It's so easy to have a good day and then put pressure on ourselves to repeat that the next day and the next day. Today we're taking the pressure off and diving into how we can embracing our changing energy.

1 Timothy #3: God's Messy Children (1 Timothy 1:12-20) Rob Woodrum (8/30/26) Download We're going to continue our series in 1 Timothy this Sunday, reading 1 Timothy 1:12-20. In our text last week, Paul launched his war on error, describing how the leaders in Ephesus had lost their way and were corrupting the message of the gospel. The things that he highlighted gave us clues about what was happening with these leaders. They were reading into genealogies to create some sense of elevation for themselves…a claim to a higher calling and closer position to God.Since they were making themselves out to be special…Paul bares his own past, and shows what kind of person he had been, and how suitable he considered himself to be a minister of the gospel. What does he say about his own background in light of his present calling, in v12-17?In light of leaders trying to elevate themselves, what do you think Paul is trying to get across here? V15 gives one of the most brilliantly succinct summaries of the gospel and it's message to the world. A person could spend a lifetime contemplating that verse, and all of it's implications. Timothy, the one the letter is written to, was a young man Paul had been mentoring. He's very likely only in his early 20's at the writing of this letter. This tells us something about how GOD goes about making someone qualified for the work of His kingdom…and it's a far cry from the expectations we normally like to place on people.Paul finishes off the chapter by calling out two guys by name, Hymenaeus and Alexander. We don't know anything about them. Hymenaeus is mentioned again in 2 Timothy 2:17, and the “cancerous” teaching they endorse has to do with the claiming that the resurrection at the end of the age had already happened. The implications of that message could take believers down many different rabbit holes…even to the point of abandoning their hope in Christ. Paul “hands them over to Satan”…that is, he's not going to try force them into truth…if they want to ally themselves with the enemy of God's plan, let them go for it. But he has a reason for letting them go…a goal he's hoping to see accomplished. What is that goal, in v20? What does that tell us about our hopes, even for those who seem to have lost their faith?The Church isn't a haven for really good people to get together in and pat themselves on the back for how much better they are than everybody else. The church is full of messy people who've been rescued by the unrelenting love of God through Jesus. She recalls sweet memories, from anatomy books at home to anxiously awaiting new Harry Potter releases, painting a vivid picture of a joyful, inquisitive child. As Sebastian entered high school, Jackie and her family began to notice serious changes: depression, anxiety, poor choices, and eventually substance use. Despite treatment, psychiatric care, and rehab, Sebastian struggled with bipolar disorder, experiencing manic and depressive phases. After an earlier attempt, he ultimately died by suicide, leaving Jackie, her husband, and daughter to navigate overwhelming grief, guilt, and unanswered questions. Jackie and Jed discuss the unique stigma surrounding suicide loss, especially in faith communities, contrasting it with how people respond to deaths from accidents or illness. Jackie speaks honestly about unhelpful comments, lingering shame, and the harmful notion that suicide is simply "selfish," reframing it instead as the tragic end of profound suffering and illness—much like an advanced cancer. Jackie explains how her Christian faith, scripture, and a loving church community became her anchor, and she offers practical ways to support grieving families: specific help instead of "let me know," showing up, avoiding platitudes, and being willing to listen and remember the child. Later in the episode, Jed talks with Paul Curley, author of Camp Counseling Mastery, who shares how playful, intentional camp activities can build children's language, confidence, and social skills, especially through movement, fun, and "accidental learning."

Today I want to offer up a compassionate and kinder definition for trying your best.

In the Los Angeles mayoral election, incumbent Karen Bass is facing off against City Councilmember Nithya Raman, pitting two former allies against one another. The contest captured national attention this spring in large part because of the candidacy of former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who was embraced by national MAGA figures. Despite that attention, he failed to make it into the runoff. Since then, the race has gotten messier. A polling firm fabricated a survey showing Bass leading Raman by double digits. Raman hired the progressive consulting group that ran campaigns for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Plus, the two candidates faced off in their first mayoral debate since the primary in Sherman Oaks last week. If like me you find habits a bit tricky, today I'm sharing my latest quirky - but effective! - experiment.

Recorded days after Synod 2023. Last of three reruns in the Before We Knew series. Jason says at the outset that he is not getting into the weeds of what happened at synod. He had been processing the week out loud with Rachel, including his own committee's material being tabled to the following year, and her reply was: so you're telling me that reformation is messy. He takes that as the correction. His own impatience keeps him expecting things to move quickly and on his timeline, and they never do. Over the course of the drive he moved from discouraged to encouraged. The middle of the episode is two texts. From 2 Corinthians, which he points out is probably Paul's fourth letter to Corinth rather than his second — the church there was a mess for a long time and no single letter fixed it. He reads 2 Corinthians 1:8-11, on being burdened beyond strength and despairing of life itself so as to rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead, and 2 Corinthians 4:7-11, treasure in jars of clay, afflicted but not crushed. The point he draws from both: if reformation comes to the CRC it will be because God did it, not because anyone was powerful or smart. Then Calvin, writing about Geneva after his expulsion, as he considered returning. Placed in that station by God like a sentinel at his post, from which it would be impiety to move a single foot; not a day passed in which he did not ten times over long for death, and yet the thought of leaving never came. Jason applies it directly: this is not an excuse to leave, it is a call to stay, even when disappointed, even when frustrated, even when out-politicked. He then lists what synod actually accomplished, against the mood people left with. Two vote counts were given, at 72 percent and 68 percent conservative, in line with the year before — and he says plainly that he was wrong, having predicted 60 to 66 percent for months. Synod 2022 was not a fluke and neither was 2023. Confessional status was upheld. Neland Avenue's appeal was not sustained. Classes and the denomination's institutions and agencies were instructed to come into alignment. The majority report on gravamen was about to pass, which he reads as the reason the end of synod became as chaotic as it did. He also names a new unity among conservative delegates, quoting a brother who texted afterward that for the first time in thirty years he had found the kind of brothers he expected to meet in seminary in the nineties. The charge comes last. The work stopped on the one-yard line, everyone knows where the ball is, and the question is who will lead the CRC now. He quotes a text he received — if conservatives leave now, they never wanted to lead anything — and directs it at his own side: stay and lead your congregation, your classis, your denomination. He closes on reward. Hebrews 11 on Moses counting the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt because he was looking ahead to his reward, and 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 on light momentary affliction preparing an eternal weight of glory. Good work was done at Synod 2023 and it did not produce the earthly outcome people wanted; it may never. The reward is stored elsewhere.
