Join us this week as we welcome the Americana band, Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches. New York City's Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches are likely the only band today infusing elements of Gullah-Geechee and world rhythms with folk traditions, Americana, New Orleans influences, and 1920s jazz. The forthcoming sophomore album, "Get Us Out Of Fearland", due June 15 2018, builds upon the multicultural exuberance that made the band’s debut album, "Very Next Thing", a transcendent breath of fresh air. Highlights of "Get Us Out Of Fearland" include the playful 1920s verve of “I Don’t Need No Glasses,” the warm lilting embrace of “I Wish The World Knew Why,” the organ-driven, gospel-tinged “Dandelion” (featuring special guest vocalists, Stephanie Rice and Charenee Wade), and “Soar,” an inspirational song filled with optimism, determination, and perseverance. The band members include: Nick Russo - guitar/banjo/resonator/composer/band leader, Betina Hershey - voice/guitar/composer, Emiliano Valerio - cajón/percussion, Miles Griffith - voice/composer, and Dr. David Pleasant - percussions. We will talk to them about their upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at their music, feature their latest songs, and ask them to share their message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches at http://banjonickaru.com/ and spread the word. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.

Well, they say that everything old is new again - that holds true for Banjo Nickaru & the Western Scooches, who have combined elements of country, bluegrass, western swing, rockabilly, and Dixieland jazz. The result is an infectious blend of styles that will get you dancing. They’ve just issued a new EP called The Very Next Thing, and from the band we talk with both Nick Russo, who plays guitar and banjo, and Betina Hershey, one of the singers. Both Russo & Hershey are also in the Hot Jazz Jumpers, so we talk the differences in both bands. Plus, Hershey tells the story about how the two met, and eventually got married (also turning out the ironically titled “I Don’t Believe in Love”).
KAIA KATER is the new soul of traditional music. Born of African-Caribbean descent in Qubec, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: one her familys deep ties to Canadian folk music in her Toronto home; the other the years she spent learning and studying Appalachian music in West Virginia. The songs on her new album Nine Pin are fueled by her rich low tenor vocals, jazz-influenced instrumentation, and beautifully understated banjo, and theyve got as much in common with Kendrick Lamar right now as they do with Pete Seeger. No wonder Rolling Stone named her a new country artist you need to know. BANJO NICKARU & WESTERN SCOOCHES are NYC based band that bring everyone together for a high-spirited 1920's New Orleans style jamboree with their fearless melting pot of rhythmic banjo, slide guitar fused with Gullah-Geechee tambourines, beautiful female country lead singing and harmonized calypso vocalizations. Their brand new album is Very Next Thing. WoodSongs Kids: Giri and Uma Peters are award winning multi-instrumentalists siblings from Nashville, Tennessee.
