It's the final day of UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama and I managed to once again weasel myself in between Joe & Twisty on The Wee Hours and Cretin Rob on Cretin Radio for 3 hours of bangers for breakfast on Mudge in the Morning! It's our last official day to ask for your help before we go back to doing what we do without asking anything of you. If you feel like showing your support and encouragement, your donation, no matter how seemingly small, is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who donated and once again made Tell the Band to Go Home's pledge drive a smashing success! I really appreciate hearing from so many people. If you missed out, there's always time to get your name on the list: Pledge-O-Rama info: https://umfm.com/news/pledge-your-support-for-great-radio-in-winnipeg-2025 Incentive merchandise & prizes: https://umfm.com/donate/incentives Make a donation: https://umfm.com/donate playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-guh
In the latest episode of On Target, Mod Marty spins another sharp set of 60s soul, R&B, and garage gems. This week, he's also asking listeners to chip in during UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama to help keep independent radio alive. If you love the music, now's the time to show your support. Tune in, turn it up, and throw a few bucks their way. Oh hello out there, we're on the air! That's right, the fellas are in the booth this week for Pledge-O-Rama 2025, raising some funds for this great campus & community radio station that we air on each week! This year we'll play some hockey card wars with some vintage junk wax, and we feature the return of Talkin' Trivia with some very special guests — our Chicken pals Danny & Glen! If ya like the show, be sure to throw some dough our way — head to the UMFM website to make your donation today!
When I heard that my friend and mentor and UMFM mainstay for many years, John Prentice, was hoping to do his great show, Planet Mainstage, remotely this year, I knew I had to jump in and help out. John has been a part of the folk & roots music community longer than I've been alive, and certainly all of the time that I've been with UMFM, so it was an honour and a pleasure to be his board operator and help solicit some donations for UMFM's annual Pledge-O-Rama! Unlike commercial stations and other big community stations, we do not get paid to host our shows, so it truly is a labour of love. We also have no idea who is listening to our shows, so it's a real boost when we get opportunities like this, where we hear directly from listeners who appreciate what we do. I make my donation as a thanks to John's show every year, and I hope that many of you will do the same. Today, John played parts of some of his great interviews with the likes of Peter Yarrow, Stephen Fearing, Sam Baardman, and more. Episode #1085 It's time once again for UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama, the one week of the year where we ask for your help. In order to keep the station functioning the way we'd like and to make necessary improvements, we need an infusion of money that we hope you will be willing to help provide. More importantly for me, however, it's the one week where I get to learn some of the names of the people out there listening in. We truly have no idea who's listening or how many of you there are unless you let us know directly, and this is the best way to find out. Your donations, large or small, all show that what we do is important to you, and that means a whole lot. I adore putting together this show every week, and I'd gladly do it just for myself, but knowing that it means something to you is very rewarding and it helps motivate you to make the best show possible. As usual, the show includes a bunch of new music, memories of a truly great concert last night and we look ahead to a busy week of shows here and elsewhere. We also spin some classic Winnipeg music that doesn't get played anywhere other than on campus & community radio. We've also got a new interview with one of the greatest songwriters in Canada and one of my true heroes, Ron Hawkins, all about the new album from The Lowest of the Low, which is truly exciting. We've even got some tracks from the upcoming album to debut! Thanks for all of your support. If you didn't get a chance to donate during the show, Pledge-O-Rama is on all week and you could help us get to our station goal. Join me Friday morning from 6-9 am for Mudge in the Morning! Just in time for April Fool's Day, it's an encore episode of Mondo Hollywood that originally aired all the way back in 2013 live on UMFM 101.5 FM in Winnipeg.Music by Dudley Moore, Chevy Chase, Jackie Gleason, Flight of the Conchords and more!Set lists available at www.mondohollywood.ca
A special podcast exclusive deep dive into the recording career of Stephen Fearing! There's a power outage at the radio station this weekend, so no new episode will air on UMFM, however, I had some special plans this week because there are some exciting shows coming up, so I thought I'd put together some exclusive podcast episodes. Seeing Stephen Fearing at my first folk festival in 1993 was a monumental moment for me. I remember being blown away and amazed that I'd never seen him or even heard of him before. I realized that there was a world of great music that I had been missing out on, and it set me off on a path of musical discovery that continues to this day. I also vowed to some day be able to help others discover music like his, and eventually that vehicle became Tell the Band to Go Home. Stephen has been one of the most played artists on the show since the beginning, and I've been attending his shows ever since that first festival. On this special episode, we hear selections from throughout Stephen's solo career, as well as some covers, live performances, and collaborations, including his longstanding supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Episode #1080 Some new music and some new magic courtesy of Dagwood Radio (Wednesdays, 6-8 on UMFM), a local show to look forward to on the horizon, and a pile of great music and great memories I was lucky enough to experience at the wonderful Regina Folk Festival over the years. The festival recently announced that it would not be returning, as was hoped for this year. The festival existed for over 50 years and despite being a smaller festival in a smaller city, it was known for daring lineups, female-first programming, diversity, and memorable collaborations. I'm grateful for the good times I had there in 2004, 2005, and 2012, and today's show featured a lot of highlights from those festivals. 2012 photographs: https://tellthebandtogohome.com/sbfrrnew/regina-folk-festival-photos-collection/ Festival home page: https://reginafolkfestival.com/ playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-glE
Episode #1075 Good news to start in the form of new music and some exciting events, including the annual CKUW Fundrive, which is on now! We also have some sad news this week, as we've learned of the loss of a true UMFM icon, Lyle Skinner of Waxies Dargle. Lyle & his show were a mainstay on Sundays for over 25 years. Lyle was also a great friend, mentor, influence, and positive presence. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. In his honour and memory, I picked some of my favourites from his playlists over the years and presented just some of the amazing music with a Celtic edge to it that Lyle knew and loved. We'll try to always remember what Lyle always told us at the end of every show, "Peace and love never go out of style." https://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/chapellawn/obituaries/lyle-douglas-skinner/136897.html Support our friends at CKUW: https://ckuw.ca/donate playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-geS
Episode #1059 Pre-recorded just hours after I learned that we'd lost a valuable member of the Manitoba music community, multi-instrumentalist Don Zueff. Don is primarily known these days for his work with the mighty D. Rangers, but he's had a long career and lasting impact. He dropped by the UMFM studio in 2014 playing with Jay Aymar, so it seemed like a good idea to listen back to that one and play just a few highlights from Don's career. Following that, we preview an exciting upcoming local show, spin some new music, parlez some francais, and talk about the big JP Hoe show this weekend. Today's 4:00 feature focuses on another fabulous fiddle player, the outstanding Kendel Carson, who has been a mainstay in Canadian music for years. She'll be back in town next weekend alongside Adam Baldwin. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-fWA

Episode #1036 This week is UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama, where you have the opportunity to let us know that you're listening and that you appreciate what we do. Every pledge, large or small, helps the station and lets us know that what we're doing matters to you. You can find more details on our Music Angels page or make your donation directly to UMFM: https://umfm.com/donate/pledgeorama Joining us once again was the wonderful Keri Latimer, who called in to talk about the stellar new album from Leaf Rapids and to show her support for campus & community radio. Later in the show, and for a special bonus hour, I was joined by John Prentice, host of Planet Mainstage on UMFM. We wanted to express our love & gratitude for our dearly departed Gail Comfort of the Comfort Cafe, and to play an hour of music with a Celtic edge to it, in honour of longtime UMFM mainstay, Lyle Skinner & Waxies Dargle. Lyle has been a dedicated host on UMFM since the beginning, and recently decided to wrap up his show. We felt it only fitting to encourage some pledges in his name. Thanks Lyle! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-fB7

Recorded on Good Friday as the lads find themselves with a little time on their hands, this one's been christened in honour (!?!?) of Claude Lemieux — one of the greatest agitators to ever play the game, and agitator's a word that my grandma would've used to say a‑hole. He won 3 cups and the only friends he made along the way were probably his teammates… Then we talk about the Jets who are struggling to say the least — at the time of recording, they've lost 5 straight and need to right the plane soon, lest they slip into one of those wildcard spots. And finally we talk about all of the fans masquerading as empty seats around the league — it's clearly not just a problem north of the border. Plus great tunes from the latest rocketing up the UMFM charts!
Once upon a time in our fair city, a great radio station called CKIC-FM came on the airwaves to add college radio to our city, competing against the university stations UMFM from the University of Manitoba and CKUW from the University of Winnipeg. The amount of great music we all got exposed to pushed indie music hard. Oh yeah, and that guy Robert did, too. We all have our own Robert. The Wee Hours will return to UMFM 101.5 FM in a few weeks, but on this show we get a bit of a taste. @joechurchill howdoyoudorevue.tumblr.com www.ckuw.ca www.chmr.ca

From his time in Buffalo Springfield to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and his many solo projects, it's a solid line up of songs written by Winnipeg's own Neil Young compiled with the help of my brother Mel Stefaniuk. He's a life long Neil Young fan, who has appeared on the show for past UMFM's International Neil Young Day events and can be followed on social media at https://twitter.com/MelFreelance And if you have ever wondered what a rap song with Neil Young would sound like, you'll be in for a treat!Set lists available at www.mondohollywood.ca
Episode #920 Christmas may be officially done for another year, but there's been a lot going on the past few weeks, so we haven't heard many of our annual favourites, so today we pull out all the stops and play some of the essentials that we haven't gotten to and just can't go a year without hearing. We also ease out of the holiday season with some Christmas songs that... aren't, but you can get away with calling Christmas songs. Finally, in the tradition of holiday marathons of years gone by, we're stretching out and taking over The Love and Happiness Hour at 4 pm on UMFM and playing some of my favourite L&H H classic rock, guilt and shame-free, just for fun! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-evO

Amos the Kid is the stage moniker of Winnipeg's Amos Nadlersmith. Nadlersmith has long been an enigmatic curiosity of the Winnipeg scene. For a time, the prolific songwriter seems to be anywhere and everywhere; then, you couldn’t find him if you went looking. His presence on a stage has been solitary, charming, sly, and brilliant. When it was anything at all. When he was active, however, he made music that was “simple and beautiful” (Stylus Magazine). He was known for his uncluttered turn of phrase and haunting melodies; he had a way, as the best do, of making a voice and a guitar seem new again. All before his 24th birthday. Thus it puzzled audiences that after a half dozen years as the perennial underdog favourite, possessing a trove of unpolished gems, Amos the Kid had never released any music besides a few iPhone memos and a 2016 single that somehow felt half-baked. It wasn’t until 2019 that Nadlersmith finally decided to act. He enlisted friends from some of Winnipeg’s most established indie acts - Living Hour, Yes We Mystic, Palm Trees, and Merin - and created “Mountain View”, a lush and inventive re-imagining of a handful of his oldest songs. The EP was produced by Adam Fuhr (Yes We Mystic) and mastered by Cam Loeppky (The Weakerthans, Cannon Bros.). All pre-recorded music has been removed from this episode. The set list originally featured in this episode included: Amos the Kid “Mountain View“, “What Did You Do”, and “Pine Grove“ from Mountain View. For more local music, check out the Winnipeg Music Project website. Thank you to UMFM 101.5FM. Music by Will and Art from Collector Studio.
Tracy Bone-‘09 JUNO Award Nominee (Keeseekoowenin Ojibway Nation). Multi-Award Winning Country/Americana Songstress received “Songwriter Of The Year” wins for BOTH her debut album “No Lies” (’08) and her sophomore album “Woman Of Red” (2012) at the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards in Winnipeg, MB. She was honoured with a JUNO Award Nomination for her debut Album “No Lies” in 2009. The 2010 Vancouver Olympics Entertainer has been blessed to open for notable Country Artists such as George Canyon, Charlie Major & Terri Clark. Her 3rd studio Album “Keeps The Fire” is slated for an early 2020 release. All pre-recorded music has been removed from this episode. The set list originally featured in this episode included: Tracy Bone’s Single “Can’t Get Over You”, “Love n Drive" ft. Hellnback” and “Woman of Red” from Woman of Red. There’s something to be said for keeping it in the family…Three brothers, Dan, John and Matt Baron create the genetic make up of FIINN. With ear haunting melodies and clever rhythms, FIINN creates unique soundscapes, leaving audiences with an eerie sense of human synchronicity. All pre-recorded music has been removed from this episode. The set list originally featured in this episode included:FIINN “Big Roots“, “Du Bell Can“ and “Montreal“. We are back with a special eppy!Tom, Randy and Jared from UMFM go through the history of your Winnipeg Jets and put together their ultimate line-ups! Basically anyone that put on a Jets jersey in the WHA, Jets 1.0 or 2.0 qualifies for this team, except for maybe Shane Doan, but you’ll have to listen to find out why.A couple classic Winnipeg hockey songs to close out the show and hey, was that a new intro? (Also please excuse the hum that comes in an out at times, the old iphone connection to the old Pro Tools isn’t what one would call professional, it’s something that I refer to as MacGyver-ing)Send in your thoughts on who would be in your line-up oh and one more thing, keep your stick on the ice!
