Episode #1077 A bunch of new music to start, then we bid a fond farewell to our longtime friend and show favourite, Del Barber, who is wrapping up his "Last Kick at the Can" tour with two big hometown shows this week. I've seen Del a lot of times in a lot of places over the past 14 years. Whether solo or with a band, he's one of the great live performers, and his albums have all been mainstays on this show. If this truly is the end of his music career, we wish him well and look back at some magical moments and great achievements. Thanks for the music and the memories, Del! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-ghf

We offer these shows for free. If you think it's worthy of a small contribution, we sure would appreciate it. This is Episode 14 of Season 4 and it's a short one. Why? To be blunt and to speak in general terms, I'd say life and death are having their ways with us. I'm sorry to let you know that Jec lost her mother last month. As you might imagine, that's been pretty trying for her. I lost my mom just over a year ago. While our mother-daughter relationships were very different, we both owe it partly to our mothers for what we do now. Horses would not be so much of our lives or so much of our identity, if it weren't for our moms. That, I think makes the remembering and the grieving process a bit more in-your-face than it might be otherwise. They say there are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. You've probably heard of them. Here at the Best Horse Practices podcast, we are dealing with some of them, or maybe none of them, but with feelings that are related. Or mixtures of them. It's a process. And as one of my favorite singer-songwriters, Del Barber, would say: "there is no straight path." I think the holidays, the shorter days and longer nights can be challenging, too. It can be harder to get out and ride when it's 15 degrees and dark is just an hour away. A cup of hot cocoa or a glass of wine can seem like a much better idea. What are your challenges? How do you make the most of winter riding? What are some winter hacks you have for dealing with ice, snow, cold, and short days? We would love to hear from you! Also, I want to remind you about the mental health initiative that the Best Horse Practices Summit is developing. Thanks in part to a grant from the LOR Foundation, there will be a mental health forum called Buck the Trend taking place here in southwestern Colorado in mid-February, 2024. You can learn more about that here. and help us vote on the logo, too! This is a bit about Buck the Trend that I shared recently: Buck the Trend is a forum for working cowboys, trainers, farriers, clinicians and others in the horse community. It is a pilot project to address the mental health challenges specific to our community. It is founded on the idea that a small, peer-focused group, hosted in a safe, relaxed setting, and led by experienced mental health professionals, is an effective way to nurture conversations, build skills, and affect positive change. A little bit about the why and the how: Many of us have acknowledged that our work can be isolating and demanding and that there are cultural, logistical, economic, and social impediments to getting help and being well. Our mental health and wellness impact not just us, but those around us, including family, friends, coworkers, and, of course, the animals. Horses may be “therapeutic.” They can make us feel better. But they can't necessarily help us build skills to navigate interpersonal relationships and feel better about ourselves. The solution: This forum is focused on skill-building and elevating the mental health conversation in our community. It's an opportunity to focus on ourselves for a moment, so that we can enhance and improve what's around us (specifically, the well-being of those close to us, humans and non-humans alike, as well as the greater horse community). If you would like more information or would like to support Buck the Trend, please contact us. Thanks to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. A great addition or substitute for your hay or grass and way better than grain. We thank Sampson Moss and his business, Prairie Wind Hat Works for the generous sponsorship. Sampson makes hats from his place in Pincher Creek, Alberta, and is taking custom orders now. Hey, just a heads up that Jec and I have some great books for your Christmas shopping. Check out Jec's website and Cayuse Communications. Please consider supporting us with a few book buying clicks. That's it. Another episode in the can and out of the barn. Thanks for listening, y'all!
Del Barber is a songwriter from the Manitoba Parkland. Del and I talk farming, touring with Colter Wall and old horses.
Country artist and songwriter Del Barber recently released his latest album Almanac. He talks (13:25 mark) about meeting his wife at one of his shows, recording the reverb in a grain silo and using audio from farm machinery on an album, living on the farm, getting into music, his father's impact on Del's music, writing from experiences, what folks can expect on his latest album, how it differs from past albums, going on tour and more. Plus, Chad Watson talks (1:20 mark) about whether bourbon brands winning awards should matter to consumers. For more on Del, visit https://delbarber.com/ or find him on social media.Don't forget to check out the video on YouTube and our Facebook page. Plus, check out Neat & Mixed and the Hops & Spirits Kentucky podcast, all available at hopsspirits.com.
Three-time Juno Award nominee (the Canadian Grammy Awards) singer/songwriter Del Barber stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith & Geoff about his new album, Almanac, as well as... well, everything. When Del began writing the 12 songs comprising his eighth album, he adhered more than ever to a prairie aesthetic. Don't worry, we explain that. Almanac follows Barber's acclaimed 2021 album Stray Dogs: Collected BSides Vol. 1, made during the height of pandemic restrictions. Stray Dogs, which brought Barber to the end of one season, Almanac doggedly led him into the next. Keith & Geoff talk with Del about his entire body of work and his influences, and the maturation of his songwriting and performing. If you like music in any form, you'll like Del Barber. This week, Joe Ferronato is joined by Del Barber. Del is a Canadian musician who, when not on tour with his band or writing new songs, takes up farming and is an avid hunter. He spends as much time as he can in the outdoors which, in turn, inspires his music. The two talk hunting adventures, conservation, educating people on hunting and much more.
In this episode we're sitting down to chat with Canadian farmer and singer-songwriter Del Barber. Del's music has been nominated for countless awards and has received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone Magazine. In April 2023, Del released Almanac, his 8th studio album. When he's not touring or recording, Del is busy running his farm with his wife and kids––a massive 2000 acres of grain land as well as 250 pure bred cows. He raises and sells over 1,000 meat chickens per year and they yield a sustainable micro-farm with vegetables and flowers. We're going to talk with Del about how song writing is like storytelling, how he's able to balance his farm life with life on the road and we're going to hear songs from the new album! You can learn more about Del and order your copy of Almanac at www.delbarber.comBefore the interview, we recap some of the fun we had at the recent Mother Earth News Fair in Kansas. So, the next time you need any new strings, picks, microphones, recording gear, etc. make sure to use this link! If you are already into other Canadian artists like Corb Lund and Colter Wall, you'll probably want to add Del to the list of highly talented singer-songwriters from up north. But first, I'd be remis if I didn't remind you that the #1 way you can support our podcast and keep hearing interviews with these artists and songwriters is by becoming a patron at our Patreon Page and it's super easy to do. Just pick one of the 5 tier packages, starting at as little as $3.00 per month and we'll send you some free podcast swag. Currently, we've only got 8 patrons that have taken advantage of this, but I know there's a ton more listeners that would be glad to help, if they only knew how. Well, Patreon seems to be about the easiest avenue we've found for folks that want to support the show to do so. Go check out the link by clicking the “Support The Podcast” tab at thetroubadourpodcast.com. Finding out about the music of Del Barber was really like a breath of fresh air for me. Del is a “songwriter's songwriter” and one quickly understands why he gets compared to guys like John Prine and has been featured in Rolling Stone. He's a very down to earth dude that lives in rural Canada about 4 hours from an airport and when he's not writing songs on his farm, he's enjoying the quiet remoteness of the land. As you'll hear he's an introspective guy, as most songwriters are, for me it was kinda like talking to an ol buddy I hadn't seen in years. His new album, “Almanac” will come out on April 28th and he and his band are getting ready to hit the road to showcase the new tunes. The tour starts this coming Tuesday, April 4th and they'll be all over the provinces of Canada grinding it out until mid-May. And for you Texas listeners, Del will be at the Mucky Duck in Houston on May 26th. He'll be adding more stateside dates before long so make sure you check out his schedule at delbarber.com and pre-order your copy of “Almanac” while your there. Links for everything can be found in the show notes for this episode at thetroubadourpodcast.com So let's get into it! Here comes Episode #171 of The Troubadour and our visit with Canadian singer-songwriter, and potentially my new deer hunting buddy, Del Barber

Manitoba singer-songwriter Del Barber released a wonderful new album this year - the Americana flavoured "Easy Keeper". Four years in the making, this album really packs a punch. 11 great songs, that are at times deeply personal, and yet at others, quite celebratory. A renowned storyteller in song, Del Barber has produced five critically acclaimed albums and been nominated for JUNO Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, and Canadian Folk Music Awards. Easy Keeper was predominantly recorded in Manitoba, and produced by Del Barber with Grant Siemens (Corb Lund, Tom Russell), with Bill Western on pedal steel, Bernie Thiessen on bass and Ivan Burke on drums with Geoff Hilhorst (Leeroy Stagger, The Deep Dark Woods) on keys, and Jeremy Rusu (Rosie & The Riveters, Red Moon Road) on accordion. For more information about the music of Del Barber, visit https://delbarber.com. Music: Del Barber, "Dancing In The Living Room", "Louise" and "Easy Keeper" from "Easy Keeper" (2019, Acronym Records).
While nursing pretty nice hangovers from going to his show the night before, Andrew and Sean sit down with Del Barber and his steel/guitar player Ryan Funk at the Country-Country head quarters and chat about his music and just country music in general. Del has been a staple of the Canadian Country and Americana scene for years and recently Rolling Stone named his song "Everyday Life" one of the "10 Best Country Songs to Hear Now". (Go check it out!) It was a fun conversation, but please excuse the ice clinking around in their Caesars...they were necessary for everyone's functionality.
Tristan and Chase are joined in house by Del Barber. Del is well known by his music career as a country/folk singer originally from Winnipeg Manitoba. He is also a prolific fly fisherman and all round outdoorsman.
Manitoba singer-songwriter Del Barber joins us on Episode 468 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about his fabulous new Americana flavoured album “Easy Keeper”. Easy Keeper may be the best thing Del Barber has ever done, although we are talking about an artist who has already been nominated for two Junos. A fine album, from a performer at the top of his game and a great interview - we do hope you’ll stay with us to check it out. As usual, we wrap up the episode with some more of the latest new releases and this time we include great songs from Zachary Lucky, Ian & Sylvia, Don Brownrigg, Madison Galloway, Graham Lindsey, Caroline Spence, Susan Gibson and Lynne Hanson. Contact Von via linktr.ee/vonreviews and find Rachel on her socials via https://linktr.ee/rachel.cholst --- From The Sometimes Boys: Architect Love Letter started as a pretty, fingerpicked bluegrass figure one Labor Day evening during a jam session after a long day of BBQ and day drinking. When singer Sarah Mucho took it home, she envisioned a song about an architect building a perfect mate, which then transformed into an idea about building your best self. As she says, "There is a spiritual aspect with the tribal chanting or incantation in the choruses. Think the law of attraction concept...visualizing what you want in life while also taking action towards building it." The idea is that in building our perfect home, or self, we are also trying to achieve some lost experience of paradise - because that is what 'home' means in so many religious texts. So musically, the song progresses from an assertion of building the perfect home, with expected song structures of verse, chorus - even a gospel bridge - into dissolving away in that home - when achieved, the structures from which we 'sweat and bleed' pass away into a wash of psychedelic color, texture - pure joy at finding the release of building the perfect home.
Prairie singer-songwriter [Del Barber](http://delbarber.com/) is about to release a fantastic new album, [Easy Keeper](http://delbarber.com/album/1069833/easy-keeper), which is the culmination of a rollercoaster few years that saw him forced to kickstart his career from scratch after a decade of building it up. We talk about his descriptive, sincere storytelling, his new perspective on the music business, finding peace with his place in the world, and much, much more. This is only Del's [second appearance](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr300-del-barber-36693d03625dca/) on the podcast, but he's already one of my favourite guests in the podcast's long history.
