The Philadelphia Inquirer's Will Bunch joins us today. I invited him on after reading his column about the death of Henry Kissinger and how the man who finally died would have likely applauded MSNBC firing Mehdi Hasan. Selfishly, I want to point out that Mehdi's not the only one who had a show canceled because management (or some other entity) didn't like his stance or coverage of the war between Hamas & Israel... But there's more news to talk about including Liz Cheney's revelations in her new book, Tommy Tuberville finally lifting his military promotions blockade, the Republican's impeachment threat, the Trump second term threat... I could go on, but I've got a show to prepare for.

House Republicans have been digging into the Biden family's allegedly questionable business dealings for months, and they're now taking things a step further — working towards authorizing a formal impeachment inquiry into the President to strengthen House Republicans' legal standing in court while their investigation continues. Meanwhile, George Santos became the sixth member of the House to be expelled in Congressional history, making the GOP's already slim majority in the House even smaller — leading to some concerns that Republicans in the House may have even more trouble passing their agenda. On the Rundown, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) explains why opening an impeachment inquiry into the President is both reasonable and necessary based on the evidence revealed, and why many Republicans, including himself, voted against Santos' expulsion. He also adds why he believes House Republicans still have the power to band together and get the job done despite losing a number in their majority. With just over a month left before the Iowa caucus, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has found herself neck-and-neck with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL). As her candidacy grows stronger, big-name donors are taking an interest. The Americans For Prosperity PAC, backed by billionaire Charles Koch, officially endorsed Haley's campaign last week. The Northeast Regional Director of Women for Nikki, Jennifer Nassour, joins the podcast to discuss Haley's recent strong polling and what her latest endorsement means for the Haley campaign. Today on Overpowering Emotions, I continue the parent trap series with a focus on one of the most significant traps: Accommodation. As adults, it is our instinct to shield anxious children from distress. However, when we do this, are we helping or hindering their growth? This episode delves deep into the effects of over-accommodation — from speaking for a shy child to avoiding certain social situations. We explore how these well-intentioned actions can inadvertently perpetuate and even worsen a child's anxiety, leading to increased dependency and a lack of self-efficacy. Join me as I discuss the importance of shifting from accommodation to empowerment. I'll share examples demonstrating how reducing accommodations can build confidence and resilience in anxious children. Discover the vital role of parents in this process — not as rescuers, but as supporters, guiding their children to face fears and develop coping skills. Tune in to empower your child towards courage and independence and start creating a plan to modify your accommodation behaviours. And, as promised, here are 50 examples of accommodations that worsen anxiety: 1. Speaking for a child in social situations. 2. Avoiding places or events to prevent a child's social anxiety. 3. Giving excessive warnings about upcoming events. 4. Allowing a child to skip school during stressful periods. 5. Avoiding friends or family with pets due to a child's phobia. 6. Modifying or skipping tests for students with test anxiety. 7. Not calling on a student in class to ease participation anxiety. 8. Parents staying in class to ease a child's separation anxiety. 9. Completing a child's tasks to avoid their frustration. 10. Avoiding certain foods that a child dislikes due to sensory issues. 11. Changing family plans to accommodate a child's preferences. 12. Letting a child avoid chores due to anxiety about doing them wrong. 13. Always letting a child win games to avoid disappointment. 14. Avoiding discussions on topics that make a child uncomfortable. 15. Not enforcing bedtime due to fears of the dark or being alone. 16. Always driving a different route to avoid a child's fear triggers. 17. Avoiding medical or dental visits due to a child's fear. 18. Letting a child stay in their comfort zone and not encouraging new activities. 19. Always resolving conflicts for a child to avoid their stress. 20. Keeping a child home from extracurricular activities due to anxiety. 21. Allowing excessive screen time to avoid tantrums. 22. Pre-emptively removing potential stressors from a child's environment. 23. Stepping in to finish a child's homework to avoid their anxiety. 24. Canceling playdates or outings last minute due to a child's anxiety. 25. Allowing a child to always play alone to avoid social stress. 26. Handling all of a child's social interactions. 27. Providing constant reassurance to a child's anxious questions. 28. Always giving in to a child's demands to avoid meltdowns. 29. Not encouraging a child to try new foods due to fear of rejection. 30. Not setting boundaries on a child's behaviors to avoid conflict. 33. Doing a child's chores or tasks to prevent their anxiety. 34. Never leaving a child with a babysitter due to separation anxiety. 35. Avoiding discussing future events to prevent a child's worry. 36. Rescuing a child from minor challenges to avoid their stress. 37. Allowing a child to dictate family schedules and routines. 38. Overprotecting a child from any form of criticism or negative feedback. 39. Not encouraging independence in daily tasks due to anxiety. 40. Altering family routines to suit one child's anxieties. 41. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (11/13/2023): 3:05pm- While appearing on The Rich Zeoli Show last week, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz said of the Obama Administration assisting Iranian nuclear development and subsequently endangering Israel: “Barack Obama has been a villain in this whole thing” and, despite knowing the former president since he was a student in law school, “my relationship with him is over.” Now more public figures are agreeing with Professor Dershowitz' assessment—even Bill Maher is openly criticizing former president Obama for his foreign policy in the Middle East and recent, controversial, statements he made suggesting there was a moral equivalence between Hamas and Israel. 3:15pm- A local news report from Fox 2 in San Francisco notes that city officials miraculously cleared the streets of homeless encampments and public drug use ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC)—which is expected to result in many notable world leaders gathering in San Francisco for the week-long meeting. Local citizens are now wondering: why did it take the arrival of Joe Biden and Xi Jinping for local government to clean up this dangerous mess? 3:20pm- On Monday, Donald Trump Jr. took the witness stand in a civil fraud trial in which New York Attorney General Letitia James alleges that former president Donald Trump inflated the value of assets controlled by the Trump Organization in financial statements. While leaving the courtroom, Don Jr. said he hopes New Yorkers realize how “destructive” these types of suites are for the city. If Donald Trump loses the case, he could be fined up to $250 million and be prohibited from doing business in New York moving forward. Notably, in 2018, while campaigning to become Attorney General, James vowed to “sue” Trump—providing evidence to the defense's argument that this civil suit is entirely political. 3:40pm- Brian Morris—Attorney at the Institute for Justice—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a disturbing allegation that the state of New Jersey is storing newborn baby DNA. Emma Camp of Reason writes: “In every U.S. state, healthcare workers perform blood tests on newborn infants to check for a range of genetic disorders. However, in New Jersey, the state Department of Health stores infants' blood for up to 23 years without informing parents or seeking their consent. In addition to merely keeping the blood, New Jersey reserves the right to do whatever it wishes with the leftover blood, including selling it or handing it over to the police without a warrant.” These allegations are according to a new lawsuit brought by the Institute for Justice. You can read the full article here: https://reason.com/2023/11/08/new-jersey-secretly-stores-your-newborns-blood-for-decades/. You can learn more about the Institute for Justice's fight for liberty here: https://ij.org/about-us/ 4:05pm- Greg Lukianoff— President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his new book, “The Canceling of the American Mind.” In the book, Lukianhoff documents how cancel culture was born on American college campuses. You can learn more about the book here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Canceling-of-the-American-Mind/Greg-Lukianoff/9781668019146. You can read his article at The Free Press here: https://www.thefp.com/p/american-colleges-gave-birth-to-cancel-culture 4:30pm- During last week's Republican Presidential Primary debate, Vivek Ramaswamy blasted GOP Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel for catering to NBC News and other left-wing media outlets. At one point, Ramaswamy called out moderator—and host of Meet the Press—Kristen Welker for pushing the disproven narrative that Donald Trump's 2016 presidential election victory was courtesy of Russian interference. In response to the criticisms, McDaniel mocked Ramaswamy for polling at 4%. 4:40pm- Steve Feldman—Executive Director of the Zionist Organization of America's Greater Philadelphia Chapter—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a disturbing boycott of local Jewish-owned businesses throughout the Philadelphia area. Feldman is countering the boycott with a BUYcott. The Zionist Organization of America is holding its Justice Louis Brandeis Award Dinner on December 3rd, 2023. You can learn more here: https://zoa.org/2023/11/10448862-gala2023/ 5:05pm- A local news report from Fox 2 in San Francisco notes that city officials miraculously cleared the streets of homeless encampments and public drug use ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC)—which is expected to result in many notable world leaders gathering in San Francisco for the week-long meeting. Local citizens are now wondering: why did it take the arrival of Joe Biden and Xi Jinping for local government to clean up this dangerous mess? Governor Gavin Newsom told reporters: “I know folks are saying, ‘oh they are just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town' and that's true… because it's true. 5:10pm- While speaking with Shannon Bream on Fox News, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley claimed she is “surging” while rivals Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have “flatlined.” However, RealClearPolitics polling averages indicate all three candidates rising in the polls as other candidates drop out of the race.   5:20pm- While appearing on Fox News with Trey Gowdy on Sunday night, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) announced he is suspending his presidential campaign. According to RealClearPolitics averages, Sen. Scott was polling at 2.5% prior to dropping out of the race. 5:40pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Economist & Research Fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss how inflation continues to punish Americans despite the Biden Administration raving about the inflation rate slowing in recent quarters. As Dr. Antoni notes, just because the inflation rate has slowed from its record peaks doesn't mean it isn't still a problem. The U.S. annual inflation rate of 3.7% remains well above the Federal Reserve's targeted 2% rate. 6:05pm- Mark Houck joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his lawsuit against the Biden Administration's Department of Justice. Houck is a pro-life father who was wrongfully charged with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act after protesting outside of an abortion clinic—and he was arrested at his home during an FBI raid that consisted of nearly two-dozen heavily armed agents. The egregious, authoritarian-style arrest understandably left his wife and children horrified. A Pennsylvania jury ultimately found Houck not guilty. Houck is now seeking $1.1 million for malicious prosecution, false arrest, and retaliatory prosecution. Houck is also running for U.S. Congress. You can learn more about his campaign here: https://www.houckforcongress.com 6:20pm- Brittany Bernstein of National Review writes: “The House Oversight Committee and House Judiciary Committee are demanding that director of Oval Office operations Annie Tomasini, Jill Biden adviser Anthony Bernal, chief of staff aide Katherine Reilly, and special assistant Ashley Williams meet with the committees to discuss President Biden's alleged mishandling of classified documents and any role he may have in his family's foreign business dealings… The subpoenas are the latest step in House Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Biden.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/house-republicans-subpoena-biden-aides-to-testify-about-classified-docs-biden-family-business-dealings/ 6:35pm- While appearing on Fox News with Trey Gowdy on Sunday night, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) announced he is suspending his presidential campaign. As civilians in Gaza continue to struggle immensely, there are mixed thoughts on whether Israel should call a ceasefire or continue its fight against Hamas. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed last week that a cease fire is not an option as of now as it could benefit Hamas. At home, concerns over the southern border are top of mind -- as calls for better resources and funding remain an insistent ask from Republican lawmakers. On the Rundown, the youngest female to ever serve in the Senate and Alabama's first female Senator, Katie Britt, discusses why she agrees a ceasefire cannot happen until Hamas is defeated and how the White House's inability to acknowledge the border crisis stops them from fixing it. She also discusses her new book, 'God Calls Us To Do Hard Things: Lessons from the Alabama Wiregrass,' which shares her story and urges Americans to better for themselves and the nation. Since the pandemic normalized working from home, office spaces have been less occupied, with one report even showing office occupancy rates in major cities are nearly half their pre-pandemic levels. The Biden administration has announced it will try to convert commercial real estate to residential housing to help with affordability. Cancel culture—the term and the practice—has left its mark on American culture, business, academia and society at all levels over the past few years. Was it inevitable? Is it permanent? Or is it, as authors Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott argue, a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status and dominance? They say it is just a symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to "win" arguments without actually winning arguments. Drawing on data and research on the phenomenon of cancel culture and how it works, along with many examples of how both the left and the right use it to silence their enemies, Lukianoff and Schlott have concrete steps to offer that they say can reclaim a free speech culture in every realm. Lukianoff and Schlott, authors of the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind, return with their new book The Canceling of the American Mind. The Marxist Left knows that a global totalitarian government is impossible with America in the way, and the best way to destroy America is to make sure we forget God. To this end, Leftists have systematically removed prayer, Bible reading, and the Ten Commandments from government schools and replaced them with evolution, pornography, and perversion. Now, they are seeking to cancel those who remind Americans of their Godly Heritage and the blessings God provides for obedience to His Word. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comWhen I wrote an op-ed for the Boston Globe titled Big Law's Cancel Culture, I got an earful from folks who complained about the use of the term “cancel culture” (which was picked by the Globe's copy editors, not by me). There are many folks who argue the “cancel culture” doesn't exist or, if it does, it's greatly exaggerated. While I have concerns about the term “cancel culture”—it carries baggage, causing some people to stop listening—I still do use it. My approach to language is more descriptive than prescriptive, so if a term or phrase is useful, it's generally okay by me. When you say “cancel culture,” people know what you're talking about, and I don't know of an alternative term that refers to exactly the same phenomenon.Cancel-culture denial tends to be more common on the left. I wonder, then, whether some progressives might be more willing to acknowledge it now that some on the left are arguably getting “canceled” for expressing pro-Hamas, pro-Palestine, or anti-Israel views. (Please note my use of the term “arguably”; I'm not here to debate the merits of these controversies, which are very fact-specific, and I condemn anything that crosses the line into threats, harassment, and other speech not protected by the First Amendment.)Indeed, cancellation comes from all sides—a major theme of The Canceling of the American Mind, an excellent new book by Greg Lukianoff, president and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), and Rikki Schlott, a columnist for the New York Post. Lukianoff is left of center and Schlott is right of center, but they agree that cancel culture is real—as they demonstrate in their book, before offering possible responses. If you're concerned about free speech, cancel culture, and related issues, then you will enjoy my interview of Greg Lukianoff—one of the most eloquent, steadfast defenders of the First Amendment and free-speech values, for more than 20 years. Thanks to Greg for speaking with me, for writing this book, and for defending the freedom of speech and thought in our great nation.Show Notes:* Greg Lukianoff bio, The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression* The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust and Threatens Us All―But There Is a Solution, by Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott* Sick of Cancel Culture? Republican strategist and co-founder of South & Hill Strategies, Colin Reed, joins the Rundown to discuss how the last three weeks of the GOP's speaker election chaos in Congress have impacted the party's long-term prospects. Lawmakers are growing concerned about the possibility of terrorists entering the U.S. through the country's open border. Get your tickets to meet Peter Boghossian + Michael Shellenberger: https://skeptic.com/event Cancel Culture is a new phenomenon, and The Canceling of the American Mind is the first book to codify it and survey its effects. From the team that brought you the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind comes hard data and research on what cancel culture is and how it works, along with hundreds of new examples showing the left and the right both working to silence their enemies. The Canceling of the American Mind will change how you view cancel culture. Rather than a moral panic, we should consider it a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status, and dominance. Cancel culture is just one symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to “win” arguments without actually winning arguments. After all, why bother refuting your opponents when you can just take away their platform or career? Shermer, Lukianoff and Schlott discuss: • the definition of Cancel Culture • The Henny Youngman Principle: “Compared to what?” • Cancel Culture as imagined moral panic • Cancel Culture on the political Left/Right and on social media • free speech law vs. norms • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) • sensitivity training • bias hotlines and silencing of speech • pluralistic ignorance • The 4 Great Untruths • Jean Twenge's theory of generational change • solutions to Cancel Culture. Greg Lukianoff is the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and one of the country's most passionate defenders of free expression. His law degree is from Stanford. He worked for the ACLU of Northern California, the Organization for Aid to Refugees, and the EnvironMentors Project before joining FIRE in 2001. Rikki Schlott is a New York City-based journalist and political commentator.
