ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jul 28, 2020 Chris and Dave from the Mandatory OT and IWW join Breht to cover the fascinating and crucially important history of the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in American history and the largest armed uprising in America since the Civil War. In this powerful episode, we dive deep into the largest labor uprising in U.S. history—the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain. This was no metaphorical struggle: 10,000 coal miners, armed and organized, rose up against brutal exploitation, corporate tyranny, and state violence in the heart of Appalachia. It's a story of working-class militancy, raw courage, and revolutionary spirit—one deliberately buried and whitewashed by history. We bring it back to light. Here's a trumpet player we've heard from before. He was a favorite of my dad's. He's also a favorite of mine. He's loud and powerful. He plays at just below a blatting level, but keeps in control with some of the most intricate music. He performed at halftime of the first Super Bowl and owned his own New Orleans jazz club. So get ready to hear a musician who could shift gears to play many styles of music, even being critiqued for that skill, in Volume 226: Hirt's Dixieland Horn.
In this series, Jeff and Andy look at historical events that took place on this day.Today in history, one of the worst tornado outbreaks in American history hits Dixieland, Mr. Las Vegas is born, and a man that was the all time winningest coach for many years passes away. This series is brought to you by the great Boss Shot Shells.

Normal service resumes with a podcast devoted to tributes celebrating the still-obscure pianist and composer Herbie Nichols. Nichols spent his truncated career in the shadow of Thelonious Monk (a big guy who cast a big shadow). He released roughly four albums in his lifetime and spent much of his career scuffling in Dixieland bands, but those initiated into his cult realize he was a truly gifted and unique composer. These tributes encompass a fairly straight ahead quintet date, a more adventuresome guitar trio, a solo piano recital, and a vocal set with brand new lyrics (and titles!) for many of Herbie's songs. Eric T. Johnson – HERBIE NICHOLS VOL 1; Enrique Heredia Trio – PLAY HERBIE NICHOLS; Simon Nabatov – SPINNING SONGS OF HERBIE NICHOLS; Fay Victor – LIFE IS FUNNY THAT WAY.
Blair Crimmins didn't just find his sound—he fought for it. From fronting rock bands in Atlanta to leading a full seven-piece ragtime jazz ensemble, Blair's journey has been anything but conventional. After a life-altering accident and some soul searching, he rediscovered the sounds of New Orleans jazz and Dixieland swing and embraced a vision that defies industry norms. Catch this episode of Southern Character for an exclusive look into Blair's relentless pursuit of authenticity, the challenges of bringing vintage jazz to modern audiences, and the fun story of how music led him to his wife, Davi Crimmins. Tune in for a conversation about passion, reinvention, and the power of a good horn section.

Justin and Bec forego a typical main topic this week, opting instead for effectively two main topics with absolutely massive, iconic Songs of the Week! Bec's Song of the Week is "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and she explores the roots of it from the 1965 Italian ballad "Io che non vive (senza te)" through to Dusty Springfield's hugely successful English adaptation and eventually to Elvis's famous performances of it in the 1970s, across his 1970 Nashville sessions, the concerts filmed for "That's The Way It Is," and even much later and deeper into the decade. Justin then traces the lineage of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's legendary "Trouble," originally featured in the 1958 film "King Creole," but increasingly recognized over the years as one of Elvis's most enduring recordings, symbolizing the myth of him as a rebellious rocker, most prominently recently featured in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis." We go deeper, though, touching on the history of stop-time in Dixieland jazz and, most influentially on Leiber/Stoller, in Muddy Waters's "Hoochie Coochie Man." Understanding the history behind that song, the hoochie coochie itself, and the way Trouble has become representative of expressions of both masculinity and femininity unlocks a deeper sense of the song's significance as one of the all-time masterpieces of Elvis's entire recorded works. Oh yeah, and the duo react to the first trailer for Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

Hey Slaycaters, we're back with another crazy case that you just have to hear to believe. It takes place in Suwannee, Florida — an interesting part of South Florida — right near the famous Suwannee River (from the famous Old Folks at Home song that also happens to be Florida's State song despite the original version being completely racist) But we digress… This case involves the Rainey Family: Dad David Rainey, his wife Cindy and their two 20-something year old sons. Joining them on this Dixieland vacation was one of the son's girlfriends, as well as a family friend and Cindy's Boss from her job as a realtor. Everything was going fine — until David went missing. What happens next will have you asking all kinds of questions — many starting with WTF??? But isn't that always the way on Slaycation? Enjoy and stay safe out there! Two new nonfiction books explore the impact of cultural forces in the world of music. First, a number of musicians, including B.B. King, Ed Sheeran, Jewel and Tracy Chapman, began their careers as street musicians. Cary Baker's new book Down on the Corner explores the history and influence of busking through interviews with performers of all kinds. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's A Martinez about some lesser-known musical street legends, like oil drum player Bongo Joe and neo-Dixieland band Tuba Skinny. They also discuss the early historical origins of busking and the way technology has changed the practice. Then, a new book on De La Soul contextualizes the hip-hop group within the modern musical canon. In High and Rising, Marcus Moore discusses how the band created a space for Black alternative culture, appealing to fans of rap, but also of jazz and punk. In today's episode, Moore speaks with Martinez about how De La Soul's popularity has persisted, despite the group's difficult trajectory. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
In this episode of the Broadway Drumming 101 podcast, we're thrilled to have the legendary Cubby O'Brien, one of the original Mouseketeers from The Mickey Mouse Club! Cubby takes us back to his early years, sharing how his musical journey began with his father teaching at a Sun Valley, California music school. He describes being part of a Dixieland band made up of young musicians who performed at various venues around Hollywood, from Rotary Club events to charity shows for the Screen Actors Guild. During one of these performances, his drumming skills caught the attention of Disney producers, leading to his audition for The Mickey Mouse Club—a gig that launched his storied career.Cubby also shares insights from his remarkable journey as a drummer, having played with legends like Ann-Margret, Lawrence Welk, and Bernadette Peters. His extensive Broadway career includes shows like The Producers, Hair, Oh! Calcutta!, and touring as the drummer for The Carpenters. Throughout the episode, Cubby offers anecdotes and lessons from decades of experience in the entertainment world.Subscribe to hear Cubby's stories, tips, and reflections from a lifetime in music and show business!Carl "Cubby" O'Brien, born July 14, 1946, in Sun Valley, California, is an accomplished American drummer and former child actor, best known as one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club (1955–1958). After his time with Disney, Cubby pursued his true passion for drumming, performing with bands around Los Angeles, including a two-year stint with Spike Jones, which opened doors to major acts. He went on to work with legendary artists such as Ann-Margret, Shirley MacLaine, and Diana Ross, and spent ten years touring with The Carpenters after meeting them on The Carol Burnett Show.Cubby's prolific career extends to Broadway and television, with notable performances in productions such as West Side Story, Hair, The Producers, and Gypsy. Announcer Gene Hamilton introduces this tongue-in-cheek satire of highbrow symphonic broadcasts. Rather than classical music, this show featured traditional hot-jazz (Dixieland) melodies. Hamilton's commentary adds an ingredient of charm to the show.. File will be living in Big Band-Jazz Playlist. Vocalist "Diane Foley"
This is truly an interesting find in my dad's collection. We know by now my dad's love for the Dixieland style of music. So it's not surprising I found this record in the stacks. But what was surprising is that this recording was made by seven musicians that had never played together before. You most certainly can't tell. And they're not exactly household names. So, get ready to hear what it must have sounded like rollin' down the Mississippi River in the late 19th and early 20th century in Volume 195: Delta Dixieland. Jonathan Brenner is an Atlanta-based singer-songwriter who defies easy classification. Described as “somewhere between New York and Nashville,” his music is a unique amalgam of genres, including pop, country, folk, Americana, and jazz. His musical influences include Hank Williams, Sr., Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Cole Porter, Tom Lehrer, and Antônio Carlos Jobim A wildly clever and often epic songwriter with romantic/heartbreaking storytelling, witty social commentary and the weaving of pointed musical fables at the core of his creativity, the Atlanta based musical enigma – currently riding a fresh wave of intoxicating eclecticism via his second album Instagram Success - is so wondrously all over the map that even his promoters have a hard time defining his artistry. Is he pop? His infectious, 70s-esque, jangly brassy, vocal harmony filled romp “Silly Little Habit” screams yep! Is he country? His country accent and plucky steel guitars on “Little Lost Lamb in Dixieland” seem to confirm this, but his hilarious jibes about Southern living make him more kin to the musical comedy aesthetic of chief influence Tom Lehrer. (So maybe that's two genres in one?) Is Brenner folk/Americana? Yeah, and with a little bluesy keyboard and rock guitar twinge on the lyrical, easy to sing along with “Riding That Money Train” (which has some edgy social commentary and the acoustic driven irony laden “Jesus Loves the Poor,” which also has blues flavors and a snazzy jazzy trumpet solo. - Jonathan Widran, THE JW VIBE
It's been a wonderful 6-year run, but it's time to call it a day. So, for this final episode of Same Difference, we go back to the beginnings of Jazz with "Tiger Rag". Join AJ and Johnny one last time, as they listen to and discuss versions of this Jazz standard by The Original Dixieland Jass Band, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Oscar Aleman, The Whiteway Jazz Band, and new-to-us artist Annie and The Fur Trappers. Thank you, everyone, for 6+ swingin' years!
The Dukes had a bad rap among jazz fans by 1961 . . their previous records had been stereotypical "dixieland" novelties with occasional good playing. These 1961/2 sessions feature the Assuntos (Frank, Fred and Jac) along with Jerry Fuller, Gene Schroeder, Jim Atlas, Charlie Lodice and either Jim Hall or Herb Ellis on guitar. Great mainstream dixieland with a vocal feature for Frank Assunto and a broad repertoire spanning dixieland, marches, contemporary Broadway tunes and a folk number or two. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support

We're going to hear two major forces that shaped the world of jazz. Fletcher Hamilton Henderson was a pianist, bandleader, arranger and composer, important in the development of big band jazz and swing music. Henderson was one of the most prolific black musical arrangers and, along with Duke Ellington, is considered one of the most influential bandleaders in jazz history. He helped bridge the gap between the Dixieland and the swing eras, attracting new young talent to the genre. Fletcher Henderson and his band perform on the radio show Jubilee in 1945. "Dizzy" Gillespie was a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. Gillespie became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz in the 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time". You will hear him perform on the show, This Is Jazz in 1960. Details at http://krobcollection.com

rWotD Episode 2596: Muskrat Ramble Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Wednesday, 12 June 2024 is Muskrat Ramble."Muskrat Ramble" is a jazz composition written by Kid Ory in 1926. It was first recorded on February 26, 1926, by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five, and became the group's most frequently recorded piece. It was paired on the flip side with another one of Armstrong's hits, "Heebie Jeebies." It was a prominent part of the Dixieland revival repertoire in the 1930s and 1940s, and was recorded by Bob Crosby, Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, Muggsy Spanier, Chet Atkins, Lu Watters, the Andrews Sisters, Harry James, and Al Hirt, among others. It is considered a part of the jazz standard repertoire.Without Ory's consent, lyrics were written for the instrumental tune in 1950 by Ray Gilbert. After Gilbert protested that he was entitled to share credit with Ory, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers awarded him one-third credit on all performances of "Muskrat Ramble", vocal and instrumental. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:06 UTC on Wednesday, 12 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Muskrat Ramble on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.

A type of music of black American origin characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm, emerging at the beginning of the 20th century. Odd pairing - Assunto founded and led the Dukes of Dixieland which was at the height of its popularity in 1962. These recordings were done for Columbia at the same time as sessions by Herb Ellis and His All-Stars. Ellis was touring with the Dukes (with also included Fred Assunto on trombone, Jac Assunto on trombone and banjo, Gene Schroeder on piano, Bob Casey on bass, Charlie Lodice on drums and on two tunes, Edmond Hall guesting on clarinet) and recorded a mainstream session under his own name featuring Buddy Tate, Ray Bryant and Gus Johnson. Roy Eldridge was also supposed to be there, but when he was delayed and missed the first two sessions, Frank Assunto stepped in, providing some of the best work of his career. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
Viva Pod Vegas is back with Frankie and Johnny, the first non-cowboy period piece in Elvis Presley's filmography! After some long overdue email reads, we welcome Col. Tom Parker back to the podcast to sort our way through some more terrible taglines that miss the mark. We talk about whether or not this is THE Nellie Bly, whether or not the Dixieland music fits the movie, and whether or not the meta approach to the story works in 1966. We discuss Elvis as a degenerate gambler, the Gibson Girl, and “Elvis's bulge.” We try to make sense of the core love stories in this movie, revel in how Elvis movies lean into cinematic cliches, and try to figure out if Frankie and Johnny (the characters) have a happy ending. We retire the “best Elvis song” and are forced to pick a new one. We play our other games and discuss recent Riley Keough projects.
There's to say about this phase of life. I mean, you get to watch people exercise, you get to push a nasty Romulan out of a ship, and ruin your own Dixieland funeral party. What's not to love? Ro Laren and Geordi Laforge get lost in the transporter beam while helping a Romulan science ship that's had a horrible accident in space. The Enterprise thinks the pair are dead, but they wake up, talk to each other and eventually figure it's all about mixing clocking devices with a phase invertor. The Klingon special does a number on the digestion (if they can eat while phased.) But forget all that. This episode is about death. Or Life. One of those, definitely. It's funny and good. AJ Styles was the backbone of TNA Wrestling. Without him in the early days, Total Nonstop Action may not have been as popular as it was. AJ Styles was the one constant in the company, and you knew if he was on the card you would get a phenomenal match! When his contract expired at the end of 2013, it was time to renegotiate. All he wanted to stay in the company was the same amount of money he was getting paid. TNA Management couldn't afford that AJ Styles left the company. However, AJ Styles, working on a handshake deal, would work until the January 9th, 2014 episode of Impact Wrestling. At this time, AJ Styles was TNA World Champion, however, Magnus was also TNA World Champion by winning a tournament. On this episode, the 2 champions go head to head to crown one Undisputed TNA World Champion. AJ Styles and Dixie Carter agreed that that match would be a NO Disqualification Match. AJ knew that Dixie and her group “Dixieland” would try to cost AJ the belt and get him out of the company. Dixie Carter also knew that AJ had friends in the company, so she set up a bunch of backstage attacks and different matches to get rid of all of AJ'S friends before the main event. This would be AJ Styles final match in TNA Wrestling! Plus, there are 2 steel cage matches, The Bromans vs Eric Young & Joseph Park and more! ⦁ Deadlock Discord: https://discord.gg/E4BvR4W⦁ Deadlock Shop: https://shop.deadlockpw.com⦁ Deadlock Patreon: https://patreon.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Twitter: https://twitter.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Instagram: https://instagram.com/deadlockwrestling⦁ Deadlock Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Pro Wrestling: http://deadlockpro.comThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5810608/advertisement
