We've tuned out of Marvel on the podcast for a little while, but one of the eternally entertaining superheroes, Spider-Man, reignites our interest with Brand New Day. With Doctor Strange having cast a spell at the end of 2021's No Way Home to make the entire world forget Peter Parker, for reasons that Doctor Strange presumably cast another spell to make us forget, Peter, newly isolated, returns to fighting street-level crime in New York City while pining for his old relationships and suffering severe headaches. Can he revive his former life? Surely it wouldn't be a Marvel film if an enormously significant, cliff-hanging event had permanent consequences. Still, even for those as cynical as it's possible to be about the MCU, Brand New Day has plenty to recommend it. It aims for thematic depth - though how fully that's achieved is up for discussion - and is genuinely moving. Indeed, certain moments move the audience to cheer and applaud, which in turn moves Mike to harrumph bitterly. Destin Daniel Cretton, directing his second MCU entry following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, demonstrates a gift for working with actors and a strong instinct for staging action, although Cineworld does its best to undermine those virtues with its poor projection. We also return to our discussion of IMAX and The Odyssey, asking whether the frame's envelopment of the visual field impedes filmmakers' ability to express through composition and framing, and considering whether there's something fundamentally anti-democratic about making films whose fullest form can only be experienced at a handful of cinemas around the world. It has been a long time since we have talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this week we have a lot to talk about. And it is more than just the Doomsday trailer and the upcoming Spider-Man movie. On the plus side, it seems like the MCU may be closer to the darker Marvel that people have dreamed about for years. That being said, we also heard that with the last Doctor Strange movie and The New Mutants. Only time will tell, but we are interested in what is happening. We have nothing against toilet humor and low hanging fruit. Troma is responsible for some of our favorite movies. And just generally speaking it is good to have a palette cleanser. Not every movie can be high art or a thrill a minute slasher. Bowels of Hell is a one joke movie. Literally. Every single gag in the Brazilian import is centered around shit. This is not the problem, however. It actually builds well to a pretty cool ending. But the ride there is an arduous one. When you do something for old times sake, you do it because it's something you used to do and it's a good memory and you'd like to do it again. On Friday's Mark Levin Show, President Trump has repeatedly and clearly condemned Tucker Carlson and for good reason. Carlson has viciously and personally attacked the President, not just disagreed with him here and there. Strange that some close to the President remain close to Carlson, even defend Carlson, given Carlson's relentless personal smears of POTUS. Also, the term “globalist” is oddly misused by those who routinely cut business deals with foreigners yet label others as globalists. Additionally, “establishment” is another term. Such words are being used intentionally and perversely to confound and confuse, but we remain neither. Later, no, we don't need more centralized government.  It's already overwhelmed by hundreds of billions in fraud documented by the GAO and by Musk and DOGE. Instead of endless experiments reinventing the wheel, the focus should simply be ensuring a safe, prosperous, and free society; Americans are not liberals on the dole and do not need government treating them as dependents - Florida serves as the prime example. Any Republican embracing quasi-socialist or centralizing agendas may win a primary but will not win the presidency. Afterward, thanks to communist China, Russia, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, and Hamas much of America's youth is against Israel—an unprecedented level of hatred toward Jews achieved through American podcasters, hosts, social media, and the internet. Israel's small population and limited resources could never win a PR war against the vast funding and influence of these foreign powers. Meanwhile, a poll claims Americans are growing weary of capitalism and losing faith in it. Majority of Americans don't want socialism. The problem is the to demographic changes—new arrivals who do not understand capitalism or the Constitution and simply expect benefits—as well as a broader culture that teaches people not to fend for themselves or pursue individual success but to demand big-government programs and something for nothing.  Finally, Gianno Caldwell calls to discuss the community March Against Violence in Chicago on June 25th.  Four years after his teenage brother Christian was shot and killed in Chicago, Caldwell is marching for justice rather than simply mourning.
