To share my experience of working in the UK as a Caribbean national.
During a championship game there will always be one winner, let it be you. Be nice to yourself in the workplace and let your aspirations take you to places that you truly enjoy by striving to make a difference in the world. Please try not to forget about the most important commodity, which is you. Keep the momentum, and when it gets too much, take a rest and start building that ground again another day. Do not be too shy to accept help and support from others. Step forward and make yourself the new number one!
Moving into recovery after a long battle with ill health or other extreme problems takes effort and great strength. The pain can leave your body wasted and unable to cope with any more of life challenges. Moving on is the victory after so much pain and hurt as well as other major incidences like the pandemic. To be able to cry and be upset is the healing point to making a fresh start and building a better chance for yourself and others.
There is always a borderline to working too hard and crossing the barriers of being a slave to the employer. It can start as a normal progression to a career and then little by little it takes up all of your life. As time continues, you begin to exchange your job for your family. Becoming a slave is a thin line to a very committed employee, it is important to know yourself and when it gets to that point in your life.
For years we have been told to keep calm and carry on, fight through the pain do not give up. When we keep working without mending our injured souls and damaged bodies we will one day be unable to carry on. Flying with broken wings can lead to dangerous ends, not only for you but others around you. Therefore get it fixed as soon as you can or adjust your flight plans to land in a softer and quieter place to limit further injury to your body and mind.
We can spend our life feeling sorry for the choices and decisions we make everyday. The hardest part is to feel no regret for doing your best and working towards a dream. We will always face challenges and obstacles in our daily life. Have no regret, just keep pressing on with your plans.
As a child we have so many dreams of being an incredible person. We spend our days planning ahead on what steps we will be taking to reach that goal. Sometimes we think it is our talent or the people we know that will help us. Our dreams can become a reality with hardwork and determination. Your dreams are yours, you can make it.
Caribbean women and men face constant discrimination and lack of opportunity in the UK. We are undervalued for the work that we do and even more underpaid in the workplace. During this changing world, when we have others struggling in the same circumstances in the UK. We would like to say welcome to my world!
How many hours do we moan about things not changing in the work place. Everyday should not really be the same, some task you need to repeat like getting up and starting your work day, but should it be boring and lacking substance. We can create our work space as an opportunity to learn something or something about someone. Lets start with small amounts of learning every day without fussing too much about the mundane or boring bits.
The world is still in chaos even with the vaccination programmes being rolled out. I was thinking that we should all hold tight even with all the dramas in the world. I am unsure about the end, but we have to keep strong for our friends and family, so that we can have a vision to keep carrying on in order to see another day. The storms keep coming and we will reach land with some sunshine waiting for us soon.
All the issues last year made this year the worse new year. There are positive things on the horizon such as the vaccine and a hope of things getting back to normal for everyone. I think this year was such a sad messy year with all stores and shops closing with only essential services being provided. This virus have affected so many people including all the fun social events that keep you sane after work.
During this restricted period this christmas, focus on the new christmas that we will be celebrating, it will not be the same as last year. Therefore, it is important to settle our minds on a small xmas tree and limit the festivity to reduce worries. Lets enjoy the moment to have a chance a have a small xmas meal and some rest during this time when family gatherings are limited.
Halloween Night- so scary, noone knocking on the doors tonight. Working can become scary, because you don't know what hides behind close doors and what your employer really thinks about you. So step out and treat yourself to a fine life, you will be happy tonight, so celebrate being a hard working person.
Our day can be full of life worries and trying to complete the jobs on a daily basis and sticking to the same routine every single day. We forget to just look up to the sky and think about its beauty and what lies beyond our world.
When we start a new job there are lots of excitement. You want to work hard and impress your boss. As time goes on, you find yourself feeling down or thinking about moving on to another job or another career, so you plan your escape.
Being the best at your job will sometimes demand over time hours. It may be done for a short period to help your service to run smoothly. It can become routine to work past your working hours during the day or night time if you are a shift worker. It will mean that at some point your working life becomes stressful and you have to take control of those non working hours to have a life.
There are so many demands on the caring worker. We forget to think of the pressures we put on our body and mind. There are people in need and they can take up your whole work day. Take a few minutes to look in the mirror and say job well done.
Working from home and communicating with others on computers with limited social interactions is a different experience. It is like taking part in a social experiment and waiting for the outcome whether this way of living will benefit us or change our world.
The weekend is the best time to relax and take on a slower pace. I know for some jobs, the weekend is the work days. We all deserve a break, so when you have your days off, make them your weekend to free your mind from work.
This is my first podcast about my working life in the UK. I will be inviting my friends to share their own experiences.
