There was a brief news on 11th November, 2021 that Evergrande, the second largest real estate developer in China, has officially defaulted on its bonds. It was unable to make the required interest payments of $148 million in time. Although there was a follow up to that news that they met a deadline to pay overdue interest on three US-dollar bonds before their grace period ended, a report said Thursday, signalling it had averted another potential default and triggering a rally in their shares. Evergrande was up 8.4 percent in Hong Kong morning trade. But what exactly happened with Evergrande and what led to this situation that it is in right now? #14 - Evergrande: Is it 2008 all over again?

Have you heard the news? Facebook is reportedly changing their name to signal that they are not a social media company but a Metaverse company. The change could be announced at the company's annual Connect Conference on October 28th or earlier than that. Facebook has already announced plans to invest $50 million as part of its efforts to create a ‘responsible' metaverse. It also plans to create nearly 10,000 new jobs in Europe as part of its ‘metaverse' ambitions. That brings us to the question - What's The Hype with the Metaverse? But due to today's ‘content' overload and the unnecessary hype around things, it becomes difficult to cut out the noise and get to the bottom of what is happening around us. That's where this podcast comes in. Acting as a supplement to our newsletter, What's The Hype? by Perfunktory aims to break down trending subjects as perfunctorily as possible. But what does Perfunctory mean? It means an action that is carried out without real interest, feeling, or effort.
