Art lover Bill Adams was delighted to visit the Kaddatz Galleries to see Charles Beck: Rarities and Masterpieces. The Kaddatz and other Fergus Falls venues have been celebrating “A Year of Beck” throughout 2023, marking what would have been the Minnesota artist's 100th birthday. Charles Beck (1923 – 2017) created woodcuts, paintings, and other artworks that often celebrated the landscape of Ottertail County in west central Minnesota. This is the final show in the series, and it runs through Dec. 23. The pieces in this exhibit include works from private collections that would not otherwise be available, spanning from Becks' college drawings to his final piece. “I would say that Charles Beck's works are quintessential Minnesota pieces,” says Adams, who was thrilled to encounter new works of Beck's at this show. “Yesterday when I was driving home from Fergus, I looked through some bare trees and in the background was a blue sky with white clouds above it, and I thought to myself, ‘Wow, that looks just like a Beck piece.'” Don Fortner has retired as music director from First Presbyterian Church in St. Cloud. Still, he wants everyone to know about the wonderful music series that Granite City Folk Society hosts at the church and at Bo Diddley's Deli every month. Fortner was involved in connecting the Granite City Folk Society with the church as a venue during Covid, and he's delighted to see how the First Fridays concert series continues to grow in popularity. He says the 100-year-old church has excellent acoustics.  Folk artist John Gorka will perform December's First Fridays concert, Dec 1 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Rupert Wates will be at Bo Diddley's on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Find the concert series schedule here.  Oil painter Laura Lindquist of Stillwater says her favorite holiday show each year is “Letters to Santa,” a one-woman show that had her “hooting and hollering” when she first saw it last year. Actor Janelle Ranek transforms into 10 characters, each writing letters to Santa. Sitting in the intimate setting of Bryant Lake Bowl, Lindquist was astounded by Ranek's versatility and humor. Each year's show is different.  This year's version, “Letters to Santa: Shaken, Not Stirred,” runs at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis from Dec. 2 – 23.

"My Good Friends" The Ohio-born David Wilcox is one of our great treasures. Over the course of his career the singer/songwriter has put out nearly 25 perfect albums, including 1989's How Did You Find Me Here, 1991's Home Again, 2003's Into The Mystery and his brand new one, My Good Friends.Bringing to mind Nick Drake, John Gorka, Milo Binder and Joni Mitchell, Wilcox is one of those rare singer/songwriters whose body of work has no dip in quality. My Good Friends is a perfect example of how Wilcox just keeps crushing it. From the retrospective romp of the title track, to the stirring Just A Trace Of Light to the deeply moving album closer This Is How It Ends, Wilcox has never sounded better. Observational, compelling, and wise, Wilcox's work is always punctuated by an artful blend of delicacy and strength. His resume' is a long one, but some highlights include playing Carnegie Hall, opening for the Indigo Girls, and being on the cover of Acoustic Guitar magazine. www.davidwilcox.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

In 2021 I saw that John Gorka, was performing a virtual concert—so I bought tickets, set up a video projector, and watched him in my living room with my wife and my two boys.  It was a moment of light in a dark time.  So, when it came time to put together Restoring Memory: A COVIDCalls exploration of the first 2 COVID years, I took a chance and reached out—and well, he's here! From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania.  Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) was a powerful source of education and encouragement early in his career, and he won the New Folk Award in 1984 at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector's edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John's greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. Many well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O'Connell. John has played all over the USA and Europe at hallowed venues like Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage.

Kelli Foster Warder of Theater Latte Da recommends going to see a musical fitting for Valentine's Day. It's Bucket Brigade Theater's “Till Death: A Marriage Musical.” The show tells the story of two married couples stuck together in one cabin. One couple is reevaluating their marriage, while the other appears caught up in that honeymoon glow. The result, Warder said, is “hilarious and insightful and a really great night.” The 10-year-old production's performers are all married couples in real life, including Jeremiah and Vanessa Gamble, who co-wrote the music and lyrics. Warder said she's seen the show several times over the years and gets something new from it each time. The final four shows of the run are Friday through Monday at Art House North in St. Paul. The production is in-person with reduced audience capacity and masks required. St. Paul actress and writer Greta Grosch is an equity actor, but it's community theater that she's excited to share this week: Theatre in the Round stages “Marjorie Prime” starting this weekend. Set in the near-future, 85-year-old Marjorie has a handsome young man in her life. That “man” is a hologram of her late husband, imbued with artificial intelligence so that he can feed Marjorie the stories of her life as she loses her memory. The heartfelt play by Jordan Harrison is full of plot twists that take the audience on a journey. The play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2015, and it was made into a movie in 2017. Courtesy of Katie Sondrol Actress Katie Wodele (Tess) and actor David Denninger (Jon) rehearse for Marjorie Prime at Theatre in the Round. Grosch said she's thrilled to see Theatre in the Round emerge through the pandemic to celebrate its 70th season this year. “Marjorie Prime” runs Friday through March 6. Masks and proof of vaccination or negative COVID test are required. Pamela Potter Langley loves to support her local arts scene in Zumbrota, and she's thrilled that a Minnesota musician she has admired since the ‘80s will be coming to her town for a concert. Folk singer/songwriter John Gorka's long career has spanned 11 albums and a collector's edition, with performances across the globe. Don't see video? Click here: “John's music just keeps aging beautifully,” said Potter Langley, “and some of the lyrics are, for me, as pertinent now as they were back in the ‘80s when I listened to some of the songs for the first time.” Potter Langley said she's traveled far to hear the iconic singer perform so she feels lucky that she can walk a few blocks to the historic State Theatre in Zumbrota to enjoy this show with friends. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Masks are required in the theater unless eating or drinking. The State Theatre in Zumbrota celebrated its 100th anniversary last October.

COVID-19 has brought the entertainment industry to its knees and artists of all stripes are struggling just like the rest of us but really how are they doing? What is life like now for the working musician? Join our hosts Ellen Quale, Emily Metcalfe and River Scholl as they talk with artist and musician Dulcie Taylor about the trials of creating during a pandemic. Dulcie Taylor learned a hard music lesson at an early age – don’t leave your ukulele unattended in a porch chair at the beach. Some clueless teenager can sit on it and smash it to bits. The demise of her ukulele was a tough moment for ten-year-old Dulcie but that Christmas her Mother bought her a guitar and Taylor’s lifelong love of singing and songwriting began. In hindsight, a grown-up Taylor sees the smashed ukulele as something of a blessing in disguise…after all, she has shared the stage with a long and impressive list of artists, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Asleep at the Wheel, Guy Clark, John Gorka, and Kathy Mattea. - source dulcietaylor.com And some disclaimer stuff: No guarantee is given regarding the accuracy of any statements or opinions made on the podcast or website. Even the River Runs Out of This Town". Escuchar audio

A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee's fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres. In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts.  The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.” In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O'Hara Songwriting Performance Grant. www.facebook.com/jamesleebaker www.twitter.com/jlbakermusic www.instagram.com/jamesleebaker www.soundcloud.com/jamesleebaker www.youtube.com/jamesleebaker www.jamesleebaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Find The Song Writer's Gig on iTunes and Stitcher   James Lee Baker was born in Amarillo, Texas with music in his veins. His mother played guitar, his father played drums, his grandmother wrote Gospel music and his grandfather was a concert pianist.  James took the inspiration from his family and began working to play music and create his own musical identity.                       He began participating in open mics in his late teens and created a song catalogue that resulted in his first album being “Saturday” released when he was 18 years old.   His early sound was rock and pop driven but then he started hearing talents like John Gorka and became interested in the singer/songwriters genre.  The real spark came when he heard a song from the soundtrack of “Me, Myself & Irene” called “The World Ain't Slowing Down” by Ellis Paul.    James moved to Denver in 2009 and continued writing and developing his sound.  The ensuing years were filled with hard work, frequent gigging and continuing down the singer/songwriter path.    Having met Ellis Paul and following his music more closely, James decided to study with him and was mentored by Ellis for roughly a year in 2017.   I met James in 2017 at Ellis Paul's New England Songwriters Retreat and he immediately distinguished himself as one of the real special talents attending the event.  At last year's retreat, James started off one of the mornings by playing an amazing song, “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County”.  He tells about his grandfather and father with such clear memories that you are drawn in and captivated.   Enjoy this episode as James closes it by playing “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County” and “Leave the Saving Souls for Later”.   Find James and his music at www.jamesleebaker.com

The world traveler has performed internationally with artists like Melissa Etheridge, Edward McCain and John Gorka. Drew’s songwriting ability is amazing and I could go on and on about his musical accomplishments, but after we started talking I realized the interview and Drew was about so much more. Drew brings insights about life. He’s been through some crap and has come out the other side walking with a limp, but still walking. He questions life, religion and societal norms. He doesn’t see black and white, but lives in the gray and living in the gray, I believe, is the catalyst for his artistic excellence. Drew also makes custom furniture in his studio in Ada Michigan and like all of the art he creates, it’s excellent.

Nominated for a 2014 New England Music Award, Kate Callahan, Connecticut's “Best Singer-Songwriter 2013” has three albums including her recent release Two Doors, which was featured on WNPR's Where We Live.  Callahan's music feels soulful and she's unapologetically optimistic in concert. WNPR host Colin McEnroe praised a recent performance, saying, “Kate Callahan is the only performer I've ever seen who occasionally seems to be channeling something vaster and far more ancient than herself, something more easily understood by Emerson than by any modern person. Kate's credits include appearances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists Showcase, the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, and the CT Folk Festival. She has opened shows for folk legends Judy Collins and Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul, and Mary), troubadours Aztec Two-Step, John Gorka, Mustard's Retreat, and the late Bill Morrissey. She has also shared stages with folk-rock artists Rachael Sage and Regina Spektor. Stookey calls Callahan "real" and says her lyrics are "Zen-like." Kate joins Take 2 Radio Music for a chat and music on Wednesday, September 3rd at 3pm eastern!

JOHN GORKA AND ELIZA GILKYSON are considered two of the best contemporary Singer/songwriters touring today. These longtime friends recently teamed up with Lucy Kaplansky to form the super folk group Red Horse. The trio's self titled debut CD was released last year and it became an instant folk classic and a big hit with fans. JOHN GORKA is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who was raised in New Jersey and came out of New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene that produced such songwriters as Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. His award-winning songs have been recorded and performed by such notable artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Mary Black. John has recorded eleven solo albums, six on Red House Records. His latest is So Dark You See. ELIZA GILKYSON is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. The Grammy-nominated artist was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006, she was recognized with 3 Austin Music Awards and 4 Folk Alliance Music Awards, one of which was for "Song of the Year" for her tune "Man of God." Her latest solo CD is Roses at the End of Time on Red House Records. BLITZ THE AMBASSADOR may seem like an unusual booking for WoodSongs at first glance. The Ghanaian-born, New York-based composer, and producer unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes with a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti. All set to swirls of brass, distorted guitars, and the crackle and pop of old amplifiers. However, for his WoodSongs performance, Blitz will be performing a more intimate, stripped down set. Check out his video for "Remembering The Future" to see this talented artist in action as Michael welcomes the show's first hip hop artist and explores the genre's connection to folk music.
