Two-time Winter Olympic Games medalist Nico Porteous won't wear the silver fern again as the 23-year-old announced he was stepping out of competition. He isn't calling it a retirement but he is stepping away from competitive free-ski halfpipe eight months out from the next Winter Olympics. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Lisa Owen.

Today we were joined in studio by Nico Porteous our old mate who after a decade has decided to retire from Olympic level competition. We first met Nico when he was 14 years old.
Nico Porteous is walking away from competitive free skiing, retiring at age 23. The Kiwi Olympian has admitted his 2022 Olympic gold and 2018 bronze in the freeski halfpipe have contributed to his decision. He told Mike Hosking he set out with a number of goals when beginning his career at age 12, and he's now achieved those goals. “I feel as if the ‘more, more, more' mentality can often lead to doing damage or leaving a sour taste in your mouth,” Porteous said. “So I just wanted to call it.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Last week when Shaun Johnson was in the studio, we were discussing retirement. Not mine, but that's of growing fascination to me these days. When do you know? If you aren't getting cancelled, or run out of town, or falling apart, how do you know? John Key famously had nothing left in the tank. Johnson was explaining it was important for him to go out when he decided, not when he was dropped. The TV stuff he now does was something he was interested in, but didn't know how it would unfold. Johnson at 34 years old seemed young enough. I look at people like Tom Brady in his mid 40's. One more season, one more chance at greatness, and he goes out a hero with another Super Bowl win. I look at Aaron Rodgers, who has signed at Pittsburgh this year. He looks like he has gone a season too long. He looks like he is looking for work, when he should really be looking for life after football. Maybe this season will make a fool of me, but I doubt it. But all of that pales in comparison when it comes to Nico Porteous. He is walking away from his snow sports career at 23 years old. He doesn't want to use the word retirement, but equally he won't be at the Olympics anymore. As our most successful ever snow sport athlete, it is over. He also doesn't know what he is going to do, or what his future looks like. But he has enjoyed videos and production so maybe that's a path. How do you decide that at 23 years old? How do you know that it's right? Who advises you? How do you know they're right? Having spent your entire life aiming for the one big thing, sporting excellence, how do you pull the cord when you have, if you want, years to go? Are you one of those people who can walk away from that level of exhilaration and success and not look back? Is now knowing what's next part of the thrill? Will you keep the scrapbook of memories? Will you tell your kids or grandkids about the halfpipe? Will they ask how come Dad can do flips on skis when they first go to Cardrona? What a big call with so much ahead of him. Or was what he did plenty? Is that a good way to see life? I admire him. Is he reckless? Could be. Maybe he is an insightful genius. Either way, I admire him. At 23 years old I would have tortured myself, and probably still wouldn't have done what he has. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Freestyle skier Nico Porteous has decided to retire at the ripe old age of... 23? He's gonna keep skiing, but will not compete at any future Olympics. He spoke to Jason Pine on Sportstalk about why he's doing this - and what he'll be doing instead. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Dave catches up with Mike Porteous while connecting with the Praxeis team and disciple-makers in New Zealand. Mike is a seasoned missions and church leader who has embraced a Disciple-Making Movement (DMM) paradigm—both locally and as far afield as Zambia. He shares his journey, key insights, and encouragement to keep disciple-making simple and Spirit-led. Mike's Journey From a farming background, Mike had a powerful encounter with God at 21 that launched him into decades of mission work—from the Philippines in the '70s to serving with groups including YWAM since 1980. In the early 1990s, while on staff at what is now Gracecity Church, Mike's hunger for real and lasting mission impact grew. Introduced to DMM through others and inspired by David and Paul Watson's book Contagious Disciple Making, Mike knew this was a path he needed to pursue. What's Happening Now? Mike's DMM work has expanded into Zambia through a connection with a Sri Lankan man working there. Though 90% of Zambians are churchgoers, transformation was lacking. But through simple DBS tools, real change is taking root. Today, three DBS streams are multiplying, and Mike continues coaching leaders to sustain and grow the movement. Back in New Zealand Despite initial slow traction, Mike's persistence in starting DBS groups has led to surprising breakthroughs. One key moment came during a Sunday night training north of Auckland—attended by Sam Turner, who's now seeing movement among gang communities. Multiplication is happening, and Sam is running far beyond what he could do himself.* Key Shifts in Mike's Thinking Discovery over Teaching – Moving from telling to facilitating, Mike has learned to trust God to reveal His Word through others. Simple Tools for Equipping – He's passionate about helping people uncover their God-given purpose and equipping them with tools that multiply through simplicity. Challenges Prayer – Building prayer teams and rhythms that moves people from a place of conviction in prayer to seeing transformation. Leadership Development – Particularly in Zambia, where structure is needed for lasting depth in an over-evangelised context. Discernment – In New Zealand, Mike is asking: Who is the Spirit highlighting to invest in? Final Encouragement Mike reminds us of two things: “The key people are probably already in your orbit....We tend to complicate things. Keep it super simple.” *Hear more of the stories of God moving amongst gang members in the north of New Zealand at the end of this podcast.

Three Spartan alumni siblings – Dave Porteous, Bill Porteous, and Ruth Porteous Hamilton – had often thought of ways they could honor their parents, who had attended Michigan State College between 1937-1942. When the siblings learned of the project to renovate Campbell Hall into an Honors College living-learning community, they were immediately interested in helping to fund it because their parents – William and Mable Porteous – had met at Campbell Hall. Years later, the three siblings all followed their parents' footsteps to MSU. Now, together with their spouses and families, they have pledged $1 million to renovate the former cafeteria into what will be The Porteous Grand Hall. This new space will give future Honors College students a place to collaborate and build lasting connections, just like their parents did. (Brandi Stover & Melanie Brender) Dave, Bill, and Ruth talk about this cool Spartan story. Conversation Highlights: (1:01) - Talk about mom and dad in general and the impact they had on you. (4:13) - What motivated the gift? (7:31) – Why is it important to give back? Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

Today's episode covers the Ten Questions part of my conversation with Will Porteous. It's no surprise which album Will chose as his favourite, but our conversation about which song we'd give to someone who didn't know Tom's music saw us talking about a few deep cuts that don't often get a shout out on that question. If you want to check out Will's amazing podcast, The Limehouse Podcast, click here; https://soundcloud.com/user-434215118, If you want to check out his Tom Petty covers, you can find those here: https://soundcloud.com/even-the-losers and if you want to listen to some of Will's original music, which he describes as somewhere between The Ramones and Tom Petty, go check that out here! https://soundcloud.com/williamporteousPlease note that this episode does contain some profanity.Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Today's episode is a conversation I had with powerhouse multi-disciplinarian and resident of Diss, Will Porteous. As a quick warning, there's a bit of profanity in this episode, but when you get two Englishmen in a room (even virtual) the langauge will change on a dime! I've been looking forward to this chat for somewhere around two years now because Will has been a very generous supporter of the podcast and a super nice guy to chat with offline! I really hope you enjoy our conversation which took in plenty of Petty but also branched out into a whole bunch of different areas that we lots of fun to explore. If you want to check out Will's amazing podcast, The Limehouse Podcast, click here; https://soundcloud.com/user-434215118, If you want to check out his Tom Petty covers, you can find those here: https://soundcloud.com/even-the-losers and if you want to listen to some of Will's original music, which he describes as somewhere between The Ramones and Tom Petty, go check that out here! https://soundcloud.com/williamporteousPlease check out The Nextdoor's website here: https://nextdoorsmusic.com. You can find out his brilliant project The Title Trackers here: https://www.thetitletrackers.com and make sure you check out the fabulous "Awaken", which we talked a fair bit about during the episode: https://youtu.be/Crq3kY8jr4s and don't forget to go check all the social media places where you can find The Nextdoors. They're lovely people making really good music!NOTE: There is a very small amount of profanity in this episode but it is not gratuitous.Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods.
