As Spin Off nears 50 years old, editor Pamela K. Schultz sees herself as the host of a wonderful spinning party that welcomes one and all. Taking a day off from the grind of law school, Pamela Schultz visited an art fair and saw a spinner with a spinning wheel. A longtime knitter, she had resisted suggestions that she learn to spin, but the rhythm of treadling and drafting offered an antidote to her stress. She had a few hiccups at the beginning, fighting against unsuitable fiber and unloved tools, but eventually she was hooked. Within a few years of learning to spin, as her passions for spinning and other crafts grew, Pamela found herself teaching others to spin using resources from Spin Off's website. When she had the opportunity to deepen her craft, she dove deeply into not only knitting and spinning but also weaving and other fibery explorations. In 2024 she became Spin Off's content editor and in 2025 took the helm. Pamela keeps in mind those experiences as a beginning spinner and a teacher of beginners as she develops the editorial plans for Spin Off's magazine, website, and video offerings. She describes what goes into building a balanced issue—inspiration, project patterns, tutorials, and community— and what it takes to bring it all to life. For a publication nearing 50 years, Spin Off focuses on finding the right balance of foundational basics, brain-tickling invitations to exploration, and rigorous deep dives into spinning technique. In this episode, hear Pamela's take on the particular joy spinners take in sharing our craft, find out what a first-timer at SOAR should know, and learn about the free resources from teaching guides to video courses that Spin Off offers alongside the magazine. Flex Ltd., ticker FLEX, surged roughly eighty percent in a single month — and the company hasn't even completed the spinoff that sparked it. Nick and Kasey cover this electronics manufacturing services giant for the first time at Chip Stock Investor, breaking down what drove the run-up, what the proposed spinoff actually is, and whether there is anything left for long-term fundamental investors at today's valuation.Flex is one of the world's largest electronics manufacturing services companies, competing with Foxconn, Jabil, Celestica, and Sanmina across a global footprint spanning over ninety locations in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. Unlike the perception that contract manufacturing means cheap labor in Asia, Flex's business increasingly runs on automation and robotics — a structural shift that is compressing cost parity across geographies and driving genuine margin improvement. The spinoff is the centerpiece of this episode. Flex is separating its Cloud and Power Infrastructure segment — referred to as SpinCo in the materials — into a standalone company expected to begin trading by the first quarter of calendar year 2027. This segment posted thirty-eight percent year-over-year revenue growth in fiscal year 2026, with guidance pointing to sixty-five to seventy-five percent growth in fiscal 2027 and over eighty percent in fiscal 2028. The business covers critical power products for utility companies, embedded power systems inside data center servers and racks, thermal management solutions that compete in the same market as Vertiv, and cloud power infrastructure for hyperscalers and neo clouds. SpinCo also carries nearly ten percent adjusted operating margins — roughly double the margin profile of the remaining Flex business. What stays with Flex after the split is the larger but slower-growing core: twenty-one billion in revenue across Regulated Manufacturing Solutions, covering healthcare and automotive, and Integrated Technology Solutions serving customers like Cisco, Juniper Networks, now part of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Teradyne. Growth there is expected in the low to mid-single digits. Margins are trending in the right direction, but this is not a high-margin business.Nick and Kasey also zoom out on the broader industrial conglomerate breakup theme reshaping the market — from GE Vernova to Honeywell — and how Flex's spinoff fits squarely into that playbook. The prior Flex spinoff, NextPower in 2024, has performed very well for shareholders and gives the SpinCo story some historical credibility. The balance sheet is in reasonable shape for a manufacturer, with enough cash on hand to support bolt-on acquisitions as SpinCo looks to consolidate market share. The valuation discussion is honest: at roughly sixty to seventy times current earnings, this is a momentum trade. The forward picture for fiscal 2028 could look closer to thirty times earnings if growth delivers, but the stock is not cheap by traditional measures. For in-depth stock research and the Semiconductor Insider membership, visit chipstockinvestor.com. New data shows former politicians are taking the taxpayers for a ride. A new article in the Spinoff has revealed the Government has been spending around $300,000 per year to provide Crown limousines to former Prime Ministers and their spouses - even though the service goes mostly unused. Remuneration Authority chair Geoff Summers says it's unclear if these costs could be cut as a result. "All it says is that when a person stops being a Prime Minister, as the Royal Commission said way back then - it inevitably attracts obligations of a social nature that don't disappear with retirement."

Tell you what I'm loving about this new, New Zealand-made music app that's been unveiled: predominantly, it's the confidence these guys have that this thing is going to work—and that it's going to go global. Now, if you haven't caught up on it, let me get you across the details. The app is called Lume and it's going to launch, I think, in the next couple of weeks or something like that. On Lume, you're not going to be able to stream music like you do on Spotify. Instead, you'll buy albums—and then you'll own those albums. They'll come with some extra stuff as well, if you're a real music nerd—bonus material, that sort of thing. You're not going to pay a monthly subscription; you're going to pay $25 an album. Now, I don't know if this is going to work but I think there's a really good chance. I mean, it's got some very smart people behind it. Duncan Greive, for example, who started The Spinoff at a time when everybody else in the media was in retreat—he's very clever at seeing small gaps in the market and then exploiting them. He's got financial backing from the guy who founded Substack. He's got backing from the guy who co-founded Letterboxd. He's got backing from Lorde. It's launching right at a time when people are complaining about the AI slop being fed to them by Spotify and the weird algorithms that now determine what music we hear. It's being launched at a time when young people are nostalgic for owning things instead of just streaming them—when artists are complaining they don't get enough money from streamers like Spotify. This will give them much, much more money and it will give fans a chance to support artists financially. And it's coming at a time when Spotify has jacked up its price again, in a never-ending series of small increases that just end up costing heaps every month. So there is a chance it could work. I mean, I think it's going to be a smaller, die-hard fan market than the big, lazy, “press a button and listen to music” Spotify market—but it could work. But what I love most about it is that the guys building this really believe it will work. They're already talking about taking it global—not in a “maybe one day” way but in a “we're starting in New Zealand, next Australia, then the US and the UK” way. They're already workshopping what they'll do with problematic artists like Michael Jackson, R. Kelly and Kanye West because they think it's going to get to that. They are confident it's going to work. They're already preparing. I love that. I reckon that kind of confidence is sometimes the difference between whether something is successful or not. And I reckon here in New Zealand, we could do with a lot more of that big thinking. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Tommy is joined by Nathan Mitchell, best known for his role as Black Noir on The Boys and Zion on Ginny & Georgia. This conversation is spoiler-free, and a huge celebration of The Boys as we near the series finale dropping tomorrow. Nathan opens up about stepping into the physically demanding and largely silent role of Black Noir, and how he embraced the challenge of building a character through movement rather than dialogue. He reflects on learning early on that the character would remain masked and voiceless, and how that limitation ultimately became a creative strength. As The Boys heads into its final episode, Nathan shares what it’s been like to say goodbye to the role, the emotional weight of filming major moments, and how he approached evolving from the original Noir into a completely new version of the character. The conversation also dives into the behind-the-scenes realities of the show, from intense stunt work and navigating the iconic suit to the shocking moment he learned of Noir’s fate and unexpected return. Nathan teases what fans can expect from the final episode while also sharing his own ideas for a potential spinoff. Beyond The Boys, he teases the upcoming season of Ginny & Georgia, shares fan reactions to his character Zion, and how he balances multiple roles across very different worlds. In this episode, we dive deep into the evolving landscape of industrial AI, exploring why simply offering an API is no longer enough for true business value. We reconnect with leading minds behind recent billion-euro deals and discuss the journey from foundational models to real-world industrial impact. Our conversation with Davy Demeyer spotlights the creativity gap in industry, the challenges of automation standards, and what it takes to build the next killer application. We share firsthand insights from pioneers, reflect on lessons learned, and debate how agents, humans, and deterministic code generation will shape tomorrow's factories. If you want the latest and greatest in industrial AI—and why it matters for your business—this is the episode you can't miss.

In today's episode, we cover: FedEx Freight Spinoff: We kick things off with the major corporate shakeup at FedEx Corp., whose board of directors has officially approved the spinoff of its less-than-truckload (LTL) unit, FedEx Freight. We discuss the details of the separation, which is set to conclude by June 1, and how the new standalone company will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "FDXF". UP-NS Rail Merger Application: Next, we head over to the rails to unpack the ongoing regulatory proceedings between Union Pacific (UP) and Norfolk Southern (NS). The two Class I railroads have submitted a revised merger application to the Surface Transportation Board (STB), defending it as "comprehensive and complete" after their initial filing was rejected for lacking adequate market-share data and specific merger agreement details. New Jersey's Independent Contractor Rules: Finally, we look at the crucial changes to New Jersey's controversial independent contractor rule impacting truckers. Trucking companies are breathing a cautious sigh of relief as the revised rule removes language that would have classified a worker as an employee simply because the company required them to comply with federal or state safety regulations. The crew dug into reality‑TV tea around a rumored “Ex‑Husbands of Atlanta” spinoff tied to Todd Tucker, with chatter that familiar former husbands (including names like Apollo Nida and Peter Thomas) could be part of an intentionally “messy” post‑divorce spotlight—complete with talk of potential added drama if Simon Guobadia ever joins. Kicking off with the big headlines, the show covered Donald Trump flat‑out rejecting Iran’s latest response to a U.S. proposal to end the war, calling it “totally unacceptable,” while Benjamin Netanyahu warned the broader conflict isn’t truly “over” as long as key issues like enriched uranium and missile capabilities remain unresolved. On the entertainment and culture side, the crew dug into reality‑TV tea around a rumored “Ex‑Husbands of Atlanta” spinoff tied to Todd Tucker, with chatter that familiar former husbands (including names like Apollo Nida and Peter Thomas) could be part of an intentionally “messy” post‑divorce spotlight—complete with talk of potential added drama if Simon Guobadia ever joins. They also debated the latest Beyoncé speculation—on air it was framed as a near‑term new single/album rumor, but outside reporting notes her team has pushed back on claims of an imminent “Act III” rollout tied to the Met Gala buzz. And comedy fans got a big moment: Netflix’s live “Roast of Kevin Hart” was a star‑stacked spectacle—plus multiple reports highlight that Hart and Katt Williams used the night to publicly bury their long‑running feud.
