Marty Stuart rocked the country radio in the early 90s and albums that blended Steve Earle-esque country rock with badass guitar playing and a nod to traditional country. In this episode, we take a listen to the trajectory of Marty's music. Traditional country to modern country to where his music lives now: as rock music. Did that really happen? Stuart has more than 20 studio albums, has charted more than 30 times on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, won five Grammy Awards, and is an engaged member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame. It is a fascinating truckload of music. Let's go. Email the show: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com NOTES: The Fabulous Superlatives, Marty Stuart's band since 2002, includes Stuart on guitar and mandolin, Kenny Vaughan on guitar, and Harry Stinson on drums, and from 2002 until 2008, Brian Glenn on bass. From 2008 until 2015, Paul Martin was on bass. In 2015, Chris Scruggs replaced Paul Martin on bass, and also played steel guitar. Every member sings. Stuart's guitars also include "Clarence", a two-tone Fender Telecaster, once owned by Clarence White. This instrument is the original B-Bender guitar, built and designed by White and Gene Parsons (Byrds) in 1967, to allow the guitarist to manually raise the guitar's 'B' string one whole step to play in a style similar to a pedal steel guitar. Stuart bought the guitar in 1980 from White's widow. Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers gave one of her father "Pops" Staples' guitars to Marty Stuart after Pop's death. "My father was Marty's godfather. My sisters and I took him in as our brother. He's the only one that I've heard who -- when he's playing guitar, sounds like Pop. He can play just like him."
The town of Elkin, NC, boasts only 4000 residents, but its downtown seems to resemble a town much larger than that. What looks to me like a downtown about half the size of my home town of Shelby, NC, turns out to be a good bit less populated than its footprint suggests. But making a bigger impression than expected is in keeping with everything I have experienced in this foothills town in the northwest part of the state — Elkin likes to punch above its weight. My first trip to Elkin was for the Reevestock Music Festival, created by the band Time Sawyer, whose members largely grew up there. It is a festival that garners national artists as well as regional favorites, and every time I returned, it came up a winner: well balanced, with enough star power but also plenty of pleasant surprises and new discoveries, plus it was almost intimate with its crowd of hundreds rather than thousands in attendance. Elkin remains a favorite destination for that festival alone, and now I can add to that list, with The Martha Bassett Show producing live events at the Reeves Theater for eight years running. Martha Bassett celebrates with guests and house band at the finale of The Martha Bassett Show 04/03/25Photo: Steel String Photography The Martha Bassett Show put on its 100th episode in April of this year, which seemed like the perfect time to trek up and take it all in. The show featured guests Liz Longley from Nashville, Hank Pattie & the Current from the Triangle region of NC, and a VA music artist who is best known for building guitars for stars like Eric Clapton, Gillian Welch, Vince Gill, Peter Rowan (and hundreds of others, famous or not), Wayne Henderson. I spoke with both Martha Bassett and Wayne Henderson while there, where we talked with Martha about the extraordinary nature of the show with collaboration amongst its guests a built-in feature, the ever-changing and now perhaps especially challenging landscape for the arts, and with Wayne about his world famous instruments as well as memories of Doc Watson, and current Grand Ole Opry member and client Marty Stuart. All of that and a lot more is here, including musical excerpts from The Martha Bassett Show on this episode of Southern Songs and Stories. We had a great time chatting with Chris and Corey Weber of Clarence Tilton. We picked their brain about how they taught themselves music, birdwatching, the difficulty of choosing a band name, and their most recent releases “Fred's Colt” (featuring Marty Stuart) and “Flyway Cafe” (featuring Presley Tucker). Formed in 2014 from Omaha's storied rock scene, Clarence Tilton is led by brothers Chris and Corey Weber, who grew up in a small town (1,000 people, 10,000 cows), learning guitar on borrowed instruments and bonding over influences like Neil Young, Son Volt, The Allman Brothers, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and James Gang. The five-piece band featuresco-songwriter Paul Novak (guitar, vocals), Jarron Wayne Storm (drums, vocals),and Craig Meier (bass). Their music, rooted in family legacy and small-town life, balances raw alt-country grit with rich, melodic hooks. Blake Christiana is the creative force behind this relentlessly touring band that has shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, and Allison Krauss.
Guitarist and session ace Richard Bennett joins me on the show this week. Originally from Phoenix, Richard spent the first big chunk of his career in the 70's LA studio scene, before moving to Nashville in the 80's where he's been a mainstay in studios ever since. Richard is known as one of the ultimate sidemen and spent 17 years in Neil Diamond's band, playing on all of his records and tours from '71 to '87. Richard has had another long-term sideman gig playing guitar in Mark Knopfler's band since '94, and that continues to this day, touring in his band and playing on all of his records, including the latest “One Deep River” from this year. Aside from those impressive long-term gigs, Richard has played on countless sessions and gigs for artists like Roseanne Cash, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Iris Dement, and Waylon Jennings. He also loves to write and record his own music, and is constantly working on the next set of tunes to get into the studio to document. His latest is called “Talltale Tunes” and it's a killer record of great playing, tone and creativity. Richard is also an in-demand producer and has helmed an impressive list of albums in the last few decades as well. He had a huge role in the Nashville session scene of the 80's and 90's that continues to thrive, and I loved getting a chance to hear about that era of Nashville. I've spent the last year playing in a band with Richard called The Volcano Brothers, playing all 1920's and 30's Hawaiian music, with Richard playing ukulele. While we just play tiny local gigs around Nashville with that band, I still get to see and hear Richard's amazing touch on his instruments, and the dedication and the preparation that he puts into every show, no matter how small! He's an incredible musician, an encouraging band-mate, and an inspiring person to be around, and we had a very enjoyable conversation about his history in music and the recording studio. https://youtube.com/live/4_iffBMGZ5s You wouldn't believe Mico Klokoc Thompson's story—it's like something out of a rock and roll legend. This guy's been hooked on electronics since he was just a little kid, probably around six. His grandfather used to tinker with tube TVs, radios, and ham radio setups, so there was always some cool gadget to mess with at his grandparents' house. Oh, and his grandfather also played a little guitar, which kind of planted the seed for Mico's lifelong love of music and tone. By the time he was 12, Mico was already reaching out to big names in the industry. He wrote to Ken Fischer from Trainwreck Circuits and even the artist relations team at Kramer Guitars. And get this—Ken Fischer actually responded and told him to stay in touch. Talk about a promising start! Fast forward a few years, and by 17, he was on the road with Aerosmith, working behind the scenes while Guns N' Roses was the opening act. Can you imagine being a teenager and getting that kind of backstage pass to rock history? From there, he jumped into the Hollywood music scene, fixing tube amps and working with local guitarists at Amp Crazy. It didn't take long for Mico to start rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in the game. He worked with Eddie Van Halen, Ratt, Poison—you name it. And when he moved to Nashville, he didn't slow down. Instead, he started working with country legends like Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, and Merle Haggard. But Mico's not just some behind-the-scenes tech guy. He's been a key player at Trainwreck Amplifiers for years, partnered with One Control Effects and Amplifiers, and he even designs his own amps now. He's all about restoring vintage gear and helping musicians perfect their tone. I mean, he's worked with everyone from Ted Nugent to Pat Travers, and even up-and-comers like Benito Di Bartolie and Dante Bonasera. Mico's the guy you call when you're serious about tone. Whether it's building a custom amp, restoring a classic, or just dialing in that perfect sound, he's the one who makes it happen. He's a legend in his own right. Joe & Paul host this special episode with UK super fan JD ShelburneJD Shelburne is that rare artist for whom the dream, the life, and the music have all come together.“I've been blessed enough to hit that sweet spot,” says the lanky Kentucky native, whose music channels his small-town roots amid his journey from regional star to the national stage. “And the best part is, I have the truest and most loyal fans in the world, and they've been with me every step of the way.”JD's journey has taken him from Taylorsville, Kentucky, to the iTunes Country Top Ten, landed him on CMT and the Circle Network, found him opening for ZZ Top, Miranda Lambert, and Marty Stuart, put him on the cover of Kentucky's Official Visitor's Guide, a recording session with the Legendary Oak Ridge Boys and made national news for the sheer size and exuberance of a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands at one of his hometown concerts. Now, with his latest album, Neon Hallelujah, JD takes another major leap forward, one that locks down his position as one of modern country's most exciting and accomplished singers. The follow-up to his breakthrough Straight From Kentucky album, Neon Hallelujah finds JD at the top of his game as a singer and writer, with 14 new songs destined to join the ranks of fan favorites as they offer further peeks inside his heart and soul.Sponsored By:State Line Co.Use promo code bleedblue10 for 10% off all merch!www.statelineco.shopFollow us on social media!Twitter - BleedBNetworkInstagram - BleedBlueNetworkTikTok - BleedBlueNetworkOfficial

Episode 296: With Americanafest landing in Nashville, Craig Havighurst looked over the many artists breaking out of Music City and got especially excited about Baltic Street Hotel by rocking songwriter Sophie Gault. It'll be released on Friday, but Craig's been listening for a few weeks and finds it rich with personal details, sharp melodies, and an old school Americana spirit that evokes Lucinda Williams or Kathleen Edwards. The show features exclusive teasers of several songs from this LP, produced by Ray Kennedy at his request. Also in the hour, a rising star of acoustic Americana, 15-year-old mandolinist Wyatt Ellis, who recently released his solo debut with guest turns by some of today's best mandolin players, including Marty Stuart.
Wyatt Ellis shares his backstory and music from his debut album Happy Valley. Born not far from the Great Smoky Mountains, Wyatt Ellis' first recollection of hearing the mandolin was Bobby Osborne's iconic solo on the Osborne Brothers' bluegrass classic “Rocky Top.” Hearing the Tennessee bluegrass anthem echo throughout the early years of his childhood is what led Wyatt to set his sights on learning to play mandolin. With his schedule packed with school, Boy Scouts and team sports, it was hard to find time for music. The COVID lockdown began just as he was forging those real-life musical friendships. Team sports, local lessons and bluegrass jams came to an abrupt end. At the same time, festivals and in-person recording sessions suddenly stopped, parking the most in-demand bluegrass musicians at home. Many of his favorite mandolin players started teaching or simply spending more time connecting within the community online. In the fall of 2020, Wyatt was chosen by his hero Sierra Hull, herself a former mandolin prodigy, for a Tennessee Folklife apprenticeship. Eager to improve under the watch of a true virtuoso, Wyatt describes those one-on-one tutorials as “working on exactly what I needed to work on at the time. Details. Timing. Tone."In October 2022, Wyatt performed alongside former Bluegrass Boy Peter Rowan and Grammy winner Molly Tuttle at Rowan's induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Wyatt was invited by his ultimate mandolin hero, Marty Stuart, to help kick off the Grand-Reopening of the Ellis Theater in Philadelphia, Mississippi. In February 2023, at 13 years old, he made his Grand Ole Opry debut appearance with bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent. Moments after his debut appearance he was jamming backstage with acoustic icons Vince Gill and Mark O'Connor. In March 2023, Wyatt joined the genre's newest superstar, Billy Strings, to honor Doc Watson at his 100th birthday celebration. Some dynamite gospel this week that leans heavily on the influencers, but we won't let that lock us in. We'll be cutting a broad swath across the Americana landscape, with deeper gospel tracks from some of the greats like the Selah Jubilee Singers, the rollicking Reverend Robert Ballinger, The Bronzeman, and some other greats you may or may not know. But we'll also share tracks from the next generation secular branding with just a taste of gospel in their music: Johnny Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, and Curtis Mayfield. We'll also share a couple of Marty Stuart gospel tracks in another look at the deepest roots from the past century. So grab the headphones and get ready for a revival without beating you about the head with any false fundamentalism. Legends celebrates Billy Thomas, incredible drummer of McBride and The Ride with the debut of their new EP Amarillo Sky. Billy was the drummer for The Hudson Brothers Band, then with Ricky Nelson. Next, he played behind the one and only Mac Davis for his shows in Vegas. Mac Davis was Billy's first taste of Urban Country. The Cinderella story continued. After moving to Nashville in 1987, he got his first job within the first few days after auditioning with Vince Gill. And then he performed on Emily Lou Harris' album Blue, followed by work with Marty Stuart. Hear Billy's inside story on Tony Brown, the kingpin for MCA Records, his music producer, and former pianist for Elvis. Tony brought Terry McBride and Ray Herdon together for the three part harmony of McBride and The Ride. They produced five albums from 1989 through 1995. And the rest is history for this SINGING DRUMMER. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.
BRENNEN LEIGH is a songwriter, guitar player, mandolin player and singer whose storytelling style has elevated her to cult icon status in Europe, Scandinavia, the United States, South America and the United Kingdom. Her traditional country is from the same cloth as Patsy Cline and Marty Stuart. Her songs have been recorded by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell and many others. JILL ANDREWS is an acclaimed singer-songwriter who gives the unsung the voice they have always deserved. From her days fronting lauded Americana group, the everbodyfields, to her successful solo career as a writer and performer, Andrews' music has taken her far from her East Tennessee home. Musically, there are echoes of the Indigo Girls' more folksy side, especially since Andrews' voice bears a passing similarity to that of Emily Saliers. Johnathan Moore is a 13-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist from Eastern Kentucky.
Have you ever been tempted but knew your choice was not the best? How did you deal with it? Would you change a thing if it happened again? This week's song describes a man who is tempted by a woman who tries to steal his heart. He is drawn in by the mystery in her eyes and can't resist her sweet kiss. He can't deny that he is tempted despite knowing he might get hurt."Tempted" is a song co-written and recorded by Marty Stuart. It was released in August 1991 and reached #5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. You could say “Tempted” is a very special song. It's about surviving tragedy even though you can barely breathe while being tempted by a relationship that wasn't meant to be. We've all had that same experience at some point, making life more meaningful.Join me and Nashville recording artist Blu Waters, the voice behind the songs we feature in each episode. The same songs guide the reading from my soon-to-be-published book I'm Just a Country Song: Three Chords and Only My Truth.“Giving up is simply not an option for me. Failure is an option because I've learned so much from my failures, but just throwing in the towel is not an option. I would much rather look back on my life and have no regrets than long to have taken a chance on my dreams.” - Blu WatersIn This Episode:- Was “Tempted” Marty Stuart's biggest commercial success and his highest charting solo single?- Have you ever been tempted but knew your choice was not the best?- Let's sing along with Blu as she sings “Tempted”- Lyrics and chapter reading- Teaser and quiz for episode 8 (“I've Got a Tiger by The Tail”)Connect with Blu Waters:Website - https://www.chooseyourblu.com/Facebook - https://web.facebook.com/iambluwaters/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/iambluwaters/TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@iambluwatersYoutube - https://www.youtube.com/@iambluwatersConnect with Darlene Chambers:Website - https://fullcircles.biz/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/darlene.chambers.37625/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/ImJustaCountrySong

Marty Stuart has dedicated his life to playing and preserving old country music. During his 40-plus years as a solo artist, Marty has released more than 20 albums and racked up numerous honors, including five Grammys, and an induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Marty started his career at the age of 12 playing mandolin in a gospel band. By 21, he'd joined Johnny Cash's touring band, and eventually became a solo artist who combined classic rockabilly sounds with bluegrass and cosmic country. His latest album has a sweeping, spacious feel that's meant to conjure up visions of desert horizons and endless stretches of two-lane highways. For today's episode, Bruce Headlam met up with Marty Stuart at Bridge Studios in Brooklyn. Marty shared stories about first going on the road with the Sullivan Family Gospel Singers, and the very first show he ever played backing Johnny Cash where Marty pretended to know how to play the fiddle. Marty also talks about how a star-studded studio session with Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis gave him the confidence to pursue a solo career in country music.
