Andrew read the paragraph aloud; it describes the two as "lovable, loutish, and incredibly accomplished guys… not bad for a pair of dudes with limited mental capacity."JD's verdict: lots of love for the Hip Museum, but that one's a reach.Gus / UsDave's thesis: he doesn't hear a bear at all. "It's not what's troubling Gus. It's what's troubling us." He's been on that line for twenty years.JD points out the Gordism that makes it work — dropping the G, so "troublin' us" and "troubling Gus" are phonetically the same thing.Duxoop extends it: we've all watched a zoo animal pace or swim figure eights, and that should be troubling us.On the lyrics generally: Gord's word-smithery rewards straining to hear it, and the panel confesses to mumbling through parts for two decades. Compared to Nautical Disaster — all story, no chorus, no pattern — Gus is manageable, but only just.Duxoop's StoryLast year, when the countdown hit No. 31, Duxoop was three months into a nursing home stay with medical issues. Twenty-odd years earlier he'd started going to karaoke — big, scary-looking, socially awkward, mistaken for the bouncer. Now he was in his 60s, in a wheelchair, and the line landed like a ton of bricks: old and grey, and no one's afraid anymore.He sang it at the nursing home. "I don't think I've ever sung a Hip song with more feeling than I do with Gus." Grace, Too he can't fake — he feels like a schmuck trying to match Gord's intensity. Gus he doesn't fake.And after a week of thinking about it for this episode, he made a bold statement: Gus is now his favourite Tragically Hip song, over Grace, Too.Dave's Story — Al, Gus, and Colonel MustardDave's friend Al Morton died suddenly last November. They bonded over the Hip and golf at Dave's club. Al's nickname was Gus.In their fantasy football pick'em league, Al's picks stayed on the board for the rest of the NFL season. "A real lump in my throat."Al's memorial is this Friday at the Dunany Country Club in Wentworth, Quebec — halfway between Ottawa and Montreal. Ashes scattered around the course in the morning; speeches and a gathering at night, billed as his "after par-ty."The family asked for seven or eight Hip songs. Dave and friends have twenty ready, after two nights jamming at his buddy Chris's place. Dave waited 45 years to do this.His approach: very much not trying to be Gord. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. Irish musician Glen Hansard, best-known for his band The Frames and his part in the 2007 film ‘Once,' died July 29 in a motorcycle crash. He was 56. Hansard got his start busking in the streets of Dublin. Ironically, it was his headmaster who urged him to drop out of school to pursue music. Today, we pay tribute to singer-songwriter Glen Hansard (1970-2026), frontman for the Frames and Swell Season.  In 2009, Fretboard Journal publisher Jason Verlinde sat down with Glen at Seattle's Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub for an hour-long chat about guitars (including his famously worn Takamine), meeting your heroes, busking, and more. Today, we're sharing the audio from that conversation for the very first time.  This interview ended up serving as the cover story for our 17th issue, which we published in 2010. As you'll hear, this was recorded 16 years ago in a busy pub and was not meant to be a podcast. There is plenty of background restaurant noise and the occasional interruption from fans and waitstaff. In the early 90s, things were radically changing for music. After a decade where music in the mainstream was often beholden to production excess, gated drums, and where there was ofte more polish on a recording than on a hospital floor, underground bands (for a time) brought things back to basics in the wider arena. Guitar riffs, hooks, and volume became the norm again (for a time). So, how did a film about a group of Dublin youths playing tough 1960s soul – as well as its soundtrack – become one of the biggest phenomenons around in 1991, the same year as Nevermind? Welcome to episode 137 of See Hear....sort of. In early July, Kerry and I recorded an episode of Reel Britannia with our dear friends Scott and Tom (of the Banned Biographies podcast). I knew Scott was recording an episode dedicated to Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments, and I pushed Kerry and my way onto the episode.....this is one of my favourite films ever, and knew we had to be part of the conversation. Scott has very graciously allowed me to put this episode on the See Hear feed as well. We will be welcoming the RB crew for an episode of See Hear in September, so it's a cross pollination thing going, you see. At the time of recording, it was a mere few weeks before the tragic death of Glen Hansard who was part of the Commitments ensemble. Because of its recording date, there is obviously no mention or tribute to this great musician (and from all accounts, a wonderful human being). We now dedicate this episode to his memory. We have a wonderful conversation about the power of music to bring people together, and the power of ego to tear the apart. Despite the film having a string element of social realism, this is no dire tale of the hardship of existence. Jimmy Rabbitte is a young music fan (played by Robert Arkins, not Argyle as I stupidly say in the podcast) who puts together a soul band – the music of the working class in his estimation – to bring joy to Dublin. What follows is an exercise in what happens when he brings 11 people together to play some of the most joyous and heartbreaking popular music of the 20th century. They form a microcosm of society who can achieve greatness and tear at each other. These youth learn to have aspirations greater than the hand that their hard lives have dealt them. Sounds serious, right? Nup – it's as funny as all get out, while still making some serious points about how people can love and hate each other all at once. KC chats about the loss of Irish music icon Glen Hansard.From his early days cutting his teeth busking on Grafton Street and fronting the legendary The Frames, to his unforgettable film appearances in The Commitments and his Oscar-winning magic in Once, Glen's voice has been the soundtrack to generations of Irish lives.

Episode 34 of On The Record opens in sombre territory, with Brian Wise and Michael Mackenzie remembering Glen Hansard, the Irish singer-songwriter, Frames frontman and Once star who died aged 56 following a motorcycle accident outside Dublin. Hansard's career stretched back to the formation of The Frames in 1990, before his work with Markéta Irglová as The Swell Season, and a substantial solo catalogue. But it is the memory of his live shows that looms largest here.  Wise recalls a performer who gave audiences everything, including the habit of leading crowds from the venue and into the street for impromptu singalongs. Hansard's concerts, he says, had the uncommon ability to turn a room full of strangers into a temporary community. Irish musician Glen Hansard, best-known for his band The Frames and his part in the 2007 film ‘Once,' died July 29 in a motorcycle crash. He was 56. Hansard got his start busking in the streets of Dublin. Ironically, it was his headmaster who urged him to drop out of school to pursue music. Dublin soul, magnificent music and enough creative differences to sink a small record label. This episode was recorded a couple of weeks ago, before the terribly sad news of Glen Hansard's death earlier this week. We remember him with great affection as Outspan Foster, one of the unforgettable faces and voices at the heart of The Commitments. Dublin has the music. Jimmy Rabbitte has the ambition. What he does not yet have is a band, any money, or the faintest idea how to keep a roomful of volatile musicians from throttling one another. This time on Reel Britannia, Scott is joined by Maurice in Melbourne, Kerry in Boston and Tom from just down the road for Alan Parker's joyous, foul-mouthed and gloriously chaotic 1991 musical comedy. Based on Roddy Doyle's novel, The Commitments follows Jimmy's attempt to bring soul music to the working-class streets of Dublin by assembling a group whose talent is matched only by its ability to argue. The team discusses the film's extraordinary cast, including Robert Arkins, Andrew Strong, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Bronagh Gallagher, Colm Meaney and Glen Hansard. Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard died today in a motorcycle crash in Ireland at the age of 56. We sat down with him in April to talk about his storied career and his final album, "Don+t Settle – Transmissions East and West." Here's what we wrote about that conversation at the time.–The song “Falling Slowly” first debuted in the 2007 indie romance film “Once” starring Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard and Czech-Islandic singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová. It tells the story of a dramatized version of their own musical partnership.That song won an Oscar for best original song and the musical duo became a hit in the U.S. when they recorded and toured as The Swell Season.But long before any success stateside, Hansard was a fixture of the Irish music scene, first busking on Dublin streets at age 13.
