Laura Merli! Comedian! Delight! Human with a new standup special out now! ABOUT THE NEW SPECIAL WHICH IS ALSO HER DEBUT SPECIAL, "BELLY SLAPPIN' FUN!"   After cutting her teeth for 8 years in the indie comedy scene, Brooklyn comedy-favorite Laura Merli has amassed over 2 million likes on TikTok. Laura specializes in set-up/punch-line jokes and one-liners rather than storytelling, in the vein of her influences Mitch Hedberg and Maria Bamford, although Laura adds her own distinctive and unique flavor. This style lets her cover A LOT of ground: drugs, sex, family/childhood, her ADHD/autism, and her dog. While the jokes emanate from a wide array of departure points, the humor centers around the awkwardness and absurdity of being alive. Laura's delivery is distinctive as well - people describe her voice as deadpan but she promises she is being very expressive!    Since childhood Merli has been enamored with acting and writing. Although to Merli, improv initially seemed like “paying to embarrass yourself”, she finally followed the lead of some friends and tried classes at ImprovAsylum. She had a great experience and ended up obsessed, but was still wanting the ability to write before stepping onto the stage. Realizing this pointed toward stand-up, Laura got her start at a friend's variety show called “What Else You Gonna Do Wednesday Night” and never looked back!   Merli has taken her art and career in her own hands, refining her material all around NYC, and on the road via The Awkward Route Tour with fellow stand up Freddy G (Sirius XM, NPR). With  comedy well-suited to the TikTok format, Belly Slappin' Fun is eagerly anticipated by her large online following who, along with fans-to-be will get their dose of Belly Slappin' Fun on July 18!    ABOUT LAURA MERLI: Laura Merli is an NYC-based standup, actress, and writer. She amassed over 2 million likes on TikTok, was “passed” at New York Comedy Club, has headlined the “Don't Tell” and “Modelface” comedy shows, and appeared at the New York Comedy festival as well as the Women in Comedy Festival. Every third Thursday, she hosts the Good Girl stand up show at Friends & Lovers, one of the hottest alt-comedy spots in Brooklyn. She has performed at top-tier venues across the city including The Bell House, Littlefield, Caveat, and more.   As someone who didn't start comedy until their late 20s, Laura has held a wide variety of odd jobs including cashier, ebay store photographer, project manager, zombie in an escape room, business analyst, and carnival worker (her grandparents family business). She has since written for and acted on sketch house teams at the PIT and Improv Boston as well as Reductress, The Hard Times, and McSweeney's. Merli has hosted/written/produced videos for the female-focused humor brand Cheezcake.  ABOUT THIS PODCAST!: You can listen to it! We had a great chat! You can have a great listen! A Gyrating Rebellion: Comedy, Movement, and her Somatic Response to Culture With Toni Nagy

So much of what we experience culturally and what is happening in the larger scope of the world today can feel indigestible. Especially if we seek to handle it mentally. Being able to metabolize the suffering, dysfunction, and pain of the world is better attempted through our whole body and beingness. Today, I'm incredibly excited to host Toni Nagy, a comedian, and dancer who harnesses the playful power of interpretive dance to navigate deep and often heavy topics with both sincerity and humor.  In this fun and casual conversation, Toni Nagy takes us through: - Her innovative artistic expression through the comedy of interpretive dance. - How she discovered the power of movement in a countercultural environment, contrasting with her sports-oriented upbringing. -How starting dance later in life and being “bad” offered its own benefits - How she marries interpretive dance with political and social commentary in her comedy routines to create a unique and engaging form of artistic expression. - How she views the realm of somatics from her unique perspective. - Her “inner masculinity” and how she channels that into her comedy and as a helpful tool in her personal life... -parenting tips, astrology snacks, and so much more! Toni Nagy is a stand-up comedian and content creator most known for her viral videos where she interpretive dances her philosophies while pontificating, gyrating, and questioning culture. She has 600,000 followers across her social media platforms, not that she's counting or anything. Her comedy is quasi–radical, pseudo-philosophical, somewhat existential, and mostly funny. Observing Toni's work is like micro-dosing shrooms, but then an hour later, wondering, "wait... was that actually a macro-dose!?" She's directed and acted in numerous films and written multiple award-winning screenplays, and is the founder of Cavelight Productions. Nagy has performed stand-up at the Comedy Store in LA, Flappers LA, Elysian Theater LA, Greenwich Village Comedy Club NY, the Improv Boston, Laugh Boston, Next Stage Theater Vermont, the Palm Springs Comedy Festival, and the infamous "Sweet" show at the Chelsea Music Hall in NYC. The Broadway Comedy NYC club twice voted her “Best New Comedian.” She is currently on a national tour performing a two-person multi-disciplinary comedy show with her 13-year-old daughter entitled “Go To Your Womb!” It's like a PG-13 acid trip you'll later want to process with your therapist. She is also on tour with her one-person show “Men, Come Inside of Me,” a comedy show during which she embodies all the men that have come inside of her, both metaphorically and literally. Toni relates to the men that have come inside of her and connects to them on a heart, soul, and genital level. Her effort to uncover these men is entwined with her desire to understand them, as well as herself. Jay sits down with comedian Tooky Kavanagh to talk comedy, childhood and butchers her name at least thrice. It's a good listen!  Subscribe to our Patreon at: http://www.patreon.com/BigLilKidPod With razor sharp wit and a charm once described as “ineffable,” Tooky (rhymes with cookie) Kavanagh speaks her mind with honesty, charisma, and edge. After just a few years on the scene, Tooky has already performed in New York, Denver, and all over New England. She regularly opens for Myq Kaplan when he visits Boston, performed on a Multiple Sclerosis benefit show with Dr. Jonathan Katz, has opened for Eugene Mirman, and has performed on lineups alongside comedy notables Gary Gulman, Jessica Kirson, and Alingon Mitra, to name a few. In March of 2018 and 2019, she was selected to perform on the Comedy Central UP NEXT audition showcase, and in both April 2018 and February 2019, she was selected to audition for the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs festival. She was selected to be a featured comedian in the 2020 Boston Calling festival… but we'll just see what happens in 2021 instead. Additional standup credits include: The 2020 Rogue Island Comedy Festival; December 2018 Comic-In-Residence at The Comedy Studio; The 2017 Women In Comedy Festival; Thunderfest 2017; The 2017 Boston Comedy Festival; Boston Comedy Chicks; The 2017 Boston Comedy Arts Festival; headlining Laughing Liberally Boston; headlining It Ain't Over ‘Til It's Dover; headlining Stand-Up Thursdays at John Harvard's; co-producing Token: Rethink What Comedy Can Be at ImprovBoston; featuring at The Producer's Club in Manhattan, NY; and Comic Sit-In at The Riot Theater.  She cohosts the Loud Women podcast with friend and producer Marissa Emmanuele, hosts The Rehash on 2MBstudios, and cohosts NORM!: The Cheers Podcast on Facebook Live. As an actor, she is a founding cast member of Suzzy, was a regular cast member of the “Redo Crew” for Starstruck: Close Encounters of the Awkward Kind, starred as The Humbled Hobo in a 48 Hour Film Project film, is a featured character in the short film Woman Unknown, and was a recurring character in the web series, Paid For By.   She can be seen regularly at Boston-based institutions such as The Comedy Studio, ImprovBoston, and Laugh Boston. Also, she's the one who described her own charm as “ineffable,” but it's still true!

So there’s that. The Women In Comedy Festival is one of my favorite annual events in Boston, and has been since its more humble beginning in 2009, when most of the shows were held in one venue, ImprovBoston. It has expanded in some way every year, and this year, they brought in some scouts all over the industry to see some of the amazing talent – 115 acts in all. I bounced around to different shows all five days of the festival, and tried to catch people at after parties or between venues. I got four on site, which make up this episode, and one other by phone, with headliner Emma Willmann, which will be next week's episode. I interviewed three stand-up comedians and one filmmaker for this week's episode – Nina Daniels, Will Martin, Tina Friml, and Dawn Smith. I'll give them each their own introductions as they come up. Daniels calls herself a triple minority in comedy – a black woman who plays the cello. You can find out more about her and her web series, The Model's Diet, on www.ninadaniels.com. Martin had a standout set on one of strangest showcase of the week, “Rated G n. R,” a mix of clean and blue standup backed by a Guns n' Roses cover band, Cocaine Tongue. He's on Twitter at @MrWillMartin. Friml killed on the NBC Comedy Spotlight show, and she's been doing comedy less than two years. Dawn Smith used to work on political ad campaigns. Now she makes fun of them on Paid For By, the web series she created, wrote, directed, and co-produced. Smith has two episodes done and is looking for funding to finish up the series, so if you hear this and you're inclined to help, you can find out how at paidforby.com. This week's featured track comes to us from wife and husband team The Smoking Flowers. It's called “Young & Brave,” and it's the first single from their upcoming album, Let's Die Together, out June 8. If you come to the Department of Tangents site on Monday morning, you'll get to see the video in which they play some of their favorite musicians, from Johnny and June to John and Yoko to all four Ramones. You'll get to see the video and read a short e-mail interview with the band.
