Jack Hersch, author of Dangers of Automation in Airlines: Accidents Will Happen. Jack is not an airline pilot, but he is a student of automation and the science of human factors. Jack started as a writer with his book Death March Escape, sharing his father's story of escaping the concentration camps. He is a self-proclaimed airplane nut, so when the MAX crashes happened, he took it upon himself to investigate and report what really happened to those planes. It turns out it was an issue with automation. 2:25 - "On the wrong day with the wrong bit of automation going bad, could run into a problem." 3:21 - Conclusions Jack came to while writing his book - issues he found with automation in commercial airlines 9:40 - What is automation culture and how does company culture or world culture influence some of the accidents investigated in the book? 15:54 - "At the end of the day, the question isn't is automation bettor or is hand-flying better. It's about having situational awareness." 18:28 - How automation would apply to single-pilot or no-pilot operations in commercial or cargo aircraft 31:12 - "I wrote the book not to be a guidepost but to show what could happen in various scenarios." Kathryn interviews strategic advisor Jack J. Hersch, author of the book “Death March Escape: The Remarkable Story of a Man Who Twice Escaped the Nazi Holocaust”. Hersch grew up hearing the stories of how his father, Dave Hersch, twice escaped the brutal death marches forced on concentration camp prisoners by the Nazis at the end of World War II. More than a memoir, biography, or history, his new book is a page-turning account of what it takes to survive with your soul intact and to never surrender. Kathryn also interviews breast cancer survivor Laura Holmes Haddad, author of the book “This is Cancer: Everything You Need to Know, From the Waiting Room to the Bedroom.” At 37 years old, she was diagnosed with Stage IV inflammatory breast cancer. Through her treatment journey she realized that there was so much more to a cancer diagnosis than the medical stuff. Her book is a thoughtful and entertaining result for those who prefer their pathos with humor, reality and a touch of flair.
