What's up, dudes? It's a Peekskill miracle as Troy from Christmas Every Day joins me to talk all about the The Facts of Life “The Christmas Show" episode! It's a found family situation with Tootie, Natalie, Blair, Jo, and Mrs. Garrett. They learn about life and love and how to adult together, and we loved it!It's Christmas, and Jo just found out her plans to spend it with her mom are bust due to her mom's work schedule. So Blair and Tootie cook up a fixed phony raffle to buy Jo a plane ticket to Miami. Consequently, when Jo learns of the deceit, she feels like a charity case and gives Blair the stink eye. Meanwhile, Mrs. Garrett tries to sell fruitcakes to earn a little extra income. She even has Mr. Lazaroni help out as Santa.While Natalie awaits a coveted stereo, Tootie helps her get into the holiday spirit as well. Mrs. Garrett drives the three girls to the airport, and Jo and Mr. Lazaroni help her close up shop. Mr. L shows Mrs. G the true meaning of Christmas spirit when he refuses his paycheck and asks for the remaining fruitcakes. Subsequently, Blair returns Christmas Eve to spend the holiday with Jo and Mrs. Garrett. It's a Christmas miracle!Fake raffles? Check. Oversized furs? Of course--it's the '80s. Fruitcake? The Facts of Life! The Facts of Life was a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes and aired on NBC from 1979-1988. The show starred Charlotte Rae as Eastland School for Girls housemother Edna Garrett watching over an evolving cast of young female stars including Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Nancy McKeon and a very young Molly Ringwald! Geri went straight from special ed to special treatment as a Facts of Life cast member, portraying Blair's Cousin Geri and providing essential representation for kids growing up and living with Cerebral Palsy. Geri's life and career have always been an inspiration, as evidenced by her brand new coffee table book 'Geri's Jewels & Gems', which will provide you with a fresh, positive perspective on the inevitable hardships and struggles we all face. Brace for Geri's sunny outlook, grit and determination to shift your mood and encourage you to pursue your own dreams! As a child, Geri's imagination took her to Wimbledon, standup comedy stages and Hollywood. She was soon exchanging letters with Carol Burnett, performing at the Comedy Store and playing doubles with John McEnroe and Arthur Ash! Her mother had warned her, “Be careful what you wish for.” Geri teaches us that kids with disabilities often grow up emotionally stunted because so much emphasis is placed on their physical development. Cast in an NBC sitcom at the age of 23, Geri was a rich target for unscrupulous managers and “friends.” She frequently lost her way while being misunderstood, underestimated and searching for the courage to live an openly gay life. The physical beating of Cerebral Palsy can be very painful and poor balance leads to debilitating falls. Geri was recovering from back and neck surgery, waiting in line at CVS to purchase botox for her neck pain when David Milch approached her and felt inspired to cast her in Deadwood! In the latest installment of Casual August, writer and educator Larissa Phillips joins the pod to respond to the August 2 interview with Vanessa Grigoriadis, who theorized that childless cat ladies were secretly happier than moms, especially moms raising young children while caring for aging parents. Larissa related to much of what Vanessa said, but she had several things to add, including her later-in-life recognition that early motherhood makes more sense than later-in-life motherhood — and, what's more, single motherhood might not be as cool and easy as 1980s media made it out to be. A GenXer who grew up steeped in second-wave feminism, Larissa now advises her 20-something daughter to marry and start a family early, which is pretty much the opposite of what her own mom advised. In this conversation, Larissa (who was a guest on A Special Place In Hell back in March) explores how her thinking evolved, why her friends were shocked when she got pregnant at 29 (practically a teen mom!), how divorce rates in the 1970s and 80s made an entire generation wary of the nuclear family, and why she invokes Jordan Peterson when she explains to her daughter that being “high value” has a lot to do with being young. She and Meghan also wrestle with whether the hyper-professional, hyper-independent feminist ethos internalized by Gen Xers and millennials will end up being something of a blip in time in the history of civilization.
