In this episode, I sit down with percussionist Doug Perkins for a wide-ranging conversation that starts with a few personal connections and quickly opens up into a bigger discussion about music, teaching, and the kind of “improbable events” that can change a person's life. Doug and I talk about our shared link through LSU and Brett Dietz, and Doug tells the story of how he learned bass guitar in the eighth grade to get into a jazz band, which led to rehearsals at home, a punk band with Brett called The Septic Creptics, and a deep early education in groove, feel, and listening. We dig into the teachers who shaped Doug's path, especially Jack DiIanni, and why fundamentals, sound, and real-life performing situations became such a foundation for everything that came next.Doug shares how his background in drum set and bass informs the way he plays and teaches, especially when it comes to music like Steve Reich, where micro-groove, ensemble feel, and knowing your role inside the bigger texture are everything. We also talk about how students learn now, how algorithm-driven listening can shrink context, and why so many young musicians feel pressure to avoid mistakes when everything can feel like a permanent record. Doug explains how he actively teaches context, lineage, and listening, and why basic production skills matter more than ever, including signal flow, microphones, sound reinforcement, and the simple confidence that comes from knowing how to set up a PA or wrap a cable correctly.From there, Doug takes us into his world at the University of Michigan, where he helps lead a large percussion studio with a faculty team that spans orchestral playing, contemporary music, improvisation, and drum set. We talk about the balance between performing and teaching, and how parenting an 18-year-old college student has changed the way he supports first-year undergrads. Doug also tells the story of his long relationship with composer John Luther Adams, including how a formative early experience with Strange and Sacred Noise eventually led to performances in the Alaskan tundra, floating stages in Central Park, and outdoor concerts where the audience hikes in and the environment becomes part of the piece. In this episode of Behind The Decks we checked in with Drum & Bass DJ and producer, DJ Flame Jade. Flame got into D&B when she was going to squat parties underage because she was too young to go to club nights and raves. From there, she began to listen to artists in the scene like Optical, Brocky, Mampi Swift, DJ Hype, Hive, Cause for Concern and Dillinger. In Flame's music journey, we chart this journey through D&B, DJing, producing and getting her career to where it is now. For industry issues, we also discuss dark elements of the industry which persists to this day. This includes female DJs and producers like Flame being asked for sexual favours in return for collaborations from male DJs which continues to this day, even post-#MeToo. We also talk about the challenges she's had from her female peers, for example some female DJs have deliberately broken her headphones before she's due to start her set. We finish by discussing the general flakiness of the industry which is a story across the board and the broken promises and let downs which permeate it and why. For Flame's mental health journey, she experienced a lot of childhood trauma which has shaped her mental health from childhood, through to adolescence and adulthood. Her mum was domestically abused multiple times by Flame's dad and other male partners after she separated from him. Flame and her sister witnessed this abuse, which was extremely violent. Flame's mum became addicted to alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with the abuse, which was projected onto Flame, and she ran away from home at just 10 years old and many times afterwards to escape that home environment. Her father died when she was 13 years old, and her mum died when she was 20 years old, and we explore the grief she felt from both their deaths and how she navigated life beyond that point. Flame is diagnosed with multiple diagnoses, including ADHD, CPTSD and Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, which is another name for borderline personality disorder. We finish by her journey to becoming a qualified Reiki yoga practitioner, and her use of something she calls ‘sound healing', which combines music and yoga together. Bizarre News - December 2025 | Paranormal Podcast In this December edition of Bizarre News, we kick things off with a terrifying close-to-home story from Canton, Ohio, where an off-duty police officer working security at a Walmart experienced what could have been a fatal encounter. While booking shoplifter Shane Newton and his female accomplice in the back of the store, the officer performed only a partial pat-down before turning to radio the station—that's when Newton pulled out a concealed pistol and raised it to fire. In what can only be described as divine intervention, the gun jammed at the critical moment, giving the officer just enough time to deliver a flying knee strike that broke Newman's rib and allowed him to wrestle the weapon away. We also dive into psychic Uri Geller's bold claims about the interstellar comet 3I Atlas, which he insists is actually an alien spacecraft carrying extraterrestrial beings who have peaceful intentions for humanity. Geller even reveals his own alleged encounter from 50 years ago when he claims he was shown frozen alien bodies by Werner von Braun deep beneath NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, connecting his past experience to current cosmic events. Our bizarre journey continues with the disturbing case of Cedric Lodge, a former Harvard Medical School morgue manager who was sentenced to eight years in prison for running a dark web body parts trafficking operation. Between 2018 and 2020, Lodge sold human brains, skin, hands, and even complete faces as if they were baubles or trinkets, with one horrifying example involving skin being tanned into leather to bind a book. We wrap up with a geological mystery from Bermuda, where scientists have discovered a massive 12.4-mile thick layer of rock sitting between the oceanic crust and Earth's mantle—an anomaly never observed anywhere else on the planet that may finally explain why this archipelago appears to float above the surrounding ocean despite having no volcanic activity for over 30 million years.
