We are putting The Golden Palace out of its misery...again. This is part two of our Dorothy Zbornak deep dive! Brandy Barber returns, and we wrap it all up in such a way that we never have to revisit this show again! (We hope)
Thanking her for being a friend, Jonathan and David ask dear pal Brandy Barber to come, during Mercury Retrograde of all times, and review the two-parter of "The Golden Palace" when Dorothy returns! Did you know that, in 29 states, you can get fired for being gay? Or that you could be denied housing? It's true! Federally speaking, sexual orientation discrimination IS STILL A THING! UGH and WHY? Then, writer/actresses Brandy Barber and Lyle Friedman join Brent, Eliot and H. Alan to talk about their VERY different, respective experiences as the older sisters to gay brothers. And when it comes to getting boozed up, the guys each talk their personal drink of choice, including the type of wine that doesn't sit right on a "Jewish stomach." Learn more about your ad choices. We jump right in and discuss the mind blowing noise levels of modern restaurants that blast their speakers -- are we old or is this trend really annoying? We share another server submitted story which launches us into a tirade on aristocratic customers. Then we return to the topic of dating your co-waiters and how this always always always goes down in grease fire flames. Fabulous writer, director and actress Brandy Barber stops into the pod to give us the low down on her long career balancing the hi-low serving experience starting in a literal backyard bar decorated as a bait and tackle shop and ending years later as team captain of one of the worlds finest dining destinations in NYC. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/side-work-podcast/support

This week's chat is with comedy writer, Brandy Barber. Now, I don't know that "comedy writer" really says it all. Brandy has written for the hit TVLand sitcom Younger, Amy Poehler's Difficult People, MTV2's Girl Code, and much more. But her path to this place in her career has taken many twists and turns, from higher education, to performing on a Herald team at UCB New York,to directing and developing her own solo show, Bad Bride, which ran for nine months at UCB New York, and toured to iO West, UCB LA, Improv Boston, and even London. She produced and performed in a monthly downtown comedy variety show called The Kissing Booth, which played to sold out crowds during its two year run. She's acted in several award winning web series. She's had original essays published. She's written features for BUST, Glamour, Playgirl, and Time Out New York...I could keep going, but you get the point. For Brandy, what started out as a desire to become an actor, led to many creative incarnations. And what I learned from Brandy's journey is that sometimes what you think you want isn't really what you need. You don't have to hang on to what isn't working. You don't need to make anyone happy, but yourself. And, the only person who should give you permission to do anything...is you.
