In this episode, we explore the 1981 television pilot K-9 and Company, a unique and historic entry in the Doctor Who universe. Produced as a proposed Doctor Who spin-off, K-9 and Company stars the legendary Elisabeth Sladen as investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith alongside the robotic dog K9, voiced by John Leeson. While both were iconic former companions of the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, they had never appeared together on screen until the K-9 and Company pilot episode, titled A Girl's Best Friend. Broadcast on BBC1 as a Doctor Who related Christmas special on 28 December 1981, K-9 and Company remains a vital piece of the Doctor Who franchise history despite not being commissioned for a full series. The existence of K-9 and Company was largely due to Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner, who wanted to bring Elisabeth Sladen back to the Doctor Who family. His initial 1980 plan for the actress would have seen Sarah Jane Smith travel in the TARDIS during the Doctor Who transition from Tom Baker to Peter Davison. However, Sladen wanted a role that evolved beyond her previous Doctor Who narrative. Simultaneously, the Doctor Who production team was struggling with the logistics of K9. While K9 was a massive hit with Doctor Who viewers, the prop was technically awkward and made the Doctor Who heroes too capable. The solution was K-9 and Company, a child-orientated Doctor Who spin-off where Sarah Jane Smith would be the central heroic lead. Before K-9 and Company, Elisabeth Clara Heath Sladen built a career in theatre and television, appearing in Z-Cars and Doomwatch. Her work on Z-Cars led directly to her casting in Doctor Who. Interestingly, the Doctor Who role of the new companion for The Time Warrior was originally cast with April Walker. However, Doctor Who lead Jon Pertwee felt the chemistry was wrong, leading to Sladen being cast as the definitive Sarah Jane Smith. She played the role in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, eventually returning for the K-9 and Company pilot. Her Doctor Who legacy continued in 2006 with David Tennant and the successful Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Following her death in 2011, Doctor Who aired a tribute during The Impossible Astronaut, proving her status as a Doctor Who icon. The voice behind the metal dog in K-9 and Company, John Leeson, first voiced K9 in the 1977 Doctor Who serial The Invisible Enemy. While Tom Baker had a difficult relationship with the K9 prop, he worked well with Leeson. Leeson briefly left Doctor Who to avoid being typecast but returned for K-9 and Company and later the Doctor Who anniversary special The Five Doctors. The K-9 and Company pilot also featured Colin Jeavons, known for his work in The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Doctor Who serial The Underwater Menace, and Mary Wimbush, a stalwart of The Archers. If you had a successful sitcom in the seventies then the only logical thing to do was to send your characters on holiday for the silver screen version. Are You Being Served was no exception and in the 1977 film spinoff we get all our favourites enjoying the baking hot sun of Elstree Studios. Okay, it's not a great film overall but is it true to the spirit of the show?

In the M&A world, corporate spin-offs are a well-used tactic at board level. For corporate treasurers, this can mean creating a fresh treasury framework for the new entity in a relatively short period of time. But by becoming involved in such a project from the outset, and being open to collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, they can steer their department – and business at large – towards a successful implementation.

To support a successful business carve-out, the treasury team at Daimler Truck had to understand which functions were essential from the outset and what could be refined once the new business had shifted into top gear.

When Solvay announced it was splitting off its specialty chemicals business into the new firm Syensqo, its treasury hatched an ambitious plan to duplicate the function and have two independent treasury frameworks operating at full steam under one roof well before the go-live date.

In light of Guy Fawkes Day last week, the NZ First Party has launched a member's bill that aims to ban the public sale and use of fireworks in the country.  Party Leader, Winston Peters, in announcing the member's bill, says the reason for this proposed move stems from its possibility to cause fires, and its harm to pets. News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host Joel spoke to Marcelo Rodriguez Ferrere, an Associate Law Professor at the University of Auckland, about the member's bill, and the impact fireworks season has on animals, both companion and non-companion. They also touched on why we have seen so many member's bills come from the party, in light of an opinion piece by Spinoff journalist Joel MacManus.

I learned a lot in this conversation with Alison Mau about her life and journey and what has led to the setting up of Tika.  Curiousity guided the questions and we talk about a lot of things starting with her childhood, growing up in Melbourne, experiences at primary school that shaped her and led to a resilient attitude, the special bond she feels with horses and why that is so, becoming a journalist back in the analogue days before lots of computers or dictaphons, and her presenting on TV and how she ended up in New Zealand.  Then we focus in on the setting up of Tika which is a charity that empowers people to come forward to report past sexual harm and how it works, what it means and the future potential.   And an encouragment for us all: "Happiness for me is not in money, possessions or anything like that - it is, how can I be useful..."
