreciated and underrepresented elsewhere. Sharing this great music never gets old, and it's a blessing to still be doing it. Today, some timely Toronto tunes, a bunch of beautiful new music, and we send some love and healing vibes to a true unsung hero of Canadian music, a real musicians' musician, John MacArthur Ellis (https://macparkpro.com/). We heard two hours of great music that Johnny has either written, produced, and/or played on, and there was still a whole pile that didn't make it to air! John has been battling cancer and a variety of other ailments that have made life very difficult, but haven't dimmed his optimism or love for life. If you want to know more or want to join so many others in helping his family during a time of great need, you can check out the details here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-john-get-through-his-bone-marrow-transplant playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-gWV

Episode #1099 Back in the studio after the amazing Trout Forest Music Festival, and although it's feeling a little dreary and like summer fun is winding down, we've got stories to tell, new music aplenty, memories of a sadly departed unsung hero, and much more! Episode #1098 New music, upcoming shows aplenty, and a special primer for our upcoming house concert with Jadea Kelly! Not only has Jadea made some great albums of her own, she's recorded a bunch of covers and appeared on albums and recordings alongside a wide variety of artists. We heard a whole bunch of Jadea's contributions. Episode #1096 Back live in the studio again after our trip to Germany for Static Roots Festival and we've got memories and highlights as well as local shows and a huge backlog of new music! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-gMh

Episode #1095 I take great pride in playing a lot of local music on this show and celebrating and supporting the local music community as much as I can, but I don't think I've ever devoted an entire episode to showing off the wide variety of great music being made by artists from Manitoba or by other artists who have come here to record. I realized quickly that there was no way to distill it to a "Best of" or a complete overview, so this is a personal sampling of some of the great music that I love that came from here or was recorded here. There's so much more to discover and enjoy, but I hope you get a sense of the talent and passion that comes from this place by listening to this show! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-gHk

Episode #1094 Shining a spotlight on a true Canadian music MVP, producer/singer/songwriter/guitar player/pedal steel wizard/all-around good guy, Dale Murray! Dale is well-known by musicians but tends to be out of the spotlight most of the time, spending much of his time and sharing his talent by making others shine. He's been a valuable contributor to a wide variety of bands and projects, and on today's show, we listen to as many and as much as we can fit into 3 hours, but still ended up leaving a LOT out! Episode #1093 Normally the weekend I'd roll out the annual Canada Day spectacular, but instead a freewheeling (or "freeballing," if you ask a gym teacher) episode featuring birthdays, new music, a full preview of this year's exciting and eagerly anticipated Static Roots Festival, and a bunch of great classics! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-gFR
