Dick to Star Trek (with some Ursula le Guin because why not), and how she deploys the form to tell a cautionary tale about a world that could have been a lot worse off in its climate breakdown — where Rome never fell, because of the 2nd-century CE invention of the combustion engine. As Solitaire says, if we started burning oil under Marcus Aurelius, climate change would have started much sooner. I'm thrilled to bring you a conversation with a visionary leader whose work is reshaping healthcare innovation—Vic Gatto. Vic is the driving force behind Elevate Health 2050, a bold initiative exploring the transformative potential of Web3, AI, and biotech to redefine healthcare's future, with a special focus on accessibility and impact—areas that touch the lives of women and children every day. Before this, Vic carved his path as the founder and Managing General Partner of Jumpstart Capital, where he's invested in over 200 early-stage healthcare startups, proving that innovation thrives beyond Silicon Valley's shadow, right here in Middle America. Vic's journey began with a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College, giving him a broad foundation, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management, equipping him with the strategic insight to navigate the complex world of venture capital. His entrepreneurial roots trace back to the 1990s, when he co-founded a software company in Boston, growing it from a small team to over 250 employees before selling it—a testament to his ability to build from the ground up. But Vic's story isn't just about credentials or exits; it's about a man who sees healthcare as a mission, not just a market. With Elevate Health 2050, he's pushing boundaries to ensure that the next generation—our women and children—benefits from cutting-edge solutions tailored to their needs. Today, we'll explore how his vision bridges technology and human health, and what it means for families everywhere. So, grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let's welcome Vic Gatto to the show. Enjoy, Dr. M
Sarah Pochin, the newly elected Reform UK MP for Runcorn and Helsby, made headlines with a shock by-election win—snatching the seat by just six votes from Labour. A former Conservative councillor and corporate exec, Pochin's political rise has been marked by controversy, including a judicial reprimand and multiple party switches. Her Commons debut sparked national uproar after she called for a UK ban on the burqa, prompting backlash from Muslim groups and culminating in the temporary resignation of party chair Zia Yusuf.

Prior to coming to Australia, Maxwell spent most of his career in the UK, working within marketing and podcasting, while van Dijk is adland's elder statesman of audio, having run specialist radio agency Eardrum for 35 years. During the podcast conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, the duo discuss the high engagement levels of podcast listeners, why reach isn't everything, and the challenges of the specialist agency cutting through in the market.According to Maxwell: “As a podcast listener, you hear how much wastage there is, you hear how you get served the wrong ads in the wrong environments. When you do get served the right ads it's powerful.”Maxwell argues that one of the major errors being made by marketers and planners is making conversations about podcasts one of reach rather than specialisation. He argues: “One of the big issues itself is that people are still thinking about reach and incremental reach, when actually the podcast medium should be about driving consideration and conversions.“These big brands, you can get your reach from everywhere else, but podcasts, because of the environment, because of how engaged the audience is, you have such a massive opportunity, whether the reach is 100,000 or a million.“You can find a specific audience interested in a specific subject and get them in an environment where they are so leaned in.”He adds: “Too many brands are still thinking about reach when they're thinking about podcast advertising and a successful campaign being about cheap CPMs. Five podcasts of 50,000 listeners is more effective than one podcast of 250,000.”Meanwhile, van Dijk is frank about the pace of adoption of Earmax in the market, saying it has gone more slowly than he anticipated. He says: “I just thought that word would catch on and they'd all be telling their mates and there would be people banging down the door to have us look at their campaigns.“The reality is that there's structures, processes, arrangements, partnerships in place for both the creative and the media, which a tough decision has to be made to go around that.”He adds: “There's a lot of politics.”Today's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. We'll be back with more tomorrow. In the meantime, don't forget to join us for The Infinite Dial Australia, in a couple of hours.I'm hosting a conversation with ARN Media's Lauren Joyce, Thinkerbell's Margie Reid, and Edison Research's Larry Rosin about the state of play in audio. Early in 2024 more than 2,000 people showed up to our Nordstrom store on 57th Street in New York. Not for a celebrity fragrance launch. Not for a new shoe drop. But for a live taping of a podcast. And it wasn't The Nordy Pod. It was a podcast called The World's First Podcast, hosted by our guests for this episode, sisters Sara and Erin Foster. But to be honest, their podcast isn't even the main reason we've invited them to be on our show. The Foster sisters have had an incredibly diverse career in seemingly disparate industries. Daughters of legendary music producer David Foster, Sara and Erin grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by celebrity and showbiz. They found opportunities in the early 2000s acting in film and television, which Erin parlayed into comedy writing, and they both eventually built on to begin co-producing projects like a reality TV spoof based loosely on their own lives, called Barely Famous, and more recently the Netflix show Nobody Wants This starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Aside from that they've had notable success investing in tech companies like the widely used dating app Bumble, and in 2019 launched a venture capital firm called Oversubscribed Ventures that focused on early-stage, disruptive technology startups. But what really makes them relevant in our world is their entrance into the contemporary fashion retail space. Born from a playfully snarky one-off t-shirt designed with the words Favorite Daughter, Erin and Sara have built and grown an impressive women's clothing brand that totally fits their personalities, and that purposefully and unapologetically aims to round out their wardrobes. The brand stands out from the crowd without chasing trends or leveraging fast fashion, but rather by producing clothes that customers actually want to wear—and at a price point that's actually accessible. In this conversation we explore the trappings of their celebrity-adjacent upbringing, how the effects of nepotism have impacted their journey for better and for worse, and how Favorite Daughter has become one of the hottest new brands on the Nordstrom sales floor. Thanks for tuning in to episode 89. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Share your Nordstrom experience, good or bad, by giving us a call and leaving a voicemail at 206.594.0526, or send an email to nordypodcast@nordstrom.com to be a part of the conversation! Gwyneth Paltrow has firmly shut down any suggestion of a feud with Meghan Markle. , making her views on the matter abundantly clear. Appearing on the terribly titled *The World's First Podcast* with Erin and Sara Foster, Paltrow addressed persistent rumours, stating bluntly, "You know what I won't be at this point in my life? I won't be a pawn in some drummed-up, triangulation of women feud for your (effing) clickbait." , "Leave us out of it. Don't do that. I will not stand for that." "I wish Meghan nothing but the best. Like, it's so great what she's doing. I'm proud of her. Every woman deserves to go into anything they want to do." "I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes. Every podcaster dreams of saying those magic words: “This show is brought to you by…” But for many creators, sponsorships feel like a far-off goal - something reserved for those with big audiences, fancy video setups, or industry connections. And the result? Talented hosts with powerful content hesitate to pitch themselves, assuming they're not “ready” yet.In this episode, I sat down with Justin Moore, sponsorship coach, creator, educator, and author of Sponsor Magnet. Justin has helped creators - from niche YouTubers to newsletter writers - land over a million dollars in sponsorship deals. And he's here to share a perspective that might completely change how you think about monetizing your podcast: you don't need massive numbers to make sponsorships happen. You just need the right mindset, the right strategy, and a more creative approach to what you're offering.Chapters:00:00 – Intro: Why Most Podcasters Feel Sponsorships Are Out of Reach01:45 – You Don't Need Big Numbers to Get Sponsorships (Here's Why)04:30 – The Sponsorship Continuum: How Your Pitch Changes As You Grow07:15 – Niche Shows Win: How Small Audiences Can Land Big Deals10:10 – How to Pitch Brands Using the R.O.P.E. Welcome back to Women and Children First, where we dive into the science, policies, and practices that shape the health of our families and communities. Today, we are honored to have Dr. Tasha Stoiber, a leading scientist at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), whose work is at the forefront of protecting public health from environmental contaminants. Dr. Stoiber is a distinguished environmental scientist dedicated to understanding the impact of chemical exposures on public health. Dr. Stoiber earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She furthered her expertise through postdoctoral research in the ecotoxicology of nanoparticles in human tissues at the University of California, Davis. She brings a wealth of expertise to the conversation on how exposures to harmful substances, such as PFAS, heavy metals, and endocrine disruptors, can affect human health, especially in vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. Currently, as a Senior Scientist at EWG, she focuses on researching contaminant chemicals in consumer products. At EWG, she plays a critical role in translating complex scientific research into actionable knowledge for consumers and policymakers. Her efforts help drive regulatory change and empower individuals to make safer choices for themselves and their families. Whether it's uncovering hidden contaminants in food, advocating for cleaner drinking water, or guiding parents on reducing toxic exposures, Dr. Stoiber's work is reshaping how we think about environmental health. Dr. Stoiber has contributed significantly to scientific literature, with publications addressing critical issues such as the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water and freshwater fish. Her research has shed light on the widespread contamination of these "forever chemicals" and their potential health risks. Today, we'll explore the pressing issues surrounding chemical exposures, how they influence childhood development and long-term well-being, and, most importantly, what we can do to protect ourselves. Join me as we tap into Dr. Stoiber's deep knowledge and practical insights on creating a healthier world for the next generation. Dr. M
