Today’s show wraps up my series on collaboration. It’s a tribute to art and to friendship. It’s about what happens when you’re on a roll, when you’re making strides, realizing your dream…and the unthinkable happens. What do you do? How do you go on? Do you go on? If you’re just joining Her Process for the first time, today’s guest, Camilla Ochlan, has been on the show before with her Werewolf Whisperer series writing partner, Bonita Gutierrez.  But Camilla, being the creative soul that she is, and I’m guessing also a master at organization, has another writing partner with whom she’s been creating the world that houses another series, called Of Cats and Dragons. In fact, she and her dear friend, Carol Leever, her Of Cats and Dragons illustrator and co-writer, have been creating this world for over three decades now. But they didn't realize it right away. When Camilla and Carol did finally decide to share their creation with the world, life, as it does, stepped in with a twist that neither friend could ever have imagined or prepared for. You always hear people say that they meant to do x, y, z, but "life got in the way." Well, these ladies didn't let "life" thwart their plans. They've bobbed and weaved, and have persevered. This is their story.  Keep up with the pod: http://www.herprocess.com Visit the world Of Cats and Dragons: http://ofcatsanddragons.com

I'm excited to be chatting with writer/director, Tina Cesa Ward and actor, Rachael Hip-Flores. These ladies first worked together in 2008 when Tina cast Rachael in her ground breaking web series, Anyone But Me. The show went on to win Indie Soap awards, a Clicker award for best drama, a Writers Guild Award for best Original New Media, and more. Rachael won a Streamy for her portrayal of series lead, Vivian. Clearly this was a pairing that worked! And it turned out to be the beginning of a long working relationship, and friendship.  Today the ladies talk about casting, from the perspective of both the actor and the director. They talk about what it takes to make a successful working relationship on set, and they share how they keep it fresh after years of working together. If you want to get some great insight, and have some laughs along the way, take a listen!

In this, the third installment of my special series on collaboration, I’m talking with someone with whom I’ve recently collaborated, my dear friend and producer extraordinaire, Cynthia Graner. Cynthia is an AFI alum who has produced commercials, branded content, feature films, short films, episodics…she’s basically done it all. Today, in addition to hearing how the work flow and other aspects of the working relationship between a producer and writer/director work, Cynthia talks about the various roles of different types of producers. Oh! And my role was that of the writer/director. A little background…Cynthia and I have worked together on projects before, but the particular project that we’re focusing on today was new territory for us because prior to this shoot, my role had been that of the actor. This time Cynthia produced a short film that I wrote and directed. So today we’re talking about that process, from writing the script to pre production to shooting the film…all of it.  This episode was a fun one for me. I swear that during every step this project, if my brain was the puzzle, her brain was the missing piece. If you’re thinking about mounting a production, you’ll want to give this chat a close listen. How do two artists of different genres come together to create something that stays true to both of their visions? Today, Shelley and Robin talk about the ins and outs of the relationship between an author and the artist who is illustrating her book covers.  And there are fun tidbits about the how to’s of their respective  careers woven in to our talk about collaboration. In the next fifteen minutes, you’ll hear about the recording of her last album, No Vacancy and how the process of recording her new music, including her latest release Hometown, is different. Part of it is that she’s in a different headspace, part of it is that she’s in more control of how she’s recording, and today she’s sharing that process with us. She talks about what happened in college, and beyond, that shattered her confidence as a singer and as a performer, and how she’s getting that confidence back. And she explains how accepting her deep love for music, and eventually committing to her music and dropping the extraneous stuff, and yes…that included a job, is affecting her career in the most positive ways. In this episode, Drea talks about reclaiming ownership of her body, and who she is, through movement. And, she tells us how you can get in on this, too. We talk about the affect the assault has had on her art, and how music has helped her to fully process what happened. Which brings me to her latest single, Hometown, and the music she’s writing and recording currently. There’s definitely been a shift in her creative process, and we touch on it in this episode, and take a deep dive into in the next episode. In this episode Ela opens up and shares where that positivity came from and how living through the lowest low can really change a girl’s perspective. We also talk about how LA, the city and the lifestyle, creeped into her east coast brain to create the art she’s known for today. And now, only a year after beginning this particular subject matter we’ll be discussing, she’s achieved her goal of having a collection, a style that’s all her own, which is so identifiable. She gives us the inside scoop on exactly how she creates her pieces, which are a fine art and digital hybrid. Her band was part of the LA music scene for years, and now she is firmly rooted in Long Beach (just south of LA), which she says is a very supportive community for artists of all genres. As an artist who has been at it for years, Amy gives us insight into the incarnations of a musician and her band. How band mates have come and gone (not from her life, but from the band), and how she’s come to the conclusion that it’s best to play with professional musicians that she brings into her band, rather than people who she relates to every day. As of late, Shitting Glitter was on a little break, and in that time Amy’s been painting. She’s gone from someone who had never painted to someone who’s painted over 200 paintings in two years, and who’s work is showing in a gallery! And now, Amy’s back in the music scene, and her latest project, the Nasty Woman Concert Series, is happening this Saturday, July 8th! Amy opens up about the reason and the feelings behind the Nasty Woman Concert, and she talks about the importance, especially in the current political climate, of taking action. Her stories spring up around these deep truths, and I think that’s why, at least for me, once I started reading her work, I craved more. It’s like Yumi just gets me. :) She puts the human experience on paper. And in talking with her here on the show, and getting a glimpse into how she creates, I understand why her words and drawings evoke that sense of familiarity wrapped up in something that is just so magical. We talk books, comics, zines, traditional publishing, self publishing, tools of the trade, inspiration, and really, so much more! I’m super excited to share with you, my chat with Yumi Sakugawa. As artists, we can all agree that whatever we’re passionate about in life influences our work. It’s what our art is based on, really. Today's guest's story illustrates this point beautifully. I'm delighted to be chatting with singer, songwriter, Shelley Segal. Now, a lot of us are taught not to talk about religion or politics in polite company. Well, one of those topics comes up in today’s episode. And I’m going to say a word now, that I’ll admit, as someone who was raised in the Christian faith, has always made me a little uncomfortable. The word is Atheism. My guest today, has been called the “pin-up girl for the Atheist movement”. And I have to tell you, that her genuine caring for all people, just the love for humanity you can feel when you’re talking with her...well, I don't know what I expected exactly, or was taught to believe about Atheists. I will tell you that what I see in Shelley is the kind of person I hope I am.  Raised in a Jewish family, Shelley opens up about questioning certain beliefs, the journey to finding answers that resonated with her as a human being, and how these answers lead her to secularism. She shares how her search, and ultimately the community that she found, helped shape her music…well, a good chunk of it anyway. There’s so much more to her story, and so much more to her art. During our chat, we also discuss how her career took shape, and the different genres which have influenced her many sounds. And, she explains Patreon to me, and why she and her fans love the Patreon experience she is able to create for them. In opening up about her journey, Shelley illustrates a bit of her story through song. And oh, what songs she chose. You’ll just have to hear for yourself.
