A thousand years ago, in the city of Samarqand, a scholar by the name of Abu al-Layth gave lessons about how to live a good life—a life that was pleasing both to God and to people. He dealt with almost every aspect of life, from how to greet people and how to eat, to how to study and debate. What's more, Abu al-Layth also explained why, linking lessons on manners to clear moral principles laid out in the Quran and the life of the Prophet. At some point, Abu al-Layth's students compiled these teachings into a book called Bustan al-‘Arifin (‘The Garden of the Knowledgeable'). Over the passing of time, its reputation grew and grew, seeing copies and translations being made from the Ottoman Empire to Aceh in what is today Indonesia. And now the book is finally available in English too. Nile Green talks to Peri Bearman, translator of A Guide to a Life of Moral Integrity: An Annotated Translation of Bustān al-ʿārifīn by Abū al-Layth al-Samarqandī (Georgias Press, 2025).
Send us Fan MailPeaches sits down with Kaylon, a former Air Force Security Forces military working dog handler, dog trainer, and father of a 17-year-old preparing for Air Force Special Warfare. This episode is for the parents.Kaylon talks about his time as a Security Forces K9 handler at RAF Mildenhall, his deployment experience, working explosive detection dogs, and eventually transitioning into professional dog training. The New Story with Rebecca Conran podcast where we explore all things holistic.August begins with Chiron's retrograde, inviting old wounds around identity, worth, and belonging into our heart-centred awareness so that we can offer them the compassion they may have always deserved. As the weeks unfold, the cosmos encourages us to open our hearts in relationship and to speak with greater authenticity, both internally and externally. There is plenty of momentum, inspiration, and opportunity woven throughout August; there is also a reminder to move with discernment. Not every emotion requires a reaction, not every thought reflects the truth, and not every challenge is here to block your path. Some are simply invitations to deepen your wisdom. This is a month to choose presence over impulse, connection over conflict, and authenticity over appearance. If you allow yourself to listen beneath the noise, August has much to reveal.I help my clients to ground themselves physically, and I support emotional rebalancing. If you are interested in working with me 1:1, check out my holistic coaching offerings here.Rebecca Conran is a certified trauma-informed holistic health coach, astrologer, energy healer, and published writer on the subject of spirituality and esoteric arts. In this episode, we kick things off with a massive equipment theft bust as law enforcement officers across the Carolinas recovered thirteen semi-trucks, three trailers, and two motor vehicles worth over one million dollars during an ongoing Florence County investigation. Two North Carolina men face grand larceny and conspiracy charges for allegedly stealing nine commercial motor vehicles between November 2022 and October 2025, with the eighteen-vehicle recovery highlighting the critical importance of fast reporting and secure parking controls. Next, we explore the less-than-truckload sector where XPO delivered record-breaking second-quarter results that crushed Wall Street expectations with adjusted earnings per share of one dollar and seventy cents. The Greenwich-based carrier's LTL unit posted a seventy-nine point nine percent adjusted operating ratio, three hundred basis points better year-over-year, with management declaring the industry is still in the early innings of a multiyear double-digit rate growth cycle. Finally, we cover how Saia's softer full-year margin outlook sent shares tumbling twelve percent in midday trading Thursday despite delivering better-than-expected quarterly earnings. The Johns Creek carrier now expects to hit the lower end of its guidance range, with the addition of thirty-three new service centers since 2022 dragging on margins as these fresh facilities still trail the legacy network with operating ratios in the low-ninety percent range. Furthermore, Shaquille O'Neal made a bold prediction about Joel Embiid being the NBA's best center next season and it has Sixers fans talking. In other news, we break down the underrated impact LeBron will have on the development of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and the rest of Philadelphia's young core. 0:00 - The brand-new Broncos training facility/headquaters is officially open and it's GORGEOUS. The media and players were all star-struck at camp yesterday. It quite literally pays to know the Wal-Mart folks. You've got the shiny new toys now. It's time to go to work. It's officially Super Bowl or Bust time.18:36 - What do the Nuggets want in return for Peyton Watson? According to Shams, Denver's had to shift their asking price a bit.33:45 - Last night's Rockies game followed a very predictable trajectory. Starting pitching was servicable, and offense was good enough to build a lead. Then the bullpen couldn't throw a friggin strike. At least the Rockies are showing signs of progress this year. They're actually staying competitive in games before they blow it, as opposed to last year when they never had a lead to blow.
The Giants enter training camp with dramatically higher expectations, and Evan Roberts believes anything short of the playoffs would be a disappointment. John Harbaugh's demanding approach, Jaxson Dart's potential year-two leap and the painful close losses from last season have Evan seeing a nine or ten-win team. Tiki Barber pushes back, warning that major questions remain in the secondary, run defense and receiving corps, while Shaun Morash wants the Giants to finish the season looking like a franchise clearly on the rise. A Vita Vea trade request sparks another debate over whether the Giants should aggressively fill their biggest defensive weakness while Dart remains on his rookie contract. The crew also examines Harbaugh's ability to control the media, worries about Dart's physical playing style and reacts to an unforgettable theory that aliens may finally be ready to save the Jets.
