Picking up where Samuel Johnson left off more than two centuries ago, Ray Robertson's Lives of the Poets (with Guitars): Thirteen Outsiders Who Changed Modern Music offers up an amplified gathering of thirteen portraits of rock & roll, blues, folk, and alt-country's most inimitable artists.Irreverent and riotous, Robertson explores the “greater or lesser heat” with which each musician shaped their genre while offering absorbing insight into their often tumultuous lives. Robertson includes essays on Gene Clark, Ronnie Lane, The Ramones, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Townes Van Zandt, Little Richard, Alan Wilson, Willie P. Bennett, Gram Parsons, Hound Dog Taylor, Paul Siebel, Willis Alan Ramsey, and John Hartford. In this episode, Robertson gives us the stories behind Gene Clark, Ronnie Lane, The Ramones, Little Richard, Gram Parsons, and John Hartford.Purchase a copy of Lives of the Poets (with Guitars): Thirteen Outsiders Who Changed Modern MusicEpisode PlaylistFollow Ray Robertson:FacebookInstagram---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe
Episode #911 Busy week as we hear some new music, celebrate the season with some Autumn songs, celebrate Willie P Bennett's 70th birthday, preview some live and streaming concerts, and we say goodbye to Wailin' Jonny Wong and Bloodshot Records, which appears to be winding down after 25+ years of incredible music! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-etG
Episode #876 It is Valentine's Day, and although that goofy greeting card holiday doesn't really excite me, it is also the time when we celebrate the life and music of the great Willie P Bennett, who died on February 15, 2008. This year there's a whole crop of great new cover versions that you can (and should) check out on YouTube, and we've got a few of my favourites on the show today as well as a bunch of great new music, German requests, and a tip of the hat to our friends at CKUW 95.9 fm, who are in the midst of their annual FunDrive. I support the cause every single year, and I hope that you will too! Go to ckuw.ca/donate to show your support! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-elp
Fly with your Shadow is an interview-based podcast featuring conversations about music, mental health, and the devastating effect that the COVID pandemic has had on all of it. You can find us on social media @flywithyourshadow and on our website, flywithyourshadow.com Colin Linden (www.colinlinden.com) has played guitar alongside Willie P Bennett, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, Bruce Cockburn, and countless others. He's also 1/3 of roots rockin' supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings (www.blackieandtherodeokings.com). Colin has also released 12 or so highly acclaimed albums of his own and is preparing for the release of a brand new album in 2021. He's also a highly sought after album producer. He co-produced John Bottomley's album Blackberry, which you heard a lot about on last week's show. John and especially that album greatly inspired me to create this show, so I wanted to know more about the making of the album from someone who had a big hand in making it as great as it is. music credits and more info: : flywithyourshadow.com/episode-3-colin-linden
Although they each have successful solo careers Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and road warrior Stephen Fearing together are Blackie and The Rodeo Kings. In 2020 the boys celebrate being together and making music for 25 years. How did they kick off 2020? Jan 4 they played The Ryman Theatre, home of The Grand Ol’ Opry. Stephen Fearing packed his bags and went touring his solo album The Unconquerable Past! Colin won a Grammy for Keb Mo’s Oklahoma, which Colin co-produced in his home studio in Nashville. Just days ago Tom Wilson gets a Juno nomination for Lee Harvey Osmond. And Blackie releases King of this Town . The coming tour may take the entire year! What started off in 1996 as a one off tribute album in celebration of the music of Willie P Bennett has evolved into 25 years of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Quite simply one of Canada’s finest bands. Ever!! Enjoy the stories!
Linda McRae is getting ready to release a great new solo recording "Going to the Well" (October 1). The new album actually came out of house concert put on by fellow singer-songwriter Deni Gauthier in St Thomas ON, who suggested that Linda might like to record a few tracks in his studio. What followed is a new stripped down recording that's really just Linda McRae singing with her guitar or banjo, alongside some great cameos from Gurf Morlix and Bill Kirchen on guitar and backing vocals, Deni Gauthier on guitar and duet vocal, and Shara Gustafson on backing vocals. The new album features solo versions of three Linda McRae songs from her 2015 "Shadow Trails" album, a new lovely Linda McRae and Kelly Kessler co-write, with a poignant political message, "Empty", and some wonderful covers including solo banjo versions of David Bowie's "Heroes" and "Ashes to Ashes", Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day", Bill Kirchen's "Man in the Bottom of the Well" and Willie P Bennett's "Caney Fork River". We caught up with Linda McRae at home in Nashville to chat about the new album. For more information about the music of Linda McRae and upcoming tour dates, visit https://lindamcrae.com. Music: Linda McRae "Ashes to Ashes", "Empty", "Man in the Bottom of the Well" and "Dimming of the Day" from "Going to the Well" (2019, 42 RPM).
Some music insiders offer behind-the-scenes glimpses of some of the biggest stars. Former manager Jake Gold tells how the Tragically Hip came to be. Tom and Thompson Wilson cover Willie P. Bennett with a live performance. 14 time Juno winner producer Gavin Brown with insight as to what some bands are like to record with. Buskers Josh Garbe and Chris Blachford cover the Eagles beautifully.
This week marks the return of Fred Eaglesmith, and the Breakout West festival and Western Canadian Music Awards, and there’s plenty in there to play, celebrate, and prepare for. Also, to balance out all that joy, some songs from a darker, lonelier place.

Today, a visit from one of this country’s hardest working musicians, Jay Aymar. He’s back in town for a show at Times Change(d) and he’s brought reinforcements in the form of Don Zeuff. Both came in to chat and play for us.

Today a chat with one of the greats, and one we’re excited to be welcoming back to town this week, Mary Gauthier. She’s headed in to reunite with her frequent backing band, Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller, as well as working on a book and awaiting the release of a new album. Lots to talk about. And following up on last week’s chat with Jaxon Haldane about The Willie P Bennett Legacy Project, we present our annual tribute to the late, great Willie P Bennett, who left this world on Feb. 15, 2008. I didn’t even know the guy, but I miss him terribly. There’s never a bad time to listen to a lot of his brilliant songs, but the anniversary of his death reminds me that I’ll do my best to never let the music be forgotten, and thankfully, folks like Jaxon are taking the cause to a whole new level.

We’re all about the big shows and one big new project today. Previews of some stellar upcoming events, and then a chat with Jaxon Haldane about The Willie P Bennett Legacy Project, which aims to protect and promote the amazing, but under-appreciated legacy of the late, great Willie P Bennett. This is truly a wonderful project, and one that I can’t endorse highly enough. Please check it out: www.willieplegacy.com

It’s ramblin’ old Bobby D’s 72nd birthday tomorrow, and what else could we do but pay tribute in a way that only we can (or dare to.) There’s some reverence and some ridiculousness, of course. We’ve also got some world class Winnipeg music that’s every bit as great as that old coot, and a couple from the Canadian Bob Dylan (only better)!

Today tributes to two Canadian legends who left us 5 years ago, Willie P Bennett and Jeff Healey. To bring up the mood, we have some music that’s fun for the whole family, some new stuff, and more!

Blackie’s back! Whenever Blackie & the Rodeo Kings roll through town, it’s cause for celebration, so much of today’s show is dedicated to that glorious occasion, including a chat with our old friend Stephen Fearing. That’s not the end of the special celebrations, as another old friend, James Murdoch, returns to town with Jay Sparrow, when Murdoch & Sparrow play Sunset Saloon this week. We chat with James and hear some of their great songs. And, as if that weren’t enough, we’ve got some exciting new releases.

A folk music miracle has occurred, as someone, somewhere found some new, unreleased live recordings of the late great Willie P Bennett, and managed to sneak some copies out into the world. We love folks like that, and it’s our great pleasure and duty to spin it for you, as well as some other Willie songs by other great people. We’ve also got a bit of a tribute to Steve Goodman, we’ve got tickets to giveaway and much more!

We’ve got lots of new music and lots of tasty cover versions today (and some that fall into both categories). The new Shane Nicholson album had me climbing through the Nicholson/Chambers family tree which sent us off in various directions. We also took a trip to Austin, TX to visit the KGSR Broadcasts archive, and paid tribute to John Prine, who returns to town in May, and Willie P Bennett, who left us four years ago this past week.

Continuing on with T-Bar’s LONG absence, we’re joined by a very special co-host tonight, as our old pal Ron from Lockport makes the trip down south to keep Mudge company and lighten things up. He even finally got to hear a song he’s been requesting for many years.

Some stellar all-time classics to start off today’s show, before we veer off to preview the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, including the Colin Linden shows on Saturday. And, we’ve done some weird things on this show in the past, but a hip-hop set? It’s finally happened, Mudge has lost it.

Today, it’s our Blue & True Valentine’s Day special! We start off in Blue Valentines mode, as we celebrate the great musical legacy of the late, great Willie P. Bennett, who left this world on Feb. 15, 2008. We sure do miss him, but luckily he left behind some amazing music. Sadly, his music is not available for purchase or download ANYWHERE, which is absolutely criminal, so it’s more important than ever that we keep his music on the radio. For our second hour, it’s some of what you might expect a sappy singer/songwriter show to do on Valentine’s Day Eve (as well as a few oddball selections, right Ron?). We delve into the huge category of Love Songs, and pull out some gems.

Mudge goes solo for this show. Looks like summer's coming to a close, so what we need is some great music to end off another good one, and keep us going into the fall, and that's exactly what you'll get on this episode!

It’s Valentine’s Day, and we here don’t take this goofy, made up, greeting card holiday too seriously, so we’re glad to play some of the dark & twisted love songs that we most enjoy. On a more serious note, tomorrow is the second anniversary of the death of the great Willie P. Bennett, and since you can’t buy his music anywhere (a crying shame!), we’ve got to do our best to get it out there and keep it heard. We’re glad to do so and we promise to never stop

Pre-recorded as I'm off at the Trout Forest Music Festival. The Fred Eaglesmith show rolls into town this week, and that means a heaping helping of Fred and of course a tribute to the late great Willie P Bennett. Then, we've got new music, old but interesting music, upcoming events, and more.

A look ahead at this week's shows, including Martin Sexton and the Weakerthans/Oh Susanna. And, as usual, some great new music, some great old music, and whatever else there is.

Another Valentines Day has come and gone, and I've got some sucking up to do, so a set of lovey dovey tunes to melt her heart. Some new & noteable songs from here and elsewhere followed. The bulk of the show was devoted to the first anniversary of the death of one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Willie P Bennett. Willie is one of the guiding lights of this show, so it's our duty to pay him some respect and play some of his songs as done by him and others, and hear some words from those most inspired by him.

A show I wish I never had to do. Yesterday, one of the true guiding lights of this show went out, as Canada's greatest songwriter of all time, Willie P Bennett died. His songs and spirit will live on forever, but it's sad to think that we'll never see him or hear from him again. In memory of him, two hours of memories and music from the man, including Willie originals, Willie covers, a song about Willie, songs featuring Willie, and Willie live. We heard from friends like Stephen Fearing, Scott Nolan, Colin Linden, and Willie's longtime boss, bandmate, and friend, Fred Eaglesmith. Rest in peace, great one.

Bob Dylan turns 66 on May 24 - we here at the Oasis couldn't let that pass without a few of his tunes. Healing thoughts and a set of his music to Willie P. Bennett, who's recovering from a recent heart attack. Stay well everybody and hope your spring's going well! Bonsoir et bonne chance..enjoy,val folkoasis@gmail.com
