The Tragically Hip On Shuffle - Live Stream: 'We Want To Be It'Hey, it's jD here.Every once in a while, the shuffle lands on a song that feels like it found you on purpose. This was one of those weeks.'We Want To Be It' - track four off "Now For Plan A" - doesn't get talked about the way'Bobcaygeon' does. It doesn't get the bar rock reverence of the early records. But spend a week with it, really spend a week with it, and something starts to happen. Layers. Lots of them. This week, jD is joined by Steph from Winnipeg, Andrew from Tampa, and Tyler from Etobicoke for what turned into one of the more surprising discussions the show has had. The song is three minutes and twenty-nine seconds. The conversation ran nearly an hour. That ratio should tell you everything. We dig into what "Now For Plan A" actually is as a record - the shortest album in The Hip's catalog, a band quietly fracturing while somehow still playing out of their minds, produced by Gavin Brown under conditions that, as Tyler points out, sound a lot like band therapy. Andrew came in with ten shows under his belt from that tour. Tyler revisited the record for the first time in years and kept finding new things. Steph brought the kind of insight that makes you stop mid-sentence and say yes, exactly that. And then there's the drip, drip, drip.Is the song about Laura Downie? About the band itself? About wanting to dissolve into the music instead of having to manufacture it over and over? Tyler brings a genuinely hot take - sourced from an Alan Gregg interview on Toronto Mike's podcast and Michael Barclay's book - that reframes the whole thing. Andrew adds the Alan Arkin connection Gord himself referenced in early live intros of the song. And jD talks about the three layers of crust this song has developed for him personally over the years. It's a choose your own adventure lyric written by a guy who never gave you the map. That's the feature. Big thanks to Steph, Andrew, and Tyler for bringing the goods on this one. Next week, we hit shuffle again - no idea what's coming, and that's exactly the point. From Our Guests"I'm in season three of Pocket Full of Mojo - wherever you enjoy your podcasts. James Stewart (J.D.M.) speaks with Andrew Coyne about his book, The Crisis of Canadian Democracy. With characteristic wit, insight, and rigor, Coyne dismantles the comforting myths Canadians tell themselves about their political system, revealing a parliamentary structure eroded by unaccountable leaders, disempowered MPs, manipulated elections, and systemic dysfunction. The Crisis of Canadian Democracy is both a wake-up call and a call to action, offering compelling solutions to restore genuine self-government to Canadian politics. Essential reading for leaders, citizens, and anyone who cares about the future of democracy in Canada—or anywhere else. Andrew Coyne is a columnist for The Globe and Mail. Raised in Winnipeg, Mr. Coyne holds degrees from the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics‎. So on this episode, Now or Never takes you into some real-life dating stories as people take the first tentative steps to find love IRL. She's open to partnership, but the online and in-person experiences she's had as a dark skinned Black woman in Toronto have made that difficult. There's just one problem. His living situation is a little…complicated. And tough to sum up in the six minutes he has to make a good first impression at a speed-dating event in Vancouver this weekend. So Ify does a few practice runs with Richard on his opening lines, and finds out why it's so important for him to disclose everything on a first date. After struggling on the dating apps, 29-year-old investment advisor Kyle Long is breaking out of his shell and trying to find love on the dance floor at salsa class – despite being a self-described introvert with two left feet. And an update with Krista Nugent, the real estate agent in Victoria who made headlines last year for a dating application she posted on her Instagram that said, like any realtor, she was open to referrals. In recent surveys, one in four Canadians say they have no religion. A century ago, Canada was widely considered to be a Christian nation, and the vast majority of Canadians claimed they were devoutly religious. But some were determined to resist. In the 1920s and '30s, groups of militant unbelievers formed across Canada to push back against the dominance of religion. Towards a Godless Dominion: Unbelief in Interwar Canada by Dr. Elliot B. Hanowski (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2023), explores both anti-religious activism and the organized opposition unbelievers faced from Christian Canada during the interwar period. Despite Christianity's prominence, anti-religious ideas were propagated by lectures in theatres, through newspapers, and out on the streets. Secularist groups in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver actively tried to win people away from religious belief. Looking at interwar controversies around religion, Hanowski shows how unbelievers were able to use these conflicts to get their skeptical message across to the public. Challenging the stereotype of Canada as a tolerant, secular nation, Towards a Godless Dominion returns to a time when intolerant forms of Christianity ruled a country that was considered more religious than the United States. Dr. Elliot Hanowski is an academic librarian at the University of Manitoba with a doctorate in Canadian history and one of the founders of the International Society for Historians of Atheism, Secularism, and Humanism. In this episode, we welcome Michael, author of "The Mighty Van Halen: One Fan's Journey," for a nostalgic journey through the cassette rock era of the 1980s.We start by tackling some technical challenges with audio and Discord setup before diving into Michael's book, which chronicles his coming-of-age as a Van Halen fan during the golden age of rock. Michael shares how readers from different regions have found his story deeply relatable, highlighting the unique experiences of a generation that built stereos, traded tapes, and lived for new album releases. The conversation flows naturally into memories of first hearing Van Halen—from Michael's 1970s introduction to the band, to watching MTV's early days, to the cultural phenomenon of the 1984 album. We discuss David Lee Roth's eclectic SiriusXM radio show and share stories about the transition from vinyl and cassette culture to the digital age.We explore concert experiences and the modern music scene, touching on Wolfgang Van Halen's upcoming shows, potential collaborations with Billie Eilish, and news about Slash filming in Winnipeg. The conversation takes a fun turn as we share our most anticipated album purchases—from Van Halen's 1984 to KISS's Dynasty—and reminisce about our first music purchases, early disco influences, and those treasured Christmas albums from the late '70s.It's a celebration of the era when music was a tactile experience and every new album release was an event.https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Van-Halen-Fans-Journey/dp/B0G1KYGKGG Linktree: https://linktr.ee/seangeekpodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/meetthegeeksWe are a part of the Boneless Podcast Network: https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.app/Merch:Tee Public: https://www.teepublic.com/seangeekpodcastRed Bubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/seangeekpodcast/shop@seangeekpodcast on Twitter, Instagram and FacebookMentioned in this episode:New Merch AdAn ad that incorporates Red Bubble and Tee Public

A woman signs her life away in the ancient Chinese tradition of corpse marriage in this wickedly hilarious novel about class, ambition, and the burden of being an impoverished model minority.Poor, vicious Locinda Lo is a nobody with a powerful witch for a grandmother and an undead corpse-kid-sister as her only friend. A broke MFA dropout living in Vancouver with six roommates and zero job prospects, she's buried so deep in debt she might as well be six feet under—and her family is in danger of being buried along with her.Desperate to escape her financial woes and save her grandmother and sister, Locinda signs a contract with a nefarious company, Joyful Coffin & Co. Matchmaking Services, to be auctioned off as a corpse bride to the highest bidder. Next thing she knows, she's being smuggled underground into the damp caves where her training coffin awaits. As Locinda prepares for a rich, dying dearly beloved to claim her as his bride-to-be in the Afterlife, her past becomes twisted with that of her grandmother, Baozhai. A feared and revered Villain Hitter, or witchy curse-monger, Baozhai's legacy stretches from 1920s China to the Battle of Hong Kong in the 40s to New York City thereafter. Across the generational divide, one thing becomes achingly clear to them both: you can't outrun your ghosts.Villain Hitting for Vicious Little Nobodies is a daring, genre-bending meditation on life, death, and the murderous cost of living in between. It lays bare the societal and cultural expectations placed on Chinese women and the devastating price of enduring them. Wheeler In The Morning With Dave And Candace Rae

Send a text In this deeply personal and reflective episode, Dave and Candace Rae dive into a conversation most couples avoid: what happens when one of them passes away? Triggered by a particularly brutal Winnipeg winter and a string of losses among colleagues and family, the pair explores their differing views on grief, funeral traditions, and the "business" of death. From Candace's firm refusal to ever remarry to Dave's lighthearted request for a golf tournament in his honor, the conversation balances heavy emotional territory with the couple's signature wit. They also discuss the importance of being "prepared" with wills and life insurance to protect their two sons, ultimately framing the discussion as a celebration of the 17 years they've spent growing together. Support the showFollow us on social media: Dave Wheeler Candace Rae

The amazing story and success of  Winnipeg's David and Joey Landreth continue with the release of their 9th studio album, Dog Ear. The brothers join us from home base as they prepare for a full European tour and select key American dates this year. The new album deals with finding a balance between making music and raising their families. In the music business, with all its touring, it can be really hard on the whole family.   After having a Grammy hit with the Landreth's  Made up Mind,  their music hero, Bonnie Raitt, asked the boys to send her songs from their new album. She came back saying, "I can't decide which one I want to sing on - so how about two songs?". She sang harmony on Knuckles and background on Half Moon Eyes. David and Joey grew up in a musical family and listened to Bonnie and Little Feat growing up.  They can't begin to describe what it's like to not only meet your heroes but to play and sing with them!!  As you can imagine, it's out of this world. Rarely, I hear people say "yeah..i don't listen to Canadian music!  That's like saying, i really hate breathing.  I urge you to take a minute and listen to the brothers and their music. If you don't hear the joy and humanity in their songs, it's ok. Lots of music fans really do. Not just in Canada but all over the World.   (check the tour schedule)   www.thebroslandreth.com
