Have you had to work extremely hard to get what you're dreaming of? Joining Sarah Grynberg this week is Australian swimming legend Stephanie Rice, renowned for her remarkable achievements in the pool. A triple Olympic gold medallist, Steph made history at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she broke world records in the 200m and 400m individual medley events and contributed to Australia's victory in the 4x200m freestyle relay. In this heartfelt conversation, we recount the highs and lows of Steph's incredible career, what it's like to swim a race as an Olympic finalist, and her battle with mental health. Steph bravely opens up about the darkness of media scrutiny and how she found a newfound love in religion. Steph has a new collaboration with Ancestry DNA, exploring how genetics may influence athleticism. This powerful conversation highlights the mental health struggles and hard-wrought journeys many Olympians face to find success. If you have dared to dream, to reach the pinnacle of your sport or industry, and have felt isolated along the way, this episode will remind you that even those with the most stoic facades and impressive achievements have their own messiness behind the scenes. May this episode shine a light on the limitless capabilities we hold within us and how we alone carry the keys to unlocking their power. In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I chat to the fabulous and fearless Stephanie Rice. You probably know her as the former Olympic swimmer, but she has undergone something of an evolution in recent years, and there's much more to this powerful woman. Stephanie is a conduit for sharing her story and showing others that challenges can become possibilities, and she is brilliant at leveraging her huge social media following and the community she has built there to help others.  However, as Stephanie will tell you, she has a love/hate relationship with social media. One of the major values she leads her life by is authenticity, and in this we are very aligned. I personally believe that human connection is the best connection, and Stephanie and I discuss how she prioritises business partnerships that align with her truth and also value human connection.  We discuss self-love, and the process of learning to surrender your desires to the universe, and being open to receiving what comes your way. Stephanie shares  how many people assume she is a naturally happy person, but in fact, she says that she has worked hard to become the happy, positive person she is today. Steph also opens up about her daily practices, including cultivating gratitude and appreciation every single day, and the mantra she recites every morning upon waking. Stephanie Rice truly is a woman who is grounded in her authenticity, and who is doing a stellar job of building longevity in business by virtue of knowing and being herself. I took many learnings away from this conversation, and I hope that you do too. Much love, Tory xox  [1:16] Stephanie discusses the support she received from Jackie Frank, former editor of Marie Claire Australia, when she was at the height of her success as an Olympic swimmer.    [2:30] She opens up about the dark period she experienced following her swimming career, and where she's at with this now, in addition to what encouraged her to share her struggles publicly when the time was right.   [5:39] Stephanie talks about feeling like a ‘nobody' after she retired from swimming. We discuss the difficulty of transitions, particularly when moving on from a career that we have linked our self-worth and identity to.    [07:06] Finding self-love and self-acceptance is still a process for Stephanie. She takes time to read, meditate and sit with her emotions when they come up, and this helps her to meet herself.    [9:45] Stephanie tries to build rituals into her daily life, such as meditating to connect with her intuition and receive guidance.   [11:40] She talks about the difficulty of learning to surrender, especially being a driven, successful woman and the dichotomy of going after things versus surrendering and being open to receiving.    [13:36] Stephanie shares the values that allow her to step into her intent and purpose on a daily basis, including integrity, authenticity and making sure her partnerships involve a mutual exchange of energy.   [15:03] Steph is working on being secure in herself, and is enjoying a new phase of feeling self-assured from a solid internal place, where she doesn't need external validation like she once did.    [18:45] Stephanie shares her love/hate battle with social media, and how she values one-on-one in-depth conversations over surface-level connections. She opens up about how when her energy changed, she noticed that her following mirrored her evolution by becoming much more positive, too.    [20:44] She talks about the joys of positive connection via socials, plus the pressures of social media from a business perspective, including what potential partners look for and the difficulties of being assessed via the analytics of her Instagram account.    [25:30] Stephanie shares her morning rituals, including telling herself every morning, “Something amazing will happen today.”    [29:10] Stephanie opens up about being ready for a relationship and creating a family of her own, and talks about what she's looking for in a partnership, as well as the process of surrendering her desires to the universe.      Want to know more about Stephanie?  Website: www.stephanierice.com.au Instagram: @itsstephanierice   Are you ready to take a powerful step forward in business and in life? The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is swimming coach Michael Bohl. Michael Bohl has been a swimming coach for 33 years and counting. He has been the coach of Australian swimmers who have been on the podium at every summer Olympics between the 2008 to 2021. Some of his most notable athletes include 5 time Olympic Gold medalist Emma McKeon and 3 time Olympic Gold medalist Stephanie Rice. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal and in 2010 was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to swimming . Michael is the type of leader that puts you at ease as soon as he says hello. He has an infectious energy that draws people to him; and he couples this with a style that emphasizes personal accountability and the importance of character when it comes to elite performance. He is also able to zoom in and focus on the small things, and then step back and and engage with each athlete on a vision for their future. He is just a terrific bloke, and in this wonderful interview some of the highlights for me were: His view that failure is the fertilizer of success. How swimming coaching is a combination of art and science. And The analogy he uses about a stage coach and the horses that drive it to illustrate what is required in preparation for a major event. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com

In episode 110 of The Physical Performance Show Brad Beer has a conversation with Stephanie Rice - Triple Olympic Gold Medallist. Stephanie Rice took gold in three events, her only three events in Beijing, the 200m IM, the 400m IM and then was part of the Australian 4x 200m freestyle relay winning team. Not only did Stephanie win 3 gold medals across the one week of swimming but every time she took to the pool in Beijing she broke a world record. Leading into the Beijing Olympic Games at the Australian swimming trials, Stephanie had broken the world record in both the 400 and the 200m individual medley. However her American nemesis Katie Hoff had bettered the mark at the US Olympic Trials just before the Olympic Games. During this episode Stephanie shares how she handled the pressure despite her coach's instructions to not break the world record. We talk about how Stephanie managed to pull herself together after winning her first gold medal which was also incidentally Australia's 400th Summer Olympic Games Gold Medal and the first Olympic Gold for the 2008 Australian Team. To recover from being unwell to then get ready for the 400 IM. We discuss why Stephanie knew that she wanted to be an Olympian from the age of 3 years, how Susie O'Neill inspired Stephanie. We talk about what it took leading into Beijing, 4 years of grind and hard work plus all the years before that and then the 4 magical days in Beijing. Why Stephanie was not interested in working with a sports psychologist, why getting up at 4:37am was the perfect time. And then we talk about the tough years following Beijing for Stephanie after she underwent shoulder surgery and leading into the London Olympic Games preparing for that with just half of the swimming volume she would have done. We talk about how Stephanie manage that and explore Stephanie's life beyond the swimming pool and what the last 6 year journey has included. There's so much in this interview and Stephanie Rice is an Australian sporting legend.   Listen in as we delve into the following: Mindset Discussing how important habits are. How Stephanie first got started in Swimming Coming from a sporty family Favourite Achievement Using a Sports Psychologist Setting the world record How Steph stays motivated Steph's challenges during her career Steph's struggle with injury and the three surgeries Racing against the men Performance Round Mantra Being in the zone Best Advice Magic Mentoring Program Physical Challenge – Have a meat free/vegan day once a week and exercise five days a week. New York City's Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches are likely the only band today infusing elements of Gullah-Geechee and world rhythms with folk traditions, Americana, New Orleans influences, and 1920s jazz. The forthcoming sophomore album, "Get Us Out Of Fearland", due June 15 2018, builds upon the multicultural exuberance that made the band’s debut album, "Very Next Thing", a transcendent breath of fresh air. Highlights of "Get Us Out Of Fearland" include the playful 1920s verve of “I Don’t Need No Glasses,” the warm lilting embrace of “I Wish The World Knew Why,” the organ-driven, gospel-tinged “Dandelion” (featuring special guest vocalists, Stephanie Rice and Charenee Wade), and “Soar,” an inspirational song filled with optimism, determination, and perseverance. The band members include: Nick Russo - guitar/banjo/resonator/composer/band leader, Betina Hershey - voice/guitar/composer, Emiliano Valerio - cajón/percussion, Miles Griffith - voice/composer, and Dr. David Pleasant - percussions. “You can't rest on your laurels. You have to be constantly evolving.”Michael KlimWhat exactly does it take to become an Olympic legend?Every elite athlete is devoted to mastering their craft. Some even strike gold on the world's largest stage. And every once in a while, we witness standout performances in consecutive Olympiads. But it's the rare specimen that can compete at the very highest level of sport across three Olympic Games to retire a legend.Meet Michael Klim.Awarded the medal of the Order of Australia (sort of like being knighted), Michael is indisputably one of Australia's most famous and celebrated athletes in a land that revers competitive swimming. A three-time Olympian with a slew of World Records, Olympic Gold Medals and World Championship titles to his name, he was part of a star-studded group of swimmers that took Australia back to the top of swimming in the late 1990’s & aughts — a group that included standouts like Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Keiren Perkins, Leisel Jones, Libby Trickett, Stephanie Rice, and Susie O’Neill. One of the stars of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Michael is perhaps best known as instrumental in Australia’s thrilling 4x100m relay victory, unleashing a world record lead off swim to win his first gold on the first night. Michael’s achievements also include:* '96 Atlanta Olympics: Bronze, 4x100m Medley Relay* '98 World Championships: 4 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze* '99: 2 World Records (100m Butterfly)* '00 Sydney Olympics: 2 Gold, 2 Silver & 2 World Records* '01 World Championships: 2 Gold & 1 World Record* '04 Athens Olympics: 1 Silver* '07 World Championships: 1 GoldQuite the successful entrepreneur after hanging up his budgie smugglers (click here for the Cambridge Dictionary definition), Michael is now the founder and managing director of a skin care line called Milk & Co. and conducts life optimization retreats under the banner Chosen Experiences. This is a conversation about Michael's extraordinary life as a lauded athlete, entrepreneur and parent. We cover his mental and physical success equation: the hows and whys behind his ascension to the very peak of elite Olympic performance. What was required of him to not just win, but keep winning. We discuss how he approaches high pressure scenarios. We cover his approach to remaining fit and how he parents his children. And we conclude with how he transitioned from decorated Olympian to successful entrepreneur — a pivot most professional athletes struggle with upon retirement. But most of all, this is a conversation about what is required to live a life of mastery, with more than a few critical takeaways you can implement into your own life.A personal hero of mine for as long as I can recall, I followed Michael's journey from the beginning. So it was a thrill for me to finally connect with him for this deep dive into his career and what makes him tick.I sincerely hope you enjoy the conversation.Full video version >>> http://bit.ly/klimvideoIf you are enjoying the video versions of the podcast, please subscribe!Peace, Plants & Pools!Listen, Watch & Subscribe See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
