This week, we're heading down to New Orleans circa 1958 to revisit the soundtrack and recording sessions for the iconic musical drama "King Creole." The Dixieland aesthetic gave Elvis an opportunity experiment, melding his now-signature rock and roll style with a small jazz ensemble, creating a soundtrack LP that had a distinct sound all its own. Although few outtakes remain, the songwriter demos for nearly the entire soundtrack provide insight on how Elvis and the band further developed such classic songs as "Trouble," "Hard Headed Woman" and "Crawfish" into the final forms heard in the film. Bec also takes the opportunity chat a bit about her appreciation for the movie itself, highlighting some of her takeaways from her most recent viewing, and posing questions about the Michael Curtiz-directed film as one of Elvis' best starring roles. For Song of the Week, Justin provides a little insight on what influences may have led Elvis to experimenting at home in the mid-1960s with an early 1950s pop ballad, "My Heart Cries for You." Finally, Bec rounds out the episode with a reflection on the intimacy of the underrated "I Miss You" which was also a home recording of sorts - as it was recorded professionally by RCA in Elvis' Palm Springs home! ATTENTION ADVENTURERS! Presenting almost seven hours of music and amusing announcements from Madame Phoole's Panharmonium live at the 2026 Gardens and Gears Steampunk Faire in Milwaukee's beautiful Mitchell Park Domes Horticultural Conservatory! Recorded live on Saturday, 7 March 2026. The 2026 theme was "Modern Wonders of the World," so sounds evoke the Pyramids at Giza, Chichen Itza in Peru, the Great Wall of China, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, and travel to exotic locales in general, with dashes of bal-musette, vals criollo, tango, and Jazz Manouche, along with plenty of crowd-pleasing Dixieland jazz and Tin-Pan-Alley ragtime piano. The event took place in a giant glass dome, which was connected to two other giant glass domes, each of which contained immersive botanical gardens. The Show Dome, in which Mme. Phoole performed, also housed an exhibit of model trains, the tracks for which wended their way in and out amongst the foliage, so tunes about trains are sprinkled throughout. The cavernous, echoing venue suggests to Madame Phoole a multi-modal station for every kind of steam travel, so the goofy, pseudo-British-dialect announcements interspersed amongst the tunes are themed to H.G. Wells-esque kinds of travel and adventure. Phoole and Tiffany play a lot of Walkabout Mini Golf in virtual reality, so a few of our favorite compositions by Chris Reyman from that game's soundtrack make cameo appearances. Because the States are still steeping in a very 1933-in-Germany zeitgeist, many 1930s tunes performed by Max Raabe & Palast Orchester are played, along with a too-brief dip into Chap-Hop.

The fun of playing some songs is that we just never know what we're going to hear. This George Gershwin piece has been like that ever since Danny Cox brought us better chords for it a year or so ago. Now the song is like a shiny little red convertible parked in the garage just waiting for the next sunny day. You and your buddies pile in, not knowing where you're going, just enjoying the company and the sights and the sounds of each other's laughter. Hop in! We're going for a joy ride!About the SongAs reported earlier, “Lady Be Good” has been a perennial party favorite for more than a century now.Nineteen-Twenty-Four was a watershed year for Gershwin. After spending more than a decade pounding the pavement in New York's Tin Pan Alley, he composed his landmark "Rhapsody in Blue." Then, alongside his brother Ira, George scored his first major Broadway hit, the musical comedy Lady Be Good, which ran for more than 300 performances. The enduring significance of the show's title tune, "Lady Be Good," lies in its rare ability to transcend musical eras. A unique entry in the Great American Songbook, it beautifully bridged two distinct jazz ages, surviving the transition from the loose Dixieland style of the Roaring Twenties to the smooth swing sound of the 1930s.A favorite among jazz legends as diverse as Charlie Parker and Lester Young, the song's rich history also includes interpretations by vocal icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Tormé.For more on the back story of this song, see this earlier Flood Watch entry.More Floodifaction? And if this has you hungry for a little more of the band's jazzier selections, drop by the free Radio Floodango music streaming feature and click on the “Swingin'” Channel.Click here to give it a spin. Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902 Judson Carroll - YouTubeTune of the week:Any Old Time on guitarI show you how to play my version of the Jimmie Rodgers classic "Any Old Time". This is a very unique song in his repertoire, because it was recorded with Louis Armstrong in more of a Dixieland style. I do it as an easy swinging country blues. It is a very fun song to play, with a laid back rhythm that lets you experience a little of the joy these legends shared in the studio when music was less confined to strict genres and bootleg liquor fueled many a great recording.https://youtu.be/bQjQAz28bHsEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

This is a great old tune, and a perfect vehicle for a bluesy/jazzy, fingerstyle break or solo. Rodgers often worked with Dixieland bands and even the great, Louis Armstrong. So, even though he is known as "The Father of Country Music", his songs are equally influential across the genres of traditional American music - blues, country, jazz and rock all owe a huge debt to Jimmie Rodgers and Emmett Miller.https://youtu.be/ffHdRExIGB4Email: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportMy new book: A Daily Catholic Devotional Reflections on the Daily Mass readings January-June, 2026: Caroll, Judson: 9798270034252: Amazon.com: Books https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FWJMD7CLRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

Here's another tune that Danny Cox has brought to us from his decades of lovingly listening to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed's famous recordings. One of Jerry's composition, “Baby's Coming Home” is a standout tune that was introduced on 1974's landmark Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed album. As reported here earlier, Atkins and Reed were not only esteemed guitarists but also good friends who shared a profound musical chemistry. A major figure at RCA, Atkins was instrumental in bringing Reed to the label. The album testified to Atkins' continued endorsement of the younger man's talent, showcasing interpretation of 10 of Reed's unique and often humorous compositions. Chet and Jerry were known for their distinct fingerpicking styles, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Merle Travis and incorporating their own original, complex techniques. This is what attracted Danny Cox to their work when he was still just a teenager learning to pick.About the SongJerry Reed wrote “Baby's Coming Home” around the time Chet was coming up with the plans for his 1974 tribute album. Atkins' rendering of the song is the first track of the disc's B side. Incidentally Jerry himself performed on only two of the album's tracks (”Squirrely” and “Mister Lucky,” and sadly not on “Baby's Coming Home”). However, a few years later, he and Chet did pick the tune together on TV. That wonderful, light-hearted segment was preserved on this YouTube video:A Muppet MomentBy the way, four years later, “Baby's Coming Home” made a curious comeback. This time with a tuba-and-banjo-heavy Dixieland-flavored arrangement, the song was the soundtrack for a sketch called “Lunchtime” during Episode 316 of The Muppet Show. Check this out:More Atkins-Reed Collaboration Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed reminded many fans of Chet's Grammy-winning 1970 Me and Jerry release, an all-acoustic, instrumental album that featured the two buddies teamed up on a range of songs, from country and pop covers to original instrumental workouts.Several decades later, this collaboration was followed by another celebrated joint effort, the 1993 Grammy-winning Sneakin' Around album. Dixieland Veterans My dad loved his Dixieland music. Even when he had no idea who was performing it. This is a perfect album for that mindset, because this budget label doesn't even get all of the tunes listed correctly on the cover and label, let alone tell us who's performing on it. And even though the title of this episode leans toward anonymous musicians, today's technology might have helped. And then again. It might not have. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jul 28, 2020 Chris and Dave from the Mandatory OT and IWW join Breht to cover the fascinating and crucially important history of the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in American history and the largest armed uprising in America since the Civil War. In this powerful episode, we dive deep into the largest labor uprising in U.S. history—the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain. This was no metaphorical struggle: 10,000 coal miners, armed and organized, rose up against brutal exploitation, corporate tyranny, and state violence in the heart of Appalachia. It's a story of working-class militancy, raw courage, and revolutionary spirit—one deliberately buried and whitewashed by history. We bring it back to light. Here's a trumpet player we've heard from before. He was a favorite of my dad's. He's also a favorite of mine. He's loud and powerful. He plays at just below a blatting level, but keeps in control with some of the most intricate music. He performed at halftime of the first Super Bowl and owned his own New Orleans jazz club. So get ready to hear a musician who could shift gears to play many styles of music, even being critiqued for that skill, in Volume 226: Hirt's Dixieland Horn. Normal service resumes with a podcast devoted to tributes celebrating the still-obscure pianist and composer Herbie Nichols. Nichols spent his truncated career in the shadow of Thelonious Monk (a big guy who cast a big shadow). He released roughly four albums in his lifetime and spent much of his career scuffling in Dixieland bands, but those initiated into his cult realize he was a truly gifted and unique composer. These tributes encompass a fairly straight ahead quintet date, a more adventuresome guitar trio, a solo piano recital, and a vocal set with brand new lyrics (and titles!) for many of Herbie's songs. Eric T. Johnson – HERBIE NICHOLS VOL 1; Enrique Heredia Trio – PLAY HERBIE NICHOLS; Simon Nabatov – SPINNING SONGS OF HERBIE NICHOLS; Fay Victor – LIFE IS FUNNY THAT WAY.
Blair Crimmins didn't just find his sound—he fought for it. From fronting rock bands in Atlanta to leading a full seven-piece ragtime jazz ensemble, Blair's journey has been anything but conventional. After a life-altering accident and some soul searching, he rediscovered the sounds of New Orleans jazz and Dixieland swing and embraced a vision that defies industry norms. Catch this episode of Southern Character for an exclusive look into Blair's relentless pursuit of authenticity, the challenges of bringing vintage jazz to modern audiences, and the fun story of how music led him to his wife, Davi Crimmins. Tune in for a conversation about passion, reinvention, and the power of a good horn section.
Justin and Bec forego a typical main topic this week, opting instead for effectively two main topics with absolutely massive, iconic Songs of the Week! Bec's Song of the Week is "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and she explores the roots of it from the 1965 Italian ballad "Io che non vive (senza te)" through to Dusty Springfield's hugely successful English adaptation and eventually to Elvis's famous performances of it in the 1970s, across his 1970 Nashville sessions, the concerts filmed for "That's The Way It Is," and even much later and deeper into the decade. Justin then traces the lineage of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's legendary "Trouble," originally featured in the 1958 film "King Creole," but increasingly recognized over the years as one of Elvis's most enduring recordings, symbolizing the myth of him as a rebellious rocker, most prominently recently featured in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis." We go deeper, though, touching on the history of stop-time in Dixieland jazz and, most influentially on Leiber/Stoller, in Muddy Waters's "Hoochie Coochie Man." Understanding the history behind that song, the hoochie coochie itself, and the way Trouble has become representative of expressions of both masculinity and femininity unlocks a deeper sense of the song's significance as one of the all-time masterpieces of Elvis's entire recorded works. Oh yeah, and the duo react to the first trailer for Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Hey Slaycaters, we're back with another crazy case that you just have to hear to believe. It takes place in Suwannee, Florida — an interesting part of South Florida — right near the famous Suwannee River (from the famous Old Folks at Home song that also happens to be Florida's State song despite the original version being completely racist) But we digress… This case involves the Rainey Family: Dad David Rainey, his wife Cindy and their two 20-something year old sons. Joining them on this Dixieland vacation was one of the son's girlfriends, as well as a family friend and Cindy's Boss from her job as a realtor. Everything was going fine — until David went missing. What happens next will have you asking all kinds of questions — many starting with WTF??? But isn't that always the way on Slaycation? Enjoy and stay safe out there! Two new nonfiction books explore the impact of cultural forces in the world of music. First, a number of musicians, including B.B. King, Ed Sheeran, Jewel and Tracy Chapman, began their careers as street musicians. Cary Baker's new book Down on the Corner explores the history and influence of busking through interviews with performers of all kinds. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's A Martinez about some lesser-known musical street legends, like oil drum player Bongo Joe and neo-Dixieland band Tuba Skinny. They also discuss the early historical origins of busking and the way technology has changed the practice. Then, a new book on De La Soul contextualizes the hip-hop group within the modern musical canon. In High and Rising, Marcus Moore discusses how the band created a space for Black alternative culture, appealing to fans of rap, but also of jazz and punk. In today's episode, Moore speaks with Martinez about how De La Soul's popularity has persisted, despite the group's difficult trajectory. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Jonathan Brenner is an Atlanta-based singer-songwriter who defies easy classification. Described as “somewhere between New York and Nashville,” his music is a unique amalgam of genres, including pop, country, folk, Americana, and jazz. His musical influences include Hank Williams, Sr., Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Cole Porter, Tom Lehrer, and Antônio Carlos Jobim A wildly clever and often epic songwriter with romantic/heartbreaking storytelling, witty social commentary and the weaving of pointed musical fables at the core of his creativity, the Atlanta based musical enigma – currently riding a fresh wave of intoxicating eclecticism via his second album Instagram Success - is so wondrously all over the map that even his promoters have a hard time defining his artistry. Is he pop? His infectious, 70s-esque, jangly brassy, vocal harmony filled romp “Silly Little Habit” screams yep! Is he country? His country accent and plucky steel guitars on “Little Lost Lamb in Dixieland” seem to confirm this, but his hilarious jibes about Southern living make him more kin to the musical comedy aesthetic of chief influence Tom Lehrer. (So maybe that's two genres in one?) Is Brenner folk/Americana? Yeah, and with a little bluesy keyboard and rock guitar twinge on the lyrical, easy to sing along with “Riding That Money Train” (which has some edgy social commentary and the acoustic driven irony laden “Jesus Loves the Poor,” which also has blues flavors and a snazzy jazzy trumpet solo. - Jonathan Widran, THE JW VIBE
AJ Styles was the backbone of TNA Wrestling. Without him in the early days, Total Nonstop Action may not have been as popular as it was. AJ Styles was the one constant in the company, and you knew if he was on the card you would get a phenomenal match! When his contract expired at the end of 2013, it was time to renegotiate. All he wanted to stay in the company was the same amount of money he was getting paid. TNA Management couldn't afford that AJ Styles left the company. However, AJ Styles, working on a handshake deal, would work until the January 9th, 2014 episode of Impact Wrestling. At this time, AJ Styles was TNA World Champion, however, Magnus was also TNA World Champion by winning a tournament. On this episode, the 2 champions go head to head to crown one Undisputed TNA World Champion. AJ Styles and Dixie Carter agreed that that match would be a NO Disqualification Match. AJ knew that Dixie and her group “Dixieland” would try to cost AJ the belt and get him out of the company. Dixie Carter also knew that AJ had friends in the company, so she set up a bunch of backstage attacks and different matches to get rid of all of AJ'S friends before the main event. This would be AJ Styles final match in TNA Wrestling! Plus, there are 2 steel cage matches, The Bromans vs Eric Young & Joseph Park and more! ⦁ Deadlock Discord: https://discord.gg/E4BvR4W⦁ Deadlock Shop: https://shop.deadlockpw.com⦁ Deadlock Patreon: https://patreon.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Twitter: https://twitter.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Instagram: https://instagram.com/deadlockwrestling⦁ Deadlock Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Pro Wrestling: http://deadlockpro.comThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5810608/advertisement
