KAIA KATER is a brilliant and accomplished musician from Canada who plays Appalachian banjo. After learning in the mountains of West Virginia, Kater toured extensively, performing at venues and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom, including a performance at the Kennedy Center,  Grammy Museum, tributes to Pete Seeger, the Newport Folk Festival, and Carnegie Hall. STELLA PRINCE is a new generation folksinger from New York, now in Nashville. Described by Nashville Scene as the artist “carrying the banner for a new generation of folk musicians”, Stella's goal is to bring folk music to a new generation, describing her sound as “Gen Z Folk”. She recently made history as the youngest performer at this year's Tin Pan South. Stella's EP became the #2 Most Downloaded record, the only folk album, solo female performer, and one of the only independent releases to do so, charting in the Top 20 on the Alt Country Charts. It was also played on BBC and NPR's “All Songs Considered”. WoodSongs Kids: Elle Hack & Ellinor Pogue met at the Kentucky Opry and started singing harmony together.

In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the incredibly talented Carolyn Kendrick—singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and all-around creative powerhouse. We dive into her musical journey and influences and get the inside scoop on her upcoming album, Each Machine. Carolyn and I chat about how technology and AI are shaping the music industry, the essential role rhythm plays in songwriting, and the unique collaborative spirit of the fiddling community.  She also opens up about her creative process, the concept behind her new album, and her experiences at Berklee's American Roots program. This conversation is a deep dive into where traditional meets modern and how community shapes the arts.Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. After many happy years on the road as a side musician, Kendrick has blossomed as a solo artist since issuing her debut EP, Tear Things Apart, in 2020. Heralded as “hauntingly lovely” (Paste Magazine), you won't want to miss a Carolyn Kendrick live performance. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project, The Page Turners. She has shared the stage with beloved artists such as Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Aoife O'Donovan, Kaia Kater, Hannah Read, Margo Price, The Clements Brothers, and Jacksonport. She has played festivals such as Newport Folk Festival, Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, Savannah Music Festival, and won awards such as the Freshgrass ‘Best Duo' Award, The Fletcher Bright Award, and was the Fall 2023 Composer In Residence at the University of the Pacific. In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddle scene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts You're Wrong About (Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and You Are Good. Her forthcoming album, Each Machine, is a collection of traditional and original political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast You're Wrong About. These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship. The first single, The Devil's Nine Questions, is available for pre-order now and will be released October 1st, 2024. The full album, both physical + digital copies, as well as an accompanying zine of behind-the scenes photography and essays, will be released 12.6.24 on High Occulture Records. To learn more about Carolyn, please visit carolynkendrick.com.Thank you for tuning in! Kaia Kater has learned her craft through the influence of a diverse group of musical heroes, ranging from Herbie Hancock to Rhiannon Giddens. She recently turned her lens simultaneously inward and outward, to confront difficult truths and injustices – personally, historically, societally, and made them into album titled Strange Medicine. CKUA's Grant Stovel caught up with Kaia shortly after the album's release, as she was entering the summertime festival season. And she's very much a child of the Western Canadian folk festival experience.   Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer The Hidden Track podcast is a CKUA production and made possible by the generosity of our donors. Believe it or not, Rhiannon Giddens isn't the only black banjo player turning heads in Americana Music. Kaia Kater's first album in six years is out and the likes of Rolling Stone, No Depression and more are giving it glowing marks.  She's not just turning out a unique sound and a very different take on how the banjo plays into new music, but Kater is also chiming in on representation of people of color in bluegrass, country and Americana music. This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) dig in with her to talk about that, her background growing up in Canada, the culture shock of going to college in West Virginia and collaborating with the likes of Allison Russell, Aoiefe O'Donovan and Taj Mahal on her new record and a lot more.  Falls also shares his experience at Railbird Festival in Lexington, Ky., in June, which included a new worship-like status of Marcus King. They also discuss the list of top 12 all-time grossing live music acts and the lack of intimacy in stadium shows.  Plus, as always, Frank and Falls share their Pickin' the Grinnin' recommendations for music  you should check out. Black History Month is celebrated every February in the United States. The precursor, Negro History Week, was created in 1926 when the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History chose the second week of February. This coincided with the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, celebrated together in the Black community since the 19th century. President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month in 1976. Our theme music for this week's program is “Thelonious” by Thelonious Monk. We'll continue with Eric Bibb, Tarika, Blind Blake, Kaia Kater, Rhiannon Giddens, and explore many other voices, too. Part One of our celebration of Black music … this week on The Sing Out! Plus, Kaia Kater tells the story behind her new song, “The Internet,” and how a funny song can be just as meaningful as a serious one.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Songwriter and banjo player Kaia Kater joins me on the show this week.I've seen Kaia's artistry grow over the years as she's been involved in festivals and events like Folk Alliance that I've been a part of and seen her perform quite a few times. Kaia started showing up on the scene 10 or 15 years ago and has put out some incredible music in the last 7 or 8 years. She's a really interesting banjo player, well versed in traditional string band and old time music which she studied in depth at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia, but also takes the instrument in her own direction using the trad stuff as a launching pad. On her Dad's side, Kaia has a strong Grenadian connection, which is where he's from. She did some hefty research into his life and the music from that island, and that all comes out in an incredible way on her album from 2018 called “Grenades”. Go have a listen to that as well as the one before called “Nine Pin”. She has a brand new record that is stellar, but it's not out yet and she's not exactly sure when it'll be out, so we talk about it a bit too, as well as her writing process, and how she approaches recording her own music. Kaia will be touring alot this year and next and I highly encourage you to go see her. Full-disclosure, Kaia and I don't get to talking about Composing for Film and Television until about 20 minutes into this conversation. We start by discussing the early stages of her career learning clawhammer banjo from the legendary Mitch Podolak, attending various Old-Time music camps in West Virginia, and growing up in Canada's Folk Festival scene. Then, in 2018 after 2 years of extensive touring, Kaia suffered a panic attack mid-show and came to the realization that she needed to make a change.  After attending some community classes on how to use Ableton, the freedom of self-producing and composing opened up a new world, and she began to explore opportunities in Film and TV, putting her career on a whole new path. Fast-forward to today, Kaia has just been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for ‘Best Original Song' for the series 'The Porter'. She is a Juno Award-nominated and Polaris Prize-longlisted songwriter of Grenadian-Canadian heritage. Her voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from CBC, BBC Music and Rolling Stone. Her recent film work includes the CBC/BET+ TV Emmy-nominated series 'The Porter', and she has had a song placed on Global TV's Mary Kills People. Kaia has toured internationally, including notable performances at NPR Tiny Desk Concerts and Carnegie Hall. In 2021, Kaia took part in the Slaight Music Residency at the Canadian Film Center and released a new single ("Parallels"). Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Bright Siders over Zoom audio! The Bright Siders is a unique musical collaboration between Nashville-based Americana songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn-based child psychiatrist Kari Groff, MD. Together, they create music with the purpose of helping children connect to their emotions. Ten years in the making, their carefully crafted, star-studded debut album A Mind of Your Own arrives just when the world needs it most, and as the importance of mental health resurfaces. Releasing on January 21, 2021 via Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album invites listeners to think deeply about empathy and  self-compassion as they navigate the beauty and complexity of their emotional lives.Together with an inclusive cast of inspiring vocalists – including Ed Helms, The War & Treaty, Gaby Moreno, Punch Brothers, Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids), Oh Pep!, Kaia Kater, and more – Andreassen, Dr. Groff and their co-producer, Chris Eldridge, offer a profoundly empowering collection of songs and skits for elementary age children and the grownups who love them. Kari Groff, MD is an accomplished physician running a child psychiatry practice in Brooklyn, New York.  Her side passion has always been as a fiddler and songwriter.  Through her clinical work as a child psychiatrist, Dr. Groff has seen first-hand how powerful music can be in helping children to process emotions. As a young doctor, she started writing her own material based on the issues brought to her by her patients, weaving psychiatric advice within her catchy lyrics.Kristin Andreassen has toured world stages as a singer, clogger, square dance caller and educator, first with the Maryland-based Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, and then with oldtime stringband Uncle Earl (Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, KC Groves) and “folk noir” trio Sometymes Why (Ruth Ungar, Aoife O’Donovan). As a songwriter, Andreassen’s achievements include the kids’ radio hit “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color for Your Eyes”. It was a chance meeting between Andreassen and Dr. Groff that launched The Bright Siders as a shared musical endeavor. The songs and skits, along with Dr. Groff’s “Try this at home…” suggestions contained in the liner notes, are all intended to set the stage for conversations with children about common emotional themes and experiences they’re likely to have while growing up. “More than anything, we encourage parents, educators, and caregivers  to listen to this music with their children. Where does the real magic of this album happen? It’s in actively listening to the music with children and then talking about what they experience in response to the music,” says Dr. Groff.“Children should understand that their feelings are valid and important to the adults around them,” she continues.  “And parents can help children live rich and meaningful lives by helping them accept and understand their emotional experiences with compassion – even if they, as parents, cannot directly fix a problem that is making them anxious or sad.”  With playful lyrics and contagious melodies, this music cuts through the monofocus of our pandemic-centered times, offering a practical guide to raising emotionally intelligent children who, one day soon, will take those skills with them as they experience the beauty in growing up and becoming themselves. We want to hear from you! Her ability to take advantage of space and silence within her music allows her voice to really fill out her arrangements and compositions. The tone she gets out of her banjo is extremely balanced, too! Effortless and moving, I highly recommend you check out Kaia Kater! #9: Libby Decamp Another banjo player, I found Libby on both Gems on VHS and Western AF. While Kaia Kater's banjo playing was more nuanced, Libby picks more aggressively on her banjo. Her voice has a slight waver as well when she sings, which I totally love. The lyricism in her songs is also remarkable., #8: Kassi Valazza The word that comes to mind when I think about Kassi Valazza is cinematic. Definitely more in the genre of Country than folk, Kassi just evokes a spaghetti western vibe in her music. She paints sonic pictures in such a vivid way that I'm kicking myself over not listening to her sooner in my musical career! #7: Melody Walker A multi-instrumentalist who I've seen in a variety of different settings, Melody Walker strikes me as an incredible songwriter and artist. I want to spotlight the lyrical prowess she displays on almost all of her compositions. In fact, she ended up writing a song with Molly Tuttle! #6: Kiki Cavazos A voice like something between Bob Dylan and Loretta Lynn, Kiki Cavazos is a piercing songwriter that emulates the old-school country style of Hank Williams Sr. She's also a Montana resident, so I'm doubly sad that I haven't discovered her work sooner! She has such an old-school sound that sounds straight from a bygone era. #5: Rhiannon Giddens One of the most talented, powerful songwriters on the banjo today, @Rhiannon Giddens is an expressive instrumentalist and a noteworthy songwriter. The tone that she conveys with her playing is just mind-blowing. On top of being a musical dynamo, she is an activist who I believe is steering the acoustic music community in the right direction. Her father, Don West, was likely a big influence on her as she grew up. He had been a southern poet and a coal mine labor organizer. This is episode 17 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song. Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for compiling the list of artists and songs for this feature. Her family's politics were a lifelong influence. Hedy West wrote liner notes for 1967's Old Times and Hard Times, from self-imposed exile in London. They were a personal statement on the corrosive effect of the Vietnam War. She wrote "We'll be controlled by manipulated fear". While living in Stony Brook, New York, in the late 1970s, she donated her time and talents to numerous benefit concerts for unfashionable causes — as did her fellow Appalachian-on-Long-Island, Jean Ritchie. And in 1976, she made her way north to share her music in Saratoga Springs. Recent Caffe Lena discovery, Kaia Kater comes to us from Canada. She grew up around folk music, her mother produced many music festivals while Kaia was growing

In this episode we're featuring Kaia Kater and a nod to the Brothers Adderley. First up, the new roots and blues of Kaia Kater. She's Canadian born, yet embodies all the musical treasures the Americas have to offer. From bluegrass, folk, and jazz, to MC's like Rakim and Kendrick Lamar, it all comes together in this burgeoning artist's style of songwriting. Along with Ms. Kater, music columnist Bao Le-Huu (This Little Underground/The Orlando Weekly) joins in the conversation.  Speaking of taking in all the sounds of America (and the world at large in this case), we pay tribute to the brothers Adderley: Cannonball and Nat. With a body of work that left no stone unturned, these two did it all with a sense of musical adventure and accessibility with a bit of show-biz gleen. All types of great music passed through the brothers' horns, ranging in themes to folklore, Broadway, afrobeat, astrology, religion, and psychedelia. Along the way the left a trail of bonafide classics - Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and Sack O' Woe - not to mention a who's who of talents they helped to foster, from Joe Zawinul, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Yusef Lateef, and more. SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF: St. Elizabeth and Nine Pin by Kaia Kater (from the album "Nine Pin" on Mavens Music). Kaia started her career early, crafting her first EP Old Soul (2013) when she was just out of high school. Since then, she’s gone on to release two more albums, Sorrow Bound (2015) and Nine Pin (2016). Her most recent album weaves between hard-hitting songs that touch on social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement (“Rising Down,” “Paradise Fell”) and more personal narratives speaking to life and love in the digital age (“Saint Elizabeth”). Nine Pin won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Stingray Rising Star Award and sent Kaia on an 18-month touring journey from Ireland to Iowa, including stops at The Kennedy Center, Hillside Festival and London's O2 Shepherd's Bush. For her third album, Grenades (October 2018, Folkways/acronym Records), she took a decidedly different direction, choosing to lean into a wider array of sounds and styles, in order to convey a wider array of emotions and topics, most notably her paternal ancestry.

Kaia Kater was born into the folk music scene. Her mother is a festival director and she learned to play clawhammer banjo at age 11 from Mitch Podolak (founder of the Winnipeg Folk Festival). Now, the Canadian native is studying the Appalachian folk traditions in West Virginia and connecting with the work of a range of artists - from old-time musician Dom Flemons to hitmaker Kendrick Lemar. A star in the making, Kaia stopped by the studios of Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York to play a few songs from her debut release, 'Sorrow Bound.'

Young banjo players Jerron Paxton and Kaia Kater hail from places that are pretty far removed from the American South. But as they learned their instruments and connected with banjo mentors, they found old-time music well beyond its reputed home region. Paxton and Kater both started out playing bluegrass music. “I was a little fat boy in Compton with a straw hat and overalls trying to be like Earl Scruggs,” Paxton recalls. The popularity of bluegrass made it easy to find, even in California. The same held true in Kater’s hometown, Toronto, Canada. But for each of them learning Scruggs-style picking was just a gateway drug. Soon, Paxton and Kater were asking themselves the same question that motivates many old-time music revivalists: what else does the banjo sound like? To take up this question, Kater traveled from her native Canada to the heart of the North Carolina mountains. “I went to the Swannanoa Gathering, which is a fantastic, fantastic camp. And I was really influenced by

KAIA KATER is the new soul of traditional music. Born of African-Caribbean descent in Qubec, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: one her familys deep ties to Canadian folk music in her Toronto home; the other the years she spent learning and studying Appalachian music in West Virginia. The songs on her new album Nine Pin are fueled by her rich low tenor vocals, jazz-influenced instrumentation, and beautifully understated banjo, and theyve got as much in common with Kendrick Lamar right now as they do with Pete Seeger. No wonder Rolling Stone named her a new country artist you need to know. BANJO NICKARU & WESTERN SCOOCHES are NYC based band that bring everyone together for a high-spirited 1920's New Orleans style jamboree with their fearless melting pot of rhythmic banjo, slide guitar fused with Gullah-Geechee tambourines, beautiful female country lead singing and harmonized calypso vocalizations. Their brand new album is Very Next Thing. WoodSongs Kids: Giri and Uma Peters are award winning multi-instrumentalists siblings from Nashville, Tennessee.

The birth of the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering at Appalachian State University has become the stuff of folk music legend. “Of course it was an academic event,” Dom Flemons notes of the conference, “but it was also based on the idea of confirming that you weren’t the only one out there.” Once launched, the Drops’ music spread like wildfire. With it emerged a new public appreciation of the African American roots of old-time, bluegrass, and country music.

Kaia Kater has just released her sophomore recording “Nine Pin”. Recorded in just one day in Toronto, with Chris Bartos, the producer of Kaia’s debut “Sorrow Bound”, Nine Pin is a concept album that takes as its inspiration the Black Lives Matter movement and Kaia’s own experience growing up as a person of colour in North America – but also touches on more personal source material such as love and loss. And it’s an album that gives Kaia free reign to push her own boundaries using her old-time Appalachian banjo as the leaping off point for powerful lyrical songs that show maturity way beyond her years. We caught up with Kaia at home in Toronto. For more information, visit http://kaiakater.com.
