"If this task had to be repeated 100 times, would you still want to be doing it?" This is the question I ask every staging CEO, and honestly, it's the one that opened the door to the world of automations for me. In this episode, I am sharing why automations became one of my favorite leadership tools. Not because they're techy or trendy, but because they create clarity, consistency, and real breathing room inside a business. Especially a staging business like ours where there are so many processes and repeats. From my early days building simple workflows to now helping staging business owners at various phases streamline theirs, I've learned that automations don't take away the human side of your business, they amplify it. Afterall, it is when the backend runs smoother and calmer that you get to focus on the work only you can do; the real staging business owner duty. Wonder what automations can do for you? Listen to find out! WHAT YOU'LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE: Why automations are leadership tools and how they shift you from reactive to intentionally designed operations. The first workflow I ever built and why it still runs eight years later The causes of business bottlenecks and how automations support all three. This week, we break down Occam's Razor as a practical tool for faster, cleaner decision-making. From troubleshooting bugs to interpreting teammate behavior, we explore why starting with the simplest explanation first prevents stalled projects, wasted cycles, and unnecessary team friction. What would happen if your team stopped jumping to complex explanations and started solving problems from the simplest point forward? This week on the Cognition Catalog, we explore Occam's Razor through a lens most teams rarely consider: operational clarity. We all talk about avoiding assumptions, but the truth is that most slowdowns in cross-functional work happen because we add assumptions instead of stripping them away. Occam's Razor gives us a mental model to prevent that.I share a real example of how one missed Friday message spiraled into a completely avoidable narrative—all because I skipped the simplest explanation. But this isn't just about communication. The same thing happens in product reviews, sprint planning, bug triage, data interpretation, and even strategic debates. The more complexity we add early, the harder it becomes to make good decisions. We dig into how starting simple doesn't make you naive, it makes you fast. It helps reduce noise, focus conversations, and unlock the clarity teams need to move forward. If you want a smoother workflow, fewer misunderstandings, and fewer dramatic leaps in logic, give this one a listen.Topics:• 00:00 - Introduction: Overthinking Simple Problems• 00:50 - Welcome to Cognition Catalog• 01:18 - Sponsor Shoutout: Mobbin• 02:03 - A Personal Story of Overcomplication• 02:57 - Understanding Occam's Razor• 04:50 - Applying Occam's Razor in Team Dynamics• 06:51 - Practical Takeaways from Occam's RazorTo explore more about the Naive Cynicism, don't miss the full article @ cognitioncatalog.com—Thanks for listening! One of the favorite parts of each year's Magic At The Beach convention in Myrtle Beach, SC, is when the stars take to the stage and share some of their embarrassing, funny and tragic stories from their days on the road. If you have performed long enough and in enough different venues around the world, you will eventually have things go wrong during your travel, your show, during your preparation or tear down, or somewhere along the road. This week we feature some of those people who were highlighted as talent for the 2025 convention and agreed to share some of their stories and even a few about other performers they know/knew. View fullsize Join Charles Bach as he introduces a few of the performers this week that include Dana Daniels, Cody Fisher, Bizarro, Nick Lewin, Howard Blackwell, Joan DuKore, and Jeki Yoo as they share some of their recollections with TSA, working aboard cruise ships, performing at the Magic Castle, and much more. Poet and essayist Kathryn Nuernberger joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about her new collection of lyric essays, Held: Essays in Belonging, which is about symbiotic mutualisms, and grief and joy in an era of worsening climate change. She discusses COP30, the United Nations climate gathering currently underway in Brazil, and considers the global failure to keep warming below 1.5 °C. She reflects on the nature of symbiotic relationships and offers several examples, noting that over several cycles even parasitic relationships might achieve the balance of mutualism. Nuernberger places her work in the larger tradition of climate and nature writing, which previously tended to celebration and in recent years has turned more elegiac, and also talks about writing personal grief in relation to societal grief. She explains new vocabulary developed to address emerging climate concerns and emotions and identifies several concepts that need new words. She reads an excerpt from Held. In "Making a Living and a Life on the Road", Joe Lynch and Dave Nemo, Host of RadioNemo, discuss the blend of essential industry information, driver wellness, and community building that allows professional truckers to find success and connection over a long career on the road. About Dave Nemo Dave Nemo has been the voice of trucking radio for the past 55 years, drawing on his love of music, useless facts, jokes, and history, coupled with the solemn duty to provide reliable weather and road reports with important news and information every driver should have. His career has been through more changes than you'd believe – through AM radio (where in one nine-year stretch he worked for eleven different companies), satellite ratio, and now digital streaming. And through all the changes, he's managed to keep our over the road professional drivers awake, alert, and alive. About RadioNemo RadioNemo is a radio network stemming from 55 years of radio lineage. Spearheaded by founder Dave Nemo, its talk content has been on both terrestrial and satellite radio. Now, it makes its home on the Internet airwaves for everyone. Catch Nemo Nation Mondays at 8a ET with Dave Nemo, Road Gang Radio Tuesdays-Fridays at 8a ET with Jimmy Mac & Lindsay Lawler, and We Should Write Wednesdays at 12p ET with Lindsay Lawler. For more information, visit www.radionemo.com Key Takeaways: Making a Living and a Life on the Road In "Making a Living and a Life on the Road", Joe Lynch and Dave Nemo, Host of RadioNemo, discuss the blend of essential industry information, driver wellness, and community building that allows professional truckers to find success and connection over a long career on the road. The Enduring Voice of the Road: With over 55 years behind the mic, Dave Nemo's career demonstrates the critical importance of a consistent, reliable voice in the isolated world of professional driving. His longevity (from AM radio to digital streaming) illustrates the constant need for connection and trusted information in the trucking industry. More Than Just Talk: The Blend of Entertainment and Safety: The podcast highlights that a "life on the road" requires stimulation and mental engagement. Nemo's use of music, "useless facts, jokes, and history" is a conscious strategy to keep professional drivers "awake, alert, and alive," making entertainment a vital safety measure. Holistic Driver Wellness is Key to Longevity: RadioNemo's content moves beyond trucking logistics to focus on the driver as a whole person. Segments like "Highway to Health" address critical issues such as nutrition, managing conditions like diabetes, and accessing resources for mental health—recognizing that physical and emotional well-being is essential for a successful career. The Need for Community and Connection: For a traditionally solitary profession, RadioNemo fosters a powerful sense of community ("Nemo Nation"). The "Breaker Breaker Backtalk" segment (where drivers share stories and questions) demonstrates that this network serves as a communal watercooler, transforming the isolation of the cab into a shared experience. Navigating the Business of Trucking: "Making a Living" requires staying current on regulations, maintenance, and policy. The network's partnership with advocacy groups like OOIDA (Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association) shows the importance of staying informed on critical issues like broker transparency, safety rules, and legislative changes that directly impact an independent driver's bottom line. Adaptability and the Digital Future: Dave Nemo's transition from terrestrial radio to satellite and now to digital streaming reflects the evolution of the industry itself. The shift to Internet airwaves, on-demand streaming, and podcasting shows that successful professionals must embrace new technologies to maintain relevance and reach the next generation of drivers. Culture and Identity on the Road: The inclusion of culture and storytelling (such as the "Sleeper Cab Library" and We Should Write segments) suggests that a "life" in trucking is about more than miles and freight. These features validate the need for drivers to maintain interests, read, reflect, and engage in deeper conversations that build a rich personal identity despite long stretches away from home. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Erica Hornthal, known as “The Therapist That Moves You,” board-certified dance/movement therapist, award-winning author and founder of Chicago Dance Therapy, to talk about dance movement therapy and how it provides structure and space for people to truly listen to their bodies. Movement is life and our movements influence our thoughts, which influence our behavior, which makes us who we are. Somatic therapy teaches us that the body keeps score and remembers specific incidents in our lives that could create perceived threats where there are none. Learn how to widen the window of tolerance towards adjustment, discover the difference between movement that perpetuates trauma versus dispelling and releasing built up energy that improve your well-being. Erica emphasizes the importance of finding stability and safety in your environment while building a diverse movement vocabulary. There is expression and communication beyond words, and dance as a therapeutic modality and artform is one of the keys to unlocking what's inside you. Remember that we were born movers, not thinkers, so if you want to think differently, you have to move differently. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein, Developmental Optometrist, co-owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C., award-winning author and international speaker, holds powerful and inspiring conversations with her guests in the areas of health, wellness, education, sports and psychology. At just 11 years old, Benjamin Gardner is proving that kindness, creativity, and purpose can spark powerful change. Alongside his dad, Kyle, Benjamin shares how his love for pickleball led to the creation of Stinger Prints—a small business with a big heart. What started as a 3D-printed bag tag has grown into a ripple of generosity supporting the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. Through entrepreneurship, giving, and community, Benjamin reminds us that no one is too young to make a difference and that the best businesses are built with heart. Key Takeaways: Kindness and creativity can turn a simple idea into something with lasting community impact. Giving back creates joy—not just for others, but for yourself. You're never too young to lead with purpose and make a difference. Parents play a key role in nurturing curiosity, confidence, and compassion. The most meaningful success comes from doing what you love and sharing it with others. About Benjamin Gardner: Benjamin Gardner is a 5th grader at Brookwood Elementary School. He prefers to go by Benjamin — though some people call him Ben — as he's currently making the switch. He has three sisters and no brothers, and they're all very nice to him. Benjamin participates in several activities, including choir, volleyball, and band. He's also known for his strong tech skills — his classmates often call him "the techy dude," a nickname he proudly embraces. He is the owner of a small business called Stinger Prints, inspired by the Kansas City Stingers, the National Pickleball League team of Kansas City. Benjamin's dad plays on the team, which helped spark the connection. Through Stinger Prints, Benjamin 3D-prints pickleball-themed bag tags, such as miniature pickleballs or paddles personalized with names. He sells his creations at SW19 at the stadium during "Stinger Week" and is currently working on launching a website. Benjamin's business also gives back — 10% of the proceeds made during Stinger Week are donated to the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. In addition, he assists his dad with youth foundation clinics. Occasionally, his sisters help out at his stand when they're looking for something to do. To begin today's tale, allow me to share a translation of an ancient Chinese joke: Three men were looking at the clouds. One points to a cloud and says, that cloud is shaped like a horse. Another points to a cloud and says, that one is shaped like a whale. The third man points to a mushroom-shaped cloud, and everyone dies. On today's episode: you'll find out just how badly ancient China wanted nothing to do with you; you'll learn about an explosion so large, people miles away had to clear limbs and genitals from their rooves; and you would hear about how at the time, ancient disasters were believed to be Heaven's way of saying your Government sucked. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear about how people were killed in the early development of explosives, including those for whom there wasn't enough left to put a thermometer in; you would hear about the time San Francisco tried to use dynamite to fight fires, and how that didn't go as well as you'd think; and you would hear as I climb upon my pulpit and deliver unto you a sermon on blasphemy and the special place in hell reserved for insurance adjusters. As one supporter who already heard this on Patreon said – "everybody Wanggongchang tonight!"Jesus himself will make a quick cameo in this story, and he will explain how all sins are forgivable – except for the blasphemous use of his Dad's name by insurance adjusters, and how there's a toasty level of hell that awaits them all. Apologies in advance if you work in insurance, but it's better to find out now. The last time we visited China, we watched a sideways rocket launch that performed an incomplete orbit over the countryside before landing nose first onto its own launch centre 22 seconds later. Those were the good old days compared to today's story, which is much older, and much more aggressive. It won't be as gory of course, but the body count will be much more egregious. In trying to figure out this story's rightful place in history, I had to start comparing it to meteors and super volcanoes and atomic bombs. Not to spoil anything, but this is one of the more profound disasters we've ever covered, and the cause was I believe, something so innocuous and dumb, I've done it to my cat by accident before.
