Show Notes: Scott Spiezio   The Hardest Comeback What happens when you reach the pinnacle of success—and still find yourself fighting for your life? On this episode of the Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T., Linda Mitchell sits down with two-time World Series champion Scott Spiezio for a powerful conversation about what happened after the championships, the applause, and the fame. Baseball fans remember Scott for his unforgettable three-run home run in Game 6 of the 2002 World Series, helping the Anaheim Angels complete an incredible comeback on their way to the franchise's first World Series championship. He later captured another World Series title with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006. But Scott's hardest comeback happened away from the baseball field. In his new memoir, The Hardest Comeback, and documentary, SPIEZIO, Scott opens up about his battle with addiction, financial collapse, arrests, broken relationships, and the loss of the identity he had built around baseball. Linda and Scott talk candidly about hitting rock bottom, recovery, forgiveness, faith, surrender, and what it takes to rebuild your life when you believe you've fallen too far. They also explore a powerful question: What if the greatest victory of your life isn't the one everyone applauds? Sometimes we believe we know exactly how our lives are supposed to unfold. We make our plans, chase success, and try to control the outcome. But Scott's story is a reminder that there can be something much bigger on the other side of surrender, and that our hardest chapters can ultimately become the ones that give someone else hope. In This Episode, You'll Hear About Scott's unforgettable 2002 World Series moment What was happening behind the scenes while he appeared to be living the dream Losing his identity after professional baseball His battle with addiction and the road to rock bottom The shame surrounding addiction, arrests, and broken relationships Learning to forgive yourself after making painful mistakes The role faith and surrender played in his comeback Why The Hardest Comeback was so difficult and necessary to write What Scott believes being a "champion" means today His message to anyone who believes they have fallen too far to come back Scott's memoir, The Hardest Comeback, is available now wherever books are sold. His documentary, SPIEZIO, premieres theatrically beginning September 10 in St. Louis, around the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Cardinals' 2006 World Series championship, and will later stream on Re-Discover TV.   Sound Bites "I visualized this moment every night." "I started drinking to deal with depression." "Cried out to God and He heard my cry." Cory is fresh off headlining The Comedy Connection, and the guys break down the stress that comes with headlining a comedy club, the easiest job in the building, and the woman who actually CRIED during Cory's show. That leads into a bigger conversation about comedy right now: Are comedians moving up too fast? What happens when people start getting opportunities before they're actually ready for them? And apparently… everybody's a headliner now. Then Cory explains how SportsCenter may have officially jumped the shark with its SummerSlam coverage—although their coverage of the 2020 Mullet Championships was completely acceptable. Brian talks about his recent trips to a local wrestling promotion and the unexpected star of the show: an absolutely incredible grilled cheese. Plus, the guys determine what hairstyle Cory should have if he had hair and revisit the questionable hats he used to wear. #WickedFunnyPodcast #ComedyPodcast #StandUpComedy #Comedians #Podcast

Destination Terror
Peoria State Hospital - The Man Who Cried at His Own Funeral

Destination Terror

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2026 34:54

Four thousand people are buried on a hill outside Peoria, Illinois, and most of them don't have names — just numbers, pressed into small flat stones. For eight years, every time one of them went into the ground, a man was there to cry. He couldn't speak. Nobody ever learned his real name. The staff called him Old Book, after the only thing anyone knew about his past, and they loved him. He dug the graves of strangers and then wept for them under an elm tree at the edge of the field, because no one else was coming. Then in 1910 they buried him — and roughly four hundred people watched him cry at his own funeral. This week on Destination Terror, we're going to Peoria State Hospital, and it isn't the asylum story you're expecting. There were no cruel doctors here. No barbaric experiments. The man who ran this place took the bars off the windows and fought the Illinois legislature over the word "incurable." The horror on this hill isn't cruelty. It's grief — thousands of people who died unclaimed in a place that was genuinely trying, and went into the ground under a number anyway. The Graveyard Elm. The coffin that came up empty. And a hospital superintendent who risked his entire scientific reputation to write down what four hundred people saw, for one reason: so somebody would remember the old man who cried at every funeral.   #DestinationTerror #Eeriecast #TrueHaunting #HauntedHistory #PeoriaStateHospital #BartonvilleAsylum #OldBook #GraveyardElm #HauntedIllinois #AbandonedAsylum #GhostStories #Paranormal #TrueGhostStories #HauntedPlaces #Illinois   EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror ________________________________________ SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ ________________________________________ SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. ________________________________________ DISCOVER MORE HORROR: http://eeriecast.com/ https://www.carman-carrion.com/ ________________________________________ MUSIC CREDITS: Music and sound effects provided by: ElevenLabs Learn more about your ad choices. In other news of the day, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticizes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a 'socialist communist' and vows to enforce immigration laws in sanctuary cities, protecting the homeland, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul met with community activists and immigrant groups yesterday to assure them she has their back amid threats from President Trump's border czar about sending in more U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as the World Cup kicks off, and the President announced yesterday that he's nominating Jay Clayton - the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York - for the role of director of national intelligence. Brian Kilmeade, Joe Tacopina, K.T. McFarland, Mike Huckabee & Victoria Coates join Sid on this Friday installment of Sid & Friends in the Morning. Learn more about your ad choices. Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud said: Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, asked me to recite the Quran for him. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, how could I possibly recite to you what was sent down to you?” He replied: “Yes, I love to hear it recited by someone else.” So I recited Surah al-Nisaa until I reached this verse: “How, then, will it be when We bring forward a witness from every nation, and bring you as a witness against them?” He said: “Enough.” I looked up and saw his eyes filled with tears.

Most people spend their whole lives chasing a version of success that looks right on paper and still leaves them empty. That is the conversation at the center of Episode 539, and it is one of the most honest hours this table has produced. Candis Quinney is back and she brings the moment that started everything. She was in her closet, stressed, overwhelmed, burnt out, with everything she had worked hard for, and still broke down. The house was there. The marriage was there. The kids were there. The pool was there. And none of it was enough. That moment did not break her. It built a movement. Candis is done watching women settle for a version of life that looks good from the outside and feels hollow on the inside, and she is calling everyone to a higher standard. ET picks up where Episode 538 left off, going deeper into what it actually felt like to release the need for control and what changed in his life and his marriage when he finally did. He also brings one of the most tender moments in recent S2S history, talking about going back to heal his mother and realizing she went through everything he blamed her for carrying. Karl's Kalm Down segment delivers one of the most practical frameworks this show has produced. Access and alignment are not the same thing. Just because something good comes to you does not mean it is yours. Make your decisions on alignment, not access. With Jemal away, CJ steps in with a sanctified session and does not hold back. God wants more for you than you want for yourself. Everything you do not have is because you are still operating below the level God designed for you. Stop shrinking. The episode also includes the announcement of ET and CJ's debut book "We Is Greater Than Me," now available for preorder on Amazon, and ET pulls out his GED on camera for the first time, earned February 9th, 1989, out of Lansing, Michigan. The certificate that started everything. If you are a woman who has ever smiled through something that was breaking you, Candis is building something for you. If you have ever felt like your life looks right but something is still off, this table sees you.
