We focus a lot on belonging here at Growing Small Towns, and one of the most important groups (that sometimes gets neglected by traditional community development) is youth. Kids need to feel at home and welcome in our small towns, too, and when our young people are engaged, active, and have good places to hang out with their friends, the effect is like a shockwave in the best way. Today's episode is with the amazing Karen Pifher, who is helping communities support their youth in very real, material ways. And with lots of food, because apparently that's key for kid hangouts. About Karen: Karen Pifher is a powerhouse of heart, hustle, and humor, with a Master's in Community Development, a Business Strategy Certificate from Harvard, and as a member of the international "Board of Experts" (what's that- check it out online and reach out with questions). As the founder of Creating Community Consulting, Karen has become a go-to force for turning bold ideas into thriving, people-centered projects. She knows firsthand what it's like to face hardship — as a teen mother, Karen learned resilience, grit, and the power of community early on. Today, she channels that experience into her mission to create stronger, more connected places where everyone belongs. Her secret weapon? A wicked sense of humor, a bias for action, and the ability to make strategy feel exciting — even fun! Outside of her work, Karen is a devoted wife, mom, and outdoor enthusiast, happiest when she's paddling a river, hiking through the woods, or wrangling life's chaos with laughter and love. Creating Community Consulting isn't just a business; it's the evolution of Karen's lifelong passion for community, innovation, and change — built on grit, late nights, and a lot of coffee. She's living proof that small-town roots and big dreams can shake up the world, one project (and one punchline) at a time. In this episode, we cover: Why Karen decided to get involved in making communities better places for youth The whole amazing story behind CornerStone Community & Youth Center How Karen and her organization help other small towns become great places for kids Resources Mentioned and Projects They Serve: Creating Community Consulting and AI Grant Writer tool: https://www.creatingcommunityconsulting.com/ CornerStone Community & Youth Center: https://www.cornerstonefrazee.org/ Wannigan Park: https://wanniganpark.com/ Clay County Family Resource Center: https://claycountyfrc.com/ Economic Development in Frazee Small-Town Shout-Out! This one is from our friend Jerome from Platte, South Dakota, and we're shouting out two things that he shared with us. The first is the community's multi-church youth group: the community recognized the benefit of having one large group of kids coming together rather than a bunch of little ones, and we love this (and the kids do too!) The second is the restored Lyric Theater. It's a beautiful building that was in rough shape, which was purchased by an incredibly generous individual who restored it and brought it back to life, proving that when people care, big things happen. A big high-five to Platte for youth, collaboration, and restoration! New Segment Alert! We think some of the best parts about radio shows and podcasts are listener call-ins, so we've decided to make those a part of the Growing Small Towns Podcast. We really, really want to hear from you! We're introducing two new parts to the show: “Small town humblebrags”: Call in and tell us about something amazing you did in your small town so we can celebrate with you. No win is too small—we want to hear it all, and we will be excessively enthusiastic about whatever it is! You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things. “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. Call in and tell us about your problem, and we'll solve it on an episode of the podcast. Want to remain anonymous? Totally cool, we can be all secretive and stuff. We're suave like that. If you've got a humblebrag or a tricky people problem, call 701-203-3337 and leave a message with the deets. We really can't wait to hear from you! Her intellect, presence and breadth of talent was inspiring. Her disposition and mellow nature was calming. She was a lovely interview and an honor to sit down with. Listen as this German-born, California-raised and Champaign-rooted, talks how music influenced and shaped her education, her love life, her career and her family dynamics. Julie's main instrument is piano, however: conducting, directing, teaching and most recently heading the Lyric Theater with husband and previous guest, Nathan, at the University of Illinois is her main gig. While growing her career and resume, she also raised five children! Saying she is impressive would be selling her short. Lovely, kind and generous of her time and gifts would help fill the dictionary of adjectives that define this renaissance woman. I'd like to thank this episode's sponsor, OpenCase. It can be easy to miss your neighborhood bus stop in New Orleans. That's because a lot of stops don't have a sign. More than a year and a half after the city overhauled its bus routes to be more rider-friendly, virtually none of the 2,000 or so stops in the city have new, permanent signage. The Lyric Theater on the night of May 27, 1982 was historic. The Baltimore Symphony patrons were there to say goodbye—the Symphony’s concert this night was scheduled to be its last in the Lyric. Succeeding concerts would be at the newly opened Meyerhoff. But the goodbye proved to be far more poignant than any had expected…
JANIVA MAGNESS has one of the preeminent voices in contemporary American roots music. After Magness added a 2016 Grammy nomination to her 26 Blues Music Award nominations — with seven wins, including Entertainer of the Year — she might have taken at least a short rest on her laurels. Instead, she raised the bar for herself. Magness’ 14th album, ‘Love Is an Army’, is a brilliantly crafted bridge between the past and present, blending the echoes of classic soul and Americana music with timeless themes of love and the very contemporary sound of protest. THE REVEREND SHAWN AMOS is Los Angeles-based soul brother number one. The Rev’s distinctive blend of black roots music, R & B, and stripped down rock n’ roll brings a bracing, soul-deep musical experience to audiences starved for authenticity, for connection. His mission to preach joyful blues to the world continues on his third album ‘The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down’. He calls the album a collection of 21st century Freedom Songs. WoodSongs Kid: Emily Reed is a 15-year-old ukulele player and singer from Frankfort, Kentucky.
ASHLEY CAMPBELL is a triple threat songwriter, singer and banjo virtuoso. Following in the footsteps of a famous parent is never an easy path, and Ashley, the daughter of music legend Glen Campbell, initially pursued dance and acting. But when Ashley was asked to learn banjo for a part in a play, a spark was lit and her calling was found. Soon Ashley was studying with banjo luminary Carl Jackson (her godfather and longtime member of Glen's band) and mastering her technique. Ashley co-wrote all thirteen songs on her debut album 'The Lonely One', chronicling a personal journey - by turns bold, reflective and brazenly funny - of a young woman grappling with grown up choices. LILLIE MAE has been singing and playing on stages across the country since she could stand on her own two feet. ‘Forever and Then Some’, her much anticipated Third Man Records debut, sees the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaving her own extraordinary experiences with the myriad strains of Americana to create a breathtaking song cycle of romance and struggle, solitude and adventure. Produced by multiple GRAMMY® Award-winner Jack White III at Third Man Studio in Nashville, the album affirms Lillie Mae as a remarkably gifted musical storyteller, a bright new star that’s been here all along. WoodSongs Kid: Kate Ward is a fifteen-year-old fiddler from Kuttawa, Kentucky. Kate is a staff fiddler at the Kentucky Opry and she has competed in numerous fiddle across the country.
ROSIE & THE RIVETERS vintage-inspired folk anthems paint a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. The Canadian trio’s unmistakable red lipstick and pin curls may be deceiving, but don't be fooled - this not a throwback band. Their 2015 breakout record, ‘Good Clean Fun!’, brought them sold-out tours, awards, nominations, a performance for British royalty and national airplay in Canada. Their latest album, ‘Ms. Behave’, is a collection of gritty, sultry songs that feature playfully defiant lyrics and confident talk-back harmonies that empower and challenge. KYLE DILLINGHAM is a world renowned fiddle sensation and Oklahoma Musical Ambassador. Dillingham has over 20 years of international experience with performances in 36 countries. The Enid native picked up the violin when he was nine, and eight years later, he gave two featured performances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. On stage with his band Horseshoe Road, the group's eclectic style rooted in Bluegrass and Western Swing is full of surprises. WoodSongs Kid: Olivia Moore and Jack Lynch are both twelve-year-old and from Frankfort, Kentucky. They’ve been playing together since grade school.
CHRIS BARRON is the acclaimed Spin Doctors frontman. A four-album hot streak in the ’90s established them as a heavyweight of the era with 1991’s five-times-platinum Pocket Full of Kryptonite’ ruling the airwaves with hits “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes”. Barron is now a veteran approaching 50, living in a world changed beyond recognition, compelled to write the music that chronicles the here-and-now. His latest ‘Angels and One-Armed Jugglers’ is the the culmination of a lifetime’s craft and a record both contemporary and classic. KIM RICHEY is a legendary Nashville songcrafter. This two-time Grammy-nominated artist is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender, poetic and aching with life’s truths, Kim’s songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. After a nearly five year hiatus, Richey returns with her eighth studio album, ‘Edgeland’. The term “Edgeland” is defined as the lost zone between urban and rural environments, a concept which mimics Richey’s constant fluctuation between the rigid genre definitions of country and Americana music. WoodSongs Kid: Aisley Stuebs is an aspiring sixteen-year-old Singer/Songwriter from Lexington, Kentucky.
Elizabeth Bougerol and Evan Palazzo met when they both answered a Craigslist advertisement in 2007 for an open jam session and bonded over their love for such jazz greats as Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday. In 2014, their self-titled debut album, The Hot Sardines, was named by iTunes as one of the best jazz albums of the year. Since then, the band has performed at renowned music festivals in Montreal and Newport. They have performed with an 80-piece orchestra at the Boston Pops, headlined on the Turner Classic Movie Cruise, and sold out more than 25 shows at the iconic Joe's Pub at the public theater in New York City. Their 2016 album, French Fries and Champagne, featured a duet with Tony Award-winning actor, Alan Cumming. Jazz may be their passion, but it's also their business. For Evan and Elizabeth, going to work almost always means leaving their families to board an airplane for an extended trip. Not only do they have to put on a great performance each and every time they go on stage, they're also responsible for employees, promotion, logistics, profit, and loss. In this conversation, we learn how the band jumps from playing small jazz gigs in New York to touring performing art centers around the world, and what you can learn from an airline pilot about being a good band leader. We pick up the conversation backstage at The Lyric Theater in Stuart, Florida. We’re just getting started with this podcast, so your support is super important.
