It's our first-ever Trans Canada Christmas - starring the Trans Canada Highwaymen. Steven Page - BNLadies and Steven Page Trio Moe Berg - Pursuit of Happiness Craig Northey - Odds and Steven Page Trio Chris Murphy - Sloan   They are great friends, each with his band and career. What they have in common is a sense of the music they grew up with and a welcome sense of humour.   These Christmas sessions began in the '70s at CBC Vancouver with Producer Susan Englebert: Shari Ulrich, Valdy, Terry Frewer, Roy Forbes, and several guests. 5-6 years of gathering around a series of microphones, playing Christmas songs and telling Christmas stories. Such fun. Sadly, we lost our friend Susan to cancer and the Christmas show to time itself. The concept returned at Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver in 2015 and we enjoyed three years of Christmas in the Round with Barney Bentall and his assorted friends. We've played all three years on past Christmas Stews.     Now comes CKUA's turn to host the same tradition. Each Highwayman brings a Christmas song and stories of past Christmas tales. 5 songs in total. Craig Northey's was co-written with Brent Butt of Corner Gas. Steven's is about cheese logs. Chris's is about kids coming home and Moe's is the Christmas Classic Mistletoe and Holly.  They finish with Do they know it's Christmas.   Thank you to Arianne, Duke, Jasmine, and Bren for their production skills in bringing this show to air. Amazing work. And to Corey Wood for his skills and friendship in the edit and graphic studio here on Vancouver Island.

Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. The Mulligan Stew Podcast  Guest is Devin Cuddy. (Devin Cuddy band) Son of Jim Cuddy and very definitely his own man. Jim has said, on this very podcast, that he offered to school Devin and son Sam on the fine art of songwriting and playing but the guys went their separate ways. Now, Jim says he's very impressed with their growth and creativity. They've been singing together for years but just casually at fundraising events. Devin talks about a maritime tour they just did. Devin has released his first new music in 5 years. The album is called Dear Jane – with a reference to Hotlips Houlihan on the Mash TV series. The album is a soulful mix of New Orleans, honky tonk, roots and Randy Newman. Devins originals are storytelling taken to another level. He's become his own storyteller. Devin is creating his place in Canada's music world, just like his Father. One of the great surprises is Devin's cover of Barney Bentall's hit Come Back to Me. Barney sings on the track. Barney, Jim and Devin have been friends a long time. Devin says he's been waiting to sing these songs for 5 years. Should be a great 2024 for The Devin Cuddy Band. Tracks are included in the podcast.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays All From  1974 to 1979 I was lucky enough to host Great Canadian Goldrush on CBC Radio  National. Every Christmas we had a Christmas Jam – in the studio. Produced by Susan Englebert. (with assistance from Claire Lawrence) Except for the mixed drinks, it was nothing fancy but it was an hour of heart-felt stories and songs. The artists included Roy Forbes and Shari Ulrich. When Goldrush left the air Christmas Jam disappeared UNTIL Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver came on air and again I had a studio to capture this magic. I talked to Shari, Roy, and Barney Bentall and they all signed on for a reconnect. We got 3 years of Christmas in the Round recorded and then Roundhouse went dark.   Keeping the tradition alive, this year we present Year 3 of Christmas in the Round  (2017)   The Lineup includes   Jim Byrnes Shari Ulrich Barney Bentall Bill Henderson (Chilliwack) Craig Northey   (Odds and Steven Page Trio) On percussion Geoff Hicks (Colin James, Barney, Cuddy, Byrnes, Northey etc) Rob Becker (guitar/vocals) Kirby Barber (guitar/vocals)   Roy Forbes was unavailable in Year 3 BUT I found him hiding in Year One He brings with him two songs and the slide guitar of Shaun Verreault from Wide Mouth Mason. And yes..he does tell the story and rolls out his Christmas Classic Mince Meat Tart

Something that wouldn't be so easily cancelled when things got chaotic, which was almost always. After much discussion, they landed on a band. Shelby played some campfire guitar and Jess grew up surrounded by music and musicians, although she carried a deep fear of performing. Laura had an unspoken dream to play the violin. A band seemed perfect. It couldn't be that hard, right?Ten years later, and Wild Honey is going strong. Aside from the band, Laura has earned her masters in counselling and opened her own thriving practice. Jess became a pilates instructor and opened a private studio called Free Rein Pilates, recently deciding to step away from instructing to focus on her cattle ranch. Shelby published a novel called Mountain Girl, and has completed two more which are waiting for publication. She was the editor-in-chief at Kootenay Living Magazine prior to the pandemic. In 2019 Wild Honey released their first album, Distant Skies. They are currently working on their second. They have faced moments on stage, back stage, and trying to get to the stage, that have almost broken them, but they have always chosen to continue. The vulnerability and raw fear of performing have humbled them to their cores, but after a good cry and a gin martini, they keep going. The early days of babies, breast pumps, and peeling kids off their legs to go play in bars are over. Now they share beautiful stages with talented musicians who inspire them. They write songs about their journey as women and mothers. They have stopped apologizing. Period. For wanting something for themselves and for failing at it long before they succeeded. For not being perfect. They're not sorry. They're grateful. They won't tell you it's easy, but they will tell you that you deserve to try. You deserve to try and to fail and not say sorry. Because that's life, and while you're lucky enough to be here, you might as well jump in with both feet.Wild Honey plays annually with Barney Bentall and the Cariboo Express, and have beenhonored to share a stage with great talents like The Odds, Leeroy Stagger, Ryland Moran, and many others. Back by popular demand! The great Barney Bentall returns to NSTS this week to talk about his new instrumental record called RanchWriters, a collaboration with his Spirit of the West pal Geoffrey Kelly.  There are hints of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake on the new record, and Barney and I discuss how the project came together, the details of how it was recorded on his ranch, and how it's a tribute to the memory to Spirit of the West's John Mann. Barney's skin vibrating songs are, of course, also included.

Whether on his own or with his band The Ladies & Gentlemen of the Rodeo, or hosting and performing in Barney Bentall's Cariboo Express, Matt Masters is always busy, even though it's been a decade since his last album, All Western Winners. He's honed a really fun show built around a classic country-honky-tonk sound. Offstage and behind the scenes, he's had a heck of a difficult time over the years, dealing with loss, dramatic health scares, and difficulties that would cause even the strongest to feel some anxiety and depression. It all culminated with him being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. In spite of all the hard times and the subsequent, devastating blow of the COVID pandemic, Matt Masters reinvented himself in admirable fashion, founding Curbside Concerts and building a new model of bringing live music right to people's homes and neighbourhoods, not only in Calgary, where he lives, but quickly expanding between Ontario and BC, with sights set on further national expansion, and even a move into Australia and beyond. As busy as he's been, Matt Masters finally found time to put out a new album, a collection of some of his favourite songs by other writers, called Everybody Loves a Winner, which was produced by Leeroy Stagger (my guest on episode #1). Music credits: "Walk a Mile in my Shoes," "Some Day Soon," and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" are from the new Matt Masters album, Everybody Loves a Winner. You can find it on iTunes HERE.   More information and episodes: https://flywithyourshadow.com

Adam provides a little context to the work that is still needed to ensure the district can compete to recruit and retain support staff. Both Nick and Adam went to the Barney Bentall & the Cariboo Express show at the Mary Winspear Centre. They discuss the quality of the music and the fundraising efforts. Over $45,000 was raised over three nights for the Saanich Peninsula Food Bank. In the 14 years the Cariboo Express has been doing the fundraising concerts they have raised over $2 million. Check out Matt Masters, Ridley Bent, Daniel Lapp, Dustin Bentall and Lorna Crozier. The conversation then turns to what a day, or week, is like in the legislature. Nick and Adam chat about question period and how partisan it is. In the end it's a long and winding conversation about the quality of our democracy and some ideas on how we can improve it. It is followed by a more brief discussion about the role of the Whip, how the BC Greens manage their workflow and keep everybody organized. This week the SENĆOŦEN word of the week is SĆÁÁNEW̱ (salmon). Adam and Nick also talk about the pronunciation of W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich). Barney Bentall is an incredible songwriter and a terrific man. It was a real pleasure hanging out with him, capped with an unplugged performance of a song of his I've loved since my teens, "Something To Live For". Talk about skin vibration.        Barney and I cover a lot of stuff - his four-night stand at Hugh's Room in Toronto as part of a Gordon Lightfoot tribute, the sabbatical he took from music to chase cows in minus 20 weather, Springsteen's Nebraska, the very first record he ever owned, Ron MacLean's Juno Cup mixtape, and the story behind his cover of the Hip's "Bobcaygeon" as a tribute to Gord. Don't miss this.        Bentall's playlist: Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue Gordon Lightfoot - Shadows Bruce Springsteen - The Rising Tom Petty – Free Falling The Band - King Harvest Has Surely Come KD Lang - Love Is Everything The Tragically Hip - Bobcaygeon

Carla checks in with Barney Bentall as he is releasing his newest album after a 5 year hiatus! " The Drifter & The Preacher is the great paradox of a nomadic homebody, and a musical tour de force that could prove to be truly defining for a musician, a songwriter, a friend, a father, a brother, a husband and a son… coming face-to-face with a life lived. Lead single "The Miner," which was co-written and features his son Dustin Bentall, will be immediately available as a download to fans who pre-order the album on iTunes. Barney Bentall hit the music scene as the lead man for Barney Bentall and The Legendary Hearts back in 1988, with his self-titled debut CD soaring to the top of the charts, reaching platinum status in Canada and establishing Bentall as a must-see as a concert draw. The last couple of years have seen Barney Bentall translate his tremendous ability and deep introspection into his 10th studio album, which is an ambitious effort accomplished by one of the greatest storytellers of our time. "This was written for my father-in-law. Bar none, one of the most interesting and intelligent people I have met,” says Bentall. “He taught me many valuable things and gave me the best friend I have. He died with his boots on at the age of ninety-three. I wrote this at my ranch shortly after on a star-studded night.” While plenty of musicians have told stories of their family, Bentall possesses the emotion and interpretive skills to reveal an eclectic range that few could muster, and no more so than in the first single, “The Miner.” Says Bentall, “My son Dustin is a travelling musician. ‘The Miner’ marks the first time we wrote a song together… It started out as a story about Dustin’s grandfather and as a continuation of ‘The Drifter‘. Songs often have a mind of their own and… ‘Life goes where it goes’. When the dust had settled, we ended up with a story loosely based on a good friend of ours. He, much like the two of us, is driving down the road less travelled.” The Drifter & The Preacher also features a collaboration with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo on "Won’t Change The World." Bentall says, “Sometimes a song is the only tool in the chest when you are trying to get back into someone’s favour. My good friend Jim Cuddy jumped in on this one. I swear, that boy gets behind an old tube microphone in a recording studio and puts on a clinic every time.” Inspiration set in not only from his family, but good friends, too. “The Ocean and You (A song for John Mann)” is a stirring song paying tribute to the Spirit Of The West singer. “Around the time we were forming the Legendary Hearts, we had this rustic studio in a millwork shop in the False Creek area in Vancouver. It was a sketchy part of town at the time, but heaven to us. Back in the day, that studio was our Clubhouse. We wrote and demoed ‘Something To Live For’ there, among many other songs. The founding members of Spirit Of The West -- Geoffrey Kelly and John Mann -- became lifelong friends of mine in the early ‘80s. We made their first record in that studio and had a wonderful party or two. Along with our partners/wives, it was an unforgettable and cherished circle. I wrote this song about John and his ongoing courageous fight with early onset Alzheimer’s. It is also about the equally courageous role of John’s partner Jill. God bless ya, Johnny.” Catch Barney Bentall live at the following Canadian tour stops: July 20 – Toronto, ON – Live on the Patio at Roy Thomson Hall July 21 - Mission, BC - Mission Folk Music Festival July 26 - 30 – Calgary, AB – Calgary Folk Music Festival August 4 – Minnedosa, MB – Rockin’ The Fields of Minnedosa Festival August 6 – Comox, BC – The Filberg Festival August 18 – Saskatoon, SK – Rock The River Festival August 19 – Wainwright, AB – Come By The Hills Music F --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlas-coffee-house/support
