Joel Plaskett's eleventh album—One Real Reveal is special for several reasons. Joel sat down with a small Telefunken KM56 microphone and a 4-track recorder and recorded the tracks for One Real Reveal ON CASSETTE TAPE starting with the brilliant High Summer. This album and its music is bare. Because it is, you're forced to listen to the music and especially the lyrics. These are words and melodies that will still be the air in a concert hall. IF you can get in. Joel's current tour out west is Sold Out. Fittingly, the tour ends at Massey Hall in Toronto. It too will be Sold Out. Discover the new sounds of Joel Plaskett, just like the old Joel Plaskett only quieter, more reflective. I've been waiting many years to have Joel to myself. Just to exchange ideas and passions. My timing couldn't have been better. One Real Reveal was well worth the wait. The other welcome guest is our pal Leeroy Stagger. Host of Dirty Windshields Radio Hour on CKUA Saturdays. But before Leeroy joined us, he was a highly respected singer/songwriter and he continues to write, record and perform his very personal songs. Leeroy has just released his latest album 3 am Revelations. In it, Leeroy reflects the life around him. The road, family, social issues and seeking the answers to all his inner questions. Just a heads up – 3 am Revelations rocks. Bangers like Watermelon Pink, Count to 10, These Days. Then finds balance with reflective gems like It's gonna be alright (someday), Alberta Stars, Life's a Drag, etc. It's good to have friends and partners like Leeroy Stagger. Great album Leeroy! You nailed it.
Episode #1037 A look back at an amazingly successful UMFM Pledge-O-Rama where we once again received a lot of love and support from our kind & generous listeners. If you missed out and still want to show your support, check out the Music Angels page for more info. Today, we're back to doing what we love to do, sharing great new music that I think you should hear, and encouraging you to check out live music! We also tried out a new segment, The 4:00 Feature, where I provide an in-depth look at an artist or album that I love and want to share with some music and stories. Today, we kicked it off with a look at the music of a longtime friend of the show, and someone who took the time to make a donation to Pledge-O-Rama, Leeroy Stagger! We heard some early stuff, some live stuff, and some rarities as an introduction to his catalogue, which I highly recommend exploring! leeroystagger.com leeroystagger.bandcamp.com substack.com/@leeroystagger playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-fCw

Episode #1025 This one is kind of "inspired" (stolen) from a post that Leeroy Stagger made on Facebook a while ago, asking for recommendations for "perfect albums front to back." Most of my very favourite albums, and the majority of the albums that I listen to, seem to have at least one track that I, personally, could do without. When I'm listening to certain records, I know exactly which track(s) I'm going to skip. I've made playlists where I've "fixed" albums by removing a track or two. I guess I'm kind of hard to please. But every once in a while, I encounter an album where every track works and I wouldn't dare skip any of them. It's harder than you might think to find an album with no weak spots. I can immediately think of a few, but I can think of WAY more where there's one or two tracks that I don't love as much as the rest. With that in mind, I did a deep dive into my collection looking for albums where I don't think there's a weak track. Because it's difficult and my collection is kind of diverse, I couldn't limit it just to the standard singer/songwriter fare, so you'll hear a few things on this show that you wouldn't hear otherwise on the program. I didn't have time to relisten to them all, so I can't guarantee that every album played or mentioned in these three hours is perfect, but I can definitely guarantee that diving into any of these albums will be worth your time and very rewarding! And because this show was pre-recorded and I put a lot of thought into it, I'm calling it one of the occasional "standby" episodes of the show that I might pull out again some day when I can't make it down to the station. I sure hope you enjoy this one almost as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If not, I'm sure I'll be hearing from a few people wondering what the heck I'm doing playing some of this stuff. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-fs8
Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. Something that wouldn't be so easily cancelled when things got chaotic, which was almost always. After much discussion, they landed on a band. Shelby played some campfire guitar and Jess grew up surrounded by music and musicians, although she carried a deep fear of performing. Laura had an unspoken dream to play the violin. A band seemed perfect. It couldn't be that hard, right?Ten years later, and Wild Honey is going strong. Aside from the band, Laura has earned her masters in counselling and opened her own thriving practice. Jess became a pilates instructor and opened a private studio called Free Rein Pilates, recently deciding to step away from instructing to focus on her cattle ranch. Shelby published a novel called Mountain Girl, and has completed two more which are waiting for publication. She was the editor-in-chief at Kootenay Living Magazine prior to the pandemic. In 2019 Wild Honey released their first album, Distant Skies. They are currently working on their second. They have faced moments on stage, back stage, and trying to get to the stage, that have almost broken them, but they have always chosen to continue. The vulnerability and raw fear of performing have humbled them to their cores, but after a good cry and a gin martini, they keep going. The early days of babies, breast pumps, and peeling kids off their legs to go play in bars are over. Now they share beautiful stages with talented musicians who inspire them. They write songs about their journey as women and mothers. They have stopped apologizing. Period. For wanting something for themselves and for failing at it long before they succeeded. For not being perfect. They're not sorry. They're grateful. They won't tell you it's easy, but they will tell you that you deserve to try. You deserve to try and to fail and not say sorry. Because that's life, and while you're lucky enough to be here, you might as well jump in with both feet.Wild Honey plays annually with Barney Bentall and the Cariboo Express, and have beenhonored to share a stage with great talents like The Odds, Leeroy Stagger, Ryland Moran, and many others. Well hello hello hello! It's so good to be back for Season 2 of The FM Podcast. And this week on the show I'm talking to singer-songwriter / producer Leeroy Stagger about Career Longevity. I've known Leeroy a long time + have worked on many albums of his over the years. And it's been pretty cool to see his career trajectory and the many ups and downs, he's experienced along the way. And so we had a great talk about his long career and how he's managed to stay in the game so long. And we also talk about his brand new album Dystopian Weekends which just came out on October 15th. Leeroy is a Fritz Media client and he's also a good friend + I had such a great time chatting with him and I hope you enjoy it! John Wort Hannam hails from Alberta, where he started out writing narrative story songs and character sketches and carved out a name for himself singing those songs and telling those stories all across Canada and beyond. He made a couple of albums independently, then a couple with the help and backing of influential and successful producer Steve Dawson, which were released on Steve's Black Hen Music. In 2011, John and his wife Jenny welcomed a son, Charlie, and he started writing more personal songs, exposing more of his own feelings and experiences. That's where he really found his stride as a songwriter and began to create his most meaningful work. Wanting to record closer to home, he made a couple of albums with Leeroy Stagger, who was my guest on the first episode of Fly with your Shadow. His latest release, 2019's Acres of Elbow Room, came about after a particularly difficult period of dark depression for John which culminated in a physical manifestation of years of undiagnosed and untreated difficulty, when he lost his voice and couldn't sing. In just a couple of weeks, on October 15, John will release a new album, again produced by Steve Dawson, called Long Haul. music credits and more information: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-7q
The very special interview guest is Leeroy Stagger bringing with him new music from his forthcoming album Dystopian Weekends. Leeroy lets us know that unlike the last two albums he made for wider audiences. This one he made for him. Leeroy also talks about hosting Dirty Windshields on CKUA. It got him through the lockdown. Dystopian Weekends captures the sound of early Byrds, Clapton, Laurel Canyon. Two stand-out songs - Buffy's song Greedy Guts and Black Teenagers. That last song deals with the headlines this very weekend. The Floyd George Murder. Full disclosure – I jumped the gun on the release date. It's not coming out until well after Summer but as Leeroy says “the whole model of what is an album release has changed. Given Covid, lockdown, and technical innovations it's a whole new format. So, run with it.”
Miesha Louie has been making music for over a decade now and as the band name suggests, has always been the main driving force behind it. Miesha and the Spanks, has gone through many lineup changes over the years, but Miesha seems to have found the perfect musical partner in drummer, Sean Hamilton – who's been with her for the past five years. When setting out to make this EP, Miesha and Sean initially wanted to tone back their punky roots and write songs that would be more radio-friendly, which is why they brought the project to Americana legend, Leeroy Stagger to produce it. However, Leeroy decided the best thing to do would be to turn everything up – way up - and we are left with what might be the bands loudest work yet. I caught up with Miesha via zoom, to discuss the new EP, and the making of it, and how her and Sean came to meet and why their musical partnership just works. Whether on his own or with his band The Ladies & Gentlemen of the Rodeo, or hosting and performing in Barney Bentall's Cariboo Express, Matt Masters is always busy, even though it's been a decade since his last album, All Western Winners. He's honed a really fun show built around a classic country-honky-tonk sound. Offstage and behind the scenes, he's had a heck of a difficult time over the years, dealing with loss, dramatic health scares, and difficulties that would cause even the strongest to feel some anxiety and depression. It all culminated with him being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. In spite of all the hard times and the subsequent, devastating blow of the COVID pandemic, Matt Masters reinvented himself in admirable fashion, founding Curbside Concerts and building a new model of bringing live music right to people's homes and neighbourhoods, not only in Calgary, where he lives, but quickly expanding between Ontario and BC, with sights set on further national expansion, and even a move into Australia and beyond. As busy as he's been, Matt Masters finally found time to put out a new album, a collection of some of his favourite songs by other writers, called Everybody Loves a Winner, which was produced by Leeroy Stagger (my guest on episode #1). Music credits: "Walk a Mile in my Shoes," "Some Day Soon," and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" are from the new Matt Masters album, Everybody Loves a Winner. You can find it on iTunes HERE. When you choose to have a career in music, you often end up wearing a lot of different hats + learn about many different aspects of the business. And Alberta-based singer-songwriter Ryland Moranz is definitely an artist that knows all about this. Ryland releases his own music as a solo musician, is a part of Leeroy Stagger's band The Rebeltone Sound + he's even worked as a tour manager. Jen talks to Ryland about his experiences in wearing all of these hats, to see if he could share some of the lessons that he's learned in the process.FRESH CONTENT LINKSRyland recommends: C.R. Earlier this week I noticed that over the last few weeks I’ve acquired a handful of brand new releases with songs about The Ramones. Knowing that I had quite a few more on my master library, this became the quest for the week. Then I discovered a site that in 2014 had compiled 400 different songs about this fabulous band. Ok, that filled a few holes in the playlist! This is obviously a fun show that takes a few surprising twists and turns. Who would have guessed that singer/songwriters such as Leeroy Stagger and Jesse Malin had songs about “da boys”? Or that a band like Latte+ has had such tributes on more than one record?

To mark the release of his latest album Me And The Mountain, Leeroy Stagger sits down with Terry to discuss the inspiration behind the new collection of songs. The podcast includes the tracks "Broken Generation", "Open Up Your Heart," "Fire And Fury," and "Caught in the Middle". Leeroy opens up about addressing a marital rough patch, and past trauma through the new record. Plus, he provides details on the companion album Strange Path due out in September 2019.
Summary: This week we chat with singer/songwriter, Leeroy Stagger about his latest album, Love Versus. We get into talking about everything from Buddhism, to alcoholism, to self-love. "Born in Victoria, British Columbia and raised on a little island on the very west coast of Canada, Stagger spent most of his youth with his grandparents who exposed him to the world of country music. Having collaborated with one of his icons, Danny Michel, Stagger found commercial success in the song, "Just in Case", which was featured twice on the television hit, Grey's Anatomy. The life of being on the road and touring at a fast pace did not wear easily on Stagger, who at age 26, realized he had an alcohol problem that was affecting his ability to perform with the commitment and heart his songs demanded. Clean and sober since, Stagger has a strong desire to inspire young musicians that they do not have to succumb to the pitfalls of substance abuse, which can be prevalent in a musician's touring lifestyle." Check out his album here: https://www.leeroystagger.com/ In this episode you will learn: Leeroy’s formative years for his music Started drinking in his early teens How Leeroy faced his past The music industry drinking culture It took a long time for Leeroy to fully get comfortable on stage When did Leeroy start playing music? How Leeroy’s music has opened up a conversation about mental health and anxiety How Leeroy learned to embrace his depression and anxiety How Leeroy learned to push his limits Why Leeroy decided to care less and enjoy more Dropping Leeroy’s barrier was the best thing for his music Leeroy’s anxieties around parenthood The inspiration behind “I Want It All” and how it’s a song about gratitude The inspiration behind “Love Versus” and how it’s about dealing with the negative voices Pay attention to see what works for you What are some daily self-love practices? Quotes: “People appreciate vulnerability. And especially in this day and age, they appreciate truth.” “Instead of attaching the stories to myself, I wanted other people to relate to them.” “I didn’t have the energy to live the way I was living” “I realized I didn’t want to live my life with this fear or being afraid to actually live” “Because I felt lighter, my music felt lighter.” “Our stories are unique to ourselves but at the end of the day, we are in this together” “Sometimes we just need to get through today" Links: Become an Anxiety Podcast supporter: https://patreon.com/anxietypodcast Subscribe to my Youtube Channel: https://youtube.com/timjpcollins?sub_confirmation=1 Retreats page: https://timjpcollins.leadpages.co/retreat/ To get my Toolkit to Overcome Anxiety go to - http://timjpcollins.com/free In the USA text "LEANIN" to 44222 Please click here to leave a review -http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1031117023 Join the Less Anxiety More Life community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/lessanxietymorelife/

Today, a rockin’ tribute to Leeroy Stagger, some stellar new songs, and some great upcoming shows!
It’s a new music kind of day today, and we’ve got a wealth of it, including a bunch from some of our favourites. I also discovered some "new to me" music this week, and that’s just as fun to share. And, only one big show on my calendar this week, but it’s an interesting one, so a preview is in order.

One of the greatest songwriters of all time, and one of the corner stones of our playlists, Paul Kelly returns on Monday, and if that ain’t cause for celebration, what could be? Sticking with Australia for a bit, we’ve got some music from Kasey & Shane, and we discuss those awful, untrue rumours spread by Stu Reid. We’ve also got a pile of new music that you won’t want to miss.

As usual tonight, we’ve got new music and upcoming shows to hype, but it isn’t every week that we’re joined by guests as lovely and talented as Andrea Romalo and Cindy Doire, otherwise known as Scarlett Jane. They’re in Manitoba for a Home Routes tour, and they kicked it all off with a visit to the studio for a chat and some live music!

It’s been an interesting weekend, and we’re in the mood for something positive. Irene’s hitting our friends in the East pretty hard, so a few songs to keep them strong and hopeful. And, this weekend was the funeral for NDP leader Jack Layton, and although funerals aren’t generally all that uplifting or inspiring, his certainly was, so we’ll carry on his message of hope and love with some great music. And, to end it all off, something we all appreciate, Fish & Bird, one of this country’s great up-coming bands, stops by to play live.

It’s Juno weekend in the centre of the universe, so we call up our pal, first-time nominee Del Barber for some inside dirt. We take a look at some great upcoming shows and spin some rockin’ requests.

It’s another incredibly busy week for shows, including the return of Sunset Saloon favourite Christina Martin and the next big show at the Saloon, John Wort Hannam! Also, Cuff the Duke, Del Barber, Matt Epp, and more do shows this week, and we try to give you the details on them all. There are also some great new CDs out now (or soon) and we heard brand new tracks from Lynn Miles, Ken Whiteley, Jim Bryson and more! And, as if that weren’t enough, through the magic of modern technology, we went LIVE to a Leeroy Stagger concert in the Netherlands!

Today we wish all of our American friends & listeners a happy Fourth of July, with a set of patriotic tunes by, for, and about the U.S.A. Closer to home (and our hearts), we’re only a week away from the Winnipeg Folk Festival, so it’s time for Part 2 of the OFFICIAL Winnipeg Folk Festival preview.

We’re back, live, in-studio at long last, and boy, have we got a backlog of great new music to show off, including new ones from Leeroy Stagger, Luke Doucet, Ray Lamontagne, and more! We’ve also got tales from Edmonton Folk Fest, Trout Forest, and info on some upcoming shows as well!

Another pre-recorded episode, but that allows for some special guest cameos from Carter & Jeremy. This week we got a bunch of great music in the mail from Australia, featuring Australia's best, Paul Kelly. We played a bunch from Paul, a tribute to Paul Kelly, and a bunch of stuff from the upcoming Trout Forest Music Festival.

It's Canada Day, up Canada way, and even Steel Belted Radio takes a day to celebrate that. We're pre-recorded this week with a musical tour of our great country with songs about our people & places, by some of Canada's finest musicians (and one honourary Canadian.) Celebrate with us!

This week we hear from a bunch of artists who made (and inspired) great music in 2009. We talked about what they're up to, but more importantly, we dedicated the show to our good friend Dietmar in Germany who is a tireless champion of the music that we love. He is an inspiration and a great help the the artists we talked to, including Leeroy Stagger, Evan Phillips, Romi Mayes, Dustin Bentall, Matt Epp, T. Nile, and more! Here's to you, Big D. Keep up the great work.

I can't believe that I thought last week was a busy one for concerts. The next two weeks are among the busiest I've ever seen in this town, so we've got a lot to fit in, including Leeroy Stagger, Eric Bogle, BOP Ensemble, Dustin Bentall, Brock Zeman, Two Hours Traffic, The Hold Steady, and next week's in-studio guest Amelia Curran! Now that's a busy show full of great music!

A conversation with one of the artists all of the Steel Belted Roots Rock Weirdoes can agree on, Lynn Miles. Plus, an exclusive concert announcement, cool music, and more!

Last night Leeroy Stagger & The Wildflowers rocked the Studome and we heard some moments from that great show. This week promises more great moments, as The Red River Ex is in town, and bringing some good music with it. Also this week, we take a road trip to Fargo for Justin Townes Earle, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson! Lots to enjoy and look forward to.

No, it's just Americana by way of Leeroy Stagger, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Uncle Tupelo (vintage!), Gina Villalobos, the Yearlings, Sorta, Salim Nourallah, Gregory Allan Isakov, Devon Sproule (with a reggae song!), Magnolia Electric Co and JBM.
Featuring a talk with Leeroy Stagger about his fabulous new album, Everything Is Real and his cozy upcoming show. We just had to hear a bunch of his great songs from his already impressive career. Also coming up this week is the CD release/bake sale for Winnipeg's own Western States at WECC, so a couple from them. And, a ton of great new music that's come in recently.

KK takes the wheel for a rare solo show, and does the unthinkable: plays 1.5 hours of great music with no ridiculous arguing. She's trying to ruin the show, I'm sure of it. Hopefully you don't get used to hearing just the best music out there, because the circus will be back in town soon. In the meantime, enjoy it with birthday wishes for Jim Bryson, and great tunes from the likes of The Weakerthans, Leeroy Stagger, Romi Mayes, Matt Mays, and much more!

A little bit of everything we enjoy here on the show: some new, some notable classics, some upcoming shows/show guests, and some dedications. All around good stuff.

For the 2007 to 2008 season we featured 12 tours: Brebach, Optical Identity, Shooglenifty and Tanya Tagaq Gillis, Roddy Hart and Leeroy Stagger, Fraser Fifield Band with Nedyalko Nedyalkov Quartet, Eska Mtungwazi Band, Reinventing The Reel, Aye, An Affirmation of Martyn Bennett, Club Tromolo, Burnsong and Differences in Demolitions.
In a relatively short time, Roddy Hart has established himself as an important and influential emerging talent on the Scottish musical scene. At only 26, and with his eyes fixed firmly on re-igniting the merits of classic songwriting, his already prolific work has generated a substantial fan base. Following in the wake of artists like Dylan, Springsteen, Browne, Young and Finn, his guitar, harmonica and piano-driven songs impact on all who hear them and have subsequently earned him much respect from fans and critics alike. A run of sold-out shows and great reviews have him earmarked as one of Scotland's best kept secrets and destined for great things.
