Mike T. Kerr is a wild guitar player and ambitious songwriter of Canadian heritage and American citizenship. During his time at Berklee College of Music in Boston and in over 10 years of performing, he's lived his life through many historical and contemporary musical styles. Always curious to dig up not only a song's history, but the shape of the world at the time, Mike plays passionately and openly while interpreting the great guitar players of the past. A Danny Gatton lick or Django Reinhardt tune is never far from his fingertips. Mike had a brief but boisterous stint based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia where in 2018 he was nominated by Music Nova Scotia as Musician of the Year. Currently residing in Toronto, pre-pandemic Mike was found gigging regularly at hot-spots like The Cameron House, The Dakota Tavern, and The Local Pub playing original country music almost any night of the week, or lending his guitar skills to Canadian folk singers such as Corin Raymond, Campbell Woods, and others. Guitar Rags & Country Ballads is Mike's first album, it was recorded and released in 2018. It features 7 original Country songs and 3 instrumentals. Mike has kept very busy since that debut release and has endeavoured to release an album a month in 2021 at: miketkerr.bandcamp.com For more on Mike visit: www.miketkerr.com

Transporting a harpsichord across a continent by train, and spending Canadian Tire money on making an album. This is episode 35 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song. Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for the list of songs and artists for the feature. Lou and Peter Berryman met in high school. They graduated in 1965 and started performing as a duo. A few years later, they were married and moved from Wisconsin to Vancouver, lugging a harpsichord Lou built while crossing the continent on a train. The marriage may not have lasted but they continue playing music together. Corin Raymond’s songs are very Canadian , slightly apocalyptic and suggest criminal activity. His song “Don’t Spend it Honey” mentions Canadian Tire money and in 2012 he announced a campaign to raise funds for a new album after fans spontaneously started giving it to him at live shows. The album was released in 2013. Caffe Lena : 60 Years of Song , a production of WEXT Radio.

You probably know him from his roles in shows and movies like The League and Let's Be Cops, or from his hugely popular parody songs; however, now, Jon Lajoie is putting his musical talents to more "serious" use with his indie folk project Wolfie's Just Fine, which we'll hear all about. We also catch travelling troubadour Corin Raymond amid his cross-Canada tour, talking about his latest release, Hobo Jungle Fever Dreams, and how the Canadian landscape seeps into his material. It’s Junofest weekend in Winnipeg, and there’s so much going on that today’s show had to be pre-recorded, but I had to make sure that there was something on to celebrate great Canadian music and a couple of exciting upcoming events.

THE BARN BIRDS are a collaboration between veteran North Carolina Americana songsmith/guitarist Jonathan Byrd and Northwest singer/fiddler/guitarist Chris Kokesh, known for her work with Misty River. Jonathan and Chris Kokesh met in 2007 and dubbed themselves the Barn Birds when they made their first recordings together. The duo's self titled album is an album about romantic love expressed with sophisticated musicality, smart songs and great sound. Byrd and Kokesh include songs written with and by Amy Speace, Anthony da Costa, Carey West, Corin Raymond, Anais Mitchell, Rob Vaarmeyer, Luke Dick, and the late Jack Hardy. MELISSA FERRICK signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-90s. Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock femalesincluding artists like Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and college-mate Paula Colewho sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a string of albums and EPs (more than 16 to date) in which she played almost every instrument herself. She tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S. Her latest is 'the truth is' on MPress Records.

Wasn’t that a party? Corin Raymond & The Sundowners came to town to celebrate the release of Paper Nickels, and I was there for 2 out of the 3 shows. Magical. The project aims to expose great underappreciated songs & writers, so in true folk detective style, we’ve got some of the many songs that Corin played and recommended, as well as some friends and colleagues. On a more sombre note, this weekend marks the anniversary of the death of the late great John Bottomley, as well as the star-studded tribute to another great musician gone too soon, Jay Smith.
It’s Spring Break for the kiddies (and us teachers), and there’s lots of great shows this week to help us celebrate. We preview some of the highlights and one of the most exciting is Thursday’s EP release show for local roots trio Red Moon Road. They dropped by to chat about the EP, the show, and perform for us.
