Stephen Epley, host of Music Rewind, joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about Alan Parker's 1991 film, The Commitments. The film deserverdly racked up nominations at the BAFTAS, Golden Globes and the Oscars, but it's soundtrack is what really took off in the US and around the world. It went 2x Platinum in the US, 3x Platinum in the UK, and it was a huge hit in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. It was so successful that they released a 2nd soundtrack, The Commitments Vol. 2.The film follows a band of Irish teens that are put together to sing covers of American soul songs, "songs of the working class" claims manager, Jimmy Rabbit. This soundtrack was Stephen's gateway to soul music since in 1991, discovering music was not as simple as it is in 2024. We Discuss:Alan Parker's other rock and roll projects that made him the perfect director for this filmHow this movie launched Glen Hansard's journey of writing music for filmsHow authentic the music feels in the movie and why that isThe film's legacy even though there weren't any "breakout" stars from the filmFor more info about Music Rewind:Website: https://musicrewind.podbean.comTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/musicrewindInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/musicrewindFor bonus episodes like our end of year music episode, join the Soundtrack Your Life Patreon.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

Musicals are on the docket all November long but not every film is an adaptation and this one popped off as a movie before the stage show. An easy adaptation as you have two singing leads and only a handful of actors needed. While this modern musical had its pre-production ups and downs, this very budget tight Irish film that cost only $150k performed surprisingly well at the box office and received an award winning reputation. We're talking about the John Carney film from 2007 called “ONCE” with the leads being Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglova of the music group “Swell Season”. A passionate love story of a musician and an immigrant girl in Dublin who motivate each other but can their circumstance allow for them to be together? A story in which life came to imitate in a way and Angela, our MOVIEHUMPERS Gossip and celebrity reporter, spills all the tea with some ball scorching behind the scenes information that is sure to make you stay in your seat and calmly take in. Does ONCE rank among the musical film greats? What is the secret behind the scenes? Did he just tell her to “shut up”? Giiiiiirrrrrrrrlllllll…. And I'm so sorry i got the best of me I've really did been on such a violent spree Well maybe you can still make a man from me Here on Speyside Quay With what's left of me As you live and breath Really now know what took hold of mе The Chicken lyrics: The chicken wakes up like she does every morning To the sounds of her husband's scream Sat in the dark on the eggs she is warming She closes her eyes and dreams of Walking to Memphis, becoming a dentist Anything but this I mean, she likes her life as a mother and wife But is that all she is? She stares out the window The very next morning, the chicken decides to Make her escape, get a taste of freedom She runs out the coop that her life's been confined to Suddenly sees the thing she's only dreamed of Just up ahead, gophers run through a meadow Deer graze, birds sing Her future is waiting, right there for the taking There's just one thing The chicken must first cross the road The road A sea of trees and green and moss Waiting just across the road, the road A life of brighter days, a width of road away The road is gigantic, the chicken is little She moves ahead left-right-left, right-left-right All of a sudden, she stops in the middle Frozen in place by a pair of headlights It's anyone's guess what then happened next But most think she died But I think we ought to believe that she got to The other side So that's why she did it

We had the pleasure of interviewing Elliot Greer over Zoom video!Elliot has pulled us in again with another beautiful story. "I Bought A Honda" is about getting memorabilia of a love you once had. Elliot's posts teasing “I Bought A Honda” across IG have already garnered 1 millions since January 5th of this year.“I Bought A Honda”, Elliot comments:“ ,”Like many of my songs, “I Bought A Honda” is a fictional story derived from glimpses of personal experience. Fleeting feelings that led my spiraling mind into some other walk of life; in this case, a man romanticizing his past so much that he buys an entire car just to feel connected to it. It's silly when you say the name or try to summarize the concept, but the actual lyrics and melody will try their best to break your heart. You do have to listen carefully, but it's worth it for the punchline I think.”Watch the music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V2t7F9hLdMAbout Elliot Greer:Whether scrawled in a handwritten diary, committed to the pages of a book, or posted online, an authentic story will resonate. From a stark and stripped-down perspective, Elliot Greer delivers unfiltered truth with grizzled, yet warm intonation accompanied by acoustic guitar. For as much as he harks back to an old school troubadour tradition, his appeal transcends eras. As such, he asserts himself as the rare singer-songwriter who can cut through the noise on social media with tens of millions of views or pack a residency gig on a weekly basis. Growing up in Scotland, he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York city and later landed a part in Glen Hansard's Once in upstate New York —only for COVID to shut down the production before it got off the ground. Armed with a basic $100 microphone purchased by his girlfriend, he wrote, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered his independent debut, Handcrafted, in the bathroom of his apartment. Simultaneously, he gigged nonstop, busking 357 days in Central Park, performing anywhere around town with a stage, and joining Ashley McBryde and John Osborne for a performance on The Tonight Show at Jimmy Fallon. In 2022, he launched a TikTok account and broke through with the single “Bleed.” A video of Elliot with an acoustic guitar singing his soul out caught fire, reeling in 8 million views on Instagram and 5 million on TikTok. Now, the Scotland-born and New York-based artist forges a lasting connection on a series of 2023 singles for Arista Records and much more to come, including the captivating and cinematic “I Bought A Honda.”We want to hear from you! Mark and Elaine from The Honeymoon Period podcast join Flixwatcher to review Mark's choice Once. Once is a 2007 Irish romantic musical drama written and directed by John (Sing Street, Begin Again) Carney. It stars Glen Hansard as ‘guy' and Markéta Irglová (in her first acting role) as ‘girl', who ended up as a couple after working together and later performed together as the Swell Season. Guy is busking on the streets in Dublin when he meets girl, a Czech flower seller who is attracted to his music and asks him about his songs. They go for a coffee and he tells her that he is also a vacuum repair man. The next day she returns with her hoover and reveals she is also a musician. They visit a piano store and she plays the piano for him. Despite trying it on with a desperate offer of “hanky panky” their relationship blossoms and they secure a loan to record his songs professionally. Shot in a hand held style, on a budget of $150,000, Once was a surprise huge success and took $23.3 million at the box office and won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Falling Slowly'. Recommendabilty for Once was pretty solid, it is impossible to hate on this charming little film that doesn't go for the Hollywood ending. Remaining scores were very also strong, only slightly lower for repeat viewing, to give an overall rating of 3.96.   [supsystic-tables id=320] Episode #307 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #307 Crew of Mark (@mark_greg) and Elaine (@elainegwrites) from The Honeymoon Period podcast Find their Websites online at https://t.co/CiX1Wv5dyH and at https://twitter.com/guardian and at https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle Please make sure you give them some love   More about Once For more info on Once, you can visit Once IMDb page here or Once Rotten Tomatoes page here. U2 released Songs of Surrender, a new compilation of some of their best songs stripped down and reworked, on St. Patrick's Day 2023. We knew that was coming but what was a bit of a surprise was on the same day they released a documentary/performance via Disney+. Titled Bono & The Edge - A Sort of Homecoming with David Letterman, it captures the legendary singer & guitarist without their bandmates (Larry Mullen, Jr. was recovering from an injury, Adam Clayton was making a film) in Dublin discussing how some of their biggest and best songs came to be, how they've reworked them and even how they've updated them. David Letterman serves as the narrator/interviewer and is very Dave, not only when speaking with Bono & The Edge but with Dubliners, Irish citizens, and performers. We're generally not in favor of reworking or changing classic tunes but the band have found an amazing balance between staying true to the original while stripping it down to it's essentialness. The boys give Dave and the viewer a better understanding of what it means to be Irish, how Dublin has evolved in the last 50 years and where the band find themselves now. The real treat is the two performances - one at The Rotunda which was once a hospital (where Bono was born) and one at McDaids Pub whis is more than 200 years old. To watch them perform in both these settings with friends like Glen Hansard in an intimate setting is special and that's why we did this episode on this very special show.
